52 - Arty Farty
As we finished with the Usines Brossette in 2013, we are now turning
a new page. Once again, the 12th Nuits Sonores festival will reinvent
our ideas of what a festival should be. Here at Arty Farty, we are loyal
to our convictions and have a great passion for beautiful industrial
sites. This includes the magnificent Halle Girard, connected to the
former Marché Gare which was used for the festival in 2009, 2010 and
2011. Nuits Sonores can now set up in its location of preference – La
Confluence.
In 2014, Nuits Sonores will take over the Marché de Gros, but in a
totally new and unexpected way. For a loyal crowd, this means some
sort of return to the future – rediscovering a few familiar elements
from the past within the transformation of the location. Newcomers
can explore the industrial space of La Confluence where the day program will take place (NS Days and Mini Sonore at La Sucrière) as well
as the Inauguration in an expected location, professional events at
Le Sucre, the European Lab forum at l’Hôtel de Région (see pages 31
and 41), a Carte Blanche program run alongside the Apéros Sonores
(Glasgow, this year’s guest city). It is our most ambitious urban and
scenographic journey yet.
The Confluence 2014 project has been built around this new spectacular night venue (see pages 2 to 7). It is a new kind of territorialisation for Nuits Sonores which is focused on the incredible area at the
southern point of the Presqu’île and open to all areas of Lyon through
the more participative programs – especially Extra! and Night 2 (The
Circuit).
Arty Farty is approaching their 12th festival with the same convictions.
The festival’s philosophy has not changed – to develop an urban
event that is open to a range of contemporary disciplines including
music, graphic design, scenography, visual creation and digital
culture.
The key to this year’s festival is constant renewal and redefining the
boundaries of a project that evolves with time.
Although other festivals may want to provide big headliners and
uncover artistic talent at any cost, Nuits Sonores continues to rethink
its propositions while maintaining a good relationship with the public
through urban, contemporary and global artistic creation.
This is the story of a district (Confluence), the story of a city (Glasgow),
the story of an established curator and interdisciplinary crossovers
(e.g. Images Sonores). The Nuits Sonores project is a stage for an era
where everything is accelerated, a snapshot of rich artistic creation
and innovation.
We strongly maintain our artistic standards and our desire to provide
a unique urban experience to be shared among the public from Lyon
and all over Europe.

confluence 2014
TWO EVENTS, ONE AREA
From Tuesday 27 May to Sunday 1 June 2014, the 12th Nuits Sonores festival and the 4th
European Lab forum will take place in the Confluence district. For Arty Farty, this is a
new opportunity to innovate and experiment in the territorialisation of a festival.
Since 2002, we have been thinking of the concept of an urban festival, working with the
notions of mobility, livelihood and movement in the city. We set up the first Nuits Sonores
festival (2003) as a model for architecture and event conception. Twelve years later, our
will to constantly reinvent the building blocks of Nuits Sonores has led us to develop a
unique cultural experience in a transient artistic and urban space – La Confluence.
This model for urban renewal is a crossover of industrial heritage and innovative
constructions, an eco-district integrating all sorts of urban and architectural innovations
with environmentally friendly modes of transport. This new area of Lyon, located in the
extension of the heart of the city at the southern point of the Presqu’île, is the ideal spot
for the project.
One of the main goals of the project is to bring the area to life for festivalgoers, locals
and French and international visitors who haven’t yet had the chance to discover it.
Over five days and five nights, the Confluence district will host the five main venues of
Nuits Sonores and the European Lab – La Sucrière (the main day venue), le Sucre (for
all PR and professional events), L’Ancien Marché de Gros extended into the magnificent
Halle Girard (venue for the three main Nights), l’Hotel de Region (welcome centre
for the Lab); La Maison de la Confluence and La Halle aux Fleurs (the venue for the
Inauguration and the new Carte Blanche/Apéros program).
La Confluence will also be the place for connecting crowds, artists, the media and
professionals in cultural innovation from all over the world. It will be simple to move
between venues quickly and efficiently, making the most of the environmentally friendly
modes of transport available – tram, metro, bus, public bicycles (vélo’v) which are all
connected to the Perrache station - a gateway to La Confluence, and of course river
shuttles and shared cars.
Arty Farty is very familiar with this district, being the first cultural structure to open up
the big industrial spaces and heritage gems of La Confluence. The festival and Lab
teams will work on detailed integration, urban scenography, quality event production
(accessibility & durability), links between venues and also local mediation and
cooperation with residents, businesses and local cultural organisations.

