GEHS April/May 2015 Volume XIV, Issue X DEPARTING DUO The end of every school year signals the start of many sad goodbyes, and this year is no exception. Along with the graduating seniors, Glen Este is losing two wonderful teachers to retirement. Mrs. Kathy Lach first started teaching Inside . . . After teaching 37 different classes at Glen Este (in both the English and Business fields) Mrs. Lach is looking forward to a retirement full of traveling and playing with her grandson, Daniel. Volunteering is also in her future plans. Even with wonderful hopes for the future, Glen Este still holds a special place in Mrs. Lach’s heart. Mrs. Lach (who says that her fondest memory of Glen Este is the immense support she received after her husband’s death) is certain that she will miss the daily interactions she has been used to having with students and other teachers. Also, the interaction outside of the classroom with the numerous clubs, organizations and groups she has been a part of. It is also certain that Glen Este will miss Mrs. Lach, one of the most influential teachers in the history of the school. Besides teaching 37 different classes Mrs. Lach has also coached several sports, including softball (for 29 years, 19 at GE), track (4 years), and volleyball (3 years). As many of you know Mrs. Lach has also been heavily involved in student council (for 23 years), class advisor for 16 years and has also been prom advisor six times, along with pep club, Café Poetica, and yearbook advisor just to name a few. An inspiration in her own right, Mrs. Lach was actually inspired to start teaching by her own high school teacher who cared greatly about helping her students succeed. To those pursuing a life of education she has this advice, “Be yourself and communicate with each student. Know your subject matter and be organized.” It has been by following this motto that Mrs. Lach has been able to be such an influential force in this school. Despite the many changes that Mrs. Lach has seen (the most irritable trend to her being the constant use of cellphones) and the many changes coming in the future, Mrs. Lach does not regret her many years spent here. When asked if given the opportunity, would she do it all over again, her answer was simple: “Yes, for sure!!!” -Danielle Watkins Mrs. Ginny Goble was originally a teacher at Madison High School in Mansfield, Ohio, teaching German and American History. She had thought about being a teacher since she was in 3rd grade, inspired by her mother and her high school German teacher. From 1987 to 1994, Mrs. Goble was a substitute teacher, but she was hired in 2002 as a full time teacher at GE, teaching German and Social Studies. Mrs. Goble has taught a plethora of courses in her career, like World History, American History, Economics, Government and AP US History. “I really like the students and interacting with them,” she adds about her favorite aspect of teaching. Mrs. Goble thinks that the biggest difference from when she first started teaching was the involvement of the state, such as what is taught and how, as well as, how classes are taught, Mrs. Goble adds that the students have also changed, “When I first started teaching, everyone turned in their assignments on time. It was rare when they were not done. Students were more respectful toward teachers and toward other students. It was uncommon to hear students use bad language in the hallways.” During her time at Glen Este, she acted as the co-advisor with Mr. Whitford for Green Team, Glen Este’s amazing recycling club. Looking back on it all, Mrs. Goble said that the weirdest incident that she has ever experienced was when a student came to school without shoes because they ‘forgot’ them and her fondest memory was seeing her three children graduate from Glen Este, as well as the annual Senior Walk for WECIPA when Glen Este had small schools. When she retires, Mrs. Goble wants to travel, read and have more time with her grandchildren. She also never wants to wake up at five am again! She will miss the great students she taught and her fellow teachers. Best of luck to you Mrs. Goble! -Cat Towell FESTIVITIES Page 2 The Torch Glen Este Prom 2015 “ShipWrecked” May 2, 2015 7:30-11:30 Newport on the Levee AFTER PROM 2015 PRIZES PRIZES PRIZES May 3, 2015 GAMES, JUMP HOUSE, TENNIS, Midnight—4:00 am ETC. Follow the tips below (ladies especially) for a safe and healthy experience to remember and cherish for a lifetime! Dyes can harm your skin, hair, and eyes. Test the product on a small, discreet part of hair before using ay new products on your hair. Never dye eyebrows or eyelashes, because it could cause blindness. If in doubt, let the professionals handle it. Protect your skin: Test cosmetics before use: Drink