In the fall after WWII, an ad man and some Island businessmen had the “brain child” of an idea to increase passenger ferry usage and extend the tourist season for Martha’s Vineyard. They would create, no less, a fishing tournament. They called it the Martha’s Vineyard Bass Derby. That first Derby in 1946 had more than 1600 participants. The tournament fished only bass until 1954, when the consistency of bluefish in our waters made sense to put them in the Derby. However, it wasn’t until 1956 that the organizers felt comfortable enough to change the name of the Derby to the Martha’s Vineyard Striped Bass and Bluefish Derby. It is quite obvious that the idea worked and they must have known what they were doing, because for the last 65 years, fishing folks of all ages, genders and nationalities have altered their lives to come to Martha’s Vineyard to be part of this magnificent event. As we embark on this 65th Derby, it is ever so important to protect our natural resources, knowing how fragile our ecosystems can be. At a moment’s notice, floods, oil spills, and habitat damage can change our lives and that of the fish that swim in our oceans. The Derby Committee and I are grateful to all of you each year as you continue to demonstrate that you, too, share that same commitment to protect our precious environment and that of this beautiful Island. We are very supportive of our sponsors and their products. Without them this tournament might not exist as it does, so we encourage you all to take a serious look at their products and the high quality that they represent. As you all know, next year, the state of Massachusetts will implement a state saltwater licensing program for recreational fishermen and women to improve the data collection process necessary to support our state fisheries as well as to assist in the maintenance of saltwater public access points. It will then become necessary for Derby participants ages 1660 to register with this state licensing program. Please read the regulations to see how they may personally affect you. I hope that this is an exciting and memorable tournament for all of you. Thank you for being a very important part of the 65th Derby. Be safe, wear a life jacket, and remember to be respectful of our Island community. The enduring success of this unique event is due to the tremendous support of our participants and sponsors. In 2009, we were happy to see a modest (4%) increase in derby participation and we awarded nearly a quarter of a million dollars in prizes. As I write this, it is too early to tell what will happen to registrations in 2010, but I do know that the support from our sponsors remains unbelievably strong. There will be no shortage of prizes this year as both our traditional as well as several new sponsors have joined the Derby family. There is a lot to be said about this level of commitment, especially in light of our current economy. Quite simply, the Derby would not be “The Derby” without this support. But our success is also tightly linked to your participation. We know folks are cutting back on recreational activities, like fishing, in today’s economy. Therefore, we are especially appreciative of the support from Derby participants. In return, we remain committed to preserving the Derby’s dual role as a high quality fishing event as well as a community-based organization that works hard to maintain the quality of life on the Vineyard. Whether you are a year-rounder, a seasonal resident, or a visitor, it is clear that this island is a special place. Your participation in the Derby helps to support our efforts, whether in the form of granting college scholarships, donating to environmental causes, or contributing to youth organizations. We thank you. The 65th Derby marks my 24th year collecting catch data (for my real job), my 19th year on the Committee, and my 2nd year as Derby Chairman. But 2010 marks a bittersweet moment in my tenure with the Derby and as a member of the island community. For both professional and personal reasons, I am moving off the island with my family. On the professional side, I am taking on a greater role with the Division of Marine Fisheries, heading up the Diadromous Fish, Recreational, and Large Pelagics Fisheries Program for the agency. As such, my new responsibilities require that I be closer to those that work under my supervision. I won’t be far, but I won’t be here. With this major life change, I Derby Chairman & Fisheries Biologist Greg Skomal is really into his work. say goodbye to a community that has been integral to my personal and professional development over the last 24 years. For this, I thank those that have made my life here on Martha’s Vineyard so special. I will truly miss this place I’ve called home for so long. The Derby is one of those gems in the crown of this great island and I hope to remain part of it. Like any great institution, is a dynamic entity that needs to be maintained, tweaked, and adjusted every year to stay successful, to support the community, and to keep you coming back. Fluctuations in the economy, the ever-changing tides of fisheries management, and the forces of nature keep us on our toes — there is no auto-pilot. I would like to personally thank the committee for streamlining the planning of the 65th Derby and making my second and final year as Chairman so enjoyable. Although not much has changed since last year, please read your Rules Brochure carefully and pay particular attention to the minimum sizes and boundaries. By abiding by the rules, you help the Derby Committee to manage a successful tournament that is fair and enjoyable for everybody. Please show appropriate respect for the environment, including the proper discard of used fishing line. Carry a tape measure with you and measure your fish accurately. Please release fish carefully, as their survival depends on how you handle them. If you plan on donating your catch to our fillet program, please keep it iced. Join us in our commitment to wear life vests. Above all, practice safety and good sportsmanship. Lastly, don’t let last year’s relatively poor fishing deter you. Best of Luck, to All . . . These men and women meet throughout the year — as soon as one Derby ends, work begins for the following year’s edition. Only because of the energy and efforts of the Derby Committee does the Derby exist as one of the oldest, largest, and most popular saltwater fishing tournaments in the country. A love of the island, an interest (or obsession) with fishing, and an appreciation for tradition are common threads that bond these individuals in their service on the Committee. She has the capacity for significant future growth. Emily’s independence as a learner is mirrored in her choice of extracurriculars. She has long been involved in gymnastics, long