NEWSLETTER
Last year in August we all met at Carsington Water Visitor Centre, Derbyshire. for a mass
Rough Collie meeting and picnic. Everyone bought food to share around. We had a brilliant day
and 23 Rough Collies attended, plus 2 Pugs,1 Spaniel,1 Pomeranian and a Sheltie!!! We are now
planning another picnic on Sunday 5th June 2016. Everyone is welcome to join us provided you bring your Rough Collie along with you! Any sibling non Rough Collies are welcome, but
the main aim is to get as many Rough Collies there as possible. The postcode is DE6 1ST
and we will be meeting around 12pm till dusk. Over 50 Rough Collies are planning on attending already! It does not matter what walk of life your Collie is from i.e. rescue, pet or show dog, as
long as you are prepared to be responsible for your dog and its behaviour on the day, you will be
made very welcome. Details on food will be announced on Facebook nearer the time, but if anyone does not use Facebook then they can email me after 01/05/16
on [email protected]. Last year we organised food to share round everyone.
There are refreshment kiosks where you can buy tea, coffee, ice cream, snacks etc but the main
aim is for everyone to share the day, their love for their dogs and the food offered! ( I seem to recall wine and beer put in an appearance last year!). We might even be able to organise another
Dog Show, which is strictly for fun, with classes you will not find at Crufts!!!
Tinky, Asha and Poppy are really looking forward to meeting old and new friends.
There will also be a collection box if anyone wishes to donate to Rescue.

NEWS FROM THE CONTROL CENTRE
Since our October newsletter we have been very busy in Rescue, with
MORE “COLLIE CHAOS”

a Christmas Stall and tombola, then three weeks before Christmas we
were asked to re-home eleven Rough Collies from a breeder who had
sadly passed away. A mammoth task of transporting them to an obliging boarding kennels in the West Midlands who, although busy for the
Christmas period, turned over a whole kennel block to us so we were
able to keep the dogs together whilst suitable homes could be found.
All dogs have now been re-homed and some of the new owners have
sent their doggy stories for this edition. I hope you enjoy reading about
them. All the dogs have wonderful temperaments and are happily settled in their new homes.
We also managed to set up a Virgin Giving button on our website for
anyone wanting to fundraise or donate.
At the moment we are getting our stand ready for Crufts on the
12th March, so there will be new stock for sale on our website after this
event.
Hope you all have a good summer with lots of warm sunny weather to
enjoy with your dogs, especially Collie Chaos at Carsington, may the
sun shine on you all.

OH ! ... WHAT A CHRISTMAS
THREE WEEKS BEFORE CHRISTMAS, SAM HALE, OUR WEST
MIDLANDS REPRESENTATIVE RECEIVED A TELEPHONE CALL INFORMING HER THAT A LOCAL
BREEDER HAD DIED SUDDENLY AND THERE WERE ELEVEN ROUGH COLLIES WHO NEEDED TO BE REHOMED IMMEDIATELY, AS THERE WAS NO-ONE TO LOOK AFTER THEM IN THEIR KENNELS. Once the panic
had subsided and Sam’s organisational skills took over, she arranged for all eleven to go into boarding kennels locally and with
the help of friends and family they were all moved within a day. They were all kept together in a separate kennel block where it
was decided to keep them until the New Year, (unless we had any enquiries about re-homing), so that staff could assess and
health check them and the dogs would have time to settle in to their new surroundings. Work then started on finding homes for
them all ....
BUT ... NEW YEAR JOY
All dogs proved to be in good health, had lovely temperaments and with ages ranging from very young to
middle aged, re-homing was not going to be a problem. In fact, within two months all eleven dogs were permanently re-homed in
their new adoptive placements. Here are some of their stories and pictures .... ENJOY ...

