The weather was against us as we opened the 2015 season.
We dodged a bullet on Monday, 6/21…and the next day was
beautiful, in more ways that one! On 6/22, Norma Thompson
had a birdie on 6 (a chip in) and a par on 8!
Our golfers have such wide and varied interests…while waiting
for tee off, I was engrossed in a discussion of Italian Sculpture.
We were rained out…again…on July 7. So hoping we can play
again this season!
Have a great day!

If you haven’t attended any of our meetings or socials, or maybe
not in a long time, we invite you to come. You might meet some
old friends, and will definitely make some new ones.

done meticulous research on her subject, and will include handson artifacts and photographs of this remarkable actress.
The menu will be a summer picnic of barbecued hamburgers
and cheeseburgers, corn cobettes, three-bean salad, chips and
watermelon. This will be an afternoon performance. Doors
open at 2:00 PM, luncheon served at 2:30, and the program
begins at 4:00. Please remember that all members with walkers
and canes may enter through the side door at 1:45.
Tickets are available for $15.00 at the August 3 meeting. If you

August 25 at 4:00 in the Crafts Room. All members are welcome
to come and help plan our future activities.
This is a reminder that our membership dues are $15.00 for
the entire year. Non-members may attend two socials before
becoming members. All members who would like to attend the
annual Christmas luncheon at Cog Hill must have their dues
paid by the September 7 meeting. Please see our membership

Sorry for the lack of a column in July. I was out of town, and could not get it
done. Oh well, life isn’t perfect, is it?
The June meeting featured Elizabeth Killings of Fancy Free Travel in Naperville.
Although the one trip she spoke of happening is this month, one still remains
in the future. It’s the coach trip entitled, “Christmas at the Galt House and
Opryland Hotel.” This trip commences on November 30, and stops at Galt
House, in Louisville the first night. The other nights are spent in Nashville
at the Opryland Hotel. The cost runs between $1100 and $1500, based on
room occupancy numbers. Fancy Free’s phone number is (630)778-7010, or
(800)421-3330. Let them know you are from Carillon and you may get a bit
of a discount.

My name in Dick Nielsen and I have been teaching beginning
bridge here for the last sixteen years. I will teach a class with
the minimum of two people to a maximum of eight. So if there
are still people out there that what to learn bridge. Get a hold
of three friends or not, and give me a call to schedule a class for
you. I do teach from the Masters. I have learned from them and
have come up with my own aggressive style of bidding and playing
Bridge. Everything in my style of bidding has been reduced to
numbers. The initial lessons are for 7 weeks. The lessons can
start any time we can agree on a schedule. Once the lessons are
finished I conduct the beginning bridge practice sessions every
Wednesday afternoon. If there are no beginning lessons, I teach
an intermediate class on Monday Afternoons at 1 pm. After you
practice and build up your confidence you should be able to play
bridge with anyone. And the best thing is I haven’t raised my
prices, I’m still doing it for free and fun. Any questions, call me
at 293-3500.

Our Carillon stage is dark right now in the dog days of August,
but watch this space for exciting news about upcoming events.
And next month we will announce our new slate of officers. And
let you know what’s coming up for us.
While we are here planning, get out and support some community
theatre. It’s a terrific night out, a chance to go out to dinner,
and relatively inexpensive to boot. Many of our Theatre Guild
members act currently or have acted in other local venues. We
know the level of skill in some of those offerings.
Or perhaps an open air concert? There’s nothing like the high wire
act of live performances by people who work only for the love of
the art and the audience. Some places you can even picnic and
watch! Store up memories for the winter.