distance running, and figure skating, as well as work, so her after school activities have been community-based. Recently she was involved as an employee in the setting up of an innovative small saltwater aquarium. She obtained a mentorship position at Woods Hole Oceanographic Institute in the second half of her senior year, where she has been involved in marine research. Growing up on an island provided Emily with the opportunity and first hand experience to become a student of the ocean. Emily has also spent considerable time in the Caribbean, where her passion for marine biology and the sea has been strengthened. Michael Williams transferred to the Martha’s Vineyard Regional High School to complete a work study program at the Martha’s Vineyard Shellfish Hatchery. Michael started his high school career in the automotive classroom at Upper Cape Regional High School. He spent two years in that program and then decided to enter into the Dual Enrollment Program through Cape Cod Community College his junior and senior years. While attending Cape Cod Community College, Michael took a Biology class which sparked his interest in furthering his studies in the area of Marine Biology/ Aquaculture/ Environmental Science. He has always been a fisherman and last year he held a commercial lobstering license after serving as a stern man on a lobster boat for five years. Michael is passionate, conscientious, and excited about attending Salem State in the fall to study aquaculture. 65th Derby Souvenir Booklet · 2010 | 19 The 2009 Derby . . . by Gregory Skomal I Above average fishing, Below average catching f not for the simple joy of getting on the water, the camaraderie, the competition, the incredible prizes, the scholarships, and the relentless stream of fish stories, the 2009 Derby would have been a bit lackluster. Although not as bad as 2008, the fishing in 2009 was indeed below average. Again bluefish were readily available (mostly for boat fishermen) and the bonito and false albacore decided to make a better showing, but striped bass remained hard to find. In 2009, there was a modest increase in participation as the number of anglers increased 4% from 2,724 in 2008 to 2,844. The following synopsis and accompanying figure show how Derby participants fared in 2009 compared to the previous 22 years. Bluefish (Pomatomus saltatrix): From 1990 to 1996, bluefish landings declined from a 22-year high of 1,700 fish to a low of 665 fish. Since then, landings have rebounded to levels comparable to those in the late 1980’s. In 2009, bluefish landings (1,239) decreased 14% relative to 2008 and this can be attributed to fewer fish landed by shore fishermen. When looking at long-term trends in bluefish landings, a number of factors related to effort must be considered. First, Derby participation has risen steadily from a low of 1,809 anglers in 1994 to current highs, an increase of over 70%. Moreover, Derby fishermen could not land striped bass from 1987 to 1992, so more participants were likely targeting bluefish, resulting in more bluefish landed during this period. Both factors, which are difficult to quantify, can render the longterm interpretation of bluefish abundance less meaningful. Nonetheless, bluefish landings appear to reflect similar trends in population biomass estimates generated by the current stock assessment (conducted by the Atlantic States Marine Fisheries Commission), which shows a general increase in population abundance estimates since the mid-1990’s. On average, shore fishermen have accounted for about 26% of the annual bluefish landings over the last 23 years. In 2009, shore fisherman weighed only 15% of the bluefish catch. The average weight of bluefish from 1987-1997 was well in excess of 8 lbs and hovered around 8 lbs from 19982003. However, big bluefish have been lacking in recent years (2004-2008) as the average weight has fluctuated between 7.2-7.7 lbs during this period. In 2009, bluefish were generally bigger in 2009 as the average weight was 8.3 lbs, much closer to the 23-year average of 8.9 lbs. Daily landings indicate that bluefish were available throughout the event. Atlantic Bonito (Sarda sarda): Over the last 23 years, bonito landings have fluctuated between 110-696 fish annually. Prior to 1995, bonito landings were higher (ranging from 323-696 fish) and this can be partially attributed to more effort being directed at bonito because striped bass was excluded from the Derby at that time. Since 1995, bonito 20 | 65th Derby Souvenir Booklet · 2010 landings have been depressed, largely due to a conspicuous absence of shore fish. Despite the decline in bonito landings in 2008 (285 fish), 28% more bonito (365) were landed in 2009. Although shore fishermen on average accounted for 25% of the bonito landings over the 23-year period, they landed only 2-12% from 2003-2009; shore fishermen caught only 33 fish (9%) in 2009. Taking into account the increase in Derby participation in recent years, there is a clear 15-year trend of depressed bonito catches. Without a stock assessment for this species, it is difficult to interpret the cause of this decline. This trend and the lack of shore-caught fish indicate that large numbers of bonito have clearly not moved into nearshore waters in recent years. The average weight of bonito has also been relatively low since 1994, ranging between 5.1-6.9 lbs for this period. The average weight of bonito landed in 2009 falls in this general range (5.8 lbs). The availability of bonito to participants over the course of the five week event has fluctuated dramatically from year to year. In 2001, 2002, 2004, and 2007, the bulk was landed during the month of September; 2009 was one of these years with 72% taken by the end of September. In 2003, 2005, and 2006, bonito catches were sporadic with pulses of fish taken throughout the Derby. In 2008, 50% of the bonito were taken during the last 10 days of the event. False Albacore (Euthynnus alletteratus): Trends in false albacore landings are difficult to interpret and should be viewed with caution due to rule changes designed to reduce landings of this species, which is not considered palatable. Since 1995, daily prizes have not been awarded for false albacore, thereby reducing the incentive to land fish. In 1998, a minimum length of 25 inches (63.5 cm) was established and this reduced false albacore landings in subsequent years. In 2005, Derby organizers made efforts to further reduce landings by imposing a bag limit of three fish (for the duration of the event) coupled with the minimum size. Despite these restrictions, some information can be derived from the landings data. In 2000 and 2001, this species was not available to shore fishermen, but this changed dramatically in subsequent years as both shore and boat fishermen were equally