He knelt on the good knee,
still lost in an aura of adoration,
and offered his spotted left hand as
either an invitation or a testament
to his ardor. In his eyes we could
see this gesture was the end of his
story, no need for a response. And
when her arm drifted upwards
and her hand descended softly
into his, landing like a leaf, he was
more surprised than we were. His
eyes closed in a deeper satisfaction
as he placed his lips gently on
her hand.
Then Lesley Rausch, with a hint
of a blush, helped Jacques d’Amboise
up off of his knee. Big smiles and
moist eyes were everywhere.
“I added the kiss!” exclaimed
Jacques, “and Mr. Balanchine told
me to leave it in.”
Over the past two months, our
dancers have enjoyed the privilege
of working with five members
of the original cast of Jewels,
including Jacques d’Amboise,
Suzanne Farrell, Mimi Paul,
Violette Verdy, and Edward Villella.
Our friend Bob Benson is to be
thanked for making this possible by
helping to bring four out of five to
Seattle. (Laura Tisserand and Karel
Cruz flew to the Kennedy Center
in Washington, DC, to work with

performance of Jewels in 1967 and

recut like the facets of a jewel. Jacques
asked us to stand still and just listen
as Tchaikovsky introduced the
heightened tension of the pas de deux.
A favorite comment from Suzanne:
“There’s no story, but that doesn’t
mean there isn’t plenty of drama.”
As I write these notes, we have
yet to receive Mimi, Violette, and
Edward into our studios, but I’ve had
the privilege of working with all three
in the past and know they will bring a
treasure chest of stories and experience
to our rehearsals. Elyse Borne has
been the glue for this staging, having
taught every step and count, and
having collated a few dozen versions
into the one we perform. Her steeltrap memory, unmatched efficiency,
and unexpected humor are always
appreciated at PNB.
We lost the greatest choreographer
of our time over thirty years ago with
the passing of George Balanchine, but
we are surrounded by those artists who
shared the studio with him, helping
to make his choreography come to
life. They bring him back through
memories that make us laugh, sigh,
and understand. Though this crowd
now hovers on either side of eighty,
they are brimming with clarity, insight,
and uncanny demonstration. They
have helped us to rediscover Jewels and
the man himself. Fauré, Stravinsky, and
Tchaikovsky were in our studios, too,
along with a whole host of characters
from a bygone era. Jacques, Suzanne, Mimi,
Violette, and Edward, thank you for sharing
and adding luster to an already brilliant
ballet. May we remember how beautifully
you have passed the torch, and may we one
day do the same.

FROM THE CHAIRMAN
Dear Friends,
The Pacific Northwest
Ballet Board of Trustees
welcomes you back
to McCaw Hall after
a glorious Seattle
summer. I am delighted
you’re with us for the first production of
what will be a truly specular season. With
George Balanchine’s Jewels, PNB kicks off a
year-long 25th anniversary celebration of our
renowned orchestra, led by Music Director
and Principal Conductor, Emil de Cou.
Throughout the summer, our studios
have been bustling with choreographers as
well as talented Summer Course students
from around the nation. Additionally, our
Company dancers on tour drew high praise
alongside other world-famous artists at
Jacob’s Pillow Dance Festival and Wolf Trap
National Park for the Performing Arts.
PNB’s Annual Meeting (September 24)
ushered in a fresh leadership team, with
several new committee chairs to invigorate
our volunteer efforts. I am honored and
privileged to serve as Chairman of the Board
of Trustees with Joan Fitzmaurice as Board
President. Most importantly, Ellen Walker has
stepped into her role as PNB’s new Executive
Director. Ellen’s wealth of experience adds
depth to our organization; she is a resourceful
partner and fully committed to joining forces
on plans for PNB’s future.
I am also pleased to announce that an
anonymous donor has made a $150,000
challenge gift to inspire unrestricted annual
support this season. Such gifts are vital to
the success of the arts and are the backbone
of PNB. From now until June 30, every dollar
a donor provides to the annual fund, beyond
their previous giving level, will be matched
by this challenge gift.
With the start of the season, I would
like to express our deepest gratitude to our
Season Sponsors: ArtsFund and Microsoft
Corporation. I would also like to thank
Bob & Cynthia Benson, Peter & Peggy
Horvitz, and H. David Kaplan for their
sponsorship of Jewels, and HSBC, the Title
Sponsor of First Look Season Opening Gala,
for their generous support of this special
evening. Finally, PNB is grateful for Jewels
Supporting Sponsors: Van Cleef & Arpels
and Neiman Marcus. As Mr. Balanchine’s
inspiration for Jewels, Van Cleef & Arpels
is a longtime supporter of ballet around
the world, and we thank them for their
commitment to championing ballet here in
the Pacific Northwest.

