March 12 Program: WGHS Interact Club
HOST: Chris Burns
PRESENTER: Nancy Ruda, TJ Lawton-Stone, and Colin McDermit
Chris Burns introduced WGHS Interact advisor, Nancy
Ruda and co-presidents, TJ Lawton-Stone and Colin
McDermit. Colin and TJ summarized the purpose and goals
of the Interact Club. “Service gives us all a purpose,” Colin
said. Colin explained how former advisor, Marie
Fitzsimmons inspired him to join Interact and how under her
leadership, the club became to feel like a family. The
Interact Club has about 30 active members ages 12 to 18
and is inclusive of all students, including students with
developmental disabilities. Before Marie left for international
travel, she installed Colin and TJ as co-presidents. And
even though Marie’s shoes were hard to fill, Colin said
Nancy Ruda has a done a “phenomenal” job in the advisor
role.
For TJ, being part of Interact has helped her mature, make
new friends and develop social skills, work skills, team work
skills, and project planning and organization abilities.
“Interact is about making international connections and
having fun.” The Interact Club’s goals are to obtain as many
members as possible, volunteer whenever they can, and to
be inclusive. Interact is involved with many community
events including The Arc dinner, Humane Society
breakfast, Labor of Love dinner, United Way dinner, and
the local mobile food pantry. They are currently conducting
a pashmina scarf sale as a fundraiser to help the 7th grade

WG Student of the Month:
Alexandra Joslyn
The Watkins-Montour Rotary
Club honored Watkins Glen
High School student Alexandra
Joslyn as its March Student of
the Month. Teacher Kelly Muir
said Alex has impressed a lot of
people even though she’s only
been at Watkins Glen for a
couple years. In a vote among
teachers for student of the
month, Alex won by a landslide.
She is smart, always prepared,
patient, and has a great sense
of humor. She is also a big help to teachers as a
teaching assistant. Teacher, Mr. Richmond said that
Alex is a making great strides to better her school and
community and demonstrates strength of character and
a global mindset. Alex is involved in SADD, Interact, and
Habitat for Humanity. Alex said she is honored to
receive Rotary’s recognition and happy to be part of
WGHS and the Watkins Glen community. She thanked
her family and mentors who have inspired her and
taught her to love teaching. Alex aspires to be a History
Teacher and has already been accepted to SUNY
Geneseo. She looks forward to further incorporating
herself in the community.
