Welcome Address
Dear friends and colleagues,
These are interesting times for a pathologist. For well over 150 years our discipline, central in the
practice of modern medicine, has evolved steadily. The last decade, however, announces dramatic
changes in the practice of pathology with the advent of molecular medicine. Those of us that have
been around for a while have heard this story before. Ultrastructural pathology and histochemistry
were announced with fairly similar connotations but in daily practice solid appraisal of morphology
remained a cornerstone in histopathological diagnosis. This exciting and productive interplay
between histopathology, molecular technology and mechanisms of disease will be an essential
element in the 22nd European Congress of Pathology.
Moreover, the congress will be held in the remarkable city of Florence. This Congress will contribute
to the consolidation of our discipline and set standards for its practice for the years to come.
Keynote lectures, symposia, slide seminars, courses will keep you informed as to recent progress.
Platform and poster sessions will allow you to communicate your recent findings to interested
colleagues. An appealing social programme will allow you to refresh old friendships and to make
new ones. The unique charme of this beautiful vity is unresistable, with its outstanding cultural
heritage.
The ESP, the Italian pathologists and the local organisers cordially invite you to attend. The 22nd
European Congress of Pathology promises to be an unforgettable experience.
Prof. Marco Santucci
Congress President
Prof. Fred T. Bosman

on recent scientific and diagnostic advances, Symposia covering selected areas of pathology, Short
Courses addressing new scientific results, practical diagnostic challenges and methodological problems, Slide
Seminars on actual problems of diagnostic pathology, Videomicroscopy Tutorial Sessions (interactive
case discussion with experts), and a special Plenary Session on the “The many faces of the cancer cell: a
pageantry of morphological appearances and their biological significance”.
Main topics include:
• Breast Pathology: novel variants of intraepithelial neoplasia, intratumoral heterogeneity, diagnostic
utility of gene espression profiling, personalised treatment in breast cancer
• Cytopathology: endosonography guided FNA, cytopathology of the cervix, pitfalls on FNA,
cytological–histological approach and ancillary techniques in lung and pleural tumours

heart and vessels surgical pathology, anatomical exhibition on how-to study hearts from sudden
cardiac death

melanocytic lesions, update on adnexal and vascular tumours, pitfalls in dermatopathology
• Electron Microscopy: role in infectious disease pathology, current diagnostic applications in surgical
pathology, pitfalls in tumour pathology solved by EM
• Endocrine Pathology: poorly differentiated endocrine carcinomas, morphology vs. molecular biology
in malignant endocrine neoplasia, unusual/difficult diagnoses in routine pathology, update in genetics
of GI endocrine tumours
• Digestive Diseases Pathology: role of pathologist in targeted therapy, gastrointestinal biopsy
reporting and other diagnostic challenges in GI pathology
• Gynecology Pathology: consultant experience of 25 years: “The mistake(s) I made”, controversial
topics in tumour pathology
• Haematopathology: new WHO classification of lymphomas, microenvironment and
lymphomagenesis
• Head and Neck Pathology: controversial issues in head and neck pathology
• Information Technology In Pathology (Computational Pathology): virtual slides in tissue
based diagnosis, telepathology, web-based continuous medical education, teleteaching
• Molecular Pathology: K-RAS gene in colon cancerogenesis, Cyclin D1 in B-cell neoplasms, role of
MicroRNAs in molecular diagnosis of cancer
• Nephropathology: renal involvement in systemic autoimmune diesases, new insights into the
pathogenesis of renal diseases, diagnostic challenges in nephropathology
• Pediatric and Foeto-Placental Pathology: pediatric tumours, selected perinatal issues
• Pulmonary Pathology: problematic issues in pulmonary pathology, combined diagnostic approach
to lung cancer, occupational and environmental lung diseases, pleural diseases
• Soft Tissue Tumors: recent advances in bone and soft tissue pathology
• Uropathology: from pathogenesis to prevention and therapy of prostate cancer, the impact of
different histological subtypes on the therapy of kidney cancer, from aetiology to prevention of
bladder cancer, unusual/difficult diagnoses in uropathology
• Miscellaneous topics: unusual/difficult diagnoses in liver and pancreas pathology, pitfalls in
neuropathology, history of pathology, teaching in pathology, paleopathology, humoral rejection in
solid organ transplantation, Langerhans cell histiocytosis, the pathologist’s contribution to the advance

General Information
CITY OF FLORENCE
Florence is one of the most beloved cities in the world, an open sky museum famous worldwide. In the
fifteenth-century Florence, a self-governed, independent city-state with a population of 60.000, became with
its writers, painters, architects, and philosophers the cradle of Renaissance culture; Renaissance shifted
mankind into the centre of the known cosmos ad man became its measure. With such relevant philosophical
and scientific inheritance, with its beautiful Mediterranean climate, good and healthy food, and great shopping
Florence it is the ideal place for the 22nd European Congress of Pathology.
CONFERENCE VENUE
Fortezza da Basso
Viale Strozzi 1
50123 Florence, Italy
The Fortezza da Basso is a huge fortress
commissioned by Alessandro de' Medici and built
between 1533 and 1535. The fortress defined as the
"best in Europe" was a military installation until the
nineteen sixties, when it became a civilian area hosting
events with top level services. The complex is situated
near the historic city centre, and just at 5 minutes

European capitals, can be reached in 15 minutes by
car. The Florentine motorway junction is located just
west of the airport.
EASY ACCESS

intercontinental connections.
Florence Airport “Amerigo Vespucci” is only 5 km from the city centre. Bus and taxi transportation is available
between the airport and city centre.
There is also Pisa Airport “Galileo Galilei” served by several international airlines, connected to Florence by a
shuttle train operating every hour. The trip takes approximately 1 hour.
By Train
The new high speed trains conveniently and comfortably connect the central station “Santa Maria Novella” to
Paris, Munich, Geneva, Amsterdam, Vienna, Barcelona, Zurich, Berlin, Copenhagen, London, etc.
Eurostar trains connect Florence with Milan (2hrs and 45 min approximately) and Rome (1hr and 45 min
approximately). The main railway station in Florence is S.Maria Novella which is very near to the congress
venue.
By Car
Florence is centrally situated along the major north-south motorway.