February 3, 1988)
PNB PREMIERE:
At its New York City Ballet premiere in
1967, George Balanchine’s Jewels was
touted as the first “plotless full-length
ballet.” The story goes that Balanchine was
inspired to create the ballet after a visit to
the New York jeweler Claude Arpels of Van
Cleef and Arpels. While each of its three
ballets—Emeralds, Rubies, and Diamonds—
may not follow any definitive narrative,
like real gems themselves, each can be
viewed in multiple ways and from a variety
of angles. The great American dance
critic, Arlene Croce, described Jewels as
“unsurpassed as a Balanchine primer,
incorporating in a single evening every
important article of faith to which this
choreographer subscribed and a burst of
heresy, too.” Balanchine himself, in his
typical noncommittal way, stated, “Of
course, I have always liked jewels; after
all, I am an Oriental, from Georgia in the
Caucasus. I like the color of gems, the
beauty of stones, and it was wonderful to
see how our costume workshop, under
Jodie Thomas and Jonathan Porretta in Rubies, choreography by George Balanchine

Karinska’s direction, came so close to the
quality of real stones (which were of course
too heavy for the dancers to wear!).”
Emeralds
Gabriel Fauré (from Pelléas et
Melisande, 1898, and Shylock, 1889)
MUSIC:
Emeralds is a romantic evocation of
France. It is also Balanchine’s comment on
the French school of dancing and its rich
heritage. France is the birthplace of classical
ballet and French is its language. With a score
by Gabriel Fauré and dancers dressed in
Romantic-length tutus, Emeralds can also be
a window on the nostalgia inherent in much
late 19th-century art, with its idealized
view of the Middle Ages, chivalry, and
courtly love. The ballet features two ballerinas, roles originally choreographed for
Violette Verdy and Mimi Paul. Balanchine
considered Emeralds “an evocation of
France – the France of elegance, comfort,
dress and perfume.”
Rubies
Igor Stravinsky (Capriccio for piano
and orchestra, 1929)
MUSIC:

Trust. © Angela Sterling.
8 PACIFIC NORTHWEST BALLET
Rubies is the central ballet of Balanchine’s
full-length Jewels, which premiered in its
entirety in 2006 at Pacific Northwest Ballet.
Choreographed for Patricia McBride and
Edward Villella, two of the most vivacious
dancers in American dance history, plus
a supporting female lead and a corps of
twelve, Rubies effuses glam wit and jazzy
chic. The saucy leading couple plays
and competes as equals, and a second,
siren-like ballerina takes on the men of
the corps de ballet, requiring all four of
them to partner her at once. Former PNB
Director of Education Jeanie Thomas wrote,
“‘Capriciousness’ [referring to the title of
Stravinsky’s score] might also be said to
characterize Balanchine’s choreography,
which is half elegant, half street-smart.
With its jutting hips, flexed feet, show biz
kicks and witty counter-rhythms, Rubies is
a many-faceted example of the exuberantly
distorted classicism that Balanchine
invented to render Stravinsky’s musical
idiom three-dimensionally.”
Diamonds
Peter Ilyich Tchaikovsky (Symphony
No. 3 in D major, Op. 29, 1875, first
movement omitted)
MUSIC:
Diamonds is George Balanchine’s homage
to his native St. Petersburg, Russia.
The ballet pays homage to Balanchine’s
youth: the grandeur of St. Petersburg,
the Maryinsky Theater, and the Imperial
Ballet, where Balanchine trained. Echoes of
Petipa’s Swan Lake and Raymonda abound.
The centerpiece of the ballet is an intimate
pas de deux, potent in its chivalrous
reserve, for the ballerina and her cavalier,
originally choreographed for Suzanne
Farrell and Jacques d’Amboise. At its end,
the entire cast joins the principal couple for
a gloriously spirited polonaise.
Notes by Doug Fullington.

orchestra (Rubies) by arrangement with Boosey
& Hawkes, Inc., publisher and copyright owner.