Back in July of 2015, we suddenly lost our 5 year old tricolour Penny, with suspected liver disease and that meant that for the first time in over 30 years we
were without a Rough Collie. We still had our Smooth and our Shelties, but it
wasn’t the same. We did try looking for a puppy, but we suffered several disappointments so asked Rescue to look out for a bitch for us. Eventually we got a
message from Sam to say that several had become available … would we like
to go and have a look? Would we?!! The first chance we got we went up to the
kennels where they were being held. It was a bit noisy, there were all these
lovely collies barking frantically … I guess they all really wanted to come out, but
only one, a merle, had her head through the bars! It was obvious to me that she
was going to have to come home with us although, like most of the others, she
almost resembled a sheep – they were all dropping their coats big time. I can
honestly say that in all our years of owning collies I have never seen a moult like
it; my new G-tech couldn’t cope and my old Dyson took one look at all the hair and blew up! Still all that grooming was the ideal
way to start to bond with TARA (she had been called Sky, but we already had a Sheltie by that name) but she was very shut
down for some weeks. She chose to show a little of her personality on Christmas Day by bouncing around and playing with a toy
for the first time. She did house train very quickly but going in the car is still a work in progress – as much as she loves her walks
and travels well, she just doesn’t want to get in the car. It will come. She has a few other problems but nothing that can’t be
worked on over time. She is a very sweet little girl and I’m sure we’ll discover even more of her personality as time goes on. Sincere thanks once again to Rescue for all the work they do and for letting Tara join the clan!

In late 2015, sadly our old Rough Collie, Breeze passed away aged almost 15
years. His brother Brando had passed away 2 years previously. We said, ‘
Never again, we don’t want to go through that again’ ... but the house was just
that ... a house … because without a dog it wasn’t a home.
So we contacted Chris at Collie Rescue to show interest and maybe a dog
might become available in the spring. To our surprise there were quite a few
that needed re-homing in the Midlands.
Once the vetting process was completed we were contacted by Sam from Sutton Coldfield and we arranged to go and see the dogs the following day. We
were already very excited by what Sam had told us on the phone about two
dogs that had always been together and would like to be re-homed together.
As we had always had two dogs this was of great interest.
So just
before Christmas off to Sutton Coldfield we went and as soon as we saw the
dogs it was love at first sight. So of course we came home with two. A three
and a half year old tri colour called CEASAR and a two and a half year old
sable called LUCKY. What an apt name … we are so lucky to be able to adopt them. They travelled beautifully in the car on
the two hour journey back home and they have settled in wonderfully. They are absolutely delightful dogs with a lovely temperament but completely different in a lot of ways. Caesar seems to be quite a serious thoughtful dog whereas Lucky is more gregarious. When they go for walks on the moors close to home, Caesar comes back in pristine condition as if he’s been to a doggy
grooming parlour.

He hates walking through any water or mud which in itself is difficult bearing in mind the amount
of rain we have had this winter. He will walk yards out of his way just to avoid it.
Lucky on the other hand comes back as if he should go straight to a dog grooming parlour……
just covered in mud. It’s a joy to watch them running on the moors and in the garden having fun.
They have brought so much pleasure into our lives and we look forward to spending many happy
years with them.

Hello everyone, My name is MONTY. I am a blue merle Rough
Collie. I have been in a kennel for 8 and half years. When my owner
died I was re-homed by Collie Rescue to a couple called Brian and
Joyce. I was underweight but after only 3 weeks I am getting to my
target weight.
They really spoil me - I live in their house, go for lots of lovely walks
every day, play in their large garden, have regular meals, checks at the
vets and most importantly have loads and loads of love. At night I
climb the stairs and jump on the bed !
I am so happy in my new home and Brian and Joyce love me being
here too.
After a walk in the morning I lie in front of the fire in the afternoon and have a sleep.

We are Joyce and Brian and we cannot thank Sam and Collie Rescue enough for allowing us to
have Monty. We will always be in their debt. Monty is such a loving and affectionate dog. We love spoiling him and giving him a
nice home with lots of love and treats. When the weather gets a bit better we are going to take him on the train and go to the seaside - we're sure he will love it. Thank you once again Sam (and Glen). You do such good work with Collie Rescue and turning a
lot of sad cases into happy ones.

Hello, my name is TOBY and I would like to tell you the story of how I
found my new family with the help of Collie Rescue.
My owner had died suddenly leaving me all alone in the house, I didn't
know what to do. The Police had to knock the door down to rescue me.
They took me to the kennels, who then contacted Collie Rescue. I was
very scared, but luckily Collie Rescue were able to find me a family rather
quickly. At first I was very frightened in my new home and finally found a
safe place upstairs to hide away and sleep. But, with some encouragement, I began to come downstairs and sit with everyone. My new home is
a lot busier than my old one and it took a bit of getting used to. My family
spent lots of time with me, taking me for lots of lovely walks and introduced me to some Collie friends,. The kind little boy even gave me his
teddy to cuddle. I'm now settled in my new home and love to spend time
with all my family.

