H ave you ever considered that whilst we live in the ‘now’, pretty much everything we experience or plan for today is what we or somebody else has decided should happen in the future? Sure, there are things we cannot really control, like natural forces or greater global economic changes, but somewhere along the line our actions have steered us on the path we find ourselves today. There are thousands of these crossroads we are driving on, all leading us to the ‘now’ in the future, and our life can change for the better or worse depending on what we or somebody else has decided when coming up to one of these future intersections. One example of a group of people who have taken the wrong path at a crucial junction is the young men who we recently met at a YMCA Bridge Project fundraising breakfast. This project aims to rebuild the lives of young offenders who have been in youth custody by empowering them via support and employment to take the right path when at the crossroad, reinforcing to me even more how true these sentiments appear, both professionally and personally. There are many forms of gambling, both positive and negative, but there is one particular gamble we all take in life and that is placing our bets on selecting the correct path for our future to achieve success and experience that elusive, sweet now moment. Consider the many different approaches individuals use when deciding which ‘road’ to take. There are the decision makers, who just drive straight ahead and risk it all, and then there are the deep and meaningful thinkers who spend a huge amount of time evaluating which way to go. I am sure both styles have their positives and their negatives, however, dwelling 4 evolution excite your senses on things too much presents a fertile ground for indecisiveness. Obviously, indecisiveness slows down the world and slows down your life whilst time still continues to tick away. The more you think about these crossroads steering us into the future, the more you realise how important a swift but well thought through decision will be. BMW has adopted this approach with the implementation of Project i, which is tasked with making zero-emission mobility possible. You can read about Project i in detail in this edition of Evolution, but Project i is a crossroad BMW had to take now to be at the forefront of electromobility in the near future. BMW as a global premium automotive company has taken many successful roads along its drive into the future. Our product is going from strength to strength – we are constantly reducing fuel consumption whilst at the same time increasing performance. BMW continues to increase the level of standard features to the entire product range and, furthermore, provides a choice of options, ranging from total luxury to the most innovative technology applications, such as head-up display, which displays your speed and other vital information onto the windscreen, or even park assist in the new 5 Series, which searches for a suitable car park and then, once you decide to move in, the car parks itself into the space. No more scratched wheels. Our parts driver, Ian, was facing one of these swift decision-making moments a few months ago when he felt some chest pain just before he ventured into his local supermarket. He told me he was very confused and battling with his thoughts; should he just do his shopping and then see a doctor or see a doctor before doing his shopping. He decided to visit the hospital first and found himself on the operating table only hours later undergoing major heart surgery. You never know, but my guess, and Ian’s guess, is that had he gambled and decided to do his shopping first, it would have been his last visit to the supermarket. We gambled too when we continued with our expansion plans despite being in the middle of the global financial crisis (GFC) and we gambled when we decided that we would keep every employee regardless of the severe financial pressures we found ourselves in. Of course, costs are important to contain as much as possible, but my philosophy has always been if costs rise, revenue and gross profit need to rise at the same or higher level. I find it far more rewarding to focus on the business growth than how to choke my business by cutting costs. So far we have done things right and, even though the GFC forced us on a slight detour, we have now adjusted the future route to bring us back onto the positive future path. The future we are planning will not just be great for us and the 170+ employees of the Doncaster Motors Group; it will also be very special for you, our clients. The next 12 months will be challenging as our Doncaster outlet undergoes major upgrades while our business must continue as usual. Our brand new Service Centre will open its doors late this year, effectively doubling our service capacity. We will deliver our customers and staff a new era in the BMW automotive retail experience. Your decision to take the Doncaster BMW Road into the future with us is more important than ever. Ingo Reisch evolution excite your senses 5 Message from BMW Managing Director Stavros Yallouridis L ife is a marathon, not a sprint race; a test of endurance where foundations are more important than top dressing. BMW as a company has always understood this. This partly explains why we are still here today, an independent company that