Each year the residents are extremely grateful because they made
new discoveries pertaining to their health.
Since 2009~ Kidney Foundation has confirmed 22 cases of
undiagnosed diabetes.
One marker lead to the discovery of bladder cancer diagnosed, along
with several low grade kidney infections. Since 2008 many basil cell
and a few squamous cell carcinomas. 2011 a resident had an almost
fatal melanoma skin cancer. One resident had symptoms related
to her eyes in 2003. The doctors did not diagnosis the root cause
of her vision problem. At the fair she discovered atrial fibrillation
problem which lead to a good result that day at the hospital. This
year we have had several residents participate in the stroke aware
program. We are hoping further testing may able to contribute to
the prevention of strokes. As of yet I have not received the synopsis
of the Kidney Foundation findings. However, one person who was
at the fair told me, he was stunned to find out he was diagnosed
with diabetes.
He was a person who regularly had blood work and doctor visits.
Any time we can find new information about our health we can be
proactive in taking care of ourselves.
Remember, the Carillon Health Fair website will remain active.
Please visit the website for future health and wellness information.

Words to Move You
We look forward to a world founded upon four
essential human freedoms. The first is freedom of
speech and expression everywhere in the world.
The second is freedom of every person to worship
God in his own way everywhere in the world.
The third is freedom from want, everywhere in
the world. The fourth is freedom from fear…
everywhere in the world.
Franklin D. Roosevelt
Carillon VFW Post 12059 participated in the Honor Guard for Marine
Corporal Sara Medina who was killed while on a relief mission in Nepal May
12. Her arrival at Overman-Jones Funeral Home in Plainfield on June 2 was
a sad day as hundreds of people lined Rt. 30 to pay tribute to a local hero.
Her wake and funeral mass was held the next day at St. Mary the Immaculate
Church where the VFW, American Legion and a number of other veterans
organizations paid tribute to her service.

If you are caring for someone with Alzheimer’s or a related Dementia,
you are invited to join our support group. Here in a friendly supportive
environment you can participate in discussions geared toward the
needs and interests of individuals who are caregivers, family members,
or friends of someone with dementias. It is a chance to learn more
about dementias and what to expect along the way.
We shared a UFO (un finished objects) on Saturday, June 20, 2015. A fun
time was enjoyed by all. We received a visit from our long time quilter, Rita
Brdicka. Rita moved to Rockford to be close to her family. Makes it a real
special visit when she comes to join us on our UFO day. It is our day to catch
up on visiting, sewing and eating.
Sponsored by Carillon Activities
Those with the dementia are also welcome if they are able to sit in the
discussions and benefit from the group. They do not have to enter the
discussions if they are not comfortable or able to do so.
Our support group is an opportunity to learn from and share with
others who are experiencing the same situations in their interactions
with someone with dementia. A support group helps individuals
understand that they are not alone in their situation and that others
do understand and can often offer suggestions that may help. And it is
comforting to know someone will listen and understand.
For more information please call the facilitator ARLENE ALBERT at
815-744-6770.
The All American Breakfast held on July 4th gave us the opportunity to give
two quilts to a couple of well deserved Veterans. Charlie Mueller is a world war
11 Veteran and Jim Singler is the Commander of the VFW post 12059 located
here in Carillon. They both were as heartfelt to receive them as we were to give
them. Making these quilts is one of our favorite projects to work on. We also
held a raffle for a Patriotic Quilt. This is our way of returning money to the
Carillon Activities. They give us a generous amount to purchase the batting
and fabric so we can continue to create the quilts we give to various charities.
Sounds like a win-win for all.
Our group continues to make pillow cases, pet beds for a nearby animal shelter
and quilts for a nearby shelter. Baby blankets and hats are also donated to local
hospitals.

