Vegas is for gamblers, and at this year’s Monster Energy Cup the smart money was on proven winners.
Ken Roczen took home the big prize with 1-4-1 moto finishes against the best of the best. And a pair of
Team Dunlop Elite riders swept the support races; Casey Cochran won the KTM Junior Supercross Challenge, while Lance Kobusch came from behind to win both Supermini motos. In the Amateur All-Stars
event featuring the nation’s top 250cc A and B riders, Team Dunlop Elite alumnus Austin Forkner dominated both motos to keep his six-race Monster Energy Cup win streak alive.

With one round remaining in the 10-round 2015 AMA National enduro Championship series,
Kailub russell of the Dunlop-sponsored FMF KTM Factory off-road Team cemented his first
enduro title in heroic fashion. equally important, he set a pair of history-making marks in the
process: His father Jeff won the AMA National enduro Championship in 1991, and Kailub’s
winning efforts make them the first father/son duo to achieve this accomplishment. in
addition, he also racked up the 2015 Grand National Cross Country championship in
dominating fashion, thereby becoming the first rider in history to nab both off-road titles in
the same year.
overall, russell had a fantastic year of enduro racing. Despite a slight hiccup he made at the
rattlesnake enduro in pennsylvania in late July—he “only” finished sixth—russell either won
every other overall or finished in second place. But just as he was looking to wrap things up,
he injured a knee in september while representing the u.s.A. at the international six Day
enduro in slovakia. And that injury raised a big question mark for the september 27 Black
Coal National enduro. True to form, russell arrived in indiana determined to do his best. He
dug deep, rode hard and finished third overall to capture the crown.
Meanwhile, russell’s teammate russell Bobbitt still holds down second place in the enduro
series, giving the FMF KTM Factory off-road Team a clear shot at going 1-2 on the season.

the majority of the bike was fabricated in the rsD shop. The

and it hung the big motor in a custom chromoly frame

what
roland
says
So what was the best aspect of this build
for you?
My favorite part was riding the bike after we
finished it at the sturgis half-mile. i’ve spent
some time on the stock Chieftain and it will
eat the miles in comfort but doesn’t tend to
do a lot for your adrenal glands. This bike
does. You can ride it pretty hard on the dirt,
and the light weight really lets the motor
breathe. You can get yourself in trouble on
it, which i like.
Was there anything particularly
challenging about the build?
The timeline was tough. We had just
finished the Victory project 156 and rebuilt it
after a crash and had to jump right into this
one for sturgis. But it was one of those
bikes that aesthetically we got right from
the beginning, so there wasn’t a lot of fixing
or trying to make things work. When you
build something from the ground up with a
motor in the middle of a table, the world is
your oyster. But it can also get you in a lot
of trouble if the bike doesn’t sit right when
you set it on the ground. This bike sat right.
There’s also just something about those
Dunlop flat track tires that make any bike
look bad ass.
What was most satisfying about
this project?
We fired the bike up at the shop and i took
it for a spin for the first time. There was just
a splash of gas in it, so i ran out at the park
by the shop. i parked the bike under a tree
in the shade and had a moment to enjoy the
effort and the bike by myself. it was a good
moment.

on his 2015 season
As the defending champion from 2014, did you start the 2015 season more confident, or
else more nervous due to the increased pressure?
i started the 2015 motocross season feeling stronger than the previous year so i knew i was
ready to defend my title! running the big number 1 plate didn’t bring any added pressure. Is starting the Outdoor season so soon after Supercross finishes a good thing because
you’re so well practiced, or harder because you may be a bit used up as well as having to
change your riding style?
i personally like starting the motocross championship right away after supercross. Not many
riders are ready to face the challenge of the brutal hot summer months and continue to grind
through the summer! The Outdoor season came down to the last race and moto. How did you get yourself
focused going into that weekend?
Going into the last round i did my normal routine to get in the zone and told myself, “You’ve
trained your whole life for this moment. You’ve been preparing for it to come down to the last
moto of the year!”

my dUnloP tires are so
Good that no matter what
race it is, sUPercross or
motocross, i rUn the
same exact tire in every
condition no matter what! In Moto 1, when you saw Musquin had DNF’d, did you try
to shove that into the back of your mind and carry on
racing, or was it a huge relief that let you enjoy the
moto more?
When i got signaled that the 25 machine was out, i was blown
away and bummed out because we were right next to each
other setup to battle for the rest of the moto. With the title still on the line, what did you tell yourself on
the gate before the final moto of the year?
Before the last moto when i was on the gate, i told myself,
“let’s finish the season off strong and get a holeshot and ride
your own race.” unfortunately i ended up going down a couple
turns into the race. i think my heart fell out of my chest! What does being a two-time AMA Motocross champion
mean to you?
it means everything to me to be able to be a two-time outdoor
champ now. it’s a long series that you can’t luck into winning.
it takes a lot of hard work and sacrifice to win an outdoor
national championship! How differently do you like your bike setup between
Supercross and Outdoor?
My set up for supercross and motocross isn’t too different.
The engine is a little faster for outdoors than supercross, and
obviously the suspension for supercross is much stiffer. What do you like most in a motocross tire and how do the
Dunlops provide it?
My Dunlop tires are so good that no matter what race it is,
supercross or motocross, i run the same exact tire in every
condition no matter what! Dunlop has me so dialed in
nowadays that i only run the Geomax MX32 patterns in the
front and rear everywhere i go! 72

Winning a championship is a team effort, and the team behind the rider spends an extraordinary amount of
time preparing racing machinery for battle. it’s all about giving the rider the best possible chance of
winning. The motorcycles that are ridden to titles are often as extraordinary as the riders themselves, so
we thought we’d have a closer look at some of the machines that will wear number-one plates in 2016.

the moment
our two favorite shooters, simon Cudby and Brian J. Nelson, see
things through the lens that normal people don’t see. That’s what
makes them extraordinary photographers. Motorcycles traveling the
length of a football field in mere seconds or soaring 150 feet off a jump
are extremely difficult to capture. But just stopping the action isn’t
enough—it’s all about the moment, that fraction of a second when
something special happens to make a photograph memorable. Here
are some of Cudby’s and Nelson’s shots from the 2015 racing season.
