Literacy Outreach Project
The Library’s Literacy Outreach Project continues this spring and summer. This
unique project provides programs and services for the four forms of literacy: Adult
Literacy, Digital Literacy, Early Childhood Literacy and Financial Literacy. This
project would not be made possible without the generosity of the Friends of the
Westhampton Free Library and their generous sponsors.
Adult Literacy
We have added another “Literacy Kit” to our collection thanks to the kind donation
from Gail Berry O’Neill (Gold Sponsor). The Library designed this Kit using tutor
and student feedback. The Kit is for the adult student just starting to learn to read
English. The Kit contains several very basic books, word games, a picture dictionary
and an audio tutorial. Digital Literacy
Get the latest and the best of the digital world. It’s easy! Our Head of Computer
and Digital Services, Dave Jones, will show you how. The Library would like to
thank Claudia Wasserman (Platinum Sponsor of the Literacy Outreach Project
Fundraiser) for sponsoring these programs.
BLOCK THIS! COMPUTER SECURITY IN A DIGITAL AGE: Friday, May
29 at 3:00pm. Computer Viruses, Trojan Horses, Malware, and Spam are all aimed
at harming your computer or stealing your identity. Join us as we show you how to
protect yourself from these and other forms of hostile software.
INTRODUCTION TO INBOX ZERO: Friday, June 19 at 3:00pm.The emails just
keep coming. And coming. And coming. Maybe they multiply when you are not
looking? Fight back! Learn the seven steps to manage your email content and achieve
that e-nirvana: an empty inbox.
Early Childhood Literacy
The Idea Place would like to thank the fundraising efforts of the Friends of the
Westhampton Free Library and the donors of the Literacy Outreach Project
Fundraiser held last August. Each child will receive a hardcover book for every
hundred books read. When the child completes the program by having read one
thousand books, teen classic story books will have been earned for that child’s
personal library. Current titles to be purchased is The Dot by Peter Reyn followed by
We’re Going On a Bear Hunt by Michael Rosen.

Talking with Head of Reference Jay Janoski
Head of Reference Jay Janoski celebrated eight years at Westhampton Free
Library this past April. According to Jay, time has not only gone by quickly
but working in Westhampton has been a very rewarding experience. “We have
a core of year round residents that really utilize this Library. I love to see our
patrons take advantage of all the services we offer. I feel like this Library is an
important part of the community. I believe our patrons feel the same way,” he
said.
He has worked in the old library and the new “green” one.
“This building is a true pleasure to work in. The original
building was not without its charm, but it was very tight
quarters, and nothing further could be done with it in terms
of creating space. The director’s office was smaller than the
public bathroom. Working in a green building is great, the
air is always clean and we have so much natural light. When
we first opened this building there was a tremendous “Wow
Factor” when patrons came in for the first time. They were
just as excited as we were,” he continued.
When you work at the Reference Desk it gives you a chance to make a genuine
difference to the people who come in. “Recently we had a patron whose aid
worker called. Her father had drawn a cartoon for a newspaper to celebrate the
armistice and the end of World War l. The patron wanted to get a new copy of
the cartoon, as hers had yellowed. She took the clipping from the frame where
she kept it, and of course the old newsprint just crumbled. From the pieces she
was able to tell me the name and page of the paper and what was on the opposite
side of the page. From that information I was able to track down the paper and
edition and find a library in Kentucky that had the paper in microfilm in its
archives. They were kind enough to scan and send it to me. I was able to print
up several new copies for her and the patron could not have been happier. That
was very satisfying to me. I got to use my reference skills, and I really made
someone’s day in the process,” he concluded.
Not only is Jay a great librarian but also talented musician, playing guitar for
The Vendettas. He is always looking for a challenging reference question, so
have them ready the next time you visit the Westhampton Free Library.
A Message From The Director
The Westhampton Free Library has lots of exciting programs planned for this spring
and summer. I encourage you to visit us and see what we have to offer. If you can’t
make it into the library, visit us online at westhamptonlibrary.net and check out all you

our voting area (Westhampton, Westhampton Beach and
Quiogue). If you have any questions please email me at

Thank you for your constant support of the library. Excellent service to our patrons is what we strive for and

FRIENDS OF FAMILY FARMING POETRY CONTEST WINNERS
It’s the grand finale for the winning poets in the Friends of Family Farming contest!
Back to the Days of the
American Gothic
The Seed
A Poem for Two Voices
by Katherine St. George
by Sedona Silvera and Sophia Mangiameli
Pesticides
pollution
ladybugs

all litter the supermarket tiles.
Growth-hormone chicken in aisle nine!
Chemically crafted soy beans in aisle six!
What has happened to our image of farming?
To the smiling family,
straw hats and all
standing proudly in front of their tangerine crop
while the harsh sun glares at their glee from a bird’s eye
view.
Can we remake the mud-stained yet beautiful utopia that is
the traditional farm life of
What happened?
Can we bring it back?
picture books?
The overalls and pitchforks?
The feathery alarm clock that loyally cock-a-doodle-doos
faithfully every sunrise?
Or
are we confined
like the animals we treat so cruelly
to the science labs that create
“food”
to the dim pens that are
too
too
small
for the hens
to the ammonia-stained beef under florescent lights?
Of course not.
We’re humans.
And the American Gothic is still visible to the naked eye.
She dug a hole
Dropped in a seed.
Then, buried it.
And watered it.
Each day.
She waited. She waited.
It started to sprout.
It’s on its way. It’s on its way.
She waited years.
It has arrived!
They’re big and green, They’re big and green,
The fruit, juicy and sweet, Chomp, chomp,
Yummy, Yum, yum,
What if
There are red ones, too?
A beautiful apple tree
Just right
Joyful and happy Joyful and happy
Then one day the apples turned brown
The tree started to frown
It sadly was falling down.
It had lived its life. It had lived its life.
The apple tree will be missed
But...
She planted another seed,
Another apple tree,
More apples to eat and love.