successful. In 2006, minimum size false albacore were not consistently available and this is reflected in the landing of only 107 fish, which is the lowest catch since 1993. Although landings plummeted 67% in 2008 (168), they rebounded 46% in 2009 to 246 fish. Of these fish, 43% were taken from shore, which is on par with the 23-year average (46%). Since 2003, the average weight of false albacore has fluctuated between 8.3-9.3 lbs and the 2009 average falls on the low end of this range (8.3 lbs). In 2009, 68% of the false albacore were landed during the first half of the Derby, but this may be the result of tournament imposed bag limits. Striped Bass (Morone saxatilis): From 1985 until 1992, the striped bass was eliminated from the Derby prize structure for conservation purposes. In 1993, the species was slowly re-introduced into the Derby with limited prizes until 1995 when it became a fully eligible species with a minimum size of 38 inches. With the decrease of the legal minimum size in 1997, the derby committee dropped the minimum size to 32 inches. Hence, the effective time series for striped bass landings data spans only 13 years. After a 26% decline from 1997 (771 fish) to 2001 (570 fish), landings rebounded 30% to time-series highs in 2003 (813 fish) and 2004 (800 fish). From 2005-2007, striped bass landings fluctuated between 689 and 745 fish. However, landings declined 47% in 2008 to 392 fish, which represents the lowest landings since full re-introduction in 1997. In 2009, striped bass landings remained low at 423 fish, a modest 8% increase. Since 1993, shore fishermen have landed about 40% of the striped bass, but this has increased in recent years (58% in 2008, 53% in 2009). The average weight of striped bass has ranged from 19.0-23.2 lbs since full re-introduction and the average weight of fish landed in 2009 (19.0 lbs) was the lowest in the time series. Striped bass were available for the duration of the 2009 event as landings were consistent. 65th Derby Souvenir Booklet · 2010 | 21 Final Results 2009 Grand Prize Winners Eastern Boat - Mike Seeger Chevrolet Silverado - Will Pate FLYROD DIVISION AWARDS CONTINUED... But, over four days in October 2009, six men and women, all veterans of military service, happily embraced the Derby and found themselves embraced by the Vineyard community wherever they went. A conversation with Army Sergeant Dale Cherney of Wisconsin one evening provided a different perspective on the usual Derby gripes and a sobering reminder of the price being paid by servicemen and women around the globe to keep our country safe. Derby fishermen, me included, have been known to complain when we have not caught a fish or become irritated because of something some other fisherman did. In the larger scheme of things, we have it very good. 30 | 65th Derby Souvenir Booklet · 2010 On Monday evening the first night of his stay, sitting in a comfortable chair against the backdrop of a Menemsha sunset, Dale Cherney — who lost his left leg and right eye in a rocket attack on Camp Liberty in Baghdad while on his third tour of duty — said he was just happy to be on the Vineyard. “I am just hoping to have fun,” Dale said. “It’s not about the fish, it’s about the company.” It was a sentiment all of the members of the group of veterans shared. Catch a fish? Sure they all wanted to catch a fish, but mostly they were just happy to be fishing. Their trip had come together quickly. It was arranged through Project Healing Waters (www.projecthealingwaters.org), a volunteer organization that uses the therapeutic and healing powers of fishing to help veterans in their recovery and life. The five retired military men and women from the Togus Veterans Administration Hospital in Augusta, Maine, and Dale, still on active duty and undergoing treatment at Walter enjoyed Derby’s by Nelson Sigelman Captain Tom Langman netted a fish for Army veteran Peter Sargent. Reed Medical Center in Bethesda, Maryland, accompanied by volunteers Dr. Tamar Martin-Franklin, project coordinator of Veteran Anglers of New York, the local chapter of the Healing Waters, and her husband arrived on the Vineyard that Monday morning. The group traveled to the Island at the generous invitation of Bob and Sarah Nixon, owners of the Home Port Restaurant, the Beach Plum Inn, and the Menemsha Inn in Chilmark, and their eight-year-old son Jack, an avid fisherman, who conceived of the idea. The result was the creation of “The Beach Plum Inn American Heroes Saltwater Challenge.” A host of volunteers that included Menemsha charter captains, Betsy Larsen of Larsen’s Fish Market, and the Derby committee pitched in along with the Nixons. Many other Islanders alerted by word of mouth and a story published in The Times, also helped. Doriana Klumick, Beach Plum assistant manager, who was at the heart of the organizing effort, said a Cape Cod Express delivery truck pulled up to the inn the Friday before the vets arrived. She was not expecting a delivery. The driver ran inside and said he had read about the veterans visit in The Times and wanted to donate to the effort. He handed her a $20 bill. On Monday evening the Nixons hosted a reception and dinner at the Beach Plum Inn. The venue provided a postcard view of Menemsha Harbor and Vineyard Sound out to Gay Head. Terri Perry of Gorham, Maine, was anticipating fishing the next day with veteran charter captain Scott McDowell, one of several captains who had volunteered their time. “I’m in it to win it,” she told me. I asked what branch of the service she had served in. “There’s only one,” she said with a bright smile, “the Air Force.” A communications specialist, she had learned to fly fish in Alaska. The hospital recreational therapist introduced her to the program in Maine where she lives now. She does not let her wheelchair get in the way of fishing. “I get thrown around quite a bit, but I’m oaky with that,” she said. Retired staff sergeant Butch Freeman of New Gloucester Maine served in the Army for 27 years until his injury-forced retirement. Monday night Butch sat across from me enjoying a steak and a glass of wine. “What brought me to this place?” he said repeating my question. “A very bad day.” He added, “I was in Mosul when the tent exploded.” He paused, seemingly expecting me to acknowledge with a glimmer of recognition what was for him a fact, but had for him and I suspect many others long since faded into the endless news cycle. “A suicide bomber,” he explained. I did a little research on Butch’s definition of a bad day. It is worth remembering the next time you hear someone complain about a bad day of Derby fishing. It was three days before Christmas, 2004. Butch was with other members of the Maine Army National Guard’s 133rd Engineer Battalion sitting down for lunch in a mess tent at a U.S. military base in Mosul, Iraq. The blast from a suicide bomber struck almost directly in the center of the dining hall where an estimated 400 American and Iraqi soldiers and civilian contractors were eating. More than 20 people were killed and at least 60 were wounded. Married with two daughters and two grandsons, Butch said his recovery has been a long process. “I think I’m getting there,” he told me and gave credit to his wife of 24 years. Dale Cherney and Bob Nixon hold Dale’s bluefish. 