Stereo Microscopes Range
How We Classify Stereo Microscopes
Stereo microscopes, also known as low magnification and dissecting microscopes
share a number of common, fundamental components. Examples of all these
components can be found in this range datasheet.
Pair of Angled Objectives, by definition all stereo microscopes have these, they are
typically hidden in the end/nose of the microscope, each objective connects to its
own eyepiece. Because they are angled they give a ‘3D’ or ‘Stereo’ view of the
subject.
Microscope Head, sometimes called the ‘body’ this accommodates all optical
components and any magnification changing mechanism. There are several types of
microscope head, this is the main way that different types of stereo microscopes are
classified, and priced, examples of all these types are included in this product range
datasheet.
The head types are:
o Single Magnification (to change magnification you have to
remove and insert different objectives and eyepieces) these are
the lowest priced microscope heads, the low price does not
necessarily mean that the image quality is less good. This type of
head typically has a rectangular objective holder.
o Dual Magnification sometimes called ‘Turret’ microscope
heads. In this type of microscope head there are 2 pairs of
objectives in the ‘nose’ of the microscope head. Each pair has
a different magnification eg 1x and 3X or 2x and 4X (total mags
10X/30X or 20X/40X with the std 10X eyepieces), to engage the
magnification required you rotate the nosepiece. Additional
magnifications can be obtained by also changing the
eyepieces. This class of microscope costs roughly 2X more than single
magnification microscopes.
o Zoom Magnification this is the most commonly purchased type of
stereo microscope. They are popular because you have a
continuous range of magnifications controlled by a zoom knob
eg 0.7X to 4.5X (total mags 7X to 45X with the std 10X eyepieces)
also, 1X to 10X (total mags 10X to 80X with the std 10X eyepieces)
and because you can also add auxiliary objectives eg 0.5X, 0.75X,
1.5X or 2X which change the zoom magnification range
proportionately and also alter the working distance. This type of
microscope can also have the largest range of illumination
accessories attached such as ring lights. You can also obtain
zoom microscopes with ‘trinocular heads’(T suffix) which gives the
user an additional vertical photoport onto which a camera can
be attached with the appropriate camera adapter. These
microscopes roughly cost 2X-4X more than dual magnification microscopes. In
summary zoom microscopes give the greatest range of magnifications,
working distances, photo options, accessories and are the most convenient to
use – no wonder they are popular!
Microscope Stand, the head attaches to the stand, some stands include builtin illumination, most include a focus mechanism. Sometimes the stand is
divided into 2 two further components:
1) the Focussing Ring – this holds the dual magnification and zoom
heads and has a rack & pinion focus mechanism, the focussing
ring attaches to the stand by either sliding onto a pole (or arbour)
or by fitting into an ‘E-Arm’ socket
2) The Microscope Stand onto which the focussing ring will connect,
there are numerous different types of stand such as long reach
stands, pillar stands, track stands, wall mounted stands and floor
stands.

The XTX-1C stereo microscope provides great
value for such high performance. These are
classed as single magnification microscopes
which can have a range of auxiliary objectives
and eyepieces inserted to achieve different
magnifications and working distances.
Each microscope is equipped with high quality
glass optics, a sturdy metal stand and built-in top
and bottom halogen lamp illumination.
The tough microscopes are designed for
observations
of
small
objects
such
as
entomological collections, pond dipping, plant
material, microfossils, rocks and industrial
inspection.
The simplicity of design and robustness of build
makes it particularly suitable for use by the young
enthusiast and in schools and colleges.
Every microscope is equipped with a pair of
objectives mounted in a removable, rectangular
objective cartridge and a pair of wide-field
eyepieces.
The binocular head is mounted on the focus
mechanism which, in turn is mounted on a
vertical pillar.
The head can be moved up the pillar to
accommodate larger specimens.
The head has interpupillary distance adjustment
and the left eyepiece has diopter adjustment.
This makes the microscope suitable for prolonged

Objectives
1X & 3.5X
The ST50 series of single magnification
stereo microscopes are designed for
those
inspection
and
assembly/soldering tasks requiring plenty
of distance between the microscope
and the object under observation.
The fully coated, excellent optics give an
upright, non-inverted image over a wide
field of view which is sharp and clear.
These optics also reflect accurately the
original true colour of the view object.
Accurate alignment of the optics ensures the
observer can enjoy a fatigue-free viewing
experience over a long period of time.
The ST-50A model has an upright (straightthrough) binocular head with locked-in
eyepieces.
The ST-50B model has a 45º inclined binocular
head with locked-in eyepieces.
Both heads can be freely angled as required.
The left ocular-tube has a diopter adjustment
range of ± 5mm.
The
interpupillary
distance
adjustment
between the eyepieces is 55-75mm.
As standard a slide-in 2X objective with a
working distance of 119mm is supplied along
with a pair of 10X Widefield eyepieces which
combine to give a total magnification of 20X.
This magnification range can be expanded
to 5X to 70X using the range of optional
objectives and eyepieces shown in the table.
Objectives are easy to change using a
dovetail slide-in mechanism
Each stereo is supplied with a pair of rubber
eyeguards & a dust cover.
The stand has a well painted metal base with
steel vertical and horizontal arms
There is a precision, smooth focus system
using a rack & pinion mechanism.
The incident light is mounted on a ball-joint
and provides adjustable illumination.
The electrics are GS and CE approved.
This microscope is compatible with GX
Microscopes’ illumination systems for those
requiring the greatest flexibility in microscope
positioning and object illumination.