lots of water to get that natural glow! Tan the safe way with spray-ons or lotions. The ultra violet rays from tanning beds and laying out in the sun can harm your skin and increase your risk of getting skin cancer later on in life. Using certain makeup products or perfume may cause rash, irritation, wheezing, or sneezing. It is possible for allergies to occur! Be Watch your budget: cautious and follow all directions and warnStress is never healthy and can get in the ings on the packaging. Make sure to remove way of having the perfect prom. Therefore it your makeup immediately before falling is important to set a budget ahead of time to asleep. reduce headaches in the future. Follow directions, cautions, and warnings on hair products: Wear comfortable shoes: While high heels and stilettos may be the norm for prom, but make sure you ladies are comfortable with the height and fit of the shoes you choose. Suffering from blisters or twisting one’s ankle are not how one would want to remember their prom night. Never compromise comfort for style, or you will not be able to dance all night! FESTIVITIES Volume XIV, Issue X Page 3 PROM SAFETY TIPS Juniors and Seniors, with prom just around the corner (There’s only about a week left!), it is imperative that you understand the importance of safety. While having fun is the goal of the evening, being safe comes first. No one wants to be the girl who developed a rash because of using new makeup or the guy who got into a drunk driving accident. Here are some tips recommended by the Center for Disease Control (CDC) to help you have an enjoyable and memorable prom – for the right reasons! Just say no: Know before you go to after-parties: Do not, under any circumstances, feel pressure from your friends or the the media to drink, smoke, use drugs, or have sex on prom night. Drinking is responsible for over 4,500 deaths among young people each year and is associated with other problems like STDs and unintended pregnancy. Alcohol and drugs impair judgment and may result in being harmed or harming others. If you plan to go to an after party, make sure it is adult-supervised and isn’t located in a remote area. Go with a “buddy” to ensure each other’s safety. Once again, avoid using alcohol and drugs. Travel safely: Plan ahead: Teen drivers ages 16 to 19 are four times more likely than older drivers to get into a car Make sure friends and family know all the accident. Always wear a seatbelt, don’t drink plans for the evening and exchange phone and drive, and do not get in a car with a drivnumbers ahead of time so that no one is too er who is under the influence no matter how worried about where you might be or what well you know them or trust them. Also, make will be going on. Also, in case of emergency, having this information makes you and a trust- sure you or the person driving has a license! ed friend/adult more easily accessible. Use a Little Common Sense! You all have worked hard to get this far in your life and education. Don't blow it on a stupid selfish decision. I say selfish because an irresponsible act of drinking can kill. If you or any of your friends drink and drive and cause the death of someone, we all live with the results for a lifetime. We resent the guilty and will mourn the loss of a family member or friend. Please be smart and ‘Just Say No’. Buckle-Up, don't worry about wrinkling your dress or tux. ‘But Officer I'm going to my Prom’ is not an excuse. Additionally: Know the school rules. Don’t do anything to violate them and potentially ruin your prom night. Do not leave your possessions unattended at the venue. Always keep a little extra cash and a cell phone with you. Save your partying for the prom and after prom activities. Don't party in the car on the way there. Let the driver drive without distractions of loud music and ear piercing loud conversations. NO TEXTING OR PHONE CONVERSATION WHILE DRIVING!!!! If a police officer does stop you or shows up at your party, listen to what he has to say. Get away from the person or people that think they know more that the officer because trouble will not be far away. ‘Don't start any trouble and there won't be any trouble’. With proms and graduation celebrations upon us you need to Drive defensively. The Glen Este students may get this message but know that alcohol is not a ‘Right of Passage’ into adulthood but rather they are not the only ones on the road. There will be other selfish on obstacle on the road. You are good kids; don't let us down. I know drivers who might be drinking and driving, speeding, racing or chalyou all know the right thing to do. ‘Just Do It’. lenging the red lights and stops signs. You and you friends can be doing everything right and in a flash it can all change. Be