1. General Ha Noi
Magine a city where the exotic chic of old Asia blends with the dynamic face of
new Asia. Where the medieval and modern co-exist. A city with a blend of Parisian
grace and Asian pace, an architectural museum piece evolving in harmony with its
history, rather than bulldozing through like many of the region’s capitals. Hanoi is
where imagination becomes reality.
The grand old dame of Asia, Hanoi lay in a deep slumber after Vietnam’s
partition in 1954 until the effects of economic reforms kicked in four decades later.
The city survived American bombs to emerge relatively unscathed in the early 1990s
as an example of a French-conceived colonial city. Huge mansions line grand
boulevards, and lakes and parks dot the city, providing a romantic backdrop to the
nonstop soundtrack. There are still moments of Paris, as the smell of baguettes
and café au lait permeates street corners.
Known by many names down the centuries, Thanh Long (City of the Soaring
Dragon) is the most evocative, and let there be no doubt that this dragon is on the up
once more.
Since 2008, Hanoi is one of the largest capitals all over the world!!!!!!
The streets of Hanoi are quite complicated, so if you want to find them easier, you
should bring the map wherever you go. You can buy it in airport, souvenir shop or
any bookshops you see. Price: 7,000 to 10,000 VND
2. Weather
Generally, Vietnam has 2 seasons, the dry season and the rainy season. However,
in Hanoi, you can enjoy 4 seasons in a year.
 Spring: From Jan to March: The weather is cool with a little rain. Thus, it’s
quite wet and it makes much inconvenience to go out.
 Summer: From April to August. Moreover, the weather between Spring and
Summer (often in the end of March to May), is so hard. The difference
between night and day is big. Many people are sick at this time so, make sure
that you can take care yourself carefully. Summer weather is so hot. The
temperature is often from 23 degree (at night) to about 35 degree Celsius. In
addition, it has also sudden hard rain. It requires you a lot of summer clothes
and make sure that you always bring your raincoat or umbrella when you go
out
 Autumn: It’s is considered as the most beautiful weather in Hanoi. The
weather is cool and comfortable, best time to hang out with friends.
 Winter: The degree is between 10-20 and it’s cold, dry with no rain during 2
months. It’s also the time you get sick easily: flu, sore throat, etc. Make sure
that you have enough warm clothes and keep you warm when you go out.

3.Architecture
One world to say about Hanoi architecture is AMAZING. In Hanoi, you can
see 3 kinds of architect: Asian style, French style and modern style with a lot of
sky-scrappers.
In Old Quarter, a cauldron of commerce for almost 1000 years and still the
best place to check the pulse of this resurgent city, you can find old houses in Asian
style, a 50-year-old houses that you can’t find in anywhere all over the world. It’s
make you feel as if you are in 19th but not 20th century. In here, time doesn’t fly.
You’ll also see many buildings in a French style like Big Theatre and Opera
Hilton and many other places. It’s chance for all of you to discover French culture in
a capital of Asia- an unique feeling.
Moreover, of course, modern outlook: sky scrappers are the most common
things you can see in Hanoi: Hoa Binh tower, Parkson, Melia hotel, etc.
Come and enjoy Hanoi
You will never forget your time here!!!!
V.GENERAL INFORMATION
1. Accommodation
1.1. Renting
a) Apartment
An apartment usually offers full facilities like electricity, internet, water
supply, washing machine, air conditioner and other things. It is larger in size and
more comfortable to stay in, but of course, more expensive. The advantage is that you
can share this type of accommodation with other people to reduce the cost.
Renting fee
this varies, but often more than US$ 400 per month. You can negotiate price
with the house owners if you prefer (but usually if you are to stay for more
than 3-4 months)
Location
These apartments can be found in the Old Quarter (city centre) and the
surrounding areas like Dien Bien Phu, Hai Ba Trung. Some examples of
available apartments:
1. An apartment in Luong Van Can St. (Old quarter), 40m2, full facilities
as mentioned above. You can share your room with other people. Price:
380 USD (no negotiation yet)
2. An apartment in Van Ho (2 km from city centre), 35m2, and full
facilities as mentioned above. Price: US$ 350 (no negotiation yet)