MAIN VENUES – CONFLUENCE 2014
New Order at La Sucrière/ Special concert at Nuits Sonores 2012
Hôtel de Région
The Hôtel de Région, a symbolic building in the new
Confluence district, is the starting point where Nuits
Sonores and the European Lab 2014 will unfold.
It is one of the main venues for the European
Lab (hosting three days of the forum), it is also
the backbone of the two events - the public and
professional reception, ticket office, information
point and also a production area for the duration
of the festival.
La Sucrière
Welcome back to La Sucrière! This historical site
and birthplace of the festival will host NS Days and
the kids’ program, Mini Sonore. With three stages,
including an outdoor stage, La Sucrière is not to be
missed this year.
ancien marché de gros
Nobody could forget the old market that Nuits
Sonores used from 2009 to 2011 which became a
talking point of the festival. This year, Nuits Sonores
will return to this heritage industrial site with newly
designed spaces, including three stages, one of
which has never been seen before.
Maison de la Confluence
La Halle, opposite the Maison de la Confluence,
unveiled last year, is the perfect backdrop for
Apéros Glasgow. It is a three-day street party
with a free day program dedicated to this British
metropolis (Glasgow Carte Blanche program).
HALLE AUX FLEURS
Originally a flower market, the Halle aux Fleurs
is one of the architectural jewels of the former
Marché Gare. This space will host part of the
Inauguration and the Glasgow Carte Blanche
program.
Parc des Berges
Nuits Sonores returns to one of its first loves, the
Parc des Berges, with Sunday Park. We will bring a
close to the week of revelry in a relaxed and family
friendly environment.
Hôtel de Ville
In the heart of Lyon, the Hôtel de Ville will open the
European Lab and then host the first day dedicated
to European cultural policy.
le sucre
Le Sucre is magnificently perched on the roof of
La Sucrière, and quickly became a real cultural
hotspot in Lyon. It is a club, event hall, and cultural
space all in one, and will play host to all the
professional and PR events at Nuits Sonores and the
European Lab in 2014.

A TRIBUTE TO glasgow
Having paid tribute to Manchester in 2005 and London in 2009, Nuits
Sonores is putting the rich British scene back in the limelight for the
third time by inviting Glasgow to the festival.
For over 30 years, Glasgow has placed arts and culture at the heart
of its urban, economic and social regeneration policies. The arts and
cultural scene has become a vector for the municipality to stimulate
economic activity and proceed to reconvert industrial sites in cultural,
commercial and residential areas. This orientation functions within a
larger framework where the aim is to reconstruct a clear and positive
image of the city and bring back its appeal for investors and new
populations. The arts and culture have led to a rebirth of the postindustrial city to turn it into a cultural capital in the eyes of the world.
A number of links with the City of Lyon and more so with the territorial
project that we are presenting for Nuits Sonores and the European
Lab 2014 at La Confluence have made Glasgow our top pick for the
12th festival.
Furthermore, the city of Glasgow held the title of European Capital
of Culture in 1990 and it was named the UK City of Architecture in 1999. Due to its strong musical history
and organisation of national and international festivals, Glasgow was named the UNESCO City of Music
in 2008, and was considered the secret music capital of Europe by Time Magazine. The Carte Blanche
program adapts each year to the social, cultural and artistic identity of the guest city. This will be a tribute
to Glasgow’s legendary music scene, visual culture, cinema, scenography and architecture.
As part of the Confluence 2014 project, La Maison de la Confluence will be the epicentre of the editorial
philosophy of the project. Therefore, La Maison de la Confluence, along with the Halle aux Fleurs, will play
host to:
- Glasgow Apéros
- An exhibition and projection space for the Carte Blanche program
- A friendly, artistic space to meet and talk
The entire Carte Blanche program is free.

