CHAIRMAN’S NOTE I am delighted that my first full year as Chairman of Bord Scannán na hÉireann/the Irish Film Board (IFB) has been one of growth and continued success for Irish creative talent and for the Irish film, television and animation industry. With the support of the IFB, the hard work and creative endeavours of Irish talent in front and behind the camera has been rewarded with both local and international recognition and awards. As the development agency for film, television and animation in Ireland, the IFB is committed to supporting Irish talent, creativity and enterprise. In conjunction with the Irish Government’s continued support for the industry with the advent of the new film and television tax credit in 2015, the Board are focused on the future evolution of Board Scannán na hÉireann/the Irish Film Board. With this in mind, we have begun the consultation process on a new Five Year Strategic Plan for the agency, which will focus on the future goals for the agency itself, the development of the industry overall and the outcomes the IFB aims to deliver for Irish creative talent, Irish and international audiences and the Irish digital economy. With the publication of the new strategy document in 2015, we hope to ensure that the IFB continues to provide a strong foundation for the making of film, television and animation in Ireland. Films, telling Irish stories, have been enjoyed by audiences and recognised across the globe for their excellent work throughout 2014. The year began at Sundance with four IFB funded films in selection, garnering strong reviews and achieving major North American sales for both Calvary and Frank. Irish films and stories continued to be represented at all of the major festivals and markets from Berlin to Cannes, SXSW, Annecy and Toronto. The year finished up with a major focus on Irish film at the Les Arcs European Film Festival and co-production market in France in December. A large number of Irish films have also been released worldwide this year, particularly in the US. Calvary had a very strong opening weekend at the US box office when it was released in August, with a worldwide release rolled out by Fox Searchlight. Other films to be released in the US and elsewhere this year include Frank and Life’s a Breeze (Magnolia Pictures), The Canal (The Orchard), Jimmy’s Hall (Sony), The Summit (IFC) and Song of the Sea (GKids), all representing major US deals and audiences for these films. Investing in Irish Creative Talent Bord Scannán na hÉireann/the Irish Film Board (IFB) remains focused on developing Irish creative talent both in front of and behind the camera. Many Irish directors, writers, actors and crew are succeeding on the world stage, with the support of IFB funding. The IFB continues to invest in feature documentaries following on from the successes of The Summit, Rough Rider, One Million Dubliners and Unbreakable. New projects include a documentary featuring the legendary jump jockey AP McCoy and a co-production, The Visit, about the possible visit of extra-terrestrials which will screen at the Sundance Film Festival this January. A number of Irish actors who started their careers on IFB funded productions in Ireland have seen their Irish Film and Television Animation Because of IFB investment, Irish children for generations to come will also have the opportunity to see Irish stories in animation, film and television. IFB supported projects this year include the upcoming animated feature film Song of The Sea directed by Tomm Moore, which is one of the most beautiful animated films I have seen, based on Irish folklore and stories. Rising stars to watch out for in 2015 who have been working on IFB funded productions include Moe Dunford (Patrick’s Day), Charlene McKenna (Ripper Street), Sam Keeley (What Richard Did), Peter Coonan (The Guarantee), Aisling Franciosi (Jimmy’s Hall), and Barry Keoghan (Mammal). Both Sam and Aisling were also listed as part of the prestigious Screen International ‘Stars of Tomorrow’ line-up and Moe Dunford is the Irish ‘Shooting Star’ at the Berlin Film Festival in February. The IFB is the largest funder of the Irish animation industry in the state, investing in both animated films and television series for young children. Successful preschool animated TV shows, developed and produced in Ireland, include Wildernuts produced by Kavaleer which showcased at Annecy this year and Puffin Rock starring the voice of Chris O’Dowd and produced by Cartoon Saloon. Other established Irish actors who returned to work on major Irish features included Domhnall Gleeson and Saoirse Ronan in Brooklyn, Colin Farrell in The Lobster, which filmed on location in Kerry in the spring of 2014. We hope to see Jamie Dornan in The Siege of Jadotville which is set for production in 2015. High Levels of Production Activity IFB’s new catalogue Irish Film 2015 – In the Spotlight showcases fifteen Irish features, eleven coproduction features, four animated TV series, four feature documentaries, one international TV series, five webisodes and eleven short films all of which were produced this year with IFB support. The IFB invested €10 million generating production expenditure of over €40 million in relation to IFB funded projects in 2014. The IFB has been awarded the same level of funding in 2015 as it received in 2014. The overall figures for the industry in 2014 show that production activity for the independent