For well over 150 years our discipline, central in the practice of modern medicine, has evolved steadily. The last decade, however, announces dramatic changes in the practice of pathology with the advent of molecular medicine. Those of us that have been around for a while have heard this story before. Ultrastructural pathology and histochemistry were announced with fairly similar connotations but in daily practice solid appraisal of morphology remained a cornerstone in histopathological diagnosis. This exciting and productive interplay between histopathology, molecular technology and mechanisms of disease will be an essential element in the 22nd European Congress of Pathology. Moreover, the congress will be held in the remarkable city of Florence. This Congress will contribute to the consolidation of our discipline and set standards for its practice for the years to come. Keynote lectures, symposia, slide seminars, courses will keep you informed as to recent progress. Platform and poster sessions will allow you to communicate your recent findings to interested colleagues. An appealing social programme will allow you to refresh old friendships and to make new ones. The unique charme of this beautiful vity is unresistable, with its outstanding cultural heritage. The ESP, the Italian pathologists and the local organisers cordially invite you to attend. The 22nd European Congress of Pathology promises to be an unforgettable experience. Prof. Marco Santucci Congress President Prof. Fred T. Bosman ESP President 4 Programme Presentation The Scientific programme of the 22nd European Congress of Pathology will consist of daily Keynote Lectures on recent scientific and diagnostic advances, Symposia covering selected areas of pathology, Short Courses addressing new scientific results, practical diagnostic challenges and methodological problems, Slide Seminars on actual problems of diagnostic pathology, Videomicroscopy Tutorial Sessions (interactive case discussion with experts), and a special Plenary Session on the “The many faces of the cancer cell: a pageantry of morphological appearances and their biological significance”. In the fifteenth-century Florence, a self-governed, independent city-state with a population of 60.000, became with its writers, painters, architects, and philosophers the cradle of Renaissance culture; Renaissance shifted mankind into the centre of the known cosmos ad man became its measure. With such relevant philosophical and scientific inheritance, with its beautiful Mediterranean climate, good and healthy food, and great shopping Florence it is the ideal place for the 22nd European Congress of Pathology. CONFERENCE VENUE Fortezza da Basso Viale Strozzi 1 50123 Florence, Italy The Fortezza da Basso is a huge fortress commissioned by Alessandro de' Medici and built between 1533 and 1535.