The machines in the woodshop are busy during the morning hours by
the men in our community. They work on items for themselves, for
the craft fair and in repairs for the residents. If you have an item that
needs some TLC, please bring it to the Woodshop during the morning
hours to see if it can be repaired by the men.
This past April, the women’s woodshop group celebrated 10 years in
existence. We have made many items for ourselves and for the craft
fairs. We have a wonderful time together and are looking for more
women to join us. You don’t need any experience, just a desire to create

CHECK PAYBLE TO CARILLON WOMEN’S CLUB
It’s hard for me to get it through my head that this article is really a
month ahead. So by the time this goes to print, 4th of July will be
over, the corn will be as high as an elephant’s eye, and the kids will be
getting ready to go back to school. Hope everyone had a good 4th and
thanked God for letting us live in the greatest country in the world.
Even with all our problems, we still are the best. Speaking of the best,
Crafty Crafters has the best knitters and crocheters in the world.
Come join us on Wednesday afternoons from 12:30 to 3:00 in Club
Room 2. You can’t miss us – we are the loudest room full of laughter
and talking. And, of course, knitting and crocheting.
Wow – our ladies were really busy during the month of June. 10 lap
robes were donated to the Veterans. Project Gabriel received 8 baby
afghans and 10 baby hats. 7 lap robes went to Our Lady of Angels in
Joliet. St. Joseph Hospital in Joliet received 5 lap robes and 72 nursery
hats. Those lucky little babies. We gave 76 chemo hats to Edwards
Hospital. Unfortunately, there is always a need for chemo hats.
Thanks to Mary Lucas of Canterbury who donated tons of yarn in
memory of her friend. And a thanks to Mary Ann Gaa who donated
11 chemo hats and yarn. All donations are greatly appreciated and put
to good use.

but we don’t have to walk alone. If you are grieving the death of a

supportive and confidential environment. The group will provide
time to share stories, process emotions, learn new coping skills and

Gomez) at each end of a planting bed, so that the men will not
trim those plants. Any shrubs or trees not to be trimmed should
have a red ribbon at least 12-16 inches long attached. Acres will
not cut back any perennials.
Sharon Gomez answered many questions, but one I would like
to highlight is the care of the young trees we had planted in the
last two years. She said that they need ample watering, not just
rainwater or a mere sprinkle with the hose. She suggested giving
the base of the tree 15 gallons twice a week if it is new, and
decreasing that amount to 15 gallons once a week.
Contact Sharon Gomez at [email protected] or

Well, I hope everyone had a great and safe 4th of July. I know we
had many beautiful fireworks displayed that we could enjoyed.
I know we have been celebrating a holiday for the last 3months,
but could not remember one for August, so I checked and
here are three days which we can enjoy. August 3rd is National
Friendship Day, August 10th is Lazy Day and August 15th is
Relaxation day. Sounds like fun.
Our friends and neighbors have been doing a lot of traveling
recently. Jo Schofield went to Paris, France with her daughter
Paula and her family. They stayed in a quaint apartment by the
St. Martine Canal, used the metro and saw the Eiffel Tower, Arch
of Triumph and visited a Farmer’s Market that all the residents
use. She said they had a great time.
Larayne and John Loess toured Montana, Idaho, Wyoming and
Utah visiting the state parks with their granddaughter Tiffany
(4) and Jillian (14). Larayne said they covered 6400 miles and
the weather and scenery was beautiful.
Dave and I went to California to visit family for their birthdays.
We saw my sister and brother in Bakersfield. While in the area
we went to see the Sequoia national park. After we got into
the park we saw a black bear just walking down the side of the
road. It was amazing. Then we went to Los Angeles to see Dave’s
brother. He took us on a tour of the Holocaust Museum, Getty
Museum and Getty Villa.
Our shuffleboard and Bocce ball games have started and everyone
is having a great time playing. Be sure to come out and rout
your favorite team on.
Carol Roman would like to “Thank” our friends and neighbors
in Ashford who came out to support the Carillon Theater Guild.
She feels Jim Rossi and Sharon Postil will join her in saying how
pleased they were to see so many of you at “Done to Death”.
They really enjoyed doing the show and all the laughter they
heard from the audience. If you missed the show, it was hilarious
and the ending was very surprising.