takes pride in what it delivers and takes care in how it delivers it. Back in the 1930’s, BMW unveiled the 328 Roadster, a two-litre, two-seater sports car that was powered, of course, by a straight six-cylinder engine. This car was very successful in competition, achieving many significant race victories. None was sweeter or more convincing than the 1940 Italian Mille Miglia. A BMW 328 Touring Coupé won this arduous and potentially treacherous 1,600km dash. To celebrate the anniversary in 2010, an immaculate BMW 328 Touring Coupé won the retrospective running of the event. BMW won another endurance race this year, at a somewhat more frenetic pace. A team of BMW GT2 cars completed 154 laps of the 25km Nordschleife circuit at the Nürburgring 24-Hours, well ahead of some determined pursuers. These victories, 70 years apart, underline some very important facts about BMW. To win an endurance race you must understand the task ahead, employ skilled and talented engineers, utilise the best materials possible and anticipate the unexpected. Then you must test your ideas against the reality of the road. The BMW experience in endurance racing says a lot about our road cars. They are built to withstand different road surfaces, varying climatic conditions and to perform at their peak over the long run. To this end, BMW has just opened a new Energy and Environmental Test Center in Munich where five test chambers can reliably replicate climatic conditions as diverse as a chilly -30 degrees Centigrade to a burning +45 degrees Centigrade, as well as simulating driving flat out at 4,200m above sea level. Cars that can cope with all this should not only be able to survive our local driving conditions here in Australia, but they could probably win an endurance race as well. Stavros Yallouridis Energy and Environmental Test Center, Munich 6 evolution excite your senses evolution excite your senses 7 BMW News BMW 3.0 CSi premieres at the BMW Welt Munich > In July, a 1972 BMW 3.0 CSi completely restored by the BMW Classic Center’s new Customer Workshop was handed back to its owner at BMW Welt. There was a twofold cause for celebration: the BMW Classic Center was pleased at having successfully completed its first full restoration since opening and, secondly, BMW Welt marked the first occasion on which a classic BMW – rather than a brand new car – was delivered to a customer. BMW Classic’s Customer Workshop is a response to the growing desire among numerous BMW enthusiasts to own an authentic vehicle that is as true as possible to its original state and in the best possible condition. Grand Introduction to the BMW Four-Door Coupé Concept Beijing > Combining the comfort of a Gran Turismo with the aesthetics of a high-performance sports car, BMW revealed its latest design – the Gran Coupé at Auto China in Beijing. Although officially a concept, the Gran Coupé’s styling suggests it could join BMW’s model range in the near future. It has a long wheelbase, short overhangs, vaulted bonnet with an aggressive, upright grille, a set-back cabin and coupé-style roofline. At almost 5m long, the Coupé sits between the 5 Series and 7 Series, however, it is 100mm lower than a 5 Series. If the Gran Coupé goes into production it could share some of the new engine technology available in the 5 Series and 7 Series. If nothing else develops from this BMW Concept we can at least speculate that the front and rear styling may be a direct preview of what we can expect of the 2011 BMW 6 Series. The BMW M5 ends its production Munich > After five years of successful global sales, the BMW M5 (E60) has ended its production lifespan with a new record high. The BMW M GmbH produced a total of 20,548 of this high-performance V10 sports car. This record result is a further chapter in the success story of a remarkable automobile, which reaches back as far as the year 1984. Twenty-six years ago we saw the launch of the first BMW M5 – this also marking the birth of the high-performance saloon segment. 8 evolution excite your senses The BMW 3.0 CSi’s owner wanted the vehicle transformed into showroom condition and its four-speed manual gearbox to be converted into an automatic, something that had previously been done only with two prototypes of the BMW 3.0 CSi. Based on close collaboration with the BMW Group Archive, which provided the relevant documentation, the ‘large Coupé’ underwent an authentic conversion process. It was fitted with an automatic transmission from a BMW 2.8 CS. The refit and complete overhaul of the vehicle required months of research and countless hours of manual labour. The experts at the BMW Classic Center not only had to repair substantial bodywork damage, but also iron out technical and electronic defects as well as thoroughly overhaul the interior fittings. The vehicle is now in A1 condition. Hollywood comes to Doncaster BMW Melbourne > In July, Ashton Kutcher visited Melbourne to promote his new film ‘Killers’. Whilst here, Ashton could be spotted around the streets of Melbourne in a BMW X5 provided by Doncaster BMW. To win a signed photo of Ashton, email [email protected] by 30 October 2010 and tell us why you are Ashton’s biggest fan. BMW Motorrad Six-Cylinder Technology Munich > Since BMW Motorrad presented the Concept 6 in autumn 2009, the six-cylinder in-line engine featured in it has captured the imagination of many