HISTORY AND FOUNDING
K
“The playing of the Pacific Northwest Ballet Orchestra…remains the finest of
any American ballet troupe.” — Alastair Macaulay (The New York Times, June 11, 2014)
The Pacific Northwest Ballet Orchestra. © Rodger Burnett
Although the mighty PNB Orchestra celebrates its 25th
anniversary on November 7 of this year, Pacific Northwest Ballet
has demonstrated a dedication to live orchestral accompaniment
since its inception as Pacific Northwest Dance in 1972.
Early programs, including PND’s first Nutcracker, credit the
Pacific Northwest Dance Orchestra. For most of the early performances, ballet programs noted either that the orchestra was
composed of members of the Seattle Symphony Orchestra or that
the orchestra consisted of SSO members and members of the
Musicians’ Association of Seattle.
During this time, PNB participated in a tri-partite agreement
with the Seattle Symphony Orchestra and Seattle Opera; the
musicians were members of the Musicians’ Union, Local 76.
PNB was not completely satisfied with its participation in the
agreement and throughout the 1980s pursued ways to separate
itself from it.
In 1988, the musicians affiliated with the International Guild of
Symphony, Opera, and Ballet Musicians. Around that same time,
PNB took steps to establish its own orchestra totally independent
from the Seattle Symphony and negotiated on its own with the
Guild. As PNB President and CEO Arthur Jacobus described,
PNB signed a three-year contract with Guild musicians on
November 7, 1989, “to form an orchestra of 49 musicians to play
for all Ballet performances.” (Nutcracker program, December 1989)
12 PACIFIC NORTHWEST BALLET
Jacobus continued:
“While the use of the Seattle Symphony musicians over
nearly the past two decades has played a significant role in
Pacific Northwest Ballet’s development, the availability of
a single orchestra to three grown and successful organizations has become increasingly tight. This is a positive move
for everybody. It gives the Symphony and Opera more access
to their orchestra, and it gives the players a more reasonable
performance and rehearsal schedule.
What it does for Pacific Northwest Ballet is to provide
a consistent orchestra for all of our performances—an
ensemble of excellent musicians who are dedicated to
performing for the ballet.”
Twenty-five years on, the PNB Orchestra has expanded to a
roster of 57 musicians, of which 10 are founding members. Its legacy
as a standard-bearer for ballet orchestras nationwide is a gift to PNB
dancers and audiences alike.

“The music is of paramount importance. Because a
ballet company presents new works all the time, it
is possible to offer a more varied musical menu than
most symphony orchestras...we like to think of our
performances as concerts as well as dance events.
“Stewart Kershaw, music director and friend of
many, many years, has shaped an orchestra that
we believe is supreme in the dance world, certainly
now surpassing any other ballet orchestra in this
country. Allan Dameron, conductor and pianist, is the
consummate musician and enthusiastic collaborator.
Whether on the podium or at the piano Allan finds
joy in every note.
“We are especially proud of the rapport between
the musicians and the rest of the Company…we are
even more proud of the superb quality of the PNB
Orchestra…it is obvious that our perceptive audiences
understand just how fortunate we are to have these
fine artists in the orchestra pit. Over the years we
have developed very real bonds with the members of
our orchestra. We thank them for their hard work, we
thank them for their loyal support, and, above all, we
thank them for the thrill of their performance.”