b) Room/ Studio
Small room in an apartment or a studio itself, cheaper in price but not as good
facilities, smaller in size of course. The advantage is that you can save more money
when renting this type of accommodation.
Renting fee
This also varies, but often less than US$ 250 per month. You can also share
this with your friends if you wish, but keep in mind the size of the room is
often less than 25m2. And since they are cheaper, it’s often more difficult to
negotiate the price.
Location
These rooms or studios are often farther from city centre than the apartment
type. The cheapest ones are located near students’ living blocks, with less
facility.
Some examples are:
1. A two-room-apartment in the area of University of Technology, 20m2
each, price 220-US $250 per month, full facilities.
2. A room in Hang Bo (Old quarter), 25m2, US$ 180 per month, full
facilities.
Notice
-
Electricity/Water/Internet usage is charged fee.
-
If you break the contract, you will likely lose your deposit, totally
or partially.
- There are many things that need to be consider, not only the price,
such as the distance from your house to your workplace. If it’s too far

away then you will probably waste more time and money for
traveling than renting a nearer one with more expensive price.
Tips
AIESEC Hanoi will help you to find your accommodation.
1.2. Homestay
The best way to discover and enjoy Vietnamese culture is staying with
Vietnamese family. If you want to stay with a Vietnamese family, please tell us,
AIESEC will help you to find the most suitable house for you. Staying with
Vietnamese family, you not also learn Vietnamese better than ever but also learn how
to cook Vietnamese dishes (I bet that it’s the thing that attracts you most)

daunting at first. Many guesthouses and cafés offer these for rent for about $1 to $2
per day.

2. Bus and minibus
Bus is the most popular way for travelers on a tight budget to choose: 3000 - 5000

Bus in Hanoi
Tips
You can find the bus lines in the travel map of Hanoi (7K – 10K/map)

3. Cyclo
Like the "beca" or trishaw in Penang, and the “tuk tuk” in Thailand, these
cyclos are a must ride in Hanoi! That said, it is a wonderful way to see things in style,
and at a human pace rather than whizzing past in taxis. Cyclo is a cheap
transportation around Hanoi. However, just use cyclo when you want to go for
sightseeing but not far.
Tips
Make sure you know where you want to go. Negotiate with the price
before you hop on. Don't bargain too hard. Around the Old Quarter we
usually pay the cyclo driver around $4 to $5. They will accept US
dollar.

4. “Xe ôm” ( hired carried motorcycle )
For lone travelers, rides on the back of motorbikes (actually low-powered
scooters) are popular too (known as “xe om”, literally meaning motorbike-hug).
Xe ôm – hired carried motorcycle
Tips
Negotiate with the price before you hop on. Often 3000 VND – 4000
VND/km.

5. Motorcycles:
Can be rented for around US$5-6 a day, and can be arranged by most
hotels. This is good for making lots of trips around the city for individuals or duos,
but be careful. Transportation in Hanoi is quite complicated so make sure that you are
brave enough to drive motorcycles here. We suggest that in your first one or two
months, you should ask a friend go with you.
Motorcycles
Tips
Hanoi traffic is very difficult place to sharpen motorbike skills. Park on the sidewalk
with other bikes, and be sure to lock the front wheel. Locals will help arrange the bikes
near their stores.

6. Taxi
The best way to travel long distances, but the cyclos, or pedicabs, are a cheap way to
make shorter trips. Taxi fares are not always consistent, and the rates for each taxi
company have not been standardized.
Taxi
Tips
The recommendation is to only use the reputable and reliable taxi
companies. These are Mai Linh taxi (38.61.61.61) and Taxi CP
(38.26.26.26)

2. Cheques
Cheques with value as Vietnamese dong include: VND 1,000,000 and 500,000.
 Foreign currencies and tourist cheques can be exchanged into Vietnamese
Dong at banks or foreign exchange agencies.
 Credit cards are popularly used, especially in cities and big tourism centers.
 Before leaving Vietnam, Vietnamese dong can be changed into foreign
currencies at the airport.
3. Traveler‟s Cheques
Traveler’s check is a good way to carry money around Vietnam because the
exchange rate is fixed and it can be replaced in case of lost or stolen. Checks can also
be easily exchangeable in banks.
Tips
You may exchange Traveler Cheques at the branch offices of the
Vietcombank and the Vietnamese overseas export company Cosevina. It's
easiest to exchange Traveler Cheques issued in US Dollars.