motorcycle fans. With BMW, six-cylinder in-line engines have stood for fascinating engine technology in automobiles for over seven decades, in a way which is unique among brands. In the near future, BMW motorcycles will also be available with an internally developed six-cylinder in-line engine. With the BMW K 1600 GT and the BMW K 1600 GTL, BMW Motorrad is penetrating a whole new dimension in the touring world. Both motorcycles stand for a supreme, impressive and equally distinctive appearance, awakening a desire to travel upon first sight. BMW goes socially worldwide Munich > Effective immediately, the latest BMW press releases from 27 countries and regions worldwide in 14 languages are available through the company’s Facebook profile, BMW Group View at www.facebook.com/bmwgroupview. The ‘Press’ tab opens up an interactive world map where users click on a country to navigate to the latest news from that region. The application gives users access to the latest news items from any country in the local language. There is also a direct link to each country’s national Press Club. BMW Group View allows discussion of a wide range of subjects within the community. The integration of press and PR work into this new media channel is in line with the BMW Group’s objective of presenting information online in a current way. evolution excite your senses 9 BMW Technology Parking is a breeze Surround View supports you when you park and manoeuvre in tight spaces by showing you a bird’s-eye view of the area around the car’s sides and rear on screen. Two cameras integrated in the side mirrors enable 270-degree visibility – no excuses for minor accidents anymore! Eyes on the road Internet has gone auto-mobile A worldwide first among automobile manufacturers, BMW offers you genuine Internet access on board. When your vehicle is stationary, you can conveniently surf the Web. In vehicles with Rear Seat Entertainment Professional, passengers in the back can also surf the Net while the vehicle is moving. Internet access is gained through the owner’s personal mobile phone and is transferred to the vehicle’s system via Bluetooth. Head-up Display is available in the latest 5 Series, including the Gran Turismo, as well as the 7 Series. This system projects selected information onto the windscreen within the driver’s immediate field of vision. The Head-up Display on the windscreen significantly reduces the chances of exceeding the speed limit and the driver does not have to take his eyes off the road. Passive safety The all-new 5 Series has an incredible feature; an active bonnet that enhances pedestrian protection. The area in front of the windscreen is automatically raised by 60mm in the event of an accident with a pedestrian. Night vision The second generation of BMW Night Vision, available on the new BMW 5 Series as an optional extra, sets new standards in avoiding accidents when driving at night. The main feature is a thermal imaging camera fitted at the front of the car. 10 evolution excite your senses evolution excite your senses 11 BMW ActiveE Project i The race towards zero-emission mobility. M egacity…no it’s not a new iPhone app that builds virtual cities; it is a new brand of the BMW Group that in 2013 will bring to market a zero-emission urban car for the world’s metropolitan regions. It’s currently under development as part of Project ‘i’, which launched in late 2007 at the direction of the Board of Management BMW AG. Project i is tasked with making zero-emission mobility possible and is recognition of the company’s responsibility in addressing climate change, the growing scarcity of resources and increasing urbanisation. The United Nations forecasts the proportion of the world population living in towns and cities will rise to 60% by 2030 and will reach 70% in 2050. To remain as the leading global luxury automotive brand, BMW must stand at the forefront of technology as governments legislate towards zero-emission modes of 12 evolution excite your senses personal transport. Between 1995 and 2009, BMW EfficientDynamics had already achieved a reduction in the CO2 emissions of the entire BMW vehicle fleet by almost one third but, in the long term, EfficientDynamics will be vehicles powered by forms of energy derived exclusively from renewable sources. Project i is the most forward-driven project to date and is all about maximum sustainability. A small but dynamic team of experts is at work within the BMW organisation without constraints and preconceptions. The project is not brand specific and the Megacity Vehicle is the most visible outcome of this approach. Project i advancements are currently being tested in the MINIE and the BMW ActiveE Concept Vehicle, which are both an adaptation of a vehicle originally designed to be driven by a combustion engine. The outcomes of this testing will flow into the development and refinement of the Megacity Vehicle. The MINIE, an all-electric MINI Cooper, was featured in detail in Evolution Edition 13 and, since mid-2009, has been undergoing field testing with 600 models on the road in the US, UK and Germany. The MINI E is not only setting new technical standards; with an average driving range of 150km in everyday operation and maximum power of 180kW, it has also pioneered new ground as part of the BMW Group’s alternative drive development program. Importantly, the drivers are