CORRECT MEASUREMENT ERROR DISPLAYS Year Month Date Day Sun Mon Tue Wed Thur Fri Sat Sun Mon Tue Wed Thur Fri Sat Sun Mon Tue Wed Thur Fri Sat Sun Mon Tue Wed Thur Fri Sat Sun Mon Tue Wed Thur Fri Sat Sun Mon Tue Wed Thur Fri Sat Sun The Basal Body Temperature (BBT) consists of two phases with the day of ovulation in the middle. The BBT is lower prior to ovulation and higher after ovulation. 1 or 2 days after ovulation the temperature shifts into the high range and stays there for about 2 weeks. It then drops prior to menstruation. The changes in a person’s BBT can be understood by recording the BBT over several months. Women differ from men in their sexual functions in that they are capable of “getting pregnant”, “bearing children” and “nursing children”. Due to this, women have unique hormones, the conditions of which can be checked by various external methods. Measuring the BBT is one of these methods. The Basal Body Temperature (BBT) is the temperature closest to that in the sleep state, taken immediately upon awakening, before attempting activity or influenced by psychological factors. Ideally, the BBT should be taken immediately upon waking while still lying down. Taking the BBT after eating or drinking, even while lying in bed, will result in an incorrect reading. A correct BBT cannot be taken after getting up and becoming active. Copy the Basal Body Temperature Chart on the reverse side to record your BBT. The BBT Curve The BBT curve indicates a woman’s reproductive cycle, her sexual function and health. Recording the BBT over a period of several months allows one to estimate the day of ovulation as well as the date of the start of next menstrual period in order to determine when pregnancy is most likely to occur and to use birth control measures if necessary. In addition, the information may also assist in the discovery of gynecological disorders or psychosomatic conditions. It is recommended that an obstetrician-gynecologist be consulted when there are concerns about the BBT curve or feelings of malaise occur. DETERMINING THE POSSIBILITY OF PREGNANCY When menstruation has not started by the 21st day after the day of ovulation and the temperature remains high, there is a possibility of pregnancy. Pregnancy Example Normal BBT Curve There may be individual differences in the elevation of temperatures. ˚C ˚C 37.00 High Temperature Period Low Temperature Period 36.50 Pr d rio Pe le rti In fe re G of eg na nc y Po ss ib le at es Pr t P eg os na sib nc ilit Pr y y eg na nc y Po ss ib le ua en str M Menstrual cycle Symbols WHEN PREGNANCY IS DESIRED The life of the egg released during ovulation is about 24 hours and the sperm is capable of fertilization for approximately 3 days so the period when pregnancy is most likely to occur is in the 5-day period from 3 days prior to the day of ovulation through the day after ovulation. Menstrual Cycle WHEN PREGNANCY IS TO BE AVOIDED In theory, it should be possible to avoid getting pregnant by using caution during the 5-day fertile period which includes the day of ovulation. However, there are cases in which the egg remains viable for two days or more or when the sperm maintains its viability for more than 3 days, so the time from the 4th day of the high temperature period up to the start of the next menstrual period should be considered the period of infertility. *Birth control that relies only on this may result in unwanted pregnancy. Always augment this with another form of birth control. Ovulation tio n *There are individual differences in the BBT Curve (changes in body temperature). An obstetrician-gynecologist should be consulted when there is a pattern different from that shown above. Self-diagnosis of measured results and treatment is dangerous. Be sure to follow the instructions of your doctor. If you believe you are pregnant, see your doctor immediately. PROPER MEASUREMENT Place the sensing section of the thermometer firmly against the root of the tongue and use the tongue to prevent its movement. Hold the thermometer to keep it in place and make sure that the mouth is closed during measurement.
