Caring for the Community
C
edars-Sinai’s care extends far beyond our campus to reach deep into the
community. Just a few examples of the Medical Center’s positive impact
throughout Southern California include a nurse bringing much-needed
asthma medication to a child in Compton through COACH for Kids and Their
Families®—a program of Cedars-Sinai’s Maxine Dunitz Children’s Health Center—
grandparents who can live independently thanks to our Lifeline program, and
our resident graduates serving those in need at community clinics. Our Board of
Directors, faculty, staff, and volunteers are all passionate about giving back to the
region that has nurtured us for 109 years.
In 2010, Cedars-Sinai contributed $502.4 million for the community’s wellbeing—but there are many additional benefits that cannot be quantified. We reach
out to L.A.’s most vulnerable neighborhoods to ensure that our fellow Angelenos
have access to quality healthcare—at senior fairs to provide free medical care,
through our counseling services at public schools in high-risk areas, via mobile
units bringing health services directly to children and families, and in many other
settings. This year’s Telemundo Health & Wellness Expo alone brought more than
30,000 people together with some 150 Cedars-Sinai physicians, nurses, and other
healthcare professionals for free medical screenings, flu shots, nutrition
counseling, risk assessment for breast cancer, and other important services.
“We strive to empower communities to
become healthier through vital programs
that reach thousands of people each year.”
Caring for the community goes beyond caring for those who are ill. We strive to
empower communities to become healthier through vital wellness programs that
reach thousands of people each year. Cedars-Sinai supports the well-being of entire
neighborhoods through initiatives like our program in Crenshaw that educates
participants about healthy food choices. We also know we must continue encouraging
and educating future generations of healthcare professionals about the humanitarian
value of medicine. Every year we train gifted nurses, residents, and fellows to enter
the global community and make a real difference. We also mentor young local
students interested in pursuing healthcare careers.
We are proud that those who can afford to go anywhere for their care
choose Cedars-Sinai, but our pride runs every bit as deep with the knowledge
that we serve those who have nowhere else to turn. Caring for our community
has been at the heart of our mission since 1902. Through good times and bad,
we will always remain faithful to the community that sustains us.

CATALYST FALL 2011
Looking for Magic
W
By Louise Cobb
hen her daughter, Devin, shaved Debbi Singer’s head to prepare
for chemotherapy, Debbi made the best of it—like everything
else in her life. “We made it fun,” she says. “We rented a hotel
room by the beach with my closest girlfriends, shaved my head, and sipped
champagne.” She describes the experience as empowering, adding: “I
certainly wasn’t going to go through chemo without rocking and having
a good time. I just looked for opportunities to create magical moments.”
Debbi’s golden blond locks are now cut in a short pixie style. Her
sun-kissed skin is a testament to years spent living by the beach and
working at her family-style Italian restaurant, C&O Trattoria at Venice Pier.
As she sits in the living room of her house on one of the Venice canals,
Debbi’s brown eyes always seem to be smiling. She’s confident. She’s
vivacious. And she’s a survivor.
In spring 2009, Debbi started experiencing bloating and mild intestinal
problems that would have been easy enough to ignore. Still, she sought
medical attention. “I knew something wasn’t right,” she remembers.
A gynecological exam didn’t reveal any problems, so Debbi insisted
on an ultrasound—which showed the presence of an ovarian cyst. “I was
tenacious because I knew I needed to advocate for myself,” she says.
Debbi postponed her honeymoon to have the cyst removed without delay.
It was a timely decision that ultimately saved her life: The cyst was cancerous.
She began treatment at Cedars-Sinai right away. It was there that Debbi
noticed the pamphlets for an event called run for her®. Since 2005, the
annual 5K race has brought nearly 12,000 men and women to the streets
around Cedars-Sinai to support ovarian cancer research, raising almost
$4 million for the Cedars-Sinai Women’s Cancer Program at the Samuel Oschin
Comprehensive Cancer Institute. It
is one of the largest ovarian cancer
run/walks in the nation.
The race was scheduled just
two short weeks after Debbi’s final
chemotherapy treatment.
“I decided I was going to do
it,” she says. “It gave me
something to strive for. I just kept
telling myself that I was going to
be well.” Debbi began measuring
her strength in the number of
steps she could climb after each
trip to the infusion center,
counting more and more stairs
the closer she got to the race.
But simply participating wasn’t enough for
Debbi: She was determined to also become a top fund-raiser for the run for
her® program along with her team, Debbi’s Angels Kick Butt. “I got
competitive about raising money—I wanted to help people who were going
through the same thing I was,” she explains. “I knew I was going to be
in that race come hell or high water. Everybody around me mobilized: We
were going to go out there, conquer the challenge, and have a blast doing it.”
On the day of the race, Debbi, wearing the turquoise run for her®
T-shirt and bib number 3448, walked hand-in-hand with her 7-year-old
granddaughter and her 12-year-old niece at the head of her pack. “It was
a celebration of my wellness,” Debbi recalls.
Kelli Sargent, founder of run for her®, started the walk in 2005 in
honor of her mother, Nanci Sargent, who had ovarian cancer. Although
Nanci passed away in 2008, she was still a motivating force for Debbi. “I
felt an immediate connection to Nanci, even though I‘d never met her,
because we were in the same shoes,” she says. “It brought me so much joy
to be doing something to celebrate her life, too.”
Debbi not only finished a 5K walk a mere two weeks after undergoing
grueling chemotherapy—her team also ranked second in total funds
raised. Says Debbi: “We helped raise money for women everywhere.
Research and early detection are so important with ovarian cancer. This is
me on a soapbox telling every woman ‘if something feels different in your
body, don’t ignore it, and don’t tell yourself you’re too busy with your kids
or other things.’ Listening to my body is what saved my life.”
“Dr. Nini gives
me relief from
chronic pain and
he’s amazing.
He listens and
understands me.
I think it’s so
important to say
‘thank you,’ and it’s
such an easy thing
to do. I’m just
so grateful.”