reporting the 150km daily driving range is not a restriction on their current driving habits, nor is the charging time. However, the interior space has been seen as a compromise due to the battery storage, which is what the BMW ActiveE is testing to overcome. BMW ActiveHybrid presents a perfect combination of electric motor and internal combustion engine, supported by the latest lithium-ion batteries and coordinated through technically mature hybrid management. The BMW ActiveE Concept Vehicle provides four full-sized seats and boot capacity of approximately 200 litres, thanks to improved integration of the electric drivetrain components. The motor specially developed for this all-electric BMW has a rated output of 125kW and 250Nm of torque. Energy is supplied from the all-new lithium-ion batteries, which give a range of approximately 160km in everyday use. The electric powertrain components are a pre-production test version of a powertrain designed for the Megacity Vehicle. Delivering a much larger speed range than with conventional hybrid vehicles, BMW ActiveHybrid prides itself on lasting and sustainable mobility based on sheer driving pleasure. An innovative vehicle concept and equally innovative MINI E drivetrain technology are now coming together in BMW’s concept ActiveHybrid X6, 5 Series and 7 Series. BMW ActiveHybrid is a revolutionary form of intelligent energy management, which still allows the driver to experience a passionate, exciting and above all unique driving experience. Although the MINI E and BMW ActiveE have pioneered the way, they do not and cannot exploit the full potential of electromobility, which is what the Megacity Vehicle will do. The Megacity Vehicle has a newly developed drivetrain and a revolutionary vehicle architecture that combines rigorous lightweight design with optimal space efficiency and maximum crash safety. The compact electric drivetrain creates opportunities for new interior configuration options and functionality, as well as greater design freedoms, so will also appeal to a new clientele. One great advantage of electromobility lies in zero local emissions. Since electromobility involves electric current rather than fuel being converted into propulsion, no climate-harming gases are created during the journey. If the energy to drive the vehicle is obtained from a renewable source, from wind or water power, electromobility is climate-neutral and conserves natural resources, since even in generating the energy needed, no CO2 reaches the environment. “The Megacity Vehicle will radically alter the motor industry as we know it.” Dr Robert Reithofer In electromobility, the weight of the car will be a decisive factor. There is a close correlation between low vehicle weight and range in electric cars. For this reason, carbon fibre-reinforced materials will make up a large share of the materials used in the Megacity Vehicle. This also marks the first time BMW will use carbon fibre in series production on a large scale. The ultra-light yet high strength composite CFRP (carbon fibre-reinforced plastic) plays a significant part in the materials mix and will feature in the BMW range in the near future. Electromobility is still just at the beginning of its development, and the greatest challenge is clearly the development of the energy storage system. “The Megacity Vehicle will radically alter the motor industry as we know it. The BMW Group is currently the only company that will be launching a volume production vehicle on the market that features carbon fibre-reinforced material,” explained Dr Robert Reithofer, Chairman of the Board of Management of BMW AG. “We were among the first manufacturers to pick up on the trend towards electromobility and to act accordingly,” Reithofer added. W hen the first BMW X3 was launched in 2004, a new era in prestige, medium-segment four-wheel-drive vehicles, or Sports Activity Vehicles (SAV) as they’re known in BMW circles, had begun. From October this year when the all-new BMW X3 makes its public debut at the Paris Motor Show, the bar will be set even higher this time around. This new BMW X3 (F25), which is to be released onto Australian roads in early 2011, takes the successful formula of the original X3 (E83) and expands on it – literally. The new model is noticeably larger, measuring 83mm longer and 28mm wider. Perched 14mm higher off the ground than before and with a longer wheelbase, up 15mm to 2810mm, you would be forgiven for thinking the new X3 has grown considerably heavier as well. Not so. The new X3 weighs around 20kg less thanks to the extensive use of aluminium in its construction. Now that’s progress. On the styling front, there is no question the new X3 comes from the ‘X’ 16 evolution excite your senses family. Both its big and little brothers, the established X5 and the compact X1, have had an obvious influence in some of the key design elements of this new X3. The X5’s wide, tough stance is evident, as is the contemporary styling language from the X1. BMW wants the X3 to appeal to those seeking a mid-sized, premium SAV that conveys not only all of the traditional state-of-the-art BMW strengths of elegance and agility, but also an aesthetic that flaunts its own unique style. That would be the design brief nailed then. Two models that will be offered here at launch are the xDrive20d and xDrive35i. Both of these