Various business analysis techniques can be used in strategic planning, including SWOT analysis (Strengths,Weaknesses, Opportunities and Threats), PEST analysis (Political, Economic, Social and Technological), STEER analysis (Socio-cultural, Technological, Economic, Ecological and Regulatory factors), and EPISTEL (Environment, Political, Informatic, Social, Technological, Economic and Legal). Strategic planning is the formal consideration of an organization’s future course. All strategic planning deals with at least one of three key questions: 1. “What do we do?” 2. “For whom do we do it?” 3. “How do we excel?” With this in mind, the theme of this year’s high impact quarrying conference organized by The Institute of Quarrying Malaysia (IQM) is : “Strategic Planning & Design in Quarry (SPDQ)”. The quarrying profession has always been acknowledged worldwide as the foundation in the design, construction and manufacture of various innovative structures and is the vital component of any country worldwide striving for industrialized and developed nation status. This SPDQ Quarrying Conference series, organized annually, aims to be the de-facto quarrying conference for the global community and potential investors (foreign and local) to showcase the latest environmental-friendly technological advances and practices to further propel this economic industrial sector towards another level of excellence in the 21st century. The ready availability of world class technical experts and workforce conversant in state-of-the-art technological innovations complemented by economic and environmental savvy aspects would be a great asset to any country since this precious experienced economic human capital can be easily mobilized anywhere round the world to solve any impending engineering challenges overseas. SPDQ 2010’s aspiration is to act as an invaluable platform for all in the industry to network, exchange ideas and offer resolutions to further strengthen the prestige of the quarrying profession and industrial sector towards achieving further economic enhancement and industrial growth for any nation worldwide.