n a sweltering spring day, the playground outside the 112th Street
Elementary School in Watts is bursting with healthy energy. More
than 600 kids are swirling their hips to keep hula hoops up,
dancing to hip-hop music, dirtying their hands planting vegetable seeds, or
tasting healthy dishes.
A rosy-cheeked fourth-grade boy is poring over rows of healthy seedlings
in containers. Selecting a green bean plant, he holds it up, beaming, revealing
two missing front teeth. “I can’t wait to plant this in my mom’s garden,” he
bursts out.
The Think Healthy Community Nutrition Health Fair is one of many
Cedars-Sinai community outreach projects that provide school-based nutrition
education and creative ways of integrating physical activity into everyday life.
It is part of a year-round Be Healthy, Be Strong! prevention and education
effort by COACH for Kids and Their Families®, a program of Cedars-Sinai’s
Maxine Dunitz Children’s Health Center that brings free quality healthcare
services to underserved, low-income communities around Los Angeles.
The incidence of childhood obesity has tripled in the past 30 years. Obese
or overweight children are at increased risk for physical and mental health
problems that can—among other things—undermine their ability to learn. For
children from low-income families, the most important factors are limited
access to healthy foods, resources, and safe places to play.
“Healthy eating programs are one of the ways COACH is making a big
difference in this community,” says Maria Castaneda, the school’s Healthy Start
co-coordinator. “We’re grateful for Cedars-Sinai’s commitment to bringing
about positive change.”
Addressing a
Growing Need
R
eflecting the growing need for
quality, affordable healthcare in the
Hispanic community, an estimated
30,000 people attended this year’s Telemundo
52 Salud & Bienestar (Health & Wellness)
Expo at the Los Angeles Convention Center.
A team of 170 Cedars-Sinai physicians,
nurses, and other healthcare professionals
provided free medical screenings, flu shots,
nutrition counseling, yoga instruction, risk
assessment for breast cancer, and more.
Fitness and fun activities by COACH for Kids
and Their Families®—a program of CedarsSinai’s Maxine Dunitz Children’s Health
Center—included the chance to play doctor
or nurse for a day.
“Critical health issues—
diabetes, hypertension,
and high cholesterol—
were more evident this year,”
notes Cedars-Sinai Chief
Nursing Officer Linda
Burnes Bolton, RN.
Irene Sierra waited
patiently with her husband
in a long line for diabetes
and cholesterol screenings.
“It’s worth the wait,” she
says. “My main concern is high cholesterol.” Sierra says this was the first time
she was tested for blood glucose and cholesterol levels, adding: “I’ve been
waiting all year [for the Health Expo]. Cedars-Sinai has good doctors and is
a good hospital. This is a good opportunity for me.”
“The majority of people we saw at the Health Expo didn’t have health
insurance,” says Abby Ang, RN. After checking attendees’ blood pressure,
she counseled them in Spanish about the test and directed them to the
next area for additional screenings.
“Cedars-Sinai’s team contribution to this year’s Health Expo made a
significant difference, attracting larger crowds to the Expo for free health
services,” says Victor Franco, vice president of Community Relations for
Telemundo. “We couldn’t be more pleased with our partnership, especially
with the expertise of the Cedars-Sinai team.”
The large turnout represented a 30 percent increase in attendance over
last year’s Health Expo.
Some 170 Cedars-Sinai medical staff volunteered
at this year’s Telemundo Health & Wellness Expo,
providing health screenings and services to
thousands of community residents.