models feature two ultra-modern power units. The four-cylinder turbo diesel of the xDrive20d develops an impressive 380Nm of torque and 135kW of power, which exceeds that of its predecessor by 5kW. At the same time, average fuel consumption in the European Union test cycle has dropped by 14% to 5.6 litres/100km. High performance with fuel efficiency characterise the engine featured in the BMW X3 xDrive35i. BMW TwinPower Turbo technology, High Precision Injection and as an option for the xDrive20d. Compliments of continued advancements in BMW EfficientDynamics technology, Auto Start-Stop function is offered for the first time with the automatic transmission. When stopped in traffic, the engine is automatically switched off. As soon as the driver takes his or her foot off the brake pedal, the engine restarts. BMW’s third generation xDrive all-wheel-drive system also makes the grade in the newest X3, offering improved stability-control and a 40/60 front-rear torque-split that is now controlled by an electronically actuated multi-plate clutch steplessly varying torque between the axles. The strut front and multi-link rear suspension arrangement that featured in the updated version of the outgoing X3 has been revised and upgraded to include optional Electronic Damping Control. This system incorporates electronically variable shock absorbers that automatically stiffen under heavy cornering or when manually selected by the driver. The new X3 is a worthy successor to one of the best sellers in the BMW line-up and sets new standards in the category established by the original in 2004. Next year can’t come around quick enough. Generally known 22 evolution excite your senses for its environmental and sustainable practices, it’s a small community of like-minded people who campaigned to have their town become the first ‘Waste Wise Village’ in Australia and forgo the use of plastic bags. Our target for the morning was the Koonwarra Store for breakfast – an historic ‘one-stop-shop’ that boasts fine food, regional wines in the wine bar, a providore specialising in local Gippsland cheeses and produce, as well as an emporium stocking some exclusive high-end labels and accessories. Built in the late 19th century, many of the building’s charming original features are faithfully preserved. Starting out on the drive and not knowing the best direction to head off in, the Sat-Nav was left in charge to do the talking. Not too far down the road it becomes very obvious that this quaint country destination is going to be the perfect place to enjoy the new 5 Series, as it offers some of Victoria’s best driving roads along the journey. Highway speeds and sweeping curves are the order of the day and are all taken with ease in the new BMW. The car’s handling and braking are remarkable, giving this rather large saloon the feeling of a more compact, sports-orientated vehicle. Upon arriving at the Koonwarra Store we are greeted by Dyson Hoggett, Sales Manager and Sommelier of this family run business. It’s immediately apparent that this must be a regular retreat for many of the locals as Dyson is kept busy acknowledging those who enter by name. With drinks seemingly on the table before we barely had the chance to take a seat, anticipation had started for the breakfast that we were about to order and for the quality of the food we had heard much about. The menu reflects perfectly the current season with regionally sourced produce. When it comes to sustainability, the chef strongly supports organic, low-impact suppliers, practices and products. Like all good menus tender, the Big Breakfast was chosen. It has to be said that even Matt Preston would be hard pressed finding fault with this dish. The presentation, the aroma and the taste all lived up to the hype. Simply having a meal at the Koonwarra Store just isn’t enough. Coming away with some delectable goodies such as raspberry jam and lemon butter meant our trip to the Koonwarra Store could be savoured long after we returned home. If you have a spare day in any upcoming weekend, this beautiful part of Victoria is well worth getting the BMW out of the garage for. P rior to entering the automotive industry, Craig Hendrickse’s experience was as extensive as it was varied. As a result, Craig gained a great deal of knowledge about salesmanship, communication, selforganisation and team motivation; skills which he constantly relies on every day as the Used Vehicle Sales Manager at Doncaster BMW. Having commenced his career with Doncaster BMW in March 1999 as a sales consultant, Craig has since built a reputation based on providing each and every customer with first-class service. In return, this attribute, along with his integrity, has allowed him to establish lasting relationships with his clients. A classic example of this is Craig’s relationship with Paul Dabb, a respected and loyal customer of Doncaster BMW. Paul Dabb, Company Director of Barry Plant Real Estate Berwick, first met Craig Hendrickse nine years ago when he was looking to upgrade from an Audi A4 to a BMW 528i. Since then, Paul has gone on to buy several other BMW’s from Craig, including a 330Ci, 645i, 650Ci, 650i, X3 and X1. Currently driving the BMW 650i, Paul had considered other luxurious sports cars ranging from Porsche, Jaguar and Mercedes. However, he opted to upgrade to the BMW as, in his opinion, it was the