You can also find our Glaswegian artists at:

IN COLLABORATION WITH heart of glass, heart of gold FESTIVAL
Heart of Glass, Heart of Gold naturally turned to Optimo DJs who
the festival shares a musical culture and open mind with. But if
the blood of Heart Of Glass, Heart Of Gold runs in Ardèche, their
heart beats in Lyon and invites local artists to discover Glaswegian culture.
12:30 / 4:00pm : DEE OFLASH (Lyon – France) DJ set

Commando Koko’s first loves which are now heading
towards deformation, degradation and degeneration of

a mix of dark groove, turntablism and tape stabbing.
7:00pm / 9:00pm: OPTIMO (ESPACIO) (Optimo Music /
Glasgow – UK) DJ set
Jonnie Wilkes and Keith McIvor – a.k.a. JG Wilkes and
JD Twitch – met in November 1997 at the Sub Club
in Glasgow. Since then, they have founded the label
Optimo Music and created Optimo, a duo born from
their will to invent new ways of DJing, using samples,
laptops and effects boxes, mixing a range of musical
styles. Playing with anything from rock to electro and
reggae to cold wave, Optimo creates a unique space for
freedom without musical borders.
5:30pm / 6:30pm : GOLDEN TEACHER (Optimo Music /
Glasgow – UK) Live
Golden Teacher was born out of a studio collaboration
between the noise punk trio Ultimate Thrush and the
house duo Silk Cut who are both from Glasgow. The

Their name comes from a Henry Miller trilogy that

Un peu de rock’n’roll, un peu de rockabilly, une
musique dark et un sourire malicieux, on pourrait
décrire la musique de l’ex-leader de Uncle John

GLASGOW CARTE BLANCHE PROGRAM
cinE glasgow - art & scEnographie
We can all agree that Nuits Sonores is above all a
music festival, but we have always held a special
place for culture and art in general. After a number
of trips to Glasgow, Arty Farty has discovered the
city’s artists’ ability to think outside the square and
break away from tradition, seeing creation as the
greater means for expression.
CINÉ GLASGOW
Nuits Sonores has decided to set up a cinema
entirely dedicated to Glasgow this year to reflect
the importance of the city’s cultural life. A special
program of documentaries, archives, short films,
feature films, live recordings, clips and other artistic
video pieces dedicated to the Scottish capital will
be put on at the Halle aux Fleurs, just a stone’s
throw away from the Glasgow Apéros. Glasgow
Cinema will be a breath of fresh air for curious
festivalgoers, a totally immersive experience thanks
to the wireless headphone system that will be
available at the entrance.
Archived pictures of Glasgow before and after the
war remind us of the history of this dock city and
the fact that its origins are still deeply lodged and
respected by younger generations, the world of
Charles Rennie Mackintosh, the thumping bass of
the legendary SubClub, the development of labels
such as Rock Action, Soma and archives of live
performances are on all on the menu at Cinema
Glasgow.
In partnership with Detour Scotland, a TV show that
strives to promote the city’s underground scene.
The idea is to screen one hour per day of live
performances by carefully-selected Scottish bands
filmed in unique, symbolic locations in Glasgow.
This is a special Nuits Sonores 2014 event.
ART AND SCÉNOGRAPHY
Nuits Sonores has always aimed to create an
experience for its crowds that goes beyond simply
putting on a show. Through our programs and
scenographic work, Nuits Sonores makes way for
Glasgow and its bubbling creativity.
Thanks to the influence of visionaries like
Mackintosh the capital of bagpipes and kilts
has become one of Europe’s most creative cities
despite its modest size. Well ahead of its time,
The Glasgow School of Art has long understood
how to provide innovative programs. For this
reason, Nuits Sonores chose to collaborate with
the school for the scenography of the Glasgow
Carte Blanche program. In partnership with The
Art School, a concert hall and exhibition space run
by the Glasgow School of Art’s dynamic student
federation, a call for projects was launched
for students to design the Carte Blanche by
appropriating urban furniture in their own way.