Water heater’s life expectancy is 10-15 years and a small repair
will cost at least 10-20 or 30% of the cost of replacement.
Even if it is 8yrs old, consider a new one.
New Windows-replacing your old leakers will lower your
heating bills, but the energy savings alone will NOT justify
the high up-front costs. Seek other alternatives!
Don’t neglect your dryer vent- once a year, you should clean
lint from the inside dryer cabinet and vent duct. (Lint buildup

The weather was perfect, the hotdogs delicious (thank you to

so many choices we had to go back several times just to taste
everything. It was so nice to visit with old & new neighbors.

HAPPY BIRTHDAY AMERICA!!!!
Many lucky Carillon residents celebrated July 4th with the Honor
America Breakfast in the theater. The chorus performed an
excellent program of patriotic songs. The continental breakfast
was well received. I always come out of this event proud to be
an American. Bristol was represented in the chorus by Anita
Rubenstein, Gerri O’Brien, and Lisa Wuckish.
display the flag with the blue union field towards the top. When
a speaker is on stage the flag is displayed to the speaker’s right.
In processions, the flag should be to the right of the marchers.
When the flag is displayed on a wall it should be displayed with
the union to the upper most left of the observer.
To follow the theme of last month’s column, where I mentioned
Bristol residents who volunteer outside of our community, we
have another volunteer to report on. Jean Bogan has been a
faithful tutor at the Dominican literacy center in Aurora, IL
since 1996. She came to the center after reading an article in
her church bulletin. Feeling that it was the right time in her
life to start a new venture, she plunged right in and has tutored
at the center since 1996 teaching English as a second language.
Teaching preschool at a Montessori School for ten years and ESL
work in the Literacy Volunteers of America program, helped
prepare Jean for becoming a tutor. She has continued tutoring
all these years despite a forty minute drive to the center.
Jean encourages her students to take home a book from the
Center library to read to their children. Jean recommends the
English Yes textbook as a great teaching tool for higher level
students. Five of Jean’s students have completed three years of
study and have graduated from the program. Jean continues to
enjoy teaching at the center. She has seen her students grow in
confidence because of the nurturing atmosphere at the center.
It is a place where both students and tutors are valued and
encouraged. In Jean’s words, “I considerate it a privilege to be
part of such a worthwhile program.”
Rosemary Hauser and her sister travelled to Brussels, Belgium
to visit relatives. At the same time her daughter, husband, and
grand-daughter (Diane, Joe, and Miranda) preceded them on a
tour of London and Paris. They then met them in Belgium and
spent time with the relatives.
A Bristol welcome to Walrea and Samuez Flennoy who have
just moved in at 13655 South Redbud. We look forward to
meeting you and hope you will come to future events. You’ve
moved into a great community!
The following residents have been having health problems:
Pat Matthews, Char McCabe, Mary Lisowski, Jim Kolz, Katie
Calcin, Stan Span and Marianne Skinkis. A cheery card or call
would be appreciated.
Having a place to go is a home
Having someone to love is a family
Having both is a blessing.
Speaking of our flag, here are some interesting facts about Old
Glory. The blue field on the US flag is called “the union.” Always

Hugh and Marilyn Rhodes have recently joined the Cambridge
neighborhood … welcome.
A good time was had at the Cambridge picnic last month. It
was a gathering of old and new friends to catch up on what’s
going on in the area and an opportunity to meet our new friends
and neighbors and welcome them to our community. The food
everyone brought was delicious, (as well as Jewel’s chicken),
games were played and everyone pitched in to set-up and cleanup. Thanks to all who participated. We hope to have those same
guests and more at our October gathering.
As promised, here are more tidbits from 1990 in celebration of
Cambridge’s 25th anniversary. The Sci/Fi cable channel started
broadcasting and Twin Peaks premiered on ABC. In the field
of music, Milli Vanilli’s producer revealed that the Grammy
winning pop duo was lip synching the songs on the album which
gained them the award. Popular films included Home Alone,
Ghost, Dances with Wolves, Pretty Woman, Teenage Mutant
Ninja Turtles and The Hunt for Red October; quite a variety!
These items are from the www.thepeoplehistory.com website.
Cambridge board meeting schedules continue to be the 3rd
Tuesday of every month at 1:30 pm in the clubhouse. The
general HOA meetings are scheduled for the 1st Wednesday of