only one that ticked all the boxes when it came to style, comfort, prestige and dynamic performance. Also working within a highly competitive sales environment, Paul too realises the importance of providing exceptional customer service at all times and believes that Craig, like himself self, goes the extra mile to ensure his customers are satisfied. We invite you to experience the ultimate in customer service by calling Craig Hendrickse for all your BMW needs. If, however, you’re currently looking to buy or sell real estate, Paul Dabb would be only too happy to assist and provide you with equally impressive customer service! One was a cheap pair which looked okay on the outside but wouldn’t last the distance. The other, a more expensive pair, would last for years and never let him down. Was he prepared to go that little bit further and do something he would never regret? Now, this simple but brilliantly effective philosophy could be used in many facets of one’s existence. It could also be used when making one of the biggest decisions in life – the purchase of a new car. So we come to one of the newest stars of the BMW stable – the X1. This time around, in my job as ambassador for Doncaster BMW, I got the chance to check out an X1 xDrive23d, – a turbo-charged diesel that uses a miserly 6.3 litres per 100 kilometres. As I have stated previously in Evolution, I personally prefer diesel performance to petrol power. Diesel just suits my driving style perfectly. In the compact Sports Activity Vehicle (SAV) market, there’s plenty of competition out there when it comes to vehicles of this size, but to pay homage to what Allan Jeans was on about, not all cars are created equal. The X1 is a cracker, a Jack (or Jill) of all trades. Swift and sleek enough to perform any day-to-day duties but with more than enough speed, space and grunt to take on the bigger tasks. Ingo Reisch, Managing Director of Doncaster BMW, is understandably very proud of the new X1. On occasion, I have heard him enthusiastically spruiking the merits of this new model, detailing the efficient engine design through to the multi-skilled remote control. Ingo’s enthusiasm for the X1 was not lost on my wife, who fell in love with it immediately. “It’s just perfect for my needs,” she hinted rather bluntly! My X1 23d has features from nose to tail. For example, headlights that automatically switch from normal to high beam that also provide better illumination in poor conditions. Rain sensors, vicinity lights in the door handles, multi-function steering and personal profile on your remote control. A Harman/Kardon surround system boasting 11 high-performance speakers. You name it, you can get it in the X1. Just grab what I like to call the ‘BMW Menu’ and choose any extra you want. Performance is certainly not lacking either. It has a claimed top speed of 205km/h and sprints from zero to 100 in just 7.3 seconds. That shames even some so-called “sports” cars. Even though the X1 is a scale down in size from both the X5 and the X3, it has plenty of storage space in the back and certainly gives a sense of a much larger car from the driver’s seat. You may not sit as high off the road as its sister cars, but it still gives you the feeling of safety and dominance. So there you have it. BMW’s offering for the SAV market. If you want a car for all seasons then this is it. This is one car you’ll look back on and say, “I’m glad I paid the price”. NB. In the 1989 grand final, Hawthorn indeed paid the price. It went on to win one of the toughest, most brutal and most spectacular grand finals the game of AFL has ever seen, defeating Geelong by one goal. Steven Quartermain Spec check: Since the launch of the BMW X1 in April, three further model variants have been introduced to the all-new BMW X1 line-up with two petrol engine models; sDrive18i, xDrive25i and the diesel sDrive variant; sDrive20d. Choosing a BMW X1 with rear-wheel drive means you will be able to enjoy typical BMW agility and driving pleasure – namely, precise handling, flawless cornering ability and incomparable dynamics. Plus, the lower weight of the sDrive system compared with xDrive makes the BMW X1 – already an outstanding performer when it comes to fuel economy – even more efficient. W hen Melbourne doctor Paul Kertes bought his first BMW ten years ago, he had no idea it would be the catalyst that ignited such a passion for the German marque and one that would eventually lead him to a very special car. With new enthusiasm after purchasing his first BMW, Paul joined the BMW Car Club of Victoria in 2000 and was soon infected by the club’s ebullience and passion for the brand. “At various concourse and drive events I was taken with some of the older classic BMW models and, when the opportunity to own one came along, I had no hesitation.” That first classic BMW is still housed in the Kertes’ garage today, a fully restored 1974 2002 tii. Some other very desirable beauties that also reside on the premises are ‘his and hers’ daily drivers, including a current model E92 M3 Coupé and an E46 325Ci Convertible, as well as a modified 1983 E30 325i ‘weekend warrior’. The latter is raced as part of the BMW E30 Racing Group in Victoria. There is one car, though, that Dr Kertes holds the keys to that really stands out – a stunning 1986 M3 Coupé. This striking and very rare machine is an original E30 M3 