looking for those selfish drivers. HAVE A FUN AND SAFE PROM EXPERIENCE. Don’t go down with the “ship!” SPRING HAPPENINGS Page 4 What is all this Flutter? Planting Roots on Arbor Day Do you want to flutter off into a magical, colorful land? Conducted by the Nazi Party, the Holocaust is something that would be tragically be looked upon by everyone around the world. Whether they were killed by means of gassing, starvation, disease, or mass shootings, more than eleven million people have died by the hands of Nazis. Although they are all remembered on different days around the world, it is needless to say that the Holocaust will be a tragedy to be mourned forever. - Minh Nguyen Mother’s Day Mother’s Day is a holiday honoring motherhood that is observed in different forms throughout the world. The American incarnation of Mother’s Day was created by Anna Jarvis in 1908 and became an official U.S. holiday in 1914. When J. Sterling Morton and his wife moved from Detroit to Nebraska in 1854, not only did they bring their accents but also their love for trees! Morton was a journalist and soon became the Editor of the Nebraska Newspaper. With this opportunity, he wrote about agricultural information and his enthusiasm for trees to an equally enthusiastic audience. The need for trees was big in Nebraska; especially since trees were needed as windbreaks to keep soil in place, for fuel, and for building materials. At a meeting in early January in 1872, Morton proposed a holiday dedicated to planting trees. The name “Arbor Day” was presented at the meeting of the State board of Agriculture. On April 10, 1872, a contest was held to see how many counties and individuals would plant the largest number of trees, winners were given prizes. it is estimated that more than one million trees were planted on that day. In 1870, other states passed legislation to observe Arbor Day and traditions in schools for planting trees began nationwide in 1882. Today the most common date for the holiday is the last Friday in April. But a number of state Arbor dates are set at different times to coincide with the best tree planting weather. Arbor day’s official holiday was proclaimed by the Nebraska Governor Robert W. Furnas on March 12, 1885. The day was selected based off of the holidays founding father’s birthday on April 10, 1874. Today the holiday is spread nationwide by the plating of trees to flowers. A statue of the founding father is standing high in his hometown of Nebraska, with a quote from him on the bottom. “Each generation takes the earth as trustees.” This Arbor day, go plant some roots Glen Este. -Kayla Overbee Bring Honor to Teachers The sixth of May marks National teachers day. While most of you might dislike your teachers, there are always some select few that make school life a little more easier. Whether they listen to your problems, make you laugh, give you less homework, or maybe even give you candy as a reward; there are some teachers that make the world go round. May the sixth is the perfect day to give back and show them that you appreciate them, So give them a hug, buy them a gift, smile at them, or just tell you that you're thankful for them (wow, it's Thanksgiving all over again, huh?) - Minh Nguyen -Asia Mineer SPRING HAPPENINGS Volume XIV, Issue X Cinco de Mayo In the United States, Cinco De Mayo, meaning the fifth of May, is a day to celebrate Mexican heritage and pride. In Mexico, however, it is celebrated to commemorate the Mexican Army’s unlikely victory over the French in The Battle of Puebla. however, this holiday is celebrated much differently. In Mexico, Page 5 RONEY’S IS BACK Roney’s aka Roy Rogers, is opening up in a new location in Milford. Roney’s, for those who are not aware, was a small fast food roast beef and burger joint in Mt Carmel. Roney’s closed on May 23, 2014 after a dispute with the leasing terms. The Loftspring’s, who owns the restaurant, had leased the property from the landlord for 45 years.. Chance Truemper, vice president of Cincinnati Contractors, Inc., said that the new Roney’s is set to open in around 4 or 5 months at 314 Chamber Dr. in Milford. The groundbreaking was on April 1 for a brand new building to be constructed for the restaurant. The Loftsprings promise a new building but are keeping the nostalgia of the décor and even the sign. For those of you who missed having Roney’s down the road, or have never even had it, your opportunity to pig out is right around the corner! IT IS DELICIOUS. - Adrian Avendano Sexual Assault Awareness The Opening of King’s Island The month of April has been deemed as Sexual Assault Awareness Month. The goal of “SAAM” is to raise awareness and help find ways to prevent the serious sexual assault crimes that happen