film, television drama and animation sector has increased significantly exceeding €200 million in 2014, reaching the highest production activity levels on record. The new Section 481 film tax credit (replacing the investor based film and television incentive) came into effect on 1st January 2015. The new benefit of up to 32% of qualifying expenditure which includes all persons working in Ireland will provide enhanced support for film TV drama and animation production and is a strong reflection of the Irish Government’s support for the sector. The IFB has been working closely with the Revenue and the production sector in developing the detailed arrangements for the new film and television tax credit and will continue to do so as the new scheme is rolled out. International Production 2014 saw high levels of foreign direct investment with a large number of high-profile film and TV productions filming on location in Ireland. Major TV productions including the third series of Vikings and Ripper Street, as well as a second series of Penny Dreadful all continued production here. The forthcoming Star Wars: The Force Awakens also chose Ireland as a film location, using the stunning backdrop of Skellig Michael off the coast of Co. Kerry. Irish Audiences for Irish Films Irish films telling important Irish stories were also a success at home with eighteen Irish films released in Irish cinemas in 2014. Calvary took over €1.6 million at the Irish box office and The Stag made more than its total budget at the Irish box office taking over €600,000, with both films receiving much critical acclaim. The Guarantee telling the story of the bailout of the Irish banking system was one of the first Irish live cinema events. The world premiere of the film and live Q&A were screened across eighteen locations throughout the country. The Guarantee will be broadcast on TV3 this year. We are looking forward to seeing Glassland, Song of the Sea, Brooklyn and Sing Street in Irish cinemas over the coming months. Irish films broadcast on RTÉ and funded by the IFB have achieved strong audience figures. RTÉ 2, in partnership with the IFB broadcast a number of Irish films on a prime Saturday night slot from September. What Richard Did was the last film broadcast before Christmas. Feature documentaries were also a hit with RTÉ audiences. The award-winning documentary films The Summit, Rough Rider, One Million Dubliners and Unbreakable are examples of projects which received record ratings when they were broadcast on Irish television this year. Training & Catalyst Project Screen Training Ireland, managed by the IFB, provided thirty-five courses which were attended by over 1,200 participants. Major training events included Screen Leaders, the VXF Summit and two successful storytelling programmes for animation and live action. Screen Training Ireland has a new and refreshed website and the IFB will be launching a new report on screen training in 2015 which will look at skills needs and the funding of screen training in Ireland. The IFB announced the commissioning of three successful films for the new Catalyst Project scheme. Catalyst Project offered up-and-coming filmmakers the opportunity to compete for three low-budget feature film funding awards. Over 400 directors, producers and writers participated in the initial stages of this project which included two days of training with masterclasses from Jim Sheridan and Lenny Abrahamson. 7 Future The primary role of the IFB is to invest in the development of Irish talent in front of, and behind the camera and to ensure that Irish audiences have the opportunity to see Irish stories on film. In 2014 there was a wide public debate about Irish film. The IFB is very proud of the Irish films we have supported and believes strongly in the strength and depth of the work. I feel very privileged to have had the opportunity to engage with and support the creative talent working in the sector. Keeping Irish film culture at the heart of Irish life is our key objective and the IFB looks forward to continuing the conversation in 2015. In 2015 we will announce a new Five Year Strategy for the agency which will build on recent successes. As Ireland moves ahead into economic recovery, the Irish film, television and animation sector, which has grown steadily during the economic downturn, will have an important role to play in terms of representing Irish culture, telling Irish stories, creating Irish jobs and promoting Irish talent on the international stage in the year to come. JAMES HICKEY Chief Executive Bord Scannán na hÉireann/ The Irish Film Board WWW.IRISHFILMBOARD.IE New films from major Irish directors include Sing Street directed by John Carney, Brooklyn directed by John Crowley, The Guarantee directed by Ian Power and Room directed by Lenny Abrahamson. The IFB is also delighted to have supported the debut feature films from up and coming directors including Darren Thornton’s A Date for Mad Mary, Mark Noonan’s You’re Ugly Too and Simon Fitzmaurice’s My Name is Emily. profiles rise this year. Jack Reynor, recognised for his performances in IFB funded films What Richard Did and Dollhouse, saw his international star rise further in one of the lead roles in Transformers which became a worldwide box office hit this year. Jack has since appeared in the Irish film Glassland, which will be screened at the Sundance Film Festival this January and is scheduled for a 2015 release.