from the batch of the first 5,000 cars built for homologation purposes 36 evolution excite your senses in September to December 1986. A basic conversion to right-hand-drive was performed by an importer in Newcastle, NSW (BMW only ever made this model in left-hand-drive), but after driving it home to Melbourne in 2005, Paul decided to refine the conversion. “I spent months getting the details right. Things like the wipers were still on the wrong side, the mirrors were wrong and even the headlights needed to be changed over.” Last year, the bodywork was treated to a full respray, bringing the car back to showroom condition and meeting Paul’s understandably high expectations. When asked what it is about his classic BMW that he admires so much, Paul detailed, “I love the history of the model, the racing pedigree, how it sounds and most importantly of all, how it handles. The feedback it gives you through the steering wheel and the driver’s seat is simply awesome.” Andrew van der Mei Classic Facts: The E30 M3 was BMW’s homologation special designed to compete in European touring car racing. Improved aerodynamics, a high – performance 2.3 – litre four-cylinder engine pushing out 150kW and race-tuned suspension all played a part in making the M3 unbeatable on the track. Although Paul has made a few minor modifications to his car to improve driveablility, he has been careful in choosing all original E30 M3 parts. These include a front suspension strut brace, an air box and steering wheel from an Evo II E30 M3, as well as 16 – inch alloy wheels from a Sports Evolution (Evo III) E30 M3. Interestingly, Peter Henry, a famous British motoring writer from that era, originally owned these wheels. evolution excite your senses 37 Saffire Resort Wine Glass Bay Discover more of Tasmania Long lauded by locals as ‘God’s Country’, the Freycinet Peninsula is a world of pristine, white-sanded beaches and sparkling turquoise waters to explore. My wife Pam and I thought that with Nicole in her first year of university and Nathan completing year 11, this could be our last chance to have a family vacation. We decided to take up a long-standing offer from a good friend, Harry, to visit his home island of Mytilene (Lesvos) in Greece. With a personal tour guide locked in for Greece we thought we would make the most of our holiday and include a little sightseeing along the way. We landed at Athens airport to a o o summery 36 C ; it was only 10 C when we left Melbourne’s winter. We’d chosen to stay at The Hotel Plaka, just at the base of the Acropolis. The hotel had a rare roof top bar and outdoor lounge area to enjoy watching beautiful sunsets – a favourite spot of ours most nights after dinner. 46 evolution excite your senses We spent our days walking the cobblestone streets, going to the Ancient Agora and looking around the local shops. Climbing the Acropolis to the Parthenon is amazing and you just stand in wonder – how did the ancient Greeks manage to build this massive marble monument? A visit to Hadrian’s Arch and The Temple of Olympian Zeus was, in some ways, more impressive than the Parthenon. The sheer scale of the temple was mind blowing and the attention to detail in the columns was beautiful. We walked on to the Hippodrome (or Panathenaic) stadium that has hosted athletic games for centuries. More recently, after a complete restoration, it’s where the first modern Olympics were held in the 1870s. It was an amazing feeling to walk on the track where elite Olympians have run and competed, and then to sit in the marble thrones where so many royals and Exotic Spice Market, Istanbul, Turkey dignitaries have sat in the past. Our son Nathan, who is history mad, was in a paradise of ancient times! As well as sightseeing, the shopping was brilliant with boutique art, jewellery shops, craftsmen and even the oldest ‘flea’ market in Athens just around the corner. The Greeks like to have ‘siesta time’ from midday until mid afternoon and then all the stores are open again until very late every night. The Greek people are very friendly and we enjoyed lots of laughs with the locals. The many restaurants around the area were fantastic and we had no trouble finding new food to try each day. The kids discovered their favourite daily fix for lunch was ‘pita gyros’ which is a small pita bread filled with sliced meat, salad, creamy mustard mayonnaise and chips; not exactly diet food but yum! It was time to move on and we set off for a short stay in Istanbul, Turkey, which is a quick flight away. It is another ancient city with an amazing history. We did not know really what to expect, but were blown away by how good it was and how much fun we had. Istanbul is a city that crosses two continents. The Bosporus separates Istanbul’s European side from its Asian side and it was only in the 1970s that two massive bridges were built to join the two areas. All previous commuting was only by ferry. Here we visited ancient Roman walls, aqueducts and obelisks, the Christian church of Aya Sophia and the Byzantine Chora church. We also saw the Muslim Blue and Suleymaniye Mosques – the architecture was amazing. To escape o the 38C heat we took a trip under the city into the enchanting, cool underground world of the Basilica cistern where water was originally stored for the Palace of Byzantium. A visit to Istanbul is not complete without a visit