ROOM 1930
Nuits Sonores has been running NS Days since 2011 to cater for diverse
audiences and giving yet another exciting dimension to the festival’s program.
There are few artists who manage to
become stars in Ibiza while remaining
steadfast to their underground roots.
The Frenchies Apollonia hypnotise
Balearic nights, while giving Fabric
one of their best compilations of 2013.
There is no doubt that Nuits Sonores
will treat them as prophets in their
country. Nina Kraviz, the past master
of acid house, is perhaps the true
superstar that underground house
scene has been waiting for to make
over today’s stiffening techno scene.
6:00pm / 9:00pm : Nina Kraviz (Rekids / Moscow Russia ) DJ set
She has come a long way since playing at Nuits
Sonores in2011. Today, Nina Kraviz is in the Hall
of Fame of today’s house producers. The recipe
is simple and effective: a delicate balance of
house, techno and acid house, picking from her
productions and influences or from new electronic
trends. Her sexy sets that get you dancing make her
a controversial figure but also…an icon!
3:00pm / 6:00pm : Apollonia ( Apollonia / Paris France ) DJ set
Shonky, Dan Ghenacia and Dyed Soundroom
have been cultivating techno and house culture
for over 10 years. Since 2012, as Apollonia , they
specialise in back to back to even be seen as a
unique band made of one entity rather than three
separate bodies. Their sound is a mix of black
music and «white soul». Apollonia also created
their eponymous label.

out blues, new wave, rock and electro.
Dum Dum Girls
2:30pm / 3:30pm BRUNO DANGERHOUSE
(Dangerhouse / Lyon - France)
Bruno Dangerhouse is not a DJ, he doesn’t
“mix” and he doesn’t play “sets”- he plays hazy,
subjective records extracted randomly from his
stock, all while he is concentrating on something
else. He cannot dance, but he will sweep and tidy
the room after his show. He has been in full action
since 1989, and his store Dangerhouse is one of
Lyon’s oldest independent records stores, with a
collection of over 10,000 vinyls and CDs.
3:30pm / 4:15pm : BOB LOG III (Fat Possum /
Tuscon - USA) Live
A one man band with his rhythm machine and
guitar, Bob Log III plays his blues-punk songs that’ll
have you hooked. But Bob Log III is not only great
fun, he is also a talented composer who has rebuilt
blues music in totally original way. In his own words,
“my shit is perfect”.
7:00pm / 9:00pm : DANIEL AVERY (Phantasy /
London - UK) DJ set
When Erol Alkan heard Smint he immediately
decided to sign Stopmakingme aka Daniel Avery.
Influenced by innovative DJs such as Ivan Smagghe
and Optimo, Daniel Avery has developed an
original style mixing house and techno with cosmic
purrs, post- punk undertones and new wave hues
without losing the energy of the dancefloor.
19h00 / 21h00 : DANIEL AVERY (Phantasy /

Lorsqu’Erol Alkan entend Smint, il décide

ronronnements cosmiques, des angles post-punk et
une new wave mutante sans jamais perdre l’énergie
du dancefloor.
4:45pm / 5:30pm : DUM DUM GIRLS (Sub Pop / Los
Angeles - USA) Live
This 100% female quartet goes far beyond the garage/
lo-fi hype that limits some people. Spearheading
today’s abundant American indie scene, the Dum Dum
Girls evoke pop bands of the 60s such as The ShangriLas and The Ronettes. It is not a coincidence that in
2009 they signed two beautiful albums to Sub Pop.
Their third is expected for 2014.

Andy Votel
2:30pm / 9:00pm : FINDERS KEEPERS RECORDS DJs : ANDY VOTEL & DOUG SHIPTON (Finders Keepers /
Manchester - UK ) DJ set
Created in 2005 by Andy Votel, Dom Thomas and Doug Shipton, Finders Keepers Records is a laboratory of
genres, a musical experience full of discoveries in worlds forgotten. The label reissues electronic pop songs
from Pakistan, Persian funk, Welsh folk and Czech soundtracks. The label’s first release is proof of FKR’s
ambition: L’Enfant assassin des mouches from Serge Gainsbourg’s genius arranger, Jean -Claude Vannier.
Far from business objectives, the trio releases what they want to share and what the music world needs.
This risk has always marked the label and works as a starting point for more obscure artist such as Segdan
Bagca, Bruno Spoerri and Jean-Pierre Massiera. Their set will reflect what they stand for – everything that
is eclectic, sharp, surprising and exciting.
ANDY Votel (Finders Keepers / Manchester UK) DJ set
Andy Votel (nickname derived from Violators Of
The English Language, a hip-hop group created in
the 80s) is a pillar of the Manchurian underground
scene. For the past fifteen years, he has been
experimenting with explosive clashes. Mixing
punk and psychedelic jazz, rock and electro, pop
and trip- hop, Andy Votel has two albums to his
credit that have received excellent reviews in the
underground scene and the press but have gone
unnoticed in France. He co-managed Twisted
Nerve Records before founding FKR and in addition
to all this, he is a graphic designer, producer and
director.
DOUG SHIPTON (Finders Keepers /
Manchester - UK ) DJ set
Doug Shipton – reputed record collector, expert
DJ and co-founder of Finders Keepers Records – is
a unique personality in South London where he
knows every nook and cranny.