March of Dimes
March for Babies
C
edars-Sinai staff made this year’s Greater Los Angeles March for Babies
an overwhelming success by raising a total of $210,771 for the March
of Dimes. Cedars-Sinai President and CEO Thomas M. Priselac
chaired the Los Angeles March for Babies.
The Medical Center’s 48 teams accounted for 1,113 participants in the
event, part of the national March of Dimes’ biggest annual fund-raiser. Teams
walked a three-mile route beginning at Exposition Park near the University
of Southern California’s University Park campus.
Melissa Joan Hart and Joey Lawrence, stars of ABC Family’s “Melissa and
Joey,” served as this year’s celebrity hosts. Numerous healthcare, business,
and community leaders also attended the event.
Originally established by Franklin D. Roosevelt to fight polio, the
March of Dimes funded the development of the Salk vaccine that
eradicated the disease. The foundation now works to improve the health
of babies by preventing birth defects, premature birth, and infant
mortality. Each year, more than half a million babies are born prematurely,
and more than 120,000 suffer serious birth defects.
Priselac calls it a “joy and a privilege” for Cedars-Sinai to be part of the
March of Dimes community. “There is no work more important than
enriching the lives of families, most notably those impacted by premature
birth,” he says.
Making
Holiday
Dreams
Come True
O
n a breezy mid-December evening, Cedars-Sinai employees
Debora Wright and Desiree Guzman found themselves standing
in the living room of the small South Los Angeles home of Lisa R.,
a single mother of four. Signs of holiday cheer were barely noticeable.
Under the plastic tabletop Christmas tree in the corner sat a single gift: a
present for Lisa, wrapped in a brown paper lunch bag.
Quickly, the visitors went out to their car, popped the trunk, and proceeded
to bring in armloads of gifts. Lisa and her kids watched, wide-eyed, as
stacks of beautifully wrapped presents piled up, dwarfing their tree.
“My husband left us 10 months ago,” Lisa told Desiree. “I didn’t think
I was going to be able to give my children a Christmas this year.”
The presents were donated by Debora, Desiree, and their colleagues in
the Department of Pediatrics as part of Adopt a Family, which matches
hospital staff with families in need over the holidays. Adopt a Family is an
initiative of COACH for Kids and Their Families®—a program of CedarsSinai’s Maxine Dunitz Children’s Health Center. Families are identified by
COACH for Kids social workers to be part of the program. They then
submit a short wish list, usually consisting of basic staples and household
items, as well as educational games, books, and puzzles for the children.
Lisa had asked for kitchen knives and a set of towels, either white or beige.
“When I handed her a full set of both white and beige towels, Lisa started
to cry,” says Debora.
Adopt a Family started at Cedars-Sinai 12 years ago and has been growing
ever since—12 departments made wishes come true for 12 families in
underserved communities in Los Angeles last year.
“Everyone wants to make a difference,” says Debora, a service line manager
in Pediatrics. “My team gets in such good spirits about this project every holiday
season—it’s infectious. We all work together to get everything on the list, we
add small extra gifts, and we carefully wrap every single thing,” she says.
Desiree, who coordinated the effort for Pediatrics, recalls how patient
and appreciative Lisa’s children were, opening the gifts slowly instead of
tearing through them. “The 4-year-old boy opened a book and made his
big brother stop opening his own gifts so that he could read it to him—
cover to cover, twice,” she recalls.
The grand finale of Lisa and her family’s early Christmas was a Target
gift card for the 11-year-old girl so she could get the item on her holiday
wish list: a bicycle.
“It was such a special day,” Debora says. “I’m very thankful to Lisa and
her children for letting us be part of their family for a few moments.”

hen Iris Cooper Smolens needed heart surgery, her daughters—
Judy Boyd, Trudy Abell, and Marilyn Polovina—knew they had
to bring her from her Las Vegas home to the Cedars-Sinai Heart
Institute for the best medical expertise. Iris spent eight months at CedarsSinai, with her daughters by her side every single day. Iris was able to
return to Las Vegas for further recovery. Courageous and kind to the end,
she passed away in July 2010. “Our mother was an extraordinary woman.
She received the best possible care at Cedars-Sinai, and that gave us the
chance to keep her in our lives for over one year,” Judy says.
To show their appreciation, Judy, Trudy, and Marilyn
made a gift through Build With Us, a fund-raising effort
benefiting the new home for the Heart Institute: the
Advanced Health Sciences Pavilion (AHSP). Iris’ name will
be among those displayed on the beautiful stainless steel
arcs on the new plaza-level bridge from the main Medical

present to its future. As Judy puts it, “I know my mom
would love that our gift will benefit future research, and
we wanted her name somehow attached with the AHSP.”