4. Credit Card
Most major credit cards such as Visa, Master card and American Express are
very usefully in the big cities and some tourist sites too. Those cards can be used in
the most mid range to the high-end class hotels and some luxury restaurants. You can
also get the cash advances from ATMs of the almost Vietnamese banks especially
Vietcombank.
Banks in Vietnam has developed a large number of ATM networks but it is not
recommended to trust completely in ATM because sometimes you cannot get cash
from them especially during lunar New Year. Furthermore, many shops and
restaurants don’t accept credit cards as a payment method.
Currency Regulations
You can bring as much as money to Vietnam as you can. There is no limit on
amount of foreign currency but you must declare to the customs. At this time, the
minimum amount of money for declaration is 7000$.
If you go downtown, there are actually lots of banks over there, but I would
like to share with you 2 particular banks located in Hanoi:
o ANZ bank is actually located in 14 Le Thai To Street. ANZ bank is
surrounded by the security for 24 solid hours. You can also get ATM as
well.
o The other bank is named as Vietcombank. It is located in 198 Tran Quang
Khai street. This bank offers ATM as well.
Best avoided
Are the local characters offering exchange services on the street, as their rates are
generally the worst and their honesty is often questionable.

ATM machine
ATMs can be found in various locations, especially in the main tourist areas
such as around Hoan Kiem Lake and in the Old Quarter. Machines accept most
foreign cards, although it’s wise to bring a card endorsed or issued by a reputable
credit firm such as American Express, MasterCard, Visa, Maestro, Cirrus or Diners
Club. Withdrawal charges may be made by the user’s bank or card issuer.

Many people say, they love “bún” at first sight and I myself totally agree with them.
Bún is made of rice (like phở) but it’s much cooler and thinner. And people always
say: If Phở is a boy, Bún will be a girl. Hanoi is a heaven of “bún” with a lot of types.

Cha ca (Hanoi Fried Fish with Dill Recipe)
Cha Ca Street - There is a street in Hanoi called Cha Ca Street, where all the
restaurants specialize in this dish. The most famous is Cha Ca La Vong, a tiny
restaurant that has been owned by the same family for generations and which
claims to have first popularized cha ca. This recipe usually uses the local Red
River fish, carp and catfish, and is served with piquant dipping sauces such as

1.b. Special dishes of Hanoi
We’ll list some dishes that I bet that you have never tried them in your life. Something much
more delicious than I can describe
Cốm Vòng (Vong village green- rice)
Com is made from young glutinous rice, when the rice begins to ripen and still
contains milk and fragrance. During its season, autumn, com can be seen on
almost every street. The peddlers cry out loudly: "com, com...", but often it is
unnecessary, as they are easily recognized by their paraphernalia: they shoulder
two light bamboo baskets (com is not so heavy as other products) with lotus
leaves on the top and a small bundle of paddy stems tied to the basket carriers,
which are used to wrap and tie com.

Some places you HAVE TO visit if you want to know more about Hanoi. It
doesn’t take you much time but it’ll bring you much more experience and
memories than you thought. These spots contains Hanoi history, soul of
Hanoians. Like a rainbow after rain, these spots lights up the whole city.
a) Hoan Kiem Lake
Hoan Kiem Lake, meaning "Lake of the Returned Sword" or "Lake of the

and serves as a focal point for its public life.

Near the northern shore of the lake lies Jade Island on which the Ngoc Son
Temple (Jade Mountain Temple) stands. Jade Island is connected to the shore by
the wooden red-painted The Huc Bridge (The Huc meaning Morning Sunlight
Bridge).
You can also see the Tortoise Tower (Thap Rua) standing on a small island near
the center of lake. It’s related to a legend about the lake.
b) The Old Quarter
As the oldest area of the city, the history of Hanoi's Old Quarter spans 2000
years. It lies between the Returned Sword Lake to the South and the Long Bien
Bridge to the North. The former city rampart, now called Tran Nhat Duat Street,
marks its East border and the citadel wall on Ly Nam De Street marks its West.
When King Lý Thái Tổ moved his capital from Hoa Lư to Thăng Long in 1010
the Old Quarter was the trading hub of the new capital, and it was here in the
13th century that 36 guilds were established, each occupying a different street hence the original name '36 Streets'.
Today there are around 50 streets in the Old Quarter, most of them named after
the merchandise originally produced by their residents, eg Hàng Gai (silk), Hàng
Quạt (fans), Hàng Giày (shoes), Hàng Bạc (silver), although comparatively few
streets now specialize in any particular trade.