August is here. Strange month. It’s the summer we Illinoisans
wait for, especially on a raw April day, full of betrayal. But it’s
hot. And, to me, at least, it sometimes feels tired, like a season
ending in a way that, say, November, with Thanksgiving, never
does. Even the flowers look a little peaked from the onslaught of
heat and, often, dry weather. Ladies, that killer outfit, you know,
the navy and white striped blouse with white pants that you
strutted in so proudly right after Memorial Day looks vaguely
faded and wrinkled. Gentlemen, right after a carwash, your
shining chariot has, if you’re lucky, one day before a fine layer of
dust settles on its gleaming hide. You feel vaguely peevish. And
let’s not even talk about the mosquitoes! (Especially this year. As
I write this, we’ve just had the wettest June on record.)
It’s also my birthday month. As a kid, I always felt cheated.
No holidays. And my birthstone is a peridot. Now, whoever
heard of that? Other months, even bad weather ones, boast
sapphires, emeralds, rubies, diamonds, opals, a true pirate’s chest
of glittering loot. But we August folk have the lowly pale green
peridot, quiet, almost apologetic.
Still, there is a medicine to cure those summer wilts: a cold
pitcher of lemonade, clinking with ice, or if you prefer, a brew,
cold and bitter. Turn on a fan, one of the old ones that oscillates
if you have one, watch a ball game or sit in the shade with your
neighbors, telling stories, come cool evening. The cicadas’
song tells you the year’s ready to take a turn to lovely, bracing
September.
In sadness that we must tell you that John Albarran, our
neighbor and friend, has passed away. Our community will be
the poorer for the loss of this brave man who battled a long
illness. A happy memory in a sad time: we remember how he
and Shirley glided so elegantly around the Carillon dance floor.
It gave other dancers such joy. His Chelsea neighbors hold
Shirley and John’s family in their hearts at this sad time.
August 2015
Lil Wilt, Ray Healy and Marge Stachon are continuing health
challenges. Our thoughts and prayers are with you.
Janice Davies gives us a helpful safety reminder to have our dryer
vents cleaned at least every three or four years. John Delort, who
helps so many of us with home repair, offers this service for a
reasonable fee.
Hey, guys, don’t forget the monthly Men’s Breakfast at Larry’s,
9:00, August 4. Be there or—well, you know. . .
Your Faithful Correspondent has been reluctant to report family
news, but she’s going to do so this time. As you know, F.C. loves
the stage, so she’s excited that her granddaughter Helen (“Ele”)
just directed a play which she also produced. She’s going to enter
Northwestern this fall in Theatre Studies. It’s a family affair.
Now, if you Chelsea folk also have some notes about the kids
or grandkids, send them along. The able Alex or the hobbling
Helen will be happy to add them to share with your neighbors.
Consider our columns a substitute back fence to chat together
about the good news and the bad.

Rolling in the Church Isles!
The minister had delivered a sermon on hell that would make
the hair on the back of your neck stand up. Why, there wasn’t
a horror movie made that could compete with his description
of the wailing and gnashing of teeth that awaited those who
did not turn from their sins. One woman stopped to shake the
minister’s hand as she was leaving and remarked, “Reverend, I
don’t think I ever really knew what hell might be like until I
heard you preach.”
One day Alex asked his mother for a new bike. His mother said,
“At Christmas you send a letter to Santa to ask for what you
want, don’t you?” “Yes,” replied Alex, “but it isn’t Christmas.”
His mother said, “Yes, but you can send a letter to Jesus and ask
him.”
So Alex sat down with a pen and paper and started his letter:
Dear Jesus, I’ve been a good boy, and I would like a new bike.
Your Friend, Alex.
Then he thought that wasn’t quite right, and wrote a new letter:
Dear Jesus, Sometimes I’m a good boy, and I would like a new
bike.
That still wasn’t right, so he decided to write another letter: Dear
Jesus, I thought about being a good boy, and I would like a new
bike.
Then he thought he didn’t like that one either. He got depressed
and decided to take a break and go walk around. He passed by a
house with a small statue of Mary in the front yard. He picked
up the statue and hurried home. He put the statue under his
bed and started his new letter.
Dear Jesus, If you want to see your mother again, send me a new
bike! Your Friend, Alex;