extra!
Twelve years of Nuits Sonores, and the seventh year of Extra!, the festival’s funky, free daytime program.
Extra! is one of a kind program in Europe, giving anybody and everybody the chance the create an event
and be part of Nuits Sonores. This all works through an open call for projects, what could be better?
But what exactly is Extra! ?
It’s the cherry on the cake for festivalgoers looking for new artistic adventures. Extra! aims to consolidate
the creative, curious side of Nuits Sonores. Extra! knows no limits – there have been all sorts of events
including street running, evolving exhibitions, colour parties, safari photo shoots, dancefloors with a view,
steampunk parties, oyster cabins, techno sport and much, much more.
The fruit of the imagination and energy of people who may never have organised an event before, Extra!
Has become a real work in progress. Since its launch seven years ago, over 89,000 people have taken part
in 215 Extra! events.
Despite its success, the key theme goes unchanged – P-A-R-T-I-C-I-P-A-T-I-O-N! It is almost entirely free,
thought up and set in motion by thirty independent project leaders. Extra! gets your days pumping in preparation for your Nights.

Here is a taste of what you can expect during Nuits Sonores 2014:
La Bise To Love
This is Extra!’s most passionate challenge yet. The biggest kissing session of all time. On the menu – giant
photo shoot just for kissing, kiss meeting, competition for the longest kiss, toffee apples and all-loving DJs.
Food Truck Convention
A food truck is always good. A food truck convention, like in California, is totally Extra!. And there’ll be
some of the best local groove producers to go with your ramen burger, tikka massala and Jamaican Ribs.
It’ll be truckin’ awesome.
PIMP MY CHALET
We have to admit that there have been more clearly defined Extra! projects in the past. But when a record
store owner, a top chef, an award-winning brewer, a solar sound system maker and some ultimate frisbee
players want to get together to put on an event celebrating Savoy’s underground, we just had to say yes.
Brittany Carte Blanche
Extra! is putting on a special Carte Blanche program for the French region of Brittany through a number of
events filled with symbolic galettes, round hats and red beanies. Seeing as the Bretons are always afraid
we will steal their recipes, the details of the program will be revealed in good time. Get ready to fish some
crab and dance around a lighthouse, right in the heart of Lyon.
SVEN MARQUARDT - FUTURE’S PAST
If you like electronic music and you’ve been to Berlin, there is a good chance that you have come across
(or at least heard of) Sven Marquardt. And for good reason. He is also a bouncer at Berghain, one of the
planet’s most mythical clubs. It is not surprising that he is also one of Berlin’s most unique photographers.
He was Rudolf Schäfer’s assistant, and acts as a bridges between his East Berlin roots and his recent experiences in the night-time universe. Through his photographs, he constantly swings between the contradictions and gaps in his Berliner biography. His outlook therefore creates contrasts full of suggestion, which
thus involves tangible tension. His very first exhibition in France (at the Goethe Institute) will take place
during Nuits Sonores. We’ll even throw an Extra! party to celebrate it with him.

AWESOME TAPE FROM PLACE DU PONT
Even if its name changed a few years ago, everybody in Lyon still calls it the Place du Pont. Right in the

embodying the booming scene of electronic hip hop producers in England, has been striving to make their
mark beyond what is already on the hip hop map with his band The Blessings (along with Dominic Flannigan). The Scottish musician and label director will bring his mixing talents to the Nuits Sonores Inauguration.
Douglas Hart (from Jesus and Mary Chain - Glasgow - UK) Dj set
Douglas Hart, founding member of The Jesus and Mary Chain, now works in video, but still with his feet
planted in his rowdy past in British indie rock – he produced clips for bands like Primal Scream, The Stone
Roses and The Horrors. Douglas will do us the honour of spinning the decks at the Inauguration. Here’s
hoping he will whip out his famous dark glasses for the occasion.
NYCO (Groovedge / Lyon - France) Dj set
Resident at Encore events in Lyon, member of the Lyonnais record store Groovedge and partisan for free
creativity - Nyco revels in his sonorous senses. He is the local appearance for the Inauguration, but with a
selection in the spirit of the Carte Blanche program.