65th Derby Souvenir Booklet · 2010 | 31 Dr. Tamar Franklin, Terri Perry, and Peter Sargent with the catch of the day. Butch Freeman held up a bonito at the weigh station. He stumbled across fishing as an activity to get him outdoors. The trip to Martha’s Vineyard was his third fishing trip arranged through the hospital’s recreational therapy program. His injuries forced him to leave the Army, a fact he regrets. “It was my whole life,” he said. Asked what it was he liked about the Army, he thought a minute and said, “I liked pretty much everything about it. I grew up there.” On Thursday morning I joined the group for breakfast prior to their departure from the Island later that day. Much of the talk was about the fish they had caught and the unforgettable reception they received when they walked into the Derby weigh station to weigh in their fish. Former Vietnam era medic Kattrina Sangillo was beaming over a catch of 15 fish in two days. Pete Sargent, a Vietnam era Army infantry veteran, said every charter captain was different. He was also very intrigued about something he learned while fishing off Gay Head. “I found out about the clothing optional beach,” he said. “My goal was to have fun and I exceeded that.” Stanley Munson went fly fishing with captain Charlie Finnerty. He told me, “I want it said for the record that the blind guy never got his line tangled.” Then he added, “But I did hook Charlie in the nose.” Charlie took the injury in stride because he already had a doctor’s appointment scheduled for later that day. Army Staff Sergeant First Class Dale Cherney went fishing with captain Buddy Vanderhoop. He had won a fourth place pin proudly displayed on his Derby hat for a 6.12-pound bonito weighed in two days earlier. Now he was getting ready to return to Walter Reed Hospital, he told me over breakfast. Dale has been in the hospital since October 14, 2007. He was hoping to be home within one year, he said. Home is the small town of Mosinee, Wisconsin. “I’m going to go home and do nothing for a while.” The trip to Martha’s Vineyard provided Dale with his first ferry ride of any type and first opportunity to fish in saltwater. He said he was very glad to have the opportunity. It would be easy to think that the men and women we see in news reports on combat patrols are the only folks in harm’s way. But every member of the military signs on for a 32 | 65th Derby Souvenir Booklet · 2010 degree of risk, irrespective of the assignment Dale was with the 376th Finance Management Unit on his third tour of duty. He was, relatively speaking, in a safe area when Camp Liberty suffered a mortar attack on Oct. 10, 2007. “Three of us were coming out of the chow hall,” he said. “We were heading to our vehicle when the siren went off and someone said, ‘not again.’ I turned around to look at the person who said not again. There was a clicking sound and a flash of light and I remember being on the ground with direct pressure on my neck.” Dale went in and out of consciousness. He remembers being wheeled down a hallway with the sounds of a helicopter in the background. He remembers nothing between that moment and two months later when he woke up at Walter Reed. He had lost his left leg below the knee and his left eye, his spleen had been removed and he suffered from various abdominal injuries. Dale told me he had been in Iraq during two previous tours in seemingly far more precarious places. He noted that when he was injured he was in a seemingly safe place. “Fate has a funny way of dealing with stuff,” he said without a hint of irony. Recovering at Walter Reed he latched onto fishing as a way to get out of the hospital, meet people and engage in some physical activity. Retired Navy Capt. Ed Nicholson, a fisherman and hunter, who founded Healing Waters, suggested that Dale make the Vineyard trip. Over eggs, toast, and coffee in the elegant Beach Plum Inn dining room, Dale told me he joined the military in 1984 because he wanted to serve the country and he did not have money for college. “I was a poor person,” he said, “ and the only other direction I had was a factory job and I wasn’t interested in a factory job.” He said the Army had been a wonderful experience. He had traveled the world, seen the pyramids, Budapest, Panama, Germany, and served on UN missions. Now he walks with a cane and has one brown eye and one blue eye, or two brown eyes depending on his mood. “I have some fun with it,” he said. “Most people are too polite to say anything.” Knowing what he knows now, I asked, what did he have to say about his decision to enter the military. “I wouldn’t change a thing in the world even with the injuries,” he said. “I was just in a bad place at a bad time. I can’t be angry so I just have to deal with what I have. I just have limitations now. I can’t do things the way other people do them so I have to find other ways to do them.” I turned to Butch, seated next to me. What had his military experience meant to him? “The military is my life,” Butch said. “I think of the Army as a family.” He said he took one thing away from Healing Waters. “It is okay to be a survivor. Because that is half the battle, because your friends died right next to you,” he said. Dale and Butch noted that each has a special date coming up. It is the day each commemorates his survival and the deaths of military comrades. “You call it your alive day,” Butch said. However, to participants of the Martha’s Vineyard Striped Bass and Bluefish Derby, this means business. The old salty dogs stand shoulder to shoulder on the sandy shore with the rising sun glaring off the steel blue ocean right next to me. I am the rookie, confident that I can match them cast for cast, hour for hour; though the veterans think I will be no competition. No competition, until I reel in a monster false albacore off eleven pounds. I show them that I can astonish those around me, and even myself, at this triumph. I have been participating in this fierce contest for over ten years now, and the same thrill occurs when fighting to get a fish to shore. There are so many things flying through your mind while battling a fish in the undulant water: reel down, pull up, don’t let the line break, keep the rod tip up, maintain the right tension . . . will it be heavy enough to weigh in? I have grown up on and