The Major Catalyst
By
George!
The OPI Products founder
speaks out on altruism,
patriotism, and George-isms.
By Kim Kowsky
G
eorge W. Schaeffer commissioned a muralist to paint the
railroad-facing side of one of his company’s factory buildings
so that passing trains’ passengers would have something
beautiful to look at.
“It was something to make them smile,” he says.
Simply put, the founder, CEO, and president of OPI Products, Inc.
likes making people smile—a goal that explains many of his ventures,
from creating affordable luxury nail polish to inventing a children’s toy.
George, however, offers a different motivation for his recent decision
to make a $10 million gift to Cedars-Sinai’s Advanced Health Sciences
Pavilion, a state-of-the-art research and treatment center currently
under construction to house the hospital’s nationally renowned Heart
Institute and Neurosciences programs.
“I’ve got an edifice complex,” he says with a laugh. “It’s not so
much about having your name up there in big letters. Capital projects
appeal to me because I like to see the end result of something. I know
it’s done.”
A longtime resident of Beverly Hills, George became a supporter
of Cedars-Sinai after undergoing quadruple bypass surgery in 1996
with Alfredo Trento, MD, director of the Cedars-Sinai Heart Institute’s
Division of Cardiothoracic Surgery, whose excellent care included the
advice that he start drinking two glasses of red wine every day. George
says Dr. Trento inspired him to become a wine connoisseur.
10
CATALYST FALL 2011

Advanced Health Sciences Pavilion,
opening at Cedars-Sinai in 2013
“George Schaeffer’s remarkable gift will help create an incredible
building where the Heart Institute’s surgeons, cardiologists, and
researchers can easily congregate under one roof for the rich
exchange of scientific ideas, views, and concepts.”
ALFREDO TRENTO, MD
Dr. Trento, who says he’s glad he had a positive
influence on his patient’s wine-drinking habits, also
notes that George’s remarkable gift will help create
an “incredible building where the Heart Institute’s
surgeons, cardiologists, and researchers can easily
congregate under one roof for the rich exchange of
scientific ideas, views, and concepts.”
“George is a very nice person who has shown
incredible generosity,” Dr. Trento adds. “He has been
extremely open to issues related to the hospital and
understands very well the mission of this institution.”
A
n imposing, dynamic man who routinely tries
out new OPI polishes on his own perfectly
manicured nails, George is a self-described
eccentric who once took a joyride on a forklift to the
ceiling of his warehouse. When he acquired an adjacent
parcel of land to expand his plant, he embedded a line
of quarters in the concrete of a new ramp. “It was a
symbolic way of indicating that this road was going
to lead to riches,” he explains. “And it has.”
He shares a large open office with his vice president
and artistic director, Suzi Weiss-Fischmann. A model
electric train pulling cars with OPI nail-polish bottles
runs around the perimeter of the accounting and
customer service departments, but no one turns it on
unless George—who describes himself as “nuts about
trains”—is in the office. “It’s one of those idiosyncrasies,”
he explains. “We have a lot of George-isms here.”
His rugged New York accent belies an earnest
geniality and kindness. On a tour of OPI’s 10-acre
campus, which contains every aspect of the business,
from manufacturing and assembly to sales and shipping,
George—whose face is framed by a neatly trimmed
beard—playfully teases an employee for his unkempt,
shaggy facial hair. He also greets janitors, shipping clerks,
food-service employees, and assembly workers by name,
and brags about never laying off an employee—even when
12
CATALYST FALL 2011
he acquired machines that could do the work of 16 people.
“We just found other jobs here for them,” he says.
He and his parents fled their native Hungary during
the 1956 Revolution. “There was still a lot of anti-Semitism
in Hungary then,” recalls George, an only child whose
parents were Holocaust survivors. “Only 10 Jewish families
lived in a town that used to have 1,000 Jews. We were on
the first plane to America that Eisenhower allowed.”
Nine years old when he first set foot in the U.S.,
George attended school without knowing any English
and became the proverbial “latchkey kid.” But those
hardscrabble times taught him lessons about self-reliance.
“I learned to fend for myself,” he says. “And if you want
something done, do it yourself.”
H
e also developed a deep and abiding love for
his adopted country. “Everything I now have
came out of being here, in America,” he says.
This self-proclaimed “staunch American” proudly
flies the stars and stripes and refuses to relocate his
manufacturing business overseas. Nearly 80 percent of
his 600 employees are immigrants who collectively
speak 48 languages, he says. He honors every employee
who receives citizenship with a U.S. Savings Bond. He
also gives away scholarships and computers every year
to the children of employees, provided they write a
short essay describing their need.
“In America, there’s opportunity all over the ground. All
you have to do is bend down to pick it up,” says George.
“A lot of people don’t like to bend down.”
He earned a degree in International Economics at
New York’s City College and plunged into the family
half-slip manufacturing business. The demand for
slips soon disappeared with the advent of pantyhose,
so he helped oversee the company’s transition into
sportswear production. In 1980, he had the opportunity
to buy a Los Angeles-based dental-supply house from
his father’s second cousin. “Bending down to pick it up”
“I’ve got an edifice complex.
required moving his family to Los Angeles. His daughter
was born five years later at Cedars-Sinai.
George soon found out that manicurists were buying
dental acrylic from the company to fashion so-called
“porcelain” nails. He sold off the dental supply house and
began building the nail business, which he renamed OPI,
after the original company’s initials.
I
n 1987, OPI introduced its first collection of nail
colors, made with a superior formula and packaged in
a patented bottle that George designed. Instead of
offering hundreds of colors, OPI started out with just 60
core colors, but would rotate in themed collections twice
a year, in line with fashion cycles. Whereas competitors
named their colors with numbers—Red 2 or Orange 11—
George decided to give OPI’s polish colors clever
monikers such as “I’m Not Really a Waitress,” “Up the
Amazon with a Paddle,” or “Catherine the Grape.” And, at
a time when most nail polish cost 99 cents, he decided
to market his product for $5, and sold it exclusively to
nail professionals—who in turn retailed it to consumers.
He proudly says the nail lacquer “is still second to none.”
The strategy revolutionized the nail business. OPI,
which is celebrating its 30th anniversary, now sells
more than 60 million bottles of nail polish every year in
more than 100 countries. By the time Coty Cosmetics
purchased OPI last December, the company had more
than 30 patents and was an established industry leader.
George, who describes his personal philosophy as
“fashion, family, food, and fun,” likes meeting people:
He can often be seen manning the OPI booth at trade
shows. His philosophy also includes spending time on
his philanthropic interests; he generously supports a
variety of charities both here and in Israel.
“It’s not in my nature to be unhappy,” George says.
“It’s a special gift I have, which was given to me. But to
be able to give to others—to put a smile on someone’s
face—that’s what makes me happiest in life.”
It’s not so much about
having your name
up there in big letters.
Capital projects appeal