to the Topkapi Palace, home of the Ottoman Sultans, complete with treasury, parklands and of course a harem. A museum area now houses a fabulous collection of jewellery, jewelled armour, furniture and period clothing. Shopping in the Grand Bazaar was really fun with all its gold, clothing and homewares. The spice bazaar was also a delight to the senses with all the beautiful aromas, treats to eat and vibrant colours. We could have been restaurant owners in Turkey; if we had taken up the offers from local shop keepers to trade our daughter Nicole (who’s blonde and so a rarity in Turkey), as their wife, for their establishment. Much to Nicole’s horror we decided we should wait and see if we could get at least two restaurants or maybe a cake shop! Since the pace of the trip had been pretty ‘full on’, it was now time to slow it down a little and head to the beautiful Greek Island of Mytilene (or Lesvos), just 12kms off the Turkish coast. We were staying about an hour’s drive from the capital, which is also called Mytilene, in the northern coastal village of Petra. The Blue Sky Hotel is a lovely boutique hotel. With a view of the monastery built on top of a rocky outcrop in 1747 from our Snow Desert in Dubai, UAE balconies and the pool just below, you could not ask for more. We quickly settled into island ‘holiday mode’ with breakfast by the pool at around 11am, lunch at around 3pm, then a siesta or lazing in the pool and dinner anytime after 9pm. One evening Harry and his family (owners of the hotel) put on a special Greek BBQ night that ended up as a Big Greek Party! There was a Greek fire dancing show and everyone was involved in the Zorba dance. There was plate smashing, dancing on the bar and it was great fun for all. Unfortunately, all good things must come to an end and our time on the island had flown by. We only had one more stop before heading home: Dubai (United Arab Emirates). Set in the desert sands is a vibrant city with cutting-edge architecture with Arabic flair. Arriving in mid-summer at midnight it was a o comfortable 40 C and daytime temps o reached over 48 C ! We avoided the heat and the outdoor souks (or markets) o by staying indoors to keep cool, -2O C cold to be exact. What else would you do to cool off in a desert country but go to the snow? Believe it or not we spent our afternoon throwing snow at each other and sliding down toboggan runs! Flying home we could look back at what a great holiday it had been. We know we have really whet the appetite of Nicole and Nathan to travel more and also how much we want to continue our travel diaries in the future. T he MINI Countryman bridges the gap between the MINI Clubman and a modern Sports Activity Vehicle and is guaranteed to be the most versatile MINI vehicle yet! Due to hit our shores in early 2011, this car stands out through its unique look – it’s powerful, robust and versatile in all its features and appearances. Manyfeatures that are famouslyMINI will continue to be mirrored throughout the Countryman, like the iconic roofline, hexagon grille and large headlights integrated into the hood. Larger body dimensions, greater ground clearance, a powerful stance and window graphics extending around the entire car all to help to create those unique MINI proportions. MINI’s new all-wheel-drive system – called All4 – will be available as an option. It utilises an electro-hydraulic differential to split torque between the front and rear wheels. MINI says 50% of the engine’s torque is distributed to the rear wheels in normal driving, with up to 100% possible in difficult traction situations. With all the extra space this new segment offers, you can imagine there is a lot more fun to be had on the inside and the Countryman boasts some innovative design features. For example, the central display and air vents are surrounded by coloured rings and the rear seats provide flexible space with a 40:20:40 split. What’s really cool is that there is an unconventional connection thatexists between the front and rearseats called the MINI Centre Rail. Instead ofa predictable centre console, the Centre Rail is a compartment which extends from front to rear, opening new options for integrating all kinds of storage boxes, cup holders, external audio devices, mobile phones and other comfort features. Now for the engines! A total of five engines will be offered, two of which will be diesel. The One D Countryman has a maximum torque of 215Nm and releases only 115g/km of CO2. The Cooper S 1.6-litre petrol engine will now combine turbo-charging with direct injection and fully variable valve management. The features typical of everyMINI, apartfrom the characteristic design of the car, are its thrilling, very agile handling and premium quality, which is quite unique in the small-car segment. MINI Cooper S Countryman has a truly outstanding level of efficiency, with fuel consumption in the European Union test cycle of 6.3 litres/100 kilometres and a tiny CO2 rating of 146 grams per kilometre. It accelerates from a standstill to 100km/h in just 7.6 seconds and has a top speed of 215km/h. The MINI brand sent out clear growth signals through its presence at this year’s Auto China 2010. The MINI lineup will expand to six models in 2011 when the company’s new Coupé and Roadster models go into production – the ideal conditions for continuing the MINI success story.