worldwide. Women have always been extremely vocal about the seriousness of a sexual assault case, by the early 1980’s the interest in raising awareness increased dramatically in both men and women. From 2000 to 2001, the Resource Sharing Project (RSP) and the National Sexual Violence Resource Center (NSVR) polled state, territory, and tribal coalitions and decided that the color for Sexual Assault Awareness Month would be teal, and the preferred month to coordinate awareness activities would be April. SAAM does all that they can to help spread awareness, therefore, they are active on social media. You can find them on Facebook and Twitter. The official “Day of Action” took place on April 1st, and the day consisted of activities, using social media to reach more people about the cause, special events, and advocates raising awareness. One of the largest amusement and waterpark in the Midwest just opened! If you guessed King’s Island, then you were correct. Opening day for the park was Saturday, April 18th. Many new rides and improvements came to the park this year. There have been two new rides added to the part of the park named Planet Snoopy. The first of the new rides is Woodstock Gliders, which is a classic flying scooters ride from Larson’s international. The ride has eight planes that each hold two people that sits 28 feet above the ground and will fan out over a large area as the planes begin to rotate. The second new ride is Snoopy’s Space Buggie’s from Zamperla, and the ride has six rotating seats that bounce up and down while rotating in a circle. These new rides are not the only im- provements made to the park for the opening. The park has made improvements to stores and restaurants as well. Starbucks was relocated from its original location to the opposite side that is near the front gate, expanding it to 3,650 square feet. It will be able to seat up to 219 people. This makes it one of the largest Starbucks stores in the Midwest. A new yogurt store will also be added to the park. Yogurt Plus will be located where the Starbucks was before it was moved, and will offer 18 different flavors with an endless number of toppings to choose from. With these new rides and improvements made to the park during the winter, it adds to the excitement of opening day. Get out and enjoy King’s Island this summer! MIXED BAG Page 6 The Torch INFAMOUS SENIORITIS A Cynical View on 2016 Almost every senior will be faced with it at some point during their final year of high school; some are spared until the very end, and others are seduced by its lure as early as October! Senioritis is a common mania that affects most seniors at some point or another. Senioritis occurs when a student becomes so excited about the end of the year and graduation that they become more involved in social activities rather than school work, mainly due to the fact that they lack the motivation to continue. However there are several methods to help beat this disease; none are easy but all are accomplishable. The first thing is the simplest, go to class! No one wants to wake up at six in the morning to go to school for seven hours, but it is an easy step to take. Just wake up, go to class, and you are already one step closer to graduating! Furthermore, when you are at school, actually do your work. You are already at school and cannot leave, so you might as well learn the concepts being taught to you. The winds of change are swirling. President Obama's term has less than two years left. That means it is time for everyone who thinks they are qualified to be president to crawl out of the woodwork to begin to raise funds for the grueling one and half year campaign. Only in America. Other countries spend six weeks on campaigns for national leaders. Just like every major media source, The Torch is covering the election too. Just because you are graduating does not mean you cannot have fun, but it does limit when you should have fun. Sunday through Thursday nights should be only for school or work, the less socializing you do on these days the easier it is to focus on school work. These steps seem like all work and no play, but you have to remember what is important in life; is it attending a good college or is it hanging with friends on a Tuesday night instead of doing your math homework? Most students do not know this, but a college can revoke your admission decision after viewing a transcript of your senior year grades. This alone could deny many students from attending their college of choice. Just remember that the finish line is coming up and graduation is near, do not lose sight of what the last 12 years of school have been for. So when you come to the point where you feel like you just want to give up, follow these simple