The Philanthropic Spark
Not resting on their laurels,
Josh and Lisa Greer are
taking a break from
successful careers to prepare
for the next big thing—
and maybe help find a
cure for inflammatory
bowel disease.
Entrepreneurs
on Hiatus
L
isa and Josh Greer are taking a moment, taking stock. Their house is
packed away in boxes, and their twin 5-year-olds, Emily and Jack, are
in their hotel room upstairs. “Basically, we retired,” Lisa says matter-offactly. Wait, what? The Greer duo, movers and shakers since the early Internet
days, at the prime of their influential careers—between them, they’ve
launched in the neighborhood of 10 businesses—are doers. Plus, a glance at
their youthful faces tells you retirement doesn’t seem to fit.
“We’re taking bets to see how long we last,” Josh says with a smile.
He has just stepped down as president of RealD, the technology company
he co-founded that revolutionized the moviegoing experience, giving threedimensional life to Kung Fu-fighting pandas and cerulean aliens. Lisa, a woman
of extraordinary intellect—it almost seems she has to speak quickly to keep pace
with her own rapid-fire thoughts—recently sold Beverly Hills Egg Donation, an
agency that has helped hundreds of people around the world become parents.
The couple says they are ready for their next big move. “We can do more,”
says Josh, whom Lisa describes as “super smart and super determined.”
“Frankly, we think we’re obligated to do more at this point—something
that’s of real benefit to society,” adds Josh.
The Greers have taken a hiatus from their respective careers so they can
pursue what they call an “aggressive approach to philanthropy.” Topping their
list of important causes is inflammatory bowel disease (IBD) research. “In IBD,
[Dr. Stephan Targan’s team at the Inflammatory Bowel and Immunobiology
Research Institute (IBIRI)] is at the cutting edge worldwide,” says Lisa.
The future—and potential end—of IBD lies in genetic research, so the
Greers are funding the world’s first endowed chair in the genetics of IBD.
The research will transform treatment possibilities for painful chronic illnesses
like Crohn’s disease and ulcerative colitis.
J
osh and Lisa plan to be unusually hands-on namesakes. “We don’t want to
simply give the money and say ‘see ya!’,” says Lisa. Josh explains that he
hopes to collaborate with researchers, putting his extensive technology
knowledge to work.
“Bringing in expertise from Josh’s field could be a very powerful catalyst
for our research,” says Dermot McGovern, MD, PhD, recipient of the Joshua L.
and Lisa Z. Greer Chair in Inflammatory Bowel Disease Genetics. “His direct
involvement could take our research capabilities to the next level.”
The next level of IBD treatment will bring important scientific advances to
the clinic. Dr. McGovern, director of translational medicine at IBIRI, foresees
using a patient’s genetic profile to predict the type and severity of his or her
illness. Targeted treatments would follow. “Right from the diagnosis, we will
have a more personalized approach to managing these conditions,” he explains.
Dr. McGovern and other Cedars-Sinai researchers from IBIRI and the Medical

