Forecaster - J A N U A RY 2 0 0 9 200 I hope all of you enjoyed the very unusually mild weather we experienced in January. Who would have ever expected Jerry Olson to go though the entire month with essentially no rain while enjoying several “Indian Summer” days with 70 degree or higher temperatures? Unfortunately, this great weather comes at a cost. The State of California is experiencing near drought conditions with rains being well below our annual average and with the Sierra snowpack at critically low levels. Unless we get caught up with higher than average rainfall during the months of February, March and April, we can expect some challenges this summer. These challenges may come in the form of higher costs for water, mandatory cutbacks, or even a reduced availability of water. Additionally, our golf courses, landscape and some trees, could suffer. Fortunately, Castlewood Country Club has access to water and our Board of Directors has been ahead of the curve with its work on our detailed “Water Strategy Plan” that was presented at the November Member’s meeting. We have several contingency plans that we are ready to implement if needed, but let’s all do our “rain dance.” I was very impressed with the turn-out of Members at our Annual Meeting held on January 17th. As presented, 2009 looks to be a great year for Castlewood Country Club but in order to be truly successful, we need your help. Use your Club and be a positive contributor. Don’t forget; you’re not a Member - you’re an owner. P resident’s Report The Board of Directors for 2009, the General Manager/COO and his staff spent two days discussing goals, objectives, the Club’s mission and vision, and the differences among the group relative to personality and styles. It was one of those meetings that you go into wondering why you are attending and come out wondering why you hadn’t had such a meeting earlier. As a result, we will be tweaking our vision and mission Jim Clouser statements as well as publishing the values we feel best define our Club. As Board members, we obtained a better insight into each other and a better insight into Jerry Olson and the management team. Hopefully by the time you read this, you will have already attended our Annual Meeting on January 17, 2009 and received more information about these concepts. At one demographic cross section, we have Members who are the only golfer in their family, other Members whose spouses are active players, and still other Members whose entire family plays golf. Similarly, we have Members who are less sensitive to the cost of services and Members who are more sensitive to cost. We have approximately 50% of the Members who live within 10 miles of the Club and 50% of the Members who live outside of 10 miles. We also have some Members who highly value the non-golf services and others who do not. But the simple truth is this - in order to survive economically, we must appeal to all demographic groups as there are insufficient numbers of any single demographic to support the Club. Equally important, we must continue to attract new members from all demographics to continue to be a viable entity – especially in these economically troubled times. As Board members, we strive to overcome our own biases based on our personal demographic to do what is right for the organization – to seek balance. However, the concepts of integrity, quality, operational efficiency, innovation, fiscal responsibility, courtesy, friendliness and respect transcend all demographic segments and will continue to be a focal point of management with reinforcement from the Board. We, as a club, have made improvements; but we still have more to do. With our new General Manager/Chief Operating Officer and a revitalized management team, most, if not all, of the day-to-day operational issues and execution will be left to them. The Board will focus on longer-term policies and strategic actions with an emphasis on Member satisfaction and value. We thank Members for their continued support and hope that everyone has a prosperous and enjoyable 2009. Castlewood provides the country club experience – Play, Enjoy, Relax, Return. Our vision remains unchanged – to be the country club in the East Bay with the highest Member satisfaction with a waiting list of people wanting to join us! Thanks to all of you who have made me feel welcome from the first day I stepped onto the golf courses as your new Golf Course Superintendent. Often the biggest challenge for a new Superintendent is conveying the differences in philosophies between the current and past methods of growing turf - not just to Members - but to the maintenance staff as well. Change can be a positive thing because it can bring about a rejuvenation of focus. Comstock Grill Food Service Lou Silveira Golf Superintendent Although I bring a different approach to the operation of the golf course maintenance department, my goal is much the same; to provide you with the best possible playing conditions at Castlewood. My first goal has been to implement a soil remediation program on our greens in order to increase the root length and density. A more extensive root system will allow us to better withstand future environmental challenges, aggressive mowing practices and stress factors that come with high traffic across the greens. The ability of the turf to repair itself (i.e. ball marks) and endure the long golfing season is essential to the success of our green speeds and ball-roll consistency. Until next month…happy golfing! Forecaster - J A N U A RY 2 0 0 9 200 Golf News Rules of Golf Last Month’s Question: After playing his ball out of a greenside bunker, the player smooths his footprints. He then discovers that his ball is in another bunker on the other side of the green. He plays out of the second bunker and the ball comes to rest in the smoothed area of the first bunker. What is the ruling? Answer: No penalty was incurred. The player did not smooth his footprints in the first bunker while his ball still lay in that bunker (Exception 2 to Rule 13-4). If the player had failed to extricate his ball from the first bunker with his first stroke and had smoothed his footprints while his ball still lay in that bunker, he would have incurred a penalty if his smoothing had breached Rule 13-2 (Improving Lie…) with respect to his next stroke. This Month’s Question: Prior to a singles match between A and B, A stated to B that a third player, C, would be playing with them. B played the match under protest and lost. What should be the ruling? Rake Positioning Late last year, we placed bunker rakes outside the bunkers for a trial period. It’s widely known that the USGA recommends that rakes be placed outside bunkers. During our 3-month trial, we received overwhelmJohn Hughes Director of Golf ingly positive feedback