steps and these last few months will be a breeze. On the Democrat side there is a barren wasteland of emptiness. Hillary Clinton is the best candidate the left-wingers have. There is also this guy name Martin O'Malley no one cares about. There are two problems with having Clinton as their best option at the moment. There are several scandals surrounding her years as Secretary of State, including Benghazi and using a private email address. Also she is a dynasty candidate, family member was president before, and dynasty candidates typically are harder to elect. On the right side the Republican race remains wide open for anybody. Senators Ted Cruz (Texas) and Marco Rubio (Florida) have both officially declared. Those are the two notables to declare. Jeb Bush, another dynasty candidate had yet to declare. Chris Christie, the controversial governor of New Jersey, has not declared for the race either. The Republican race remains wide open for anyone. In 2016, educate yourself on the candidates and vote for who you want leading the world's superpower for four years... or more. - Zach Jeschke (A Biased Viewpoint) May the 4th (be with you) May the 4th is considered a holiday by many star wars fans. Why is this seemingly random day star wars day? Say “May the 4th Be With You” out loud and you’ll hear the pun that Star Wars fans have turned into a rally cry to proclaim their love of the saga. In 2011, the first organized celebration of Star Wars Day took place in Toronto, Ontario, Canada at the Toronto Underground Cinema. One of the earliest known records of “May the 4th” used in popular culture is in 1979 in May 4 by Alan Arnold: "Margaret Thatcher has won the election and become Britain’s first female prime minister May the Fourth Be With You, Maggie. Congratulations." So from everyone here at The Torch, May the 4th be with you! - Shawn Yingling ENTERTAINMENT Volume XIV, Issue X Concerts Playing in Cincinnati There are a lot of concerts playing in Cincinnati this summer, here is a list of some of the popular bands playing in some popular venues. TATTOOS IN THE MILITARY There exists a long history between the military and tattoos. All U.S. military branches have standards about where, what, how much, and how many their members can have before enlisting and during their service. These regulations make sure that everyone maintains appearance standards for their given branch, much in the same way each branch maintains standards about uniforms and uniform appearance. As is often the case, each branch has its own definition of what amount of ink is acceptable, as well as the content and location. During MEPS(Military Entrance and Processing Station) recruits will be given a full physical to make sure that he or she is fit for duty. During this time, you will be looked over by a military doctor, who will assess if your “artwork” violates any of the military tattoo policy. Army Tattoo Policy: According to somewhat recent changes in Army regulations, tattoo policy is slightly more relaxed than the Navy’s policy although both were previously identical. Tattoos in the Army are now considered okay on the hands and back of the neck as long as they are not “extremist, indecent, sexist, or racist.” Here is what is against the army’s tattoo policy: -Anything anywhere that’s considered extremist, indecent, sexist or racist. -Tattoos associated with groups known to engage in extreme behavior or propagate any kind of racial, gender, ethnic, etc. intolerance or hatred. (KKK, Black Panthers, Nazi tattoos, etc.) -Sexist tattoos related to a philosophical stance that degrades others based on gender. If you’re enlisting in the army and happen to have tattoos that are in violation of the army’s tattoo policies, like the Navy, you can request a waiver from your recruiter. Chances are pretty good that you can get approved. And while a commander can’t order a soldier to have a tattoo removed, chances are good that your chain of command would recommend it. -Michael Black The Torch Apollo 17 Apollo 17 Crew: Eugene A. Cernan, commander Ronald E. Evans, command module pilot Harrison H. Schmitt, lunar module pilot Apollo 17 was the last Apollo mission to land men on the Moon. It carried the only trained geologist to walk on the lunar surface; lunar module pilot Harrison Schmitt. Compared to previous Apollo missions, Apollo 17 astronauts traversed the greatest distance using the Lunar Roving Vehicle and returned the greatest amount of rock and soil samples. Eugene Cernan, commander of Apollo 17, still holds the distinction of being the last man to walk on the Moon, as no humans have visited the Moon since December 14, 1972.The successful Apollo 17 manned lunar landing mission was the last in a series of three J-type missions