And other places we suggest if you have more time:
g) Bat Trang Village
Bat Trang is very famous of its pottery. You can get there by bus 47, start at
Long Bien bus stop and the last stop is in front of Bat Trang market, center of
the village.
g) Hoa Lo prison
While other prisons were often located far from the urban area, Hoa Lo prison
(Maison Centrale) was built in the centre of Hanoi by the French colonists in
1896. The Vietnamese have bitter memories of the prison, for many Vietnamese
revolutionaries were kept and tortured there. This place used to be the toughest
prison in Indochina. In 1954 it held more than 2000 people in subhuman
conditions.

From 1964 to 1973, this place was used to kept American pilots shot down
during bombing raids. One of them was P. Peterson who was then the first
American Ambassador in Vietnam. John McCain -the American senator- also
spent parts of his five and half a years as a POW there. He revisited this place in
his trip to Hanoi in April 2009.
Nowadays, Hoa Lo prison is a museum with precious documents and objects. It
remains the symbol of Vietnamese patriotism and heroism.
h) Bo De pagoda
Bo De pagoda lies on the bank of the infamous Red River. If you are tired of the
noise and the dizzying pace of city life, this is the right place to be. Everything is
very modest and peaceful here that makes it an excellent place for meditation
and relaxing your mind.
However, this is not an ordinary pagoda.

For the last 20 years, this pagoda has been home of more than 64 foundlings.
Each of the children here has a different story. Some of them were abandoned
by their parents at the pagoda’s gate when they were just a few days old. Some
others were picked up at hospitals and markets
.
One of the most interesting things here is that most of the children are named
“Anh” by the monks. From this name, they hope that the children will be
blessed. In addition, they want them to consider each other brothers and sisters
(“Anh” in Vietnamese literally means “brother”) and remember the little modest
pagoda of their childhood.
Your trip to Hanoi will be more meaningful than ever by visiting this place.
Bring some gifts and candies for the children and you will also give them joy in
their sorrowful lives. Remember, these unfortunate children need you!

VII. HANOI CHARMING
1. Hanoi-the city of ascending dragon
“City of the Ascending Dragon” or “Thang Long” is the original name of Hanoi.
This name is so meaningful; it presents a growing Hanoi, a potential city in all
fields.
In 1010 King Ly Thai To picked the site of the Dai La Citadel, situated within
present-day Hanoi, as the capital for a country that had defeated the Tang
Dynasty less than a century before, ending a millennium of Chinese rule.
Clamming to have seen a dragon ascending the Red River, he renamed it Thang
Long.
“It is situated at the very heart of our country,” the king declared in Edict on
the Transfer of the Capital. “It is equally an excellent capital for a royal
dynasty for ten thousand generations.”
Clamming to have seen a dragon ascending the Red River, he renamed it Thang
Long. This name is so meaningful, it presents a growing Hanoi, a potential city
in all fields for thousand years.
Hanoi also has the rapid economic growth
relatively to other cities and
provinces.
2. Hanoi- City of 1000 year history
In 2010, Hanoi will be 1000 years old. The name Hanoi, in fact, means "bend in
the river" and denotes the city's strategic location along the vital waterway.
Historians liken the life-giving Red River -- its banks crowded with green rice
paddies and farms -- to the Tigris and Euphrates rivers, a cradle of civilization.
Even when the nation's capital moved to Hue under the Nguyen dynasty in 1802,
the city of Hanoi continued to flourish, especially after the French took control
in 1888 and modeled the city's architecture to their tastes, lending an important
aesthetic to the city's rich stylistic heritage, even expanding the city and adding
rail connections over the Long Bien Bridge in 1902.
In 1954, after the French departed, Hanoi was declared Vietnam's capital once
again. The city boasts more than 1,000 years of history, and that of the past few
hundred years is marvelously preserved.
3. Hanoi- city of cultural centre in Vietnam
As the capital of Vietnam for almost a thousand years, Hanoi is considered to be
the cultural centre of Vietnam, where every dynasty has left behind their
imprint.
Hanoi hosts more cultural sites than any city in Vietnam, including over 600
pagodas and temples.
The Old Quarter, near Hoan Kiem lake, has the original street layout and
architecture of old Hanoi. At the beginning of the 20th century the city consisted