Darkside
Synthetic structures, air guitars, rowdy beats. From De La Montagne’s intimacy,
Darkside’s concerning introspection and Marcel Dettmann’s groove come together for a
night of music and dance that’ll take over your body and your mind.
9:00pm / 10:00pm : DE LA MONTAGNE (Bebup /
Lyon - France) Live
De La Montagne’s electro pop was recently selected
by the Inrocks Lab and the Red Bull Music Academy in New York. The local duo is back in Europe
following the release of their clip Girls, and is now
working on a new EP.
10:15pm / 11:15pm : ODEI (Moï Moï Records /
Paris - France) Live
Basque trio Odei came to fame at the Baleapop
festival. They are made up of a jazz/afro-funk
drummer, a vibraphonist/keyboardist and an electro producer. These different musical visions result
in lively electronica, with hints of Caribou, James
Holden and Aufgang. Defining themselves as a
“work in progress”, the band constantly experiments
and evolves and will be presenting their latest live
set at Nuits Sonores.
11:45pm / 12:45am : DARKSIDE (Matador / New
York - US) Live
Highly acclaimed, Darkside is one of today’s crazier
projects. It all started when New York house producer Nicolas Jaar (who played at Nuits Sonores
2011) met multi-instrumentalist Dave Harrington.
Darkside is audacious and unclassifiable. Their first
album, Psychic, released on Matador in October
2013, contains dark, rumbling electro, alternating
powerful beats, psychedelic pop-rock arrangements and futurist sound effects. Somewhere
between Lindstrøm and Pink Floyd, Darkside’s
music is captivating, without compromise and
follows none of today’s trends.
1:00am / 2:30am : KOSME (Cosmic AD - Thema /
Lyon - France) Dj set
Kosme’s overflowing energy makes his music
unique. His vision of house and techno music,
loaded with history and influenced by the Detroit
and Chicago scenes is an experience not to be
missed. This year, Cosmic AD was launched – a new
label in this totally cosmic adventure through an
ever-changing universe.
2:30am / 5:00am : MARCEL DETTMANN (MDR / Berlin
- Germany) Dj set
Marcel Dettmann is a stand-out producer in Berlin
– a true techno titan. Resident DJ at Berghain, leader of the label Ostgut Ton with his brother-in-arms
Ben Klock, Dettmann has contributed to the explosion of the German scene since the early 90s. He
also heads his own label Marcel Dettmann Records
(MDR), and created his own musical identity – free,
independent and without compromise. Dettmann
is always in search of the finest sound and is known
for his intransigence both as a producer and a DJ.

RED BULL MUSIC ACADEMY PRESENTS THE B2B STAGE
Garnier
MCDE
Playing back-to-back is not the easiest job for a DJ but it can bring out a unique and
explosive creation when the participants are in harmony. The artists chosen for Nuits
Sonores all possess unconventional artistic creativity and therefore open up a wide field
of possibilities. One stage, three unique performances, orchestrated by Laurent Garnier,
the Motor City Drum Ensemble, the Glaswegians Jackmaster and Jasper James and the
historic duo Roman Flügel and Axel Boman.