off boats and shores, fishing with my dad, who has taught me the techniques one needs to land “the big one”. However, fishing the Derby is not just skill, it is that secret combination of knowledge and luck that brings 34 | 65th Derby Souvenir Booklet · 2010 success. That one September morning my skills and fate brought me that sought-after gold pin. It was one of those nights as a little kid where you are so excited and are planning to get up at 5 a.m. and have an adventure with your dad. The next morning, while I did not really want to leave that warm and cozy bed, something made me get up anyway. Bundled up and buckled in my seat in the truck, my dad and I went out to find the spot for good fishing. We chatted about the wind, the tides, and rhythmically rolled over the dunes as we 4-wheeled out to the prime fishing location. We pulled around the last turn and finally reached the coveted spot where cars were lined up miles down the beach. Despite being taught a great deal about catching fish, safety was always emphasized by my dad. Since I was young, he thought it would not be safe if I went onto the jetties, so he set me up with a fishing pole and a lure on the beach. The algae and barnacle-ridden rocks could cause anyone less than sure-footed some serious injury. Therefore, my spot was relegated to the shore beside the jetties, despite my protests. So I started casting while my dad began to make his way up the rocks. On my second cast I had hooked a fish and the adrenaline immediately started pumping. My mind I raced and my breath quickened. I just knew this was the one. I brought that fish to shore with all my might, skill, and maybe a little luck, too. It was only about 6:30 a.m. and the Derby Weigh Station didn’t open until 8 a.m. The time could not have come sooner. I walked into the rough sawn pine shack, where the aroma of fish permeated out the door. I entered this fishing hall of fame holding my false albacore and wearing a smile, ready to have the fish weighed. Nevertheless, I did not want to get my hopes up, in case it was not heavy enough to earn a place on the Derby leaderboard. My heart was pounding as the weighmaster placed my fish on the scale. To my surprise (and relief), my fish took over first place! My name was on the leaderboard for three weeks and I won a multitude of tackle, a gold pin for my Derby hat — in and of itself a symbol of an unspoken fraternal group, and a gift certificate to a local tackle shop. I purchased my first fishing pole with that prize. Every time I use it, those great memories flood back to me just as the waves flood the slippery rocks. Also, when I transfer my gold Derby pin to each year’s new hat, I am motivated once more. I have learned that everyone is equal in the Derby because it is up to the fish to bite the hook of an old, weathered fisherman, or an animated, youthful girl. One little girl can beat men who have been fishing the Derby for decades, providing there is the right combination of skill and luck. The competition to catch the mysterious treasure below the waves knows no age limit. I can now claim a Derby winner in my repertoire of experiences that take one’s breath away and I am confident that my path will lead me to other trophies in my life. My dad’s dad taught him to fish, and his knowledge was passed down to me and has been put to good use. Not only do I connect to the ocean as I annually participate in the Derby, but I strengthen the relationship I have with my family because this event represents the sharing of knowledge, time, and experiences that are priceless and irreplaceable. Who would have thought a fish could do that? Katharine Wilson is a freshman at the University of Connecticut. In selecting a theme for her college application essay, she settled on a topic to write about: how the Derby has affected my life and shaped me to the person I am today. She explained, “The Derby is a true symbol of honesty and friendly competition and it is what taught me those two valuable life lessons.” 65th Derby Souvenir Booklet · 2010 | 35 Stay Connected Derby Promotion: Then & Now by Wilson Kerr For those who grew up here, the Martha’s Vineyard Striped Bass & Bluefish Derby is woven into the fabric of the seasons and no special promotion or advertising is needed. But, for anglers who choose to travel to the Vineyard and fish the Derby, promotion and coverage drives awareness and can be an important factor, regarding the vitality of the event. The Derby has a long history of using creative promotions to support the event and attract new anglers and sponsors alike. Since we are a registered non-profit run by volunteers, all funds generated support our charitable efforts. Quite literally, the success of the Derby helps support this unique Island community during the fall “shoulder season” and keep our Derby Scholarship Fund viable. This success is not a given and volunteer Derby Committee members attend regional fishing trade shows to encourage people to come to the Island and fish the Derby! Press releases are issued and local and regional newspapers and magazines cover the event, as it happens. Posters and the full-color Derby Souvenir Booklet you are reading right now are printed and distributed to showcase Derby sponsors and convey information. The Awards Ceremony is promoted the same way a concert would be by the crew at Nectar’s and hats and logo apparel are sold to help generate income and brand awareness. In recent years, the Derby website (www.mvderby.com) has kept anglers up-to-date with information and, of course, real-time results. In 2010, the Derby Committee is using some new promotional tools to connect with Derby supporters, via both Facebook and Twitter. The Committee is also using Constant Contact to send email newsletters, with all the latest. Since many anglers carry mobile phones capable of internet (and email) access, these new social media platforms are uniquely well-suited to distribute real-time Derby information. These social media tools also allow anglers to connect with the Derby (and each other) in ways not previously possible. So, how can you get in on the action? Go to our website (www.mvderby.com) and click on the links to Twitter and Facebook on the upper right of the homepage. You also can enter your email address to get the Derby Newsletter. The 2010 Derby Committee appreciates your support and hopes these new social media tools will help better connect us to those who make the Derby what it is. Of course, if you think Twitter is for the birds and you wouldn’t know a Facebook from a Fishhook, just wander down to the weigh station and grab a hot cup of coffee. Inductees must have demonstrated “good sportsmanship, honesty, integrity,” and exhibited a concern for fish and the environment. We are extremely proud of these individuals and the significant contributions they have made to the success of the Martha’s Vineyard Striped Bass and Bluefish Derby. Steve Amaral Steve Amaral fished the first Derby with his Dad, Mother and brother which was a family tradition since he was a young boy. Except for 1956, when he was away serving his nation, he has participated in every Derby. Steve has unselfishly contributed to the success of many Derby winners who he shared much of his fishing knowledge. Steve has been an active member of the Oak Bluffs community for many years. He served for 36 years in the O.B. Fire Department and 23 years as Captain before retiring. He was appointed to the M.V.C. as Representative for the Town of Oak Bluffs during the Commission’s early years. He has been a member of the Rod and Gun Club for many years and has raised a great deal of funding for the Kid’s Trout Derby. 