Genetics Institute have contributed to
significant progress in identifying the genes
that increase the risk of developing IBD.
“Understanding the genetics of IBD gives
us insight into the underlying changes within
the immune system that increase the risk of
disease—and, with that, the potential for new
approaches to prevent and even possibly cure
these diseases,” explains Dr. McGovern.
A
nything resembling a cure would
be a much-celebrated win; IBD is
a disease that in its most severe
form drastically reduces quality of life and
may even cause death.
In fact, Josh Greer received something of
a death sentence when he was a young teen.
Diagnosed with Crohn’s disease, “he was told
he wouldn’t live past 50,” says Lisa. Josh
ultimately came to Cedars-Sinai for help. He
has undergone five major surgeries and some
15 minor procedures over the years. “CedarsSinai saved my life multiple times,” says Josh.
Although the research naturally has
personal resonance for Josh, he emphasizes
that he has never once thought that this is
something that is going to benefit him. “I
would love to be able to stop other kids
from having to go through the same kind of misery I had
to go through,” he says.
The opportunity to jump in on cutting-edge genetic
research also speaks to Josh’s long-held interest in
medicine. Lisa remembers meeting him after he sold his
first business and was considering medical school.
“I thought that was so cool,” she says. “It wasn’t ‘oh, I’m
going to buy a Ferrari,’ it was, ‘I’m going to medical school.’”
Ten years later, Josh is almost ready for his next
venture. He’s just back from the Aspen Institute, where he’s
been handpicked for the Henry Crown Fellowship Program.
It’s an exclusive course designed to develop the next
generation of community-spirited leaders. Josh has two
years to create a do-good leadership project—an effort
that dovetails perfectly with his entrepreneurial background.
The Greers have already passed down to their
children a passion for positive action and doing what’s
right. Their 25-year-old daughter, Sasha, works with the
American Jewish World Service, pursuing health and
justice in the developing world, and college-aged Darrow
teaches youth courses in wilderness survival.
Tomorrow, Josh and Lisa will move the youngest
members of their family, the twins and teen daughter
Halley, into their new house. Boxes will be unpacked,
along with ambitious plans. Josh affectionately calls Lisa a
force of nature, but what they’re both too humble to say is
that, together, they are simply a force to be reckoned
with—even in “retirement.”

CATALYST FALL 2011
Saving the World
One Life at a Time
W
hen Jordan Bloch was 13, his close friend and role model, 17-yearold Matthew Silverman, committed suicide. “Matthew was like a
brother to me,” Jordan says. “I wore his hand-me-downs, we went
to Dodgers games together, and I wanted to be just like him when I got to
high school. He was a math superstar, a science brain, captain of the cross
country team, and an overall good person,” Jordan says.
The tragedy affected Jordan profoundly. At the funeral, he made a vow to
himself and to Matthew’s family: He would
lead a fight against suicide. “I needed to do
something for Matt. Suicide is a drastic and
permanent action, and I hated the pain it
caused everyone.”
Once you’ve met this fast-talking,
inquisitive teen—now 17 years old himself—
it comes as no surprise that Jordan is still
keeping his promise. He admits it was a
bold goal for a seventh-grader to set. He
faced significant hurdles along the way—
some of the biggest deep within himself.
Jordan found the perfect fit for his
mission: TEEN LINE, a confidential helpline
for teenage callers run by specially trained
teenagers at Cedars-Sinai. TEEN LINE
volunteers answer calls, respond to message
boards, and even text messages from
adolescents seeking help with relationships,
drug abuse, physical abuse, eating disorders,
bullying, and thoughts of suicide.
During Jordan’s training, a young girl
caller insisted no one could help her and
suicide was her only recourse. As the teen
listener handling the call carefully calmed
her down, Jordan had to walk away. The
conversation made him physically and
emotionally sick.
“I didn’t expect it to stir so much
emotional trauma,” Jordan explains. “But
it did.”
He left TEEN LINE that day, feeling
defeated. He didn’t think he could ever
handle being on the other end of the suicide
hotline. He felt he had let down Matt,
to