A back-to-back set between Jackmaster from the
prestigious label Numbers (Hudson Mohawke, Jamie

12:00am / 2:00am ROMAN FLÜGEL (Magnet Musik
/ Frankfurt – Germany) B2B AXEL BOMAN (Studio
Barnhus / Stockholm - Sweden) Dj set
Roman Flügel is one of the most influential electro
artists in Europe. With over 25 years of experience
under his belt, this house, ambient and IDM producer made his name with his track Geht’s Noch.
But this dancefloor activist won’t be letting go of his
more underground projects as we can see through
his appearances on labels like Dial. Flügel will face
the Swedish DJ and producer Axel Boman who
regularly plays at some of Europe’s best clubs and is
responsible for the 2010 house hit Purple Drank. Last
year, he returned to the stage and released his first
album on his own highly-acclaimed label, Studio
Barnhus.
2:00am / 5:00am : GARNIER (France) B2B MCDE
(MCDE / Stuttgart – Germany) B2B MCDE (MCDE /

Back this year under the name “Garnier”, Laurent
Garnier has released five EPs on five different
labels, revealing a return to his underground roots
as well as an attachment to new generation music.
He will play back-to-back with one of today’s most
exciting young producers – Daniel Plessow aka
MCDE. Originally a drummer, this lover of punk, hip
hop, soul and disco puts together a deep, festive
sound that will get you moving.

Halfrican
If there is one stage this year that will get guitars bleeding, it’s this one. It’ll be a
concoction of garage, surf and sweat for five bands with razor-sharp teeth that’ll get us
moving all through the night!
9:15pm / 10:00pm : BLACK LUNA (Lyon-Paris – France)
Live
This all-girl rock-garage trio is a little bit, psychedelic, a little bit pop, a little bit swamp and a little
bit blues. They have been sharpening their riffs to
seduce French audiences.
10:30pm / 11:15pm : THE JULIE RUIN (Dischords /
New York – US) Live
After an eight-year break, Kathleen Hanna, the
legendary singer of Bikini Kill and Le Tigre is back. She
is a pillar of the female punk scene and makes herself
heard through vindictive, feminist lyrics. She’ll pull out
her riot girl outfit once again with her new band The
Julie Ruin.
11:45pm / 12:30am : MAN OR ASTRO-MAN? (Estrus
- Touch & Go Records / Auburn - US) Live
Man or Astro-man? come from Auburn, Alabama
and have been wowing America since 1992 with ten
albums and too many concerts to keep track of.
They are true figureheads of instrumental surf music, and can be identified by their use of samples
from science-fiction films of the 50s and 60s. They
reformed in 2013 and this year marks their return
to Lyon, fifteen years after their appearance at the
PezNer.
1:00am / 1:45am : BLACK LIPS (Vice Records /
Atlanta - US) Live
Heirs of the 60s garage rock scene – the era of the
Sonics and the Kinks – the Black Lips define their
grungy DIY garage rock as “Flower Punk”. Known
for their energetic stage performances, the Black
Lips have gathered a tribe of fans ranging from
young amateurs to those nostalgic of the early
days of punk. Following on from Arabia Mountain
produced by Mark Ronson, the Black Lips are back
in 2014 with their seventh studio album Underneath
the Rainbow produced by Patrick Carney of the
Black Keys.
2:15am / 3:00am : HALFRICAN (El Rancho / Glasgow - UK) Live
The Scottish city of Glasgow is the capital of raw,
earthy rock. Echoing the Carte Blanche program,
Halfrican is a force to be reckoned with. The trio’s
first EP Hot! Hot! Hot!, released in 2013, encapsulates wild exuberance and explosive rock.
3:15am / 4:15am : LEGOWELT (Clone Records /
The Hague - Netherlands) Live
Legowelt is the alias of Danny Wolfers, who is
somewhat the schizophrenic genius of the electro
world. Inspired by the Detroit and Chicago scenes,
he was a proud representative of the mysterious
and flourishing scene of The Hague in the 90s.

House music has long been associated with DJs, dabbling producers and sampling snags.
Today, nerds are taking control of digital orchestration by reworking and revitalising house

Huerco S’s tracks are reminiscent of Oneohtrix

decomposing beats make up the ingredients for his
extremely ambient retro-futuristic music.