2009 Ruth Meyer Bob Boren MARK LOVEWELL Hall of Fame Inductee Ruth Meyer was the Chairman of the Derby in the late 70’s until 1981. She was the organization’s first female chairman, which should have come as no surprise, as she grew up in a fishing family. Her father owned and operated Larry’s Tackle Shop. Ruth ran Larry’s for many years after her father and continued the tradition of it being the center of Derby information. Ruth was instrumental in securing big name fishing tackle companies as Derby sponsors. Companies such as Penn and Boston Whaler became a major part of the Derby because of her efforts. 70 | 65th Derby Souvenir Booklet · 2010 Bob was a long standing Derby Committee member who worked hard to support the Derby in many ways, but perhaps he was best known for his responsibility for handling the Derby’s raffle of a 4x4 Jeep. For years, the committee’s raffle of a Jeep was the main fundraiser supporting the tournament. At all of the summer events on the island and at winter sportsman’s shows around New England, the committee sold tickets and it was Bob who was always at the center of that effort. Bob’s house was often the meeting place after selling tickets. After events like the Tisbury Street Fair, Bob and his wife supplied the refreshments while the committee totaled the night’s effort. Bob and his Derby buddies spent many summer nights selling raffle tickets on the corner of Circuit Avenue in front of Giordano’s in Oak Bluffs, but it was Bob who was always in charge, making new friends and sharing great fishing stories with the public. Bob was a tremendous ambassador for the Derby. MARK LOVEWELL Kib Bramhall Clayton Hoyle Clayton Hoyle was a skilled rod maker and was instrumental in the creation of the Martha’sVineyard Rod and Gun Club. Affectionately known as“The Instigator” he always offered his opinions and ideas whether asked or not. Several members of the Rod & Gun Club along with Clayton helped foster the idea of an island fishing tournament that later became the Martha’s Vineyard Striped Bass and Bluefish Derby. MARK LOVEWELL A member of the Derby committee for many years, Kib Bramhall is a conservationist, skilled fisherman and distinguished artist. Kib Bramhall has held both Derby and world fly rod records. Most important, he brings a sense of integrity and fair play to the sport of fishing and the Derby. Respected both for his demeanor and fishing accomplishments, he is honored for the example he has set for others over more than four decades of Derby fishing. Serge de Somov Distinguished by his fishing skills, respected as a gentleman, both on and off the beach, Serge de Somov’s four derby victories, three consecutively, were unmatched during the first half century of the Derby competition. Known as the“Mad Russian”and“The Count”, due to his aristocratic European background, Serge de Somov caught the heaviest shore striped bass to claim victory in 1964, 1965, 1966 and again in 1969. Surrounded by an aura of mystery, Serge de Somov earned his place among the legends of Derby history. He is honored for his fishing accomplishments on dark island beaches where the striper fisherman stand and cast! Ruth Hughes Ray Ellis Al Brickman No single individual on Martha’sVineyard had more connections than did Al Brickman in the mid 1940’s. This“Father”of the Derby took these ties in the fishing community…, the business and tourism community, the worlds of journalism, public relations, real estate and transportation, combined them with his deep concern for the welfare of the Vineyard, its people and natural resources, and with a singularity of purpose, yet skillfully and patiently, forged the Martha’sVineyard Striped Bass and Bluefish Derby into existence. This month long event has, for the following four generations of Islanders and our visitors, dramatically improved the quality of life on Martha’sVineyard. Ray Ellis, one of the most renown American artists of our time, has graciously donated his artistic talent to the Derby since 1988. The paintings that he has annually created for the Derby have generated the money to make our scholarship program possible. In addition, he has donated a portion of the proceeds from his book “Fishing the Vineyard.”Through Ray’s efforts, nearly $300,000 has been awarded in scholarships to worthy graduates of the Martha’sVineyard Regional High School. In 1947, Ruth Hughes began her daily reporting of the Martha’sVineyard Striped Bass and Bluefish Derby for the column she wrote as a reporter for the then New Bedford Standard Times. She chronicled the operations of the day, wrote the names of the daily winners on the derby blackboard, kept a running account of the day’s largest fish and recorded for history special occurrences of the day. Ruth was a Derby fixture at the weigh station for 11 years doing just about everything that was needed until 1958 when she assumed the role of Oak Bluffs Town Treasurer until her retirement in 1976. Ruth’s accurate written accounts of those early years of the Derby are now housed in our Derby archives and are the only factual consistent accounts of those DerbyYears. Cooper Gilkes John Crews John dedicated himself to filleting fish during the derby for over 2 decades. He served as the“Official Filet Master” long before the committee assigned a filet master. “Big John”, as he was known, worked both weigh-ins each day with a broad smile and tireless dedication until he was 87 years old. Cooper Gilkes has been an active member of the Martha’s Vineyard Striped Bass and Bluefish Derby Committee for over 2 decades. He was instrumental in the rejuvenation of the Derby in the early 1980’s. He assisted in the successful presentation to purchase the Derby from the Martha’sVineyard Chamber of Commerce in the mid 1980’s. His thoughtful opinions were very helpful in the restructuring of the Derby as it entered its most successful era. Cooper has been synonymous with the Kid’s Derby. His ideas led to the creation of the event that today draws hundreds of kids annually. He religiously catches bait prior to the early morning event and, with the help of his wife Lela, has successfully managed this event since its inception. Ed Jerome At the helm of the Derby, Ed Jerome guided the faltering tournament out of perilous waters and helped build it into a successful and respected institution. As the longtime President of the Derby corporation, Ed Jerome has been a thoughtful and patient leader. Whether through the Derby scholarship program or charitable contributions, he has never waivered in his belief that the Derby exists to contribute to theVineyard community. A fisherman, educator and community leader, he is honored for his extraordinary efforts in making the Derby a truly unique Island institution. 