planned for the Apollo Program. The J-type missions have been characterized by extended hardware capability, by a scientific payload larger than the previous G- and H-series missions and by use of a battery powered lunar roving vehicle (LRV). As a result of these additions, the Apollo 17 mission had a duration of 12.6 days, and a time on the lunar surface of 75 hr with a total surface traverse distance of approximately 35 km. The Saturn V carrying Apollo 17 was launched from NASA John F. Kennedy Space Center at 05:33:00 UT on December 7, 1972 (11:33:00 p.m. CST on December 6, 1972). -Thu A. Nguyen Average Joe or no? How many of you have to have a cup of coffee in the morning to start your day and wake you up? Well, coffee is good for more than just keeping you awake. There are many health benefits that come from drinking coffee. Studies show that the caffeine in coffee helps to provide a short term memory boost. Drinking coffee also helps to protect against cognitive decline. One theory of why this may be is that drinking coffee decreases the risk of type 2 diabetes, which is a risk factor for developing dementia. It also helps to support heart health by protecting against arterial damage caused by inflammation. Not only does it protect your heart but it also helps with depression. The caffeine in coffee activates neurotransmitters that control mood, including dopamine and serotonin. Coffee is also good for decreasing the risk of gout. The properties of the antioxidants in coffee decreases the amount of insulin, which lowers uric acid levels, and this leads to the decreased risk of gout because gout is caused by high concentrations of uric acid. All of these benefits to coffee may have you thinking more about your cup that you drink every morning. For all of you coffee drinkers out there, keep it up, think about all of the health benefits it provides. - Ashley Lorenzen Volume XIV, Issue X VIEWPOINTS You Might Have A Problem This Month In History: April and May (Ten signs you may have a problem with addiction to your phone) 1. Press Hang it Up In 2009, there were roughly 5,846 teen drivers and there were roughly 33 million licensed drivers aged 65 and older on the roads of the United States of America. With 153.3 billion text messages sent in 2013, there were 3,154 people killed in motor vehicle crashes due to the result of distracted driving. Why is that a big deal? Because it is 2015 and the statistics are growing. Yes, there have been laws put in place about the problem of distracted driving but, how can a cop possibly catch someone texting if they themselves are texting? There should be more laws put in place for distracted drivers. Maybe with stricter laws, the statistics would go down and less people would be killed. Drivers of ages 16-20 are the biggest culprits of this crime and should be the biggest target for laws and regulations on the road. Just a warning to everyone reading this - it only takes five seconds to take your eyes from the road to cause a crash. Do not become part of these statistics, be the change that the roads really need. - Shawnee Kuper VIEWPOINTS Page 10 Protectors or Persecutors? United States. Many people in the world believe that Marijuana is a stepping stone drug. This means that Marijuana “opens” many doors to try and experiment with more drugs. People argue that the high you get from Marijuana is addicting and leads users to wanting more of a high after so many uses. This leads to the user to start abusing more dangerous drugs to get a better and longer lasting high. There is no actual evidence proving this theory to be true, due to the fact that Marijuana is illegal and scientists cannot legally test this theory. That being said, the evidence does not make a difference to some people, they still believe that Marijuana leads to bigger and more dangerous drugs. What do you think? Dress to “Oppress” can be less distracted as they are educated. Does this not seem a bit sexist? A sixth grade girl was sent home because her shorts were above her knees, her mother came back and said “My daughter was punished for showing too much of her (gasp!) legs. Her school is normalizing the notion that girls’ bodies are distractions. That girls bear responsibility for boys’ reactions to their bodies. Boys have thoughts that are inherently impure and will lead to misconduct. The school’s chosen mode of punishment is disrupting girls’ educational experiences and quite possibly hindering their legal right to an education. The message and actions perpetrated by gender-biased implementation of school dress codes—the blaming and shaming of our girls—has got to stop.” Should public schools enforce a dress code on their students? This question has been all over media