himself, and everyone at TEEN LINE. “My Plan A was
trashed,” he says, “and I didn’t have a plan B.”
Five months passed. Jordan went back to Elaine
Leader, PhD, co-founder and driving force behind TEEN
LINE, and told her that he still wanted to help, though
they both knew it couldn’t be through the hotline.
“I was thrilled he came back because I knew he had
it in his heart to do something to prevent suicide and
just needed to find the right avenue,” Dr. Leader says.
Jordan came up with a plan. Knowing that teens
liked parties and loved music, he decided to create
an event that would both benefit TEEN LINE and
celebrate Matt.
“I had never even organized a friend’s birthday party,
let alone an event with hundreds of people,” he recalls.
With a handpicked executive team that included his twin
sister, Alexis, Jordan began doing extensive research
on how to stage a great event. He sent hundreds of
e-mails and made at least as many phone calls.
Dr. Leader knew he would succeed. “When
something happens in your life that triggers a lot of
emotion, it empowers you to do things you probably
never thought you could do,” she observes.
Jordan’s story resonated with a lot of people—
including representatives at Guess?, Inc. and Proactiv®,
two of the fund-raiser’s many corporate sponsors.
Even so, securing talent was difficult at first. Jordan
was repeatedly laughed at, hung-up on, and dismissed
as a child.
But tenacity paid off: In August 2010, the
legendary Roxy on the Sunset Strip hosted TEEN LINE’s
inaugural Summer Lovin’ benefit. More than 400 teens
bought tickets to hear favorite LA-based musical artists
DJ Felli Fel and the LA Riots. Between sets, Jordan took
the stage, reminding the crowd that TEEN LINE is there
for any teen who feels depressed or alone.
Jordan more than tripled his $10,000 fund-raising
goal while helping spread awareness about teen
suicide. The next morning, he received an e-mail from
Matthew’s father, Ron. It read:
Jordan—Some people save the world by saving
one life at a time. You are on your way.
Harriet Posner isn’t afraid to fight. A litigation specialist at one of the
world’s top law firms, she dealt with her colon cancer diagnosis three years
ago the same way she manages her career: with poise and unshakable
determination to come out on top. In recent years, she’s been adding new
passions to her busy life, including horseback riding—which quickly went
from a hobby to a competitive sport. And now she has a new calling:
champion for cancer research.
A new
perspective
on cancer
Not all cancers are created equal. Colon cancer is much
more treatable than most cancers, for example. While
we’ve seen refinements and progress in chemotherapy and
other approaches, my hope is that one day, all cancer will
be as treatable as mine was.
Following
the leader
As a cancer survivor, I want to know that the best and
brightest minds continue to be involved in cancer
research. Dr. Steven Piantadosi, director of the Samuel
Oschin Comprehensive Cancer Institute, is brilliant
enough to streamline the big-picture fight against cancer,
and humble enough to collect and nurture the talent
needed to accomplish his vision.
Letting go
I am the type of person who is virtually incapable of
allowing people to assist me. I even wanted to drive myself
to and from my first chemotherapy session. I am so
appreciative of my friends who wanted to help and who
made me realize that it was important to them to help me
get through that period.
Secret to
success
When people with different skill sets and knowledge bases
work together, the patient—or client in my case—gets
the best possible outcome because of the synergy of the
collaborative expertise. It took a group of people with
their own specialties to get me healthy again.
Getting
back on
the horse
I started riding horses in my early 40s. It’s a very Zen-like
experience for me: I can’t be focused on anything else. I
rode my horse, Corinna, often while I was going through
chemotherapy, and, when I wasn’t in treatment, I was
able to compete. Riding takes me away from everything
stressful in my life and I like the competitive spirit of it.
It’s a testament to Cedars-Sinai that they were able to get
me well enough to do the things I enjoy most in my life.