from the Membership. So, going forward, we will continue placing the rakes outside the bunkers on a permanent basis. Thanks to those Members who submitted their comments. Go to the Website More and more information about our Club’s activities is being placed on the Club’s website at www.castlewoodcc.org. I recommend that all Members make it a habit of referring to the website for all club-related information. Although the Club sends Members a yearly calendar, monthly newsletter, billings and other materials, the website is the best place to go in order to stay informed. In many cases, printed material becomes out-of-date as changes happen. The website can reflect up-to-the minute information that is more accurate. So, log on and look at the Club’s website regularly. GUEST PLAY POLICIES Non-Daylight Savings Time February 2009 The definition of a Member is the name that appears on the membership certificate. During the months of non-daylight savings time, the amount of activity on both courses is greatly reduced with a reduction of Member and outside activities. The following policies will be in effect through March 2009. This includes both the Hill and Valley courses. Monday - Friday: A Member may have three guests at any time. Saturday: A Member may have one guest at any time and more than one guest after 10:00 a.m. Sunday: A Member may have one guest at any time and more than one guest after 10:00 a.m. Holidays: A Member may have one guest at any time and more than one guest after 10:00 a.m. Reminder: Sunday tee times may be made the preceding Wednesday at 10:00 a.m. at 485-2250. This year I have decided Captain Kay King to also follow the sage advice of Harvey Penick who said, “Go out and have fun. Golf is a game for everyone, not just the talented few.” So I hope all you ladies will join me in making your number one goal this year to be “go out and have fun!” We have a very talented and enthusiastic group serving on the Board, Committees and Chairing the Tournaments. From the competitive and challenging Tuesday games, to the Ladies Invitational creatively themed, “Wild, Wild West”, it will be virtually impossible not to have fun this year. As a Board, we have several goals for the year. Growing the membership is key and we are off to a great start with 5 new members in January alone. We continue to look for ways to encourage and allow more members to participate in playdays and tournaments. For example, Eclectic now requires only one 18-Holer signature. Additionally, President’s Cup is now over a 7-week period allowing members to schedule their matches on a day that is conducive to both players and not necessarily on a Tuesday. It’s a pleasure to serve on the Board and I know I speak for all the Board when I say: we are here to represent and serve all our members. We like hearing from you, so please keep your comments and suggestions coming. All we ask is that you go out and have fun! In 2008 we collected $100 for Hope Hospice of the East Bay. Let’s top that in 2009! Playtime Congratulations Most Improved Castlette Min Kwak You may have seen Min on the course. She is out there when her three kids (15-year-old Kristine, 10-yearold Katie and 8year-old Kevin) are in school and she has a free moment. Min is honored to Min Kwak be named the Most Improved Castlette. She practices a lot and does her best on every swing. She believes it is important to practice right and not do the wrong things. She is constantly learning about the right things from her friends, books, magazines and TV. Her husband, Young, is an avid golfer as well and sometimes gives her advice, which she also finds helpful. All of this advice sounds like it is working for her. Min tells us she likes golf because “it depends on her.” She says that most sports depend on the opponents or judges but golf totally depends on her swing, her stance, her ability and thinking, and that’s what keeps bringing her back. Forecaster - J A N U A RY 2 0 0 9 200 Min plays golf because it gives her many things; something for her own life, not for her kids or her husband, and something that she can improve by practicing. She plans to continue playing golf because she can enjoy it as she gets older. Her sister (who lives in Korea) is also good at the game and she hopes to play with her someday. Min’s handicap in January 2008 was 17, and for December 2008, it came down to 9. Keep up the good work! We will continue to watch your progress on the course. All I could recall was that he saw some talent in me and decided to take me to golf camps even though I wasn’t interested. Then later, my family inspired me to become a better golfer and that gave me the motivation to work hard to become a better golfer. 8) What golf tournament or match, was one that you were most proud of and why? One was the NCGA Junior Championship at Lake Merced where I shot a total score of 4 under par and in the 60’s for the first time. The second is the JGANC Championship match play tournament because not only is it fun but every other year since I was 9 yrs old, I faced Patrick Grimes in the finals (exception for 2008). 9) To what do you attribute your success? My parents for sacrificing their time to take me to practices and tournaments. Without them, I wouldn’t be where I am now. My brother also contributed by giving his support and looking out for me. He taught me many things in life that helped shape my mental game in golf. Also all of my golf coaches. 10) What are your goals and aspirations in the future, golf or otherwise? Right now my main goal for golf would be to play in Division I college golf. I would also like to take my art skills and creativity to designing clothes, any concept, or to work on something really “big.” Until then, I believe college will help me see a clear path to where I need to be heading. 11) If you could choose a dream foursome, including yourself…what 3 golfers would make up your foursome? Tiger Woods, Michael Jordan and Will Ferrell. Scott Schaffer On Your Mark, Get Set... It’s time to get ready for another great season of swimming with Castlewood’s Swim Team... The Barracudas! The recognition came at the USTA Heroes’ Awards Banquet honoring sections, volunteers and players for their outstanding service to the game of tennis in 2008. Dean’s fellow teammates thought so highly of his leadership, organizational skills, and his ability to inspire team camaraderie, that they submitted his name with a very positive recommendation. Teammate Tad Adams says about Dean, “His mission statement for Castlewood Tennis should be, ‘You don’t need to go 12-0, if you have fun drinking with your friends after.’” Sandy Benson Coach Andy’s Corner “The Easy Ball” I’d like to see Castlewood tennis players work on staying mentally balanced when ending the slow ball as the last shot.