CASSIE
came into our lives on Monday 28th December 2015.
We were on our way to Harrogate for New Year, after having our last
Rough Collie put to sleep a week before Christmas. Having had
Rough Collies for 37 years, we wanted another, but did not have the
time to train a puppy due to work. We had considered finding a rescue before, but had been put off by the problems we had seen.
On checking the local dog rescue charities, there were no rough
collies available. Then we tried Collie Rescue. They had 11 to re-home! On that Monday morning we
met 5 Rough Collies who all needed a new home. The noise was amazing with all of them barking in
their kennels. All wanted to say hello, and we could easily have taken all 5 with us.
After a week of deliberation, we returned on the 2nd January and left with Cassie.
Over the past month, she has blossomed, and is now part of the family. She needs some dental work on her front teeth, which
we knew about when taking her home, but otherwise is a perfectly fit and healthy companion. She follows us around the whole
time, and is a loving and lovely collie. We are having a wonderful time with Cassie, and hope that all the others who have taken
on the other 10 collies are enjoying their dogs as much as we are.
A big thank you to Sam and Cassie for making our New Year so great.

BONNIE-PRINCE ... See his latest story on Page 7
Charlie is very well at the moment.
Kara is doing very well considering
her age and the fact she has a longterm kidney problem. She still enjoys
going out for walks, although on her
terms, and sometimes struggles with
her appetite, insisting she wants to
be hand fed sitting on her dad’s lap or
she is not going to eat, but other days
she tucks in straight away. Her favourite pastime is cuddling on the sofa
with her dad.
However last October he was quite
poorly with a bad bout of diahorrea. It
finally cleared up after antibiotic treatment plus invalid diet for a couple of
weeks, but he did have an overnight
stay at the vets, because at one point
he became dehydrated. Apart from that
he had a really good year, with one
particlar highlight when he was taken
out for the day on the Cromford canal
walk in Derbyshire, where his taste for
vanilla ice cream was discovered!!
Not a lot to say about Tia for this update as there has not been much
happening to her, but the main thing is
that she is very well and happy, and
her foster 'Mum' Julie tells us that Tia
and her sister, Shadey, continue to be a
delight to own. They are both now
reaching their twilight years, we guess
they must be approaching 12 years old.
For their Spring 'wash and groom',
Julie has suggested that they go a bit
shorter and have a good thinning out,
as Tia, in particular, has an extremely
profuse coat, as you can see in the
photo of her in their garden.
Skoda is very settled with us
now after being here almost 10
months. He has changed from
being an unsure boy to one who
knows exactly his place in the family.

We have recently lost Jude, aged 15,

another for her. But how wrong I was. She was sent on her journey over the Rainbow
Bridge by the vet in the Motor-home, a place she loved and had travelled in to so many
happy and joyful places. Skoda and Steve left the vet and myself alone with Jude to send

her on her way. This happened very calmly in my arms and in a second she was gone.
Time to compose ourselves and travel back home. Skoda did not want to return back into
the van .... It took a bit of persuasion to get him back in.

The morning after, Skoda, a normally greedy boy, did not want to eat his breakfast, only when I pretended to eat it did he consume it all.
From being a three dog family, we are now down to just one, but thank goodness we have Skoda who wags his tail and shows in
his face his joy in life. Now he is showing his sensitive side x
As a tribute to the girls can I just say we welcomed both Jude and Dusty into our lives at a time we
were sad, they too were sad and needed a home. They were 10
years old and I am sure they had never had any bad experiences
but had lost the stability and security they had always known. They
were just so easy to love and a joy to be around. Collie Rescue
have been brilliant covering their needs from the vets. If they had
not done this I would have been unsure taking an older dog on so
thank you Rescue and all those who have and do fundraise ... the
girls would have been lost without all your support.
It’s me Lassie-Grace - after a busy summer, so much news and I am so
very excited to tell you all what has being going on in the Perry family
after lovely summer days spent on the beach . On Saturday 31st October
we all went to Carsington Water in Derbyshire to meet up with lots of
friends. This was my third time at Carsington ... I was very happy it was so much fun meeting everyone. We had
games of football and lots of fun was had by everyone, but time went by so fast and it was time to set off home.