65th Derby Souvenir Booklet · 2010 | 71 MARK LOVEWELL Jerry Jansen Howard Leonard Jerry first started fishing the Derby during the second year of its existence. Jerry has been an avid surf fisherman and is well known to many. His great sense of humor and wealth of fishing stories about the Derby are legendary. Jerry’s book “Successful Surf Fishing” has helped many a beginner with helpful tips. A founder of the Derby and committee secretary for many years, Howard Leonard was an enthusiastic Derby fisherman and tireless volunteer distinguished by his good humor and kindness. Howard Leonard personified the ideals of the Derby and was unstinting with his time, particularly when it involved the young people of the Island. He is honored for his service to the Derby and the community of Martha’sVineyard. Richard Morris Richard Morris founded Dick’s Bait and Tackle in 1969. He loved to fish, but most of all he loved to tell stories about fishing. He never won a prize in the Derby, but many a Derby yarn was spun in his tackle shop about the one that got away by those who congregated there on a regular basis. He enjoyed meeting new people every year and looked forward to each fall knowing the Derby would be starting. The Derby was a major part of his life and he would be very proud to know he was in its Hall of Fame. Stephen Morris Ed Landers Janet Messineo You’ll never hear a negative word about Eddie. He was a great fisherman and willingly shared his knowledge and techniques with the people who fished with him. Who fished with Ed? Every neighborhood kid that he could fit into his buggy. They all have hilarious stories of their adventures with Ed. They say from watching him chase skunks down the beach to carrying his catch back to the car at Squibby. He was a great teacher and respected the rules of life and sportsmanship. Janet Messineo epitomizes the spirit, excitement, and camaraderie of the long history of the Derby. She has been an intricate part of the success of the Derby as a committee member, a participant and as an advocate for children and women participants. For many years, she has created the coveted Derby fish mount trophies with her expertise and skill as a taxidermist for award winners. Janet makes friends with all she comes in contact with. She fishes extremely hard and is constantly on the leader board. Her spirit, sportsmanship and commitment to fishing are unmatched among participants. Stephen Morris has been a member of the Derby Committee for more than 15 years. During the mid 90’s, Stephen was the chairman of the Derby and helped take the Derby to new highs in participation, prizes and activities. Stephen was one of the best Chairmen the Derby has had. His organizational skills, commitment and knowledge of the fishing industry have been his hallmarks. Many of the improved practices used today in the Derby and Awards Ceremonies were suggested by Stephen. Stephen is a well respected local tackle shop owner. Each year, his shop, Dick’s Bait and Tackle, registers the largest number of participants in the Derby. His opinion is respected by the Derby Committee members and his efforts for the Derby this last decade and a half have been impressive. Roy Langley Roy is the longest running weigh master in the history of the Derby. For the last 15 years, he has been the morning weigh master exemplifying the spirit and image of the Derby. He is recognized for his role as the ambassador at the weigh station and the organization and distribution of the Derby’s filet program to senior citizens of Martha’sVineyard. 72 | Don Mohr Benjamin Morton This “Beach Ambassador” can be found fishing the beaches of Chappy from April until November. Don epitomizes what the Derby is all about. This sportsman always has a smile and helping hand for his fellow anglers. He has a deep respect for the resources and environment and without hesitation will gently point out a rule, infraction or abuse of these resources. Don served on the Committee from 1984 to 1991. He was Treasurer from 1985 to 1989 and Chairman from 1989 to 1991. During his tenure as Chairman, the Derby began its transition from the Chamber of Commerce to an independently run event. A derby founding member, and Massachusetts Steamship Lines executive, Ben Morton worked tirelessly in both a professional and volunteer capacity to create a Derby that would be enjoyed by Islanders and visitors alike.A member of the Derby committee for more than 20 years, Ben Morton guided the Derby from its creation and joint sponsorship under the boat line and the Martha’s Vineyard Rod and Gun Club to its later management by the Martha’sVineyard Chamber of Commerce. He is honored for his wisdom, foresight and efforts on behalf of the Derby and the entire Vineyard community. 65th Derby Souvenir Booklet · 2010 MARK LOVEWELL Robert J. Post Greg Skomal Arnold Spofford Greg has been on the Derby Committee for more than a decade and a half. As an official state marine Biologist, Greg was able to guide the Derby with valuable research and insight on various conservation issues and political impact. His research helped us established minimum fish lengths for all fish in the Derby. His research helped us to reduce the mortality rate of false albacore by establishing a size that reduced the number of False Albacore coming to our scales by more than 50%. Greg is a nationally known speaker for his work on sharks and other species, but has always found time to explain a fin from a scale to local Kindergartners. Greg somehow found time from his very busy work schedule to be treasurer of the organization for many years which included paying the bills, preparing the income tax statements, dealing with our accountant and preparing monthly financial statements for the Board of Directors. Arnold Spofford was a member of the Derby Committee for nearly 15 years beginning the the early 1980’s. He was well known for his famous Ballastic Missile and Needle Fish Lures. Every year his wife Ellen