E
very year, Cedars-Sinai
celebrates National Volunteer
Week with a series of luncheons
thanking those who give so freely of
their time and effort on behalf of the
Medical Center and our patients. This
year’s theme focused on kindness—
something all our volunteers have in
abundance and share with patients and
families through their generous actions.
Barbara Leanse, director of Volunteer
Services, called each volunteer “an
expert at Healing from the Heart.” She
addressed the full room of volunteers
in their signature light blue coats and
said: “In a world that is forever
changing, the one thing that can remain
constant is how we treat other human
beings. Every time you put on your
volunteer uniform and walk through
the doors of the hospital, you are
changing the world for the better.”

lana Meer started volunteering at
Cedars-Sinai when she was just 14 years
old. She recalls being so nervous before
walking into patients’ rooms that she would
often have to pause and take a deep breath.
“It’s hard not knowing what’s behind the
door, but you have to put your own feelings
aside, because it isn’t about you,” she explains.
Elana recalls one of the times she opened the
door to a patient’s room and found the man in
the bed appearing listless and uninterested in
company. “When that happens,” she says, “I always
have a mental struggle over whether to leave the
patient in peace or do what I came to do.”
The patient’s legs had been amputated, and
Elana saw he was hooked up to every imaginable
machine. After a moment’s hesitation, her bubbly
personality took over and she began singing
“Tomorrow” from the musical Annie. This is a
go-to selection for Elana. “It’s a happy song, and
it can remind people that there is a future to
look forward to,” she says.
After she left, the nurse soon called her
back into the room. “The man had a tear
running down his cheek and he uttered a soft
‘thank you,’” Elana says. “It was one of the most
meaningful experiences of my life. While I was
singing, I had no idea if I was having any impact,
and to discover that I had made a difference in
this patient’s day was amazing.”
A volunteer in the Music for Healing
program, Elana is one of the 430 teens who
readily give up a few precious summer hours a
week to volunteer at the Medical Center.
“These teenagers are like little sponges,”
says Barbara Leanse, director of Volunteer
Services. “You can put a teen in any area of
the hospital and they will soak up all of the
necessary information and adapt. They are strong
and compassionate, and this is a real learning
opportunity for them.”

very humbling to learn
what each individual has

F
or 17-year-old Demetrius Gutierrez,
who volunteers in the Department of
Neurosurgery, the commitment has
reaffirmed his goal to become a neurosurgeon—
a dream he’s had since preschool. Although
much of the work he does is clerical, Demetrius
also gets to look at high-tech brain scans, learn
about innovative treatments in the field, interact
with patients, and shadow doctors.
“When you actually get to see your desired
profession first-hand, you experience both the
positive aspects—like patients who are cured—
and the negative aspects, like the 20-hour
surgeries that may not be as successful as you
would have hoped,” he says.
Ambitious and thoughtful, Demetrius has also
learned a valuable lesson in how to treat patients.
“You have to treat everyone with respect,” he says.
“Some patients have everything and some have
nothing, but they’re all here for the same reason.”
A member of the volunteer department’s
Teen Advisory Board (TAB), Demetrius was
recently training new applicants when they came
across a patient who was visibly mentally unstable.
“I explained how to handle this type of
situation and emphasized that no matter who we
are dealing with—a patient, a renowned doctor,
or someone in the cafeteria—we have to treat
everyone the same way,” says Demetrius.
TAB, coordinated by Kelly McVeagh in
Volunteer Services, is a group of 18 to 20 teens
who take on the extra responsibilities of
planning events for the teen volunteers, staging
fund-raisers, and acting as the voice of the teen
community at the Medical Center.
“We couldn’t handle the incoming teens
without their help and support,” says Kelly.
“For example, they decided the teen orientation
training was too boring, so they revised it by
coming up with comedic, interactive skits to teach
the do’s and don’ts of the hospital.”

T
AB President and founding
member Jasmine Saeedian
helped plan a Hollywoodthemed party to acknowledge the
teens for their hard work. She was
also instrumental in organizing a
toy drive benefiting the
Department of Pediatrics and is
now a driving force behind TAB’s
newest venture, the Welcome
Program. Teens on this committee
spend their volunteer time
circulating throughout the
hospital, greeting people and
asking if they need help with
anything from directions to
information. In a sense, they act
as ambassadors for the Medical
Center. Jasmine has helped people
locate their parked cars, walked
people to appointments, and lent
an attentive ear to visitors awaiting
loved ones who are in surgery.
“No matter what our specific
role is, we’re all working together
to help the hospital grow and
succeed,” says Jasmine. “The teen
volunteer program teaches me
about collaboration, about
working toward a common goal,
and about life.”

“Art lifts our spirits and, for that reason, we are so
happy that the Cedars-Sinai community can now
enjoy ‘Molecule Men.’”
Sondra and Marvin Smalley
The Smalleys’ gift of “Molecule Men” can be
viewed outside the Steven Spielberg Building.
Artist Jonathan Borofsky was fascinated by this
theme because, even though humans appear
solid, we are actually composed of a molecular
structure that is mostly water and air.