LASSIE-GRACE HAS A
NEW BOYFRIEND
A new family member. Sunday 1st November 2015 we had a phone call from Collie Rescue asking us if we
would be able to foster a six month old Rough Collie. He had been living outside in a cage and he needed help.
Well we had always said anything we could do to help. That afternoon we went on our way, not
knowing what to expect. After about forty five minutes we arrived. We knocked the door, (we hadn’t told Brad
and Lillie what we were doing). A Rough collie came running to the door ... oh my what a gorgeous face ...
he looked a little on the thin side and his coat did not look the best. He was tall for a six month old. His name
was Max. He jumped up me ... he was happy to see us. (As I write this it brings tears to my eyes.) Within
minutes he was in the car. I sat in the back with Lillie and Max. Before we got home, Bradley had given him a
new name ... Louie. When we got home I stayed outside on the front lawn with Louie. Nick opened the front
door and Lassie-Grace came out ... she looked at Louie who was scared and barked as if to say ... “who is
that, what’s he doing here” . Once we were all inside Lassie kept barking. I was worried, but she eventually
calmed down. If you were our neighbours you would have put your house up for sale !! Over the weeks Lassie-Grace and Louie became good friends and it’s so lovely to see their friendship growing. Louie is gaining weight and his coat is
now beautiful. He is enjoying his life and we wouldn’t be without him. He is now the sixth member of our family. So yes we are
failed fosterers as Louie is going nowhere.

THE TERRIBLE TRIO FROM DERBYSHIRE
Hi Everyone, Tinky
up over winter.
Tyler here. Well so much for me putting my feet
My new sister, Asha arrived last March and we had to get used to living
together. Asha is nothing like me, she is a Lady, who hates getting wet or
dirty. I try to tell her that swimming in muddy rivers is good fun but no, she
TINKY won’t believe me. She throws a fit if she gets her feet muddy!
Then guess what happened? In September we went for a ride in the car
and we had no idea where we were going. When the car stopped Mum lifted me out the car to be
greeted by a puppy! We spent an hour playing on the lawn, but then Mum said it was time to go
home. I was very disappointed because this tiny puppy was great fun. Mum lifted me back in the
car and we went home.

MEET “STORM” ... A RESCUED COLLIE FROM NOTTINGHAMSHIRE
Storm came into rescue through no
fault of his own when his previous
owners fell onto hard times and
could not afford to keep him.
Here is permanent foster collie, Storm, with
his two Labrador “girlfriends”, Abbi and Pru.
They are all lined up patiently waiting for their
piece of apple ... this is one of their regular
treats. Very well behaved for a collie who,
before coming into Rescue had not really had
to share anything.

“IT’S A DOG’S LIFE” - STORIES FROM BONNIE-PRINCE AND HIS SISTER AILEE
MY DAD – MY BESTEST FRIEND – by Bonnie-Prince. 7th January 2016
Dad had been having dreadful pains in his right leg when he lay down, from his hip to his ankle.
I knew there was something wrong with him, as he kept getting up in the night and making himself a drink of tea and
came to sit and talk with me when I was in bed ... he also brought me a gravy bone, he ‘always puts me to bed in my
‘den’ in the sitting room (my mum checks up on me too, to say ‘night-night’). I am usually so tired and never move
from my bed until mum wakes me up the next morning.
You see I have my freedom here in the garden and in the house, so I play and play outside all day and every day,
unless it is raining – and then I don’t go out – because I don’t like the rain ..... sometimes when I need a rest, I
just lean against the entryway door, looking down the garden to see if ‘there is anything poaching on my garden that
shouldn’t be there ..
Some people may say “why did you give this unwanted dog a home?” and “what does a blind dog know about how
people feel, especially when he was due to be destroyed? – but this is MY family now – they took me on and looked
after me, and cared for me as well, I feel very safe with them even though I don’t know a lot about them, but I do
know who my BESTEST friend is – and that’s my dad. He takes me little walks and plays football with me, lays on
the floor with me and is always ‘there’ when I need someone .. he always has ‘time for me’.
So after about 3 nights of him getting up and coming to sit with me with his drink of tea and tablets, I decided that I
would go and sleep by him in the bedroom, (to save him getting up to see me in the night) – I laid on the carpet at
the side of the bed where he sleeps, so I could hear him breathing and I knew he was okay. I stayed there all night
looking after him, to be with him when he got up, but he didn’t get up. I am sure he knew I was laid guarding over
him.
I never thought I would find love, tranquillity and peace again, as I must have done in a former home a few years
ago, surely I must have been happy then.
There have been a lot of ‘special people’ in my life since Collie Rescue ‘saved me’ ... but I remember two really special people – there was one kind lady in Ireland who looked after me while everything was sorted to come to my
‘special and final home’ in England and the other person is the wonderful lady who knew my ‘new family’ before I
came to stay with them, and organised me to stay with them forever, in my own garden where no one will ever hurt
me again.