And now it is already the first of August. If you are like me you
are thinking how quickly this summer is going by. There is still
time to check your summer “bucket list” but you had best get
moving on that.
rarely see anyone working on them but credit belongs to Sonny
and Barb Banick, who have volunteered their time and efforts.
And speaking of volunteers, wasn’t it nice to see all of the
individual American flags in front of our houses on July 4th.
Again they seem to just appear but a big thank you goes to John
and Barb Rabig for distrubution. This idea orginated in 2002
by Bill Crowley.
ACTIVITIES:
The Dorchester Mens Golf is “swinging” every Thursday
morning. John Rabig reports that with half of the season in the
books the following golfers are leading in AVERAGE SCORE
and POINTS EARNED. For Average Score the leaders are
Bill Grace, John Rabig, Rich Oswald, Larry Gurtowski, Art
Janowiak, Dan Barker, and Paul Osborn. For Points Earned
the leaders are Dan Barker, Art Janowiak, Paul Osborn, Rich
Oswald, and Vic Bialczyk.
PIZZA’S ARE ALMOST READY FOR THE SUMMER
PARTY ON AUGUST 7TH.
Detailed notices have been distributed.
A SPECIAL DAY:
John and Barb Rabig will be celebrating their 50th Anniversary
on August 21st. AND their three grandchildren will be starting
kindergarten in August. That makes two special memories.
Recently I inquired if we should list birthdays/anniversaries
each month like some of the other neighborhoods include in
their monthly news. Didn’t get much response so I am asking
again. Wouldn’t it be nice to acknowledge a friend/neighbors
special day. It just might make theirs!
NEW NEIGHBORS:
A big welcome to our community for Chuck and Susan Zbrozak
and Mary McLerson. Glad to have you join the Dorchester
neighborhood and wish you many years of enjoyment here.
A Tribune columnist recently wrote about remembering your
past summers and how to make the most of the current one.
Easy, unplanned lazy days turned out to be the most treasured.
Here’s hoping we can enjoy many of these this August.
News deadline for the September issue of

I am a cat lover as many of you know. I have volunteered with a cat
rescue/adoption organization for more than 20 years. What I do
not love is to see our feline friends roaming free outside. Not only
are they subjected to the fleas, ticks, mites and all other diseases in
the grass left by our wild critters, they must also dodge vehicles and
some of those critters. If you have never seen what a raccoon or
possum can do to a cat, I hope you never have to. Cats being natural
hunters will stalk the song birds that so many of our neighbors take
great joy is feeding and observing. They will also use mulch beds for
litter boxes if the need arises. This makes our neighbors angry and
sometimes they will make life miserable for the cats by leaving out
poison, moth balls, and other dangerous objects that the cats will
get into. Cats can be very happy inside with playtime and toys that
will keep their life interesting. Being outside is fun; however, once
they are introduced it is very difficult to stop them from running
out each time you decide to leave your home. Also, my cat sleeps
with me and I do not want the above listed parasites in bed with
me. If you feel they must go out, make sure you use the medicines
to protect them (including heartworm) and keep them on a leash.
Please be good pet parents and keep your feline friends inside and
pick up after your dogs. Your neighbors will respect you and your
pets will live longer and healthier lives.