recently. This rule seems to mostly target females. Some people think that girls wearing leggings, yoga pants, and shorts are “distracting” to boys within the school. In order to no longer have a “distraction,” girls normally cannot wear off the shoulder tops, crop tops, leggings or shorts above the bottom of the girls’ fingertips. This is beyond absurd. A shoulder should not be a distraction in school. If it is, then the problem is not the girl wearing it, it is the person being distracted. The “fingertip rule” is very unfair, because some girls have longer arms and shorter legs than others. According to ECC Commissioner Ray Spicher, on April 15, the Eastern Cincinnati Board of Control voted unanimously to accept the new West Clermont High School as a member of the ECC, upon completion of the new school. "This will allow for the league to achieve new heights in offering a competitive setting for the student athletes and communities served. We are very excited to move into this new relationship with West Clermont High School," Spicher said. Other ECC member schools include Anderson, Kings, Loveland, Milford, Turpin, Walnut Hills, and Withrow. Once Amelia and Glen Este merge, West Clermont will take Glen Este’s spot in the conference. The West Clermont School District is in the design phase of the construction of the new West Clermont High School building, located at the corner of Bach-Buxton Road and Clough Pike. WCLSD Superintendent Keith Kline is pleased that the new WCHS will be a member of the ECC. "We have a lot of talent at both Amelia and Glen Este high schools and are excited about staying connected to the ECC and its member schools,” Kline commented. “The ECC will provide our athletes rigorous competition and gives West Clermont a top quality athletic home well into the future.” The new school will serve all West Clermont students in grades 9 - 12. After all, the two schools are in the same school district, but are they a real competitive rival? It is true that in a few sports they are able to beat Glen Este, boys basketball and soccer, but in the rest of the sports they are not competitive. Once the schools merge who will the new rival be? The best rivals in sports are those within close geographically and have a history between the two schools. Duke and North Carolina, Ohio State and Michigan, Alabama and Auburn, all very good rivalries. Anderson High School could fill the void of the school’s rival when the schools combine. They basically are already the Trojan’s rival. The schools are located a short fifteen minute drive from each other. There is also a history of trash talking between the two schools. They are a yearly opponent in every sport because they are in our conference. As far as competitiveness of Anderson’s teams, it would depend on which sport and certain teams at Glen Este may say they have a different rival than Anderson. The Redskins are a good de facto rival because of the close proximity and the overall bad blood between the student body. Let us cheer on the Trojans, no matter who they are playing! - Zach Jeschke Tennis A League of Their Own Hometown Sluggers The Tennis team is having a lot of fun out on the courts with alot of first year players. The only returning player this year is Garrett Karns and he is a singles player, but unfortunately he was injured and is out for the remainder of the season. Standout players so far are Zach Jones who is first singles for Glen Este who lost in a close match while losing to Anderson in a tiebreaker, and Mrigank Sharma who is our second singles player. We have a lot of new players but they are learning a lot and having fun and thats all that matters. - Zach Jones The Glen Este Lady Trojans softball team is off to a good start this season. With star player Brooke Parker leading the way, some fans who have went to the games have even called it the Brooke Parker Show when watching the Lady Trojans play. Parker is 4-1 with 32 innings pitched with 47 strikeouts and an ERA of 0.88. The Lady Trojans are currently 4-1 overall and undefeated in conference play with an outstanding record of 1-0. They are 8-2 losing only to Anderson, and Moeller who is a powerhouse for baseball. The Trojans are rolling along and plan to keep it going. Every witch and wizard knows what the greatest sport in the world is, but for you muggles out there that may not know it, Quidditch is the best sport ever invented. Not only is it based on the magical world of Harry Potter, but it is actually a really fun sport to watch. What other sport combines aspects of soccer, rugby, and dodgeball, has teams that must consist of both males and females and requires that the players run around a field with a broom between their legs? Over 300 teams around the