and he would fill their living room with parts that made up their lures while putting them together. But“Spof” was known best to us for his vision and forward thinking for the Derby’s direction. It was Spof who created and wrote the first Souvenir Booklets. His stories captured the essence of this tournament and were matched by his photography. Spof was instrumental in the creation of the Ray Ellis prints we sell each year and the Scholarships we now offer to island graduates. Arnold Spofford truly had an impact on the Derby as we know it today. MARK LOVEWELL Bob Post, self described as a“fisherman trapped in the body of a dentist”, was also a gifted journalist, author, Public Health official, Derby member and father, among many other roles. Most importantly, Bob was a connector and chronicler of the living history of the Derby. Happiest when sitting astride a boulder on a Gay Head beach, after fishing into the dawn, conversing with a Jerry Jansen, Kib Bramhall, or another of the fishing denizens of the preceding night, Bob turned these conversations into the critically acclaimed book“Reading the Waters”, which, more than any other source, illuminates and brings to life the wonders and mystery of surf fishing theVineyard and the Martha’sVineyard Striped Bass and Bluefish Derby. The book, its several never published chapters, hundreds of pages of notes and hours of recordings make up a wealth of research material for the future. Helen Scarborough Helen was a fixture at the weigh-in for many years. She was the weigh master and keeper of records many years before the scale became digital and computers replaced the pen and paper. She was known as “mother hen”as she kept the busy weigh-in running efficiently and exciting for young and old. Arthur Winters Martha Smith Martha was the glue at Derby Headquarters, morning and night, for over 15 years. As Weigh Station Manager, she understood fully the intricacies of operating the Derby, and kept it running smoothly. Her dedication to the Derby was demonstrated by her commitment to the event and all it benefited. Martha endeared herself to countless Derby participants over the many years she stood behind the desk at Derby HQ. Daniel Shea For more than 25 years, Dan Shea has been an extremely important part of the success, growth and popularity of the Derby. In the mid seventies, while working as a Manufacturers Representative for the J. D. Keith Agency, Dan was instrumental in obtaining many new sponsors including Zebco which became the Kid’s Day Sponsor for many years. In 1985, Dan and his business partner Joe Nicholas, formed Nicholas- Shea Co., Inc. a rep agency with the Penn Reel Company as their flagship line. Although Penn had been a sponsor prior to this time, their contributions grew exponentially with Dan’s help and dedication to the Derby. For twenty years, Penn Reel Company and many other sponsors that Dan represents have helped make the Derby what it is today. Dan is an accomplished fisherman and a role model in the fishing tackle industry. Arthur was a member of the Derby Committee from 1981-1992. He was part of the new group of Derby Committee members who traveled about New England trying to create a new image for the Derby. At that time, participation was at a very low point and the image of the tournament outside our island shores was less than honorable. Arthur was part of the first Derby sub group that traveled to sportsman shows in Massachusetts and as far away as NewYork. He hawked Jeep raffle tickets at those shows and at all of the islands activities for that decade. And it was Arthur and Cooper Gilkes who gathered bait at 3 A.M. before each Kid’s tournament. During that time Arthur was well known as one of the best Bonito and False Albacore fishermen on the Island and got on the Grand Board many times. His 11 pound Bonito was an island record until just a few years ago. Arthur Winters brings humor to all with his involvement during the Derby. On one occasion, he walked into the weigh station carrying a black violin case waiting in line for his turn. As he approached the scale, he opened the case displaying the tournament leading Bonito to a tremendous roar of laughter. That is Arthur Winters. 65th Derby Souvenir Booklet · 2010 | 73 74 | 65th Derby Souvenir Booklet · 2010 7 L JKW / L QHV 1(: 7KH PRV W GHW DL O HG , QV KRU H DQG 2I I V KRU H 86 )L V KL QJ &KDU W V $YDL O DEO H 1RZ DYDL O DEO H DW \RXU O RFDO PDU L QH HO HFW U RQL FV GHDO HU 65th Derby Souvenir Booklet · 2010 | 75 Martha’s Vineyard Striped Bass and Bluefish Derby Corporation Charitable Giving The Martha’s Vineyard Striped Bass and Bluefish Derby Corporation was created to hold an annual fishing tournament for the benefit of the island of Martha’s Vineyard, and for the funding of college scholarships and charitable causes. In the fall of 2009, Martha’s Vineyard provided the setting, and the Derby provided the experience, for a special group of appreciative anglers. It only happened because of one family’s compassion and generosity. Bob and Sarah Nixon, owners of the Home Port Restaurant, the Menemsha Inn, and the Beach Plum Inn, coordinated with Project Healing Waters, (www.projecthealingwaters.org), a volunteer organization that uses the therapeutic and healing powers of fishing to help military veterans in their recovery and life. Their son Jack, an avid fisherman, deserves credit for the idea. The Nixon family graciously hosted retired military men and women from the Togus Veterans Administration Hospital in Augusta, Maine and Walter Reed Medical Center in Bethesda, Maryland. The trip’s itinerary was highlighted by fishing trips on Menemsha charter boats, which resulted in memorable visits to the Derby Weigh Station. Through providing complimentary registration and awarding special plaques to all participants, the Derby was honored to be a part of The Beach Plum Inn American Heroes Saltwater Challenge. To acknowledge their efforts, the Derby Committee recognized the Nixon family at the 2009 Derby Awards Ceremony with the first edition of the Martha’s Vineyard Surfcasters Association Sportsmanship Award, honoring the true meaning of good sportsmanship during the Derby. At the core of the Derby’s mission is to give back to our community and, through scholarships, provide meaningful opportunities for individuals. We therefore were pleased to be welcomed by the Nixon family and join its effort. The Derby Committee salutes the Nixons for their unparalleled consideration and kindness. On behalf of the entire 2010 Derby Committee Sarah, Jack and Bob Nixon hosted a welcome dinner for the veterans and Derby committee members at the Beach Plum Inn. 80 | 65th Derby Souvenir Booklet · 2010 Celebrating 30 Years Come celebrate with Eastern and their Dealers as they reach their 30 year anniversary.
