Tech21 is the cool British company with a passion for protecting mobile
devices. At its base on Eel Pie Island in the River Thames, a place famous
for its musical history and where the Rolling Stones used to play gigs at
the legendary Eel Pie Hotel in the ‘60s, this small business is thinking
big, taking nano technology and giving it an innovative
twist to create the ultimate in tough cases for smartphones,
tablets, and laptops.

Behind every great company is a great idea, and Tech21’s
cunning plan was to play with an exciting material called
D3O® then use it to turn bulky and often ineffective protect
cases for mobile devices into slim, tough, clever designs tha
actually work.
D3O® is a unique patented shock absorbing material that is
every Tech21 case, and is the clever goo that absorbs blow
and spreads the subsequent shock waves across the surfac
the D3O®, so protecting the point of impact.
Giles Tongue, marketing manager at Tech21, explains in
layman’s terms what is so smart about D3O®: “D3O® feels
like putty when you handle it, but it’s actually a liquid, as the
molecules are always moving. On force or impact, the mole
lock together at the point where the object has been hit, so
protecting it.”
Tech21 was founded back in 2005 by entrepreneurial CEO,
Jason Roberts. Starting with Laptop Impact Protection Syst
(L.I.P.S), Roberts began his quest to find the best way to pro
the technological devices that people carry with them on a
daily basis.
Roberts comments that his discovery of D30 in 2004 was th
catalyst that pushed his business to the successful heights
has achieved today. He explains: “D3O® initially inspired me
offer a slimmer, minimal impact protection solution for laptop
protection, as the existing solution, which is virtually identica
today, offered no protection, but added weight and bulk.
“Then when the first iPhone was rumoured, I wanted a minim

Android
Linux-based, open operating system Android took the market by
storm on its arrival to planet earth. The cute little green robot has
gone through numerous candy-coated incarnations, the most
recent of which, Android 4.2, is the newest version of the Jelly
Bean operating system. Android 4.2 takes the speed and simplicity
of Jelly Bean to a different level, providing a completely new
camera experience, refined tablet usage, a new form of typing,
and much more, including wireless display from your Android
device to any HDMI-enabled TV, and more reactive and uniform
touch responses. The upside to Android as an open operating
system backed by Google works brilliantly for developers and end
users, so this is a booming and healthy ecosystem with dedicated
Android followers. The only downside is that some device
manufacturers have in the past overly customised ‘open’ Android,
so reversing accessibility for developers; however, this is less of a
problem now due to the general high spec of the OS.
iOS
While other OS developers were making platforms they thought served
the market, Apple swept in and unveiled its game changing iOS that
then led to the creation of the smartphone and then the tablet market.
Today we are looking at Apple iOS 6, which encompasses built-in
apps plus over 800,000 more apps and games available on the App
Store. It enables users to make FaceTime calls, to edit videos with
iMovie, and to chat to Siri, who behaves like your voice-activated
personal organiser. However, iOS 6 ran into trouble at its launch for
its failed Maps App, which for some reason could not send people in
the right direction. Also, while still innovative, iOS is now one of many
operating systems in the field, and is no longer a clear leader. Yet
another downside to iOS is once you are in, you are in; this proprietary
ecosystem is all about having the Apple mobile, tablet and desktop.
The plus point here is if you love Apple’s iOS, you won’t care.

Over recent years the plethora of operating systems (OSs) available in the
mobile market has reduced in number while strengthened in power and
marketshare, as OSs have gained dedicated armies of followers who are
attracted to the OS, rather than the manufacturer. Here is iData’s pick of the
sexiest operating systems on the market today.
BlackBerry 10
After a very long wait, the mobile world has finally taken
delivery of BlackBerry’s new OS, BlackBerry 10, which
replaces 7.1 and provides a refreshed experience for
dedicated business and BBM users across the globe. The
new OS contains a heap of exciting features, from a gesturebased interface that is highly discoverable thanks to the ever
present BlackBerry Hub, a single place to manage all your
conversations, BBM messages, and social media updates,
to BlackBerry Flow, where features and apps run together.
It also has a keyboard that adapts to you, and BlackBerry
Balance separates and secures work applications and data
from personal content. While BlackBerry 10’s plus points are
set to keep those very loyal BlackBerry fans happy, even after
their epic wait, the downside here is BlackBerry has moved
so slowly in the new OS’ development, it has lost a huge
amount of ground and respect in the mobile industry.

Windows Phone 8
Late developer in the mobile world, Microsoft, made a tentative start into
operating platforms a long time ago with Windows Mobile, but replaced it
with Windows Phone OS in 2010 in a bid to catch up with rivals. This again
failed to really take off or raise eyebrows until Microsoft launched Windows
Phone 8 in late 2012, using its strategic partnership with Nokia to bounce the
OS off the back off the good looking Lumia range of devices. With its cool
new image, Windows Phone 8 is attracting users with its Live Tiles display
that delivers automatic updates on what is happening, plus invitation-only
space called Rooms, where users can privately share notes and even group
chat with the people they choose. There is also SkyDrive, a smart Cloud
storage area for photos and Office Hub, that with SkyDrive allows you to do
business on the go. The plus point for Windows Phone 8 is it is so different
as an OS, it is interesting in its own right. The negative point is it is a small fish
in a large pond, and developers are more drawn to Android and iOS.

Lightning cables are bringing data to devices in a
bolt of electricity that even Thor himself would be

instance, has ensured many of its newer devices are
ready with Lightning ports that take the eight pin,
rather than regular 30 pin, cable. While many were