world play Quidditch and just recently 80 of those teams came to Rock Hill, South Carolina to participate in Quidditch World Cup 8. The Lone Star Quidditch Team gained a quick lead over the Longhorns with the help of their chaser, Christopher Scholz, but The Longhorns’ chaser, Marty Bermudez, and keeper, Augustine Monroe, were quick to retaliate. Think World War Two. In order to defend common interests, the Soviet Union and the United States worked together to topple Hitler’s regime. Subsequently, the difference of philosophies caused the Cold War, a 45 year long indirect conflict. I believe the same will happen if Glen Este and Amelia combine. After the brief period of elation, the built up tension of the rivalry will take over. Eventually, a “turf-war” may erupt. Lack of seniority will put newer teachers out of a job, as the more experienced teachers of both schools take the positions. Although, the district may save money, many nostalgic experiences will be lost. Finally, students will no longer be able to say that they are Glen Este Trojans. We are all aware of the new school coming in 2017, combining Glen Este and Amelia, but there are still some questions about West Clermont High School that are still in the air. One of those is, what is going to be the school’s colors and mascot? The branding committee is in charge of deciding this factor. The committee is comprised of staff and some students of both Amelia and Glen Este. The final decision will be in May during a board meeting. The branding committee will narrow down all possible color and mascot choices to four, which then they will select from. They have gathered multiple submissions from students, teachers, families, etc, and all will be taken into consideration. West Clermont High School also has a few other balls to toss in the air. Along with the obvious new mascot and colors, the school will also need a new fight song as well as a new alma mater. It will be a new era for West Clermont, one that was much needed, for both Amelia and Glen Este. -Aaron Troknya -Adrian Avendano Page 14 LOOKING AHEAD The Torch College Corner-Xavier University Are you looking for a good private university? I say that I see little dots of light dancing happily. I see beauty from the vast outer space, I see the light in your eyes as a smile creeps onto your face. The stars have many stories, that only adventurous eyes can read. They show dreams that have grown from just a small seed. I am one of the lucky ones who admires their soothing voices. And looks to them for an escape from all the background noise. Although to most people the stars are merely light, I see them as something that is a lot more bright. I am not like many, who are spirited dream-catchers, There is one thing that matters to me most, I am a stargazer. If you touch me unexpectedly, don’t be alarmed because to me your hands are a microwave and I’m a kernel of popcorn, I will pop. Not pop you in the jaw, I’ll jump and yelp and try so hard not to be stern with you on boat rides I stare at the ground the whole time because what if looking into the sea makes the boat more sinkable, In movie theaters, I sit in the very back because what if someone came in with a gun? That’d be no fun, and when it’s sunny I look at the sky because when the sun is out I think it wants to be seen but when I look at the trees the sun shining through the leaves it’s too much so the sky it is, I stare down into a cosmic void to avoid system overload I can’t take in a lot all at once it becomes too much. If someone’s confessing to me I stare at everyone but them because feelings are too much, too raw, and I can barely stand raw vegetables, let alone your sad eyes and kind words. So to the table my eyes are. There’s too much good in the world my rough skin can’t take, my eyes have seen so much ugly the pretty is hard to handle I don’t soak my face with the sun I just can’t face it but when people give me space and understand me on certain days, when I wake up earlier to see the sunrise I realize I was born onto this earth like everyone else all the beauty around me is to take in, to cherish. I deserve space and I deserve to see beauty and I deserve kindness despite the ghosts in my eyes I deserve to be heard, I deserve to do what I please and if I don’t sound humble I’m sorry but I’d rather be seen as vain than learn to hate myself again. I think we’re all messed up, part don’t touch me part don’t leave part “please like me,” part can’t breathe but we are all a part of a bigger painting and it pains me when people say they don’t deserve the best because we were all a part of the world before the world existed we all have stardust in our bones and we all have our universe to be in all adding up to this one.