The young Brit Sam Sheppard, aka Floating Points,
has the wind in his sails and has caught the attention
of more than just one talent scout. He is obsessed
with 45 rpm records and has collaborated with
Bonobo. His jazzy deep-house contains a subtle hint
of bass and has already seduced Ninja Tune and
Planet Mu.
1:30am / 4:00am : FOUR TET (Text Records / London – UK) Live
Sometimes, stability needs mobility. Kieran Hebden,
aka Four Tet, has stood out as a figure of stability
over the years, releasing seven albums since 1999
made up of the same electro-techno-jazz mix.
Thanks to his days with the post-rock band Fridge,
he has kept up his enthusiasm for his most recent
release, Beautiful Rewind, released in 2013 on his
own label, Text Records.
4:00am / 5:00am : RUSTIE (Numbers - LuckyMe Warp / Glasgow – UK) Live
Rustie is one of the most promising musicians of
the Scottish (or should we even say British) electronic scene. Mixing bass music, hip-hop and R&B,
he sets himself apart with his hybrid approach.
His first album, Glass Words, released in 2011, was
highly acclaimed by The Guardian, his mix for

amongst the bevy of heroes forgotten through

The Montrealers Suuns’ cracking 2010 album set

spEcial concert / kraftwerk 3D
AT NUITS SONORES : A DREAM COME TRUE
For the whole team Arty Farty, young and old, Kraftwerk is the absolute reference group for the Nuits
Sonores project. Inviting the legendary Düsseldorf band for a Special Concert is both a shared dream and
an obvious choice.
We chose Kraftwerk first and foremost for their pioneering role in the incredible history of electronic
culture, as well as their extraordinary consistency and unparalleled artistic standards. We must also mention the crazy universe they managed to create and continue to evoke around their music.
Who could forget the road movie scenes from Christopher Small’s Radio On, the old Radio-Activity cassette
spinning or the dark melancholic opening notes of Geiger Counter?
For many of us, it all started with our parents’ beautiful vinyls. Autobahn, Trans-Europe Express and the
incredible The Man Machine which lent its name to the first techno DJ agency in Lyon set up by two of
Nuits Sonores’ founders. Kraftwerk is also about the power of stage design and scenography which is very
important to Nuits Sonores and our two architects, Laurent Graber and Antoine Trollat. Different bands’
consistency and origins as well as industrial sites have formed the majestic backdrop to Nuits Sonores for
the past twelve years.
This is also the perfect representation of the Images Sonores program that we created in 2006. This twelveyear dream, which started when the festival did, is now becoming a reality. Festivalgoers can be sure that
this year Kraftwerk - who have not played in Lyon since 1991 (at the Transbordeur) – will play at Nuits
Sonores.
This time, it’s definite, and we are rapt to present Kraftwerk to our audience and include their name in the
Nuits Sonores Hall of Fame.

spEcial CONCERT / kraftwerk 3D
Kraftwerk 3D (Allemagne) Live
The Kraftwerk project was launched in 1970 by Ralf Hütter and his partner Florian Schneider in their Kling
legendary Klang Studio in Düsseldorf, Germany. A few years on, Kraftwerk was internationally-renowned
for their revolutionary electronic «sound paintings» and musical experimentation. Working from these
visions of the future, Kraftwerk created the soundtrack to the digital age.
The band’s compositions, using the most innovative techniques of loops and computerised rhythms, had a
major international impact on a wide range of musical genres. Kraftwerk’s use of robotics and other technological innovations during their stage performances showed their conviction in the exchange between
man and machine in the process of artistic creation. Kraftwerk’s performances are perfectly synchronized
audiovisual experiences, enhanced by perfect digital sound and 3D projections.
In 2013, Kraftwerk presented their catalog 12345678 over either nights at the Tate Modern in London, the
Sydney Opera House and the Akasaka Blitz in Tokyo.

arty farty
Born and raised in Lyon, France since 1999, Arty Farty is a strongly European non-profit organisation. This year, we will be celebrating our fifteenth birthday. We originally
concentrated solely on electronic and independent culture, but have spread our
wings to include visual culture, entrepreneurial reflection, cultural engineering and
innovation. Arty Farty is an atypical organisation for cultural event production, artistic
management, advisory missions and artistic direction for businesses, collectives, cultural
institutions and festivals in France and abroad.
Arty Farty specialises in the creation, editing, production and direction of current arts
and culture projects. We run three main events – the Nuits Sonores festival and the
European Lab forum in Lyon and Nuits Sonores Tangier in Morocco. It is important to us
to understand how to integrate an environment and adapt to geopolitical, economic,
social and cultural conditions. Arty Farty is a social and political organisation, sensitive
to its global environment and its day and age, which has always aimed to be a positive
figure in its field.