“IT’S A DOG’S LIFE” - STORIES FROM BONNIE-PRINCE AND HIS SISTER AILEE
Hello everyone, it’s Ailee here, and I am the adopted sister of Bonnie Prince. I will be15 years old on the 9th
March, but, even though I am a Rough Collie, I am not
from Collie Rescue, so I do hope it will be alright if I tell
you my story – I was brought home as a companion and
sister for Jasper the Sailor Boy.
My mum and dad gave me a home on the 25th November,
2006, when they had Jasper the Sailor Boy. I was only 3
years old and they saw me advertised in a local paper and wanted me as a companion for Jasper, (my original family had two
young children under 4 years of age and my “mum” was having another baby and they could not cope with me as well.) Jasper
came with them to meet me and when they saw me they all fell in love with me and took me home with them. I remember my
new mum nursed and cuddled me all the way to my new home. I have loved my life here so much with my “mum and dad” and
quickly settled down with them and Jasper. I have played, chased and had a great time in this wonderful garden that I now share
with my lovely bro - Bonnie-Prince.
I could not believe it - on the morning of the 18th May 2013, when they came back with Bonnie
Prince, when he walked in, he came up to me and gave me a kiss, so I thought “Gosh!! He is nice, I
have a new friend to play with now,” we played and chased around the garden together, it has been
like “Sunshine all the year round for me”, we love each other very much.
Unfortunately I am getting very old now, and can no longer chase, but I still love my garden. Bonnie
Prince is my Guardian Angel when I am outside, and looks after me ... I am a bit naughty though,
because if he isn’t looking and he has left a bit of his food – I pinch it!!
I have always worked hard and helped my dad outside mending his car, helped him to make his
trailer, I have always been there to help him with his tea and biscuits when mum has brought them
out for him, but now it is too far for me to walk into the orchard where I would run and chase with the
wind blowing through my fur, but I do love to see Bonnie Prince doing all the things I used to do.
I was never allowed on the furniture, but Bonnie Prince tells me he loves being there with our dad,
because he feels safe on the settee with him, he snuggles up to dad for him to cuddle him, but I am
not jealous, as dad has always cuddled me a lot, I have shared his rug when he has been working
underneath his car.
I sleep with mum and dad in their bedroom, but Bonnie Prince prefers his ‘Den’ ... I think it is because he has the full range of cushions to pinch and play with at
night, with no one to stop him – I may be wrong, but I can hear him bashing them into the floor
and jumping on them – I wouldn’t tell mum though, but I am sure she knows what he
does. Bonnie-Prince always comes in their bedroom in a morning to see me and give me a kiss,
then we both have a gravy bone together......but he does love his Den – this is something of his
own, and I am sure he feels ‘very safe’ there..
I have been with my mum and dad now for almost 10 years, and have had some lovely adventures with them, but I am quite contented now to sit in the garden and watch Bonnie-Prince playing and doing all the lovely things that I used to do when I was younger.
THE TERRIBLE TRIO FROM DERBYSHIRE ..... CONT’D ...
When we arrived home I was absolutely overjoyed to discover that Poppy the puppy was coming
to live with us! I love Asha to bits, but she isn't really a playful dog although she will chase me when
we go on nice long walks. Well, it was obviously my job to teach Poppy a thing or too! I taught her
how to dig muddy holes in the garden, paddle in muddy puddles and also how to chase the cat up
the trees in the garden! In October we all went to Carsington to meet Skoda, Jude, Bonnie-Prince,
Lassie and several other Rough Collies. I love going to Carsington and I know exactly where
Buddy’s memorial Tree and Plaque are. We always go to check the tree is ok, I can’t believe it is
now a year since my best mate left me, sad and alone and I will never forget him. We all went to see
Bonnie-Prince at his home in Chesterfield and spent a lovely day chasing each other round the garden. Bonnie-Prince greeted us by sticking his head through the cat flap! In January it was Mum's
birthday and she organised a lovely walk, again, at Carsington. 14
Rough Collies and their owners appeared and we all went for a lovely walk together. Everyone
was amazed to see so many beautiful Rough Collies together. After our walk we all went to the
café for coffee, biscuits and cake. I have been here 2 years on Valentines Day and every day I am
grateful that I found such a loving home. I love meeting all my furry friends and having fun. I suspect that Poppy thinks that when she has grown up she will be the boss round here: Well, I will
just have to show her different, wont I?