of only about 36 streets, most of which are now part of the old quarter. Each
street then had merchants and households specialized in a particular trade, such
as silk traders, jewelry, etc.
The street names nowadays still reflect these specializations, although few of
them remain exclusively in their original commerce. The area is famous for its
small artisans and merchants, including many silk shops. Local cuisine
specialties as well as several clubs and bars can be found here also. A night
market (near Dong Xuan market) in the heart of the district opens for business
every Friday, Saturday, and Sunday evening with a variety of clothing,
souvenirs and food.
Many traditional handicrafts are also practiced in Hanoi including bronze
molding, silver carving, lacquer, and embroidery. Hanoi has many famous
traditional professional handicraft villages such as Bat Trang pottery village,
Ngu Xa bronze casting village, Yen Thai glossy silk...
4. Hanoi – pavement culture
It’s one of the most famous Hanoi culture. Everything here is so comfortable
and ordinary. No matter who you are, no matter what your nationality is, it must
be the best choice. If it’s the first time you come to Vietnam, maybe you’ll be
surprised when everybody includes poor people and rich people sit together and
talk together on the pavement. You have to agree with me that part of the joy of
summer though perhaps not today is that we can spend a greater part of our time
outdoors, playing, sitting, eating and drinking. And nowhere can you find this
pleasure of open air-living than in Hanoi. One of the most common habits of
people here is drinking coffee and tea on the pavement. In Vietnam, street tea
shop is very popular and you can find it everywhere. Just imagine, sitting on the
pavement with an iced lemon tea and watch people going and working!!! It must
be an excellent feeling!!! Moreover, no border here, if you want to discover

5, Hanoi-Green city
Trees and flowers are two main things that you can find easily in the streets,
roads, alleys, houses. It makes Hanoi become more attractive than ever. The
large trees forming the cityscape of Hanoi are among the first impressions with
which the city quickly wins over every foreign visitor

Thanks to the wealth and variety of green in the city, Hanoi has an advantage
over most other major Asian cities. Old and mighty trees, which often have an
even greater effect due to their impressive aerial roots, stand in the courtyards of
the pagodas, in the narrow alleys of the old town, along the boulevards built
during the colonial period, in parks and along the banks of the many inner-city
waterways. The green giants are deeply rooted in this unique urban landscape.
Their dark green colour makes a significant contribution to the special
atmosphere of the city; their mighty tops provide shade, absorb dust,
decontaminate the air and muffle the noise of the incessant streams of bicycles.
For the inhabitants the trees are a natural part of life. They are respected,
protected and looked after, often also worshiped in pagodas and temples and
sung about in countless songs
Hoan Kiem Lake in downtown Hanoi is famous not only for its Turtle Tower,
The Huc Bridge and Ngoc Son Temple but also for two old lecythidaceae and
salmania trees growing there.
The beauty of lecythidaceae flowers never ceases to amaze first visitors to the
capital city, especially when the surface of the lake and sidewalks near the tree
are covered in red petals

6, The city for Peace
A ceremony to mark the 10th anniversary of Hanoi‟s recognition as City
for Peace by UNESCO was held on Oct. 27, 2009
In 1999, Hanoi was among five cities in five continents presented with the “City
for Peace” award by the UNESCO to recognize its contributions to the struggle
for peace as well as its development that meet the organization’s standards of
equality in the community, the urban construction, living environment
protection, culture and education promotion, and care for young generations.
Cuban Ambassador to Vietnam Fredesman Turro Gonzalez who has been living
in Hanoi for more than 20 years also expressed his love to the city as his second
homeland.
“Hanoi today is making great efforts to deserve the title,” he said. “It has
become an important city in the Southeast Asia, having hosted and will host
important events during Vietnam’s integration process into the region and the
world, and contributing actively to the common struggle for peace in the world.”