The ZTX series of stereo microscopes are GX
Microscopes’ best value zoom microscopes, they
provide all-round, high quality images at extremely
good value prices.
Each microscope in the range is equipped with a pair
of 1X-4X zoom objectives controlled by a zoom knob
and a pair of 10X wide-field eyepieces.
Each
eyepiece links directly to one of the angled zoom
objectives, this gives a stunning 3 dimensional image of
your specimen. The optical quality is very good giving
a bright, crisp 3D image of the specimen
There are two types of microscope head:
ZTX with Binocular head
ZTX-T with Trinocular head for attaching a camera
Both models give 10X-40X zoom magnification range
with the 10X eyepieces, this magnification range can
be extended 2.5X -160X with the optional objectives
and eyepieces shown in the table.
The binocular eyepiece tubes are inclined at a
comfortable 45º.
The entire head can be easily
rotated through 360º, it has interpupillary distance
adjustment and both eyepiece tubes have diopter
adjustment. This makes these microscopes suitable for
ergonomic use by the greatest number of people and
assists in achieving parfocality when cameras are
attached.
The head of the microscope sits in a 76mm focussing
ring, this ring can be mounted on a very wide variety of
stands including pillar stands (eg 103A, 103B & 103C)
and long reach boom arm & articulated arm stands
(eg V1, V6 & V7).
Illumination is built-in with the stand providing both
incident and transmitted light. Alternatively, with all
other stands, illumination can be provided separately
using LED ringlights or LED & halogen spot or fibre optic
illuminators.
Each microscope is supplied with a pair of rubber
eyeguards, manual & a dust cover.
The stands have a well painted metal base with steel
poles. There is a precision, smooth focus system using a
rack & pinion mechanism.
The ZTX Microscope range is highly versatile and is an
excellent low cost option for industry, hobbyists,
researchers and educational establishments.

Working Distance = distance from the end of the objective lens to the point on the subject under
observation that is in focus (ie mid-focus point when there is an observable depth of focus range). The working
distance values may change slightly between batches of microscopes as superior optics are developed.
Each microscope in the range is equipped with a pair
of 0.7X-4.5X zoom objectives controlled by a zoom
knob and a pair of 10X extra wide-field eyepieces.
Each eyepiece links directly to one of the angled zoom
objectives, this gives a stunning 3 dimensional image of
your specimen. The optical quality is very good giving
a bright, crisp 3D image of the specimen
There are two types of microscope head:
XTL3 with Binocular head
XTL3T with Trinocular head for attaching a camera
Both models give 7X-45X zoom magnification range
with the 10X eyepieces, this magnification range can
be extended 3.5X -220X with the optional objectives
and eyepieces shown in the table.
The binocular eyepiece tubes are inclined at a
comfortable 45º. The entire head can be easily
rotated through 360º, it has interpupillary distance
adjustment and both eyepiece tubes have diopter
adjustment. This makes these microscopes suitable for
ergonomic use by the greatest number of people and
assists in achieving parfocality when cameras are
attached.
The head of the microscope sits in a 84mm focussing
ring, this ring can be mounted on a very wide variety of
stands including pillar stands (eg 103A, 103B & 103C)
and long reach boom arm & articulated arm stands
(eg V1, V6 & V7).
Illumination is built-in with the 101 stand providing both
incident and transmitted light. Alternatively, with all
other stands, illumination can be provided separately
using LED ringlights or LED & halogen spot or fibre optic
illuminators.
Each microscope is supplied with a pair of rubber
eyeguards, manual & a dust cover.
The stands have a well painted base with steel poles.
There is a precision, smooth focus system using a rack &
pinion mechanism.
The XTL Microscope range is our most versatile stereo
zoom microscope and is an excellent, professional
grade instrument for industry, hobbyists, researchers
and educational establishments.

Working Distance = distance from the end of the objective lens to the point on
the subject under observation that is in focus (ie mid-focus point when there is an
observable depth of focus range). The working distance values may change slightly
between batches of microscopes as superior optics are developed.
Each microscope in the range is equipped with a pair of 0.7X4.5X zoom objectives controlled by a zoom knob and a pair of
10X extra wide-field eyepieces. Each eyepiece links directly to
one of the angled zoom objectives, this gives a stunning 3
dimensional image of your specimen. The optical quality is
exceptionally good giving a bright, crisp 3D image of the
specimen
All of the MZS microscopes are supplied with trinocular heads.

Objectives
With over 1,000 installations in the UK alone, they provide the
highest quality, remarkably long working distance, wide field of
view images, a wide zoom range and are highly robust and
extremely well built, suitable for the most demanding uses.
The binocular eyepiece tubes are inclined at a comfortable 45º.
The entire head can be easily rotated through 360º, it has
interpupillary distance adjustment and both eyepiece tubes
have diopter adjustment.
This makes these microscopes
suitable for ergonomic use by the greatest number of people
and assists in achieving parfocality when cameras are
attached.
The head of the microscope sits in a 76mm focussing ring, this
ring can be mounted on a very wide variety of stands including
pillar stands (eg 0745, 103B & 103C) and long reach boom arm
& articulated arm stands (eg V1, V6 & V7).
Illumination is built-in with the 0745 stand providing both incident
and transmitted light. Alternatively, with all other stands,
illumination can be provided separately using LED ringlights or
LED & halogen spot or fibre optic illuminators.
Each microscope is supplied with a pair of rubber eyeguards,
manual & a dust cover.
The stands have a well painted base with steel poles. There is a
precision, smooth focus system using a rack & pinion
mechanism.
The MZS Microscope range is a highly versatile stereo zoom
microscope and is an excellent, professional grade instrument
for
industry,
hobbyists,
researchers
and
educational
establishments.