ABOUT THE ARTISTS
George Balanchine
Karinska
Elyse Borne
Choreographer, Jewels
Costume Designer, Jewels
Stager, Jewels
Born in St.
Petersburg, Russia,
George Balanchine
(1904-1983) is
regarded as the
foremost contemporary choreographer
in the world of ballet.
He came to the
United States in late 1933, at the age of 29,
accepting the invitation of the young
American arts patron Lincoln Kirstein
(1907-96), whose great passions included
the dream of creating a ballet company in
America. At Balanchine’s behest, the School
of American Ballet was founded in 1934,
the first product of the Balanchine-Kirstein
collaboration. Several ballet companies
directed by the two were created and
dissolved in the years that followed, while
Balanchine found other outlets for his
choreography. Eventually, with a performance
on October 11, 1948, the New York City
Ballet was born. Balanchine served as its
ballet master and principal choreographer
from 1948 until his death in 1983.
Balanchine’s more than 400 dance works
include Serenade (1934), Concerto Barocco
(1941), Le Palais de Cristal, later renamed
Symphony in C (1947), Orpheus (1948), The
Nutcracker (1954), Agon (1957), Symphony
in Three Movements (1972), Stravinsky Violin
Concerto (1972), Vienna Waltzes (1977),
Ballo della Regina (1978), and Mozartiana
(1981). His final ballet, a new version of
Stravinsky’s Variations for Orchestra , was
created in 1982. He also choreographed
for films, operas, revues, and musicals.
Among his best-known dances for the stage
is Slaughter on Tenth Avenue, originally
created for Broadway’s On Your Toes (1936).
The musical was later made into a movie.
A major artistic figure of the twentieth
century, Balanchine revolutionized the look
of classical ballet. Taking classicism as his
base, he heightened, quickened, expanded,
streamlined, and even inverted the fundamentals of the 400-year-old language of
academic dance. This had an inestimable
influence on the growth of dance in
America. Although at first his style seemed
particularly suited to the energy and speed
of American dancers, especially those he
trained, his ballets are now performed by
all the major classical ballet companies
throughout the world.
Barbara Karinska
was one of the great
dance costumers of
the twentieth
century. Her fiftyyear career cannot
be separated from
that of her principal
collaborator, choreographer George Balanchine, who said of
her, “There is Shakespeare for literature
and Madame Karinska for costumes.” She
designed costumes for more than seventyfive of his ballets, and was the first costumer
ever to win the Capezio Dance Award, for
costumes “of visual beauty for the spectator
and complete delight for the dancer.”
Karinska was born in the Ukraine in
1886, and she fled the Bolsheviks and
Russia forever in 1924 with the family
jewels stitched inside her daughter’s hat and
muff. She first designed for Balanchine in
1932 for the Ballets Russes, and though her
most remarkable achievement is the 9,000
costume collection she made for New York
City Ballet, she inspired design throughout
the performing arts—from musicals and
dramas on Broadway to ice shows, cabarets,
and burlesque revues. Karinska costumed
top Hollywood stars in eleven movies of the
1940s and ‘50s, and she won the first Oscar
given for costume design for “Joan of Arc,”
starring Ingrid Bergman.
Karinska designed a tutu that wholly
changed the look of Balanchine ballets and
dancers. The “powder-puff ” tutu was the
answer to Balanchine’s search for a more
flattering tutu than the flat nineteenthcentury “pancake” style. Karinska shortened
the tutu to expose more leg, layered the
skirt so it would fall softly on the hips and
have a lively bounce, and cut the bodice
panels on the bias for a corseted look that
would allow the dancer to breathe.
“To the New York City Ballet, I gave my
heart,” said Karinska. She took her farewell
bow in New York City at age 92, dressed in a
glorious swirl of Parisian satin that adorned
the stage in Balanchine’s Vienna Waltzes.
At her death, in 1983, she left behind a legacy
of thousands upon thousands of costumes
and an unprecedented union of choreography and design.
Elyse Borne began
dance training in her
native Los Angeles
and finished at the
School of American
Ballet in New York
as a recipient of a
Ford Foundation
scholarship. She was
invited to join New York City Ballet, where
she danced for thirteen and a half years,
rising to the rank of soloist in 1983. Her
principal Balanchine roles include
The Nutcracker (sharing a debut with
Mikhail Baryshnikov), Vienna Waltzes,
Apollo, Harlequinade, Tchaikovsky Suite
#3, Divertimento No. 15, Symphony in C,
A Midsummer Night’s Dream, Union Jack,
and Emeralds. She also made several
television appearances in “Dance in
America” and “Live from Lincoln Center.”
She traveled nationally and internationally
with Mikhail Baryshnikov, Peter Martins,
Suzanne Farrell, Jean Pierre Bonnefous,
Patricia McBride, and Edward Villella.
In 1986, she became the principal
ballet mistress for Miami City Ballet, and
in 1994, she began devoting herself full
time to staging ballets for the George
Balanchine Trust and teaching. She has
staged more than 30 ballets for Miami
City Ballet, Boston Ballet, Pennsylvania
Ballet, Cincinnati Ballet, Singapore Dance
Theatre, Pittsburgh Ballet Theatre, Central
Ballet of China, Alberta Ballet, Kirov Ballet,
Dutch National Ballet, South African Ballet
Theatre, Ballet West, Norwegian National
Ballet, National Ballet of Canada, and San
Francisco Ballet, among others. Borne has
also taught and coached at Royal Swedish
Ballet and was a ballet mistress with San
Francisco Ballet from 1997 to 2002.