The Giao Thua is the most sacred point of time, the passage from the old to the
new year. It is popularly believed that in Heaven there are twelve Highnesses in
charge of monitoring and controlling the affairs on earth, each of them taking
charge of one year. The Giao Thua is the moment of seeing off the old chieftain
upon the conclusion of his term and welcoming in the new one upon his

VI. TIPS
1. Dos
 Greetings are no different to western countries, there are no cultural
formalities that as a foreigner you would be expected to know or
practice.
 Vietnamese dress conservatively. Not only for the prevailing
weather, but also not to cause offence to the local people. Despite
the heat, it’s best not to show off too much skin. If you do,
especially girls, you’ll only draw stares from the locals. Vietnamese
have conservative dress codes, and it is only in larger cities that
these codes are a little more relaxed. Do not wear revealing
clothing.
 Dress well when visiting pagodas. No shorts or tatty beer t-shirts.
Shoes are fine, and rarely will you have to remove them. If unsure,
just follow what the locals do.
 Drink plenty of bottled water, especially when walking around
sightseeing. No need to carry huge bottles around with you, a
vendor is never far away and no doubt they will find you before
you find them. During the summer months you should be drinking
a minimum of two litters per day. If you drink tea, coffee & alcohol
you should increase you water intake accordingly as these will help
to dehydrate you.
 Only travel with trusted people. Store your cash, credit cards,
airline tickets and other valuables in a safe place. You should keep
a Vietnamese note of your accommodation address, for easier for
taxi drivers or a cyclo driver when you do not know the way back.
____________________________
AIESEC HANOI GUIDE BOOK
85
Carry a roll of toilet paper in your daypack on long excursions from
your base hotel. You never know when you might need it!
 If invited into a home, always remove your shoes at the front door
when entering.
 Ask for permission when taking a photograph of someone. If they
indicate that they do not want you to, then abide by their wishes.
 DO NOT offer money or push the issue.
 Check on your first day whether you need to reconfirm your next
flight, if so do it then. Some airlines do not require this anymore but
it is still worthwhile calling them so that they at least have your
contact details, in case the flight is delayed or whatever.
 Bring a gauze mask whenever going out for the sake of your own
health ^^
2. Don’ts
 Never carry more money than you need when walking around the
streets. Do not wear large amounts of jewellery. There are two
reasons
for
not
doing
this:
(1) It is considered impolite to flaunt wealth in public;
(2) It is more likely that you may become a victim of a pickpocket
or drive-by bag snatcher.
 Don't wear singlets, shorts, dresses or skirts, or tops with low-neck
lines and bare shoulders to Temples and Pagodas. To do this is
considered extremely rude
 Never sleep or sit with the soles of your feet pointing towards the
family altar when in someone’s house.
 Never lose your temper in public or when bargaining for a
purchase. This is considered a serious loss of face for both parties.
____________________________
AIESEC HANOI GUIDE BOOK
86
Always maintain a cool and happy demeanour and you will be
reciprocated with the same.
 Do not try to take photographs of military installations or anything
to do with the military. This can be seen as a breach of national
security.
 Wear a lot of jewellery or take a bag with you. Violent crime is
highly unusual in Vietnam, but petty crime is more apparent. If you
have a bag, or tout a digital camera around your neck, you are a
potential target.
 When taking a ride by motorbike taxi (xe om) make sure your bag,
if any, is not on display or easy to grab. Bag snatches, although still
rare, are probably the most likely crime a tourist would encounter,
and it raises the probability immensely if you are tailing a camera
or a laptop in the wind.
 Physical displays of affection between lovers in public are frowned
upon. That’s why you may come across couples holding hands but
not hugging or kissing.
 Remember, this is Vietnam, a developing country, and things don’t
quite work as you are maybe used to. Don’t be paranoid about your
safety; just be aware of your surroundings.
 Do not carry your passport a leave it in the safe in your hotel. A
photocopy will suffice if local law states that you need to.
