FROM THE PRINCIPAL

It certainly has been a very busy time for our school with many wonderful positive activities.
Dance & Drama Performing Arts Festival Tour - Congratulations to all our student performers over the
past weeks for representing St Mary’s College so proudly and to very high standards at the Catholic
Performing Arts Festival in Perth. Thank you and congratulations to Mrs Vicki Thompson, Ms Emily
Criddle and Ms Robyn Christie for leading our students to such wonderful results in Dance, Drama.
Thank you also to Michael Lake for his technical and back stage support and to Renee for her assistance with the tours.
Staffing – This week we welcome Ms Bimbi Wijayaratne from Charles Darwin University for her
teaching practicum experience from 31 August until 25 September. Bimbi will be working in the
English Learning Area with Ms Monique Huyskens. We also welcome Ms Beth Graham from Catholic
Education Broome Office who will spend time visiting and observing English classes.
Farewell and Thank you – Today we farewelled Mr David Byrne, who has been delivering Year 11
and Year 12 Religion and Life lessons since the beginning of the year in partnership with Mr Peter
Higgins. David is the Religious Education Learning and Teaching Consultant from Catholic Education WA. He has been flying to and from St Mary’s College throughout the year delivering the
course to our students. On behalf of the staff and students, I sincerely thank David for his generosity
of time and expertise in delivering the Year 11 and 12 Religion and Life Courses.
Wirlburu Opening – On Monday, the annual Wilburu Art Exhibition was opened. The exhibition showcases the works of our creative Kindergarten to Year 6 students. Ms Josie Mazzulla, their Art Teacher
is to be congratulated for the artistic display of the student’s works. The exhibition was opened with
songs from the College Choir led by Ms Tania McKenna, and then officially by Mr Tim Clear, long
standing staff member of St Mary’s. It was very heartening to see how proud the students were of
their artwork. Thank you to all who contributed to the organisation and preparation for the 2015
Wilburu Art Exhibition.
Learning Journey Night – Following on from the opening of the art exhibition, parents visited classrooms and met with teachers to personally discuss their child’s learning journey. My thanks to all
teachers and ATA’s for the obvious amount of preparation each class had gone to in order to
showcase the great learning and teaching occurring in the classrooms. Thank you to Mr Yoshi
Hunter and everyone who helped in cooking and serving the delicious beef rolls and to the parents
for your interest and partnership in your child’s education.
Learning Week Themes - This week marked the
beginning of National Literacy and Numerary Week.
The week celebrates the progress Australian
schools are making in raising the literacy and
numeracy levels of all students. St Mary’s is committed to improving literacy and numeracy standards for all students. Last week we celebrated the
Australian Children’s Book Councils theme for Book
Week – “Books Light Up Our World”. Those of you
who were lucky enough to attend our “Stories Under
The Stars” night, organised by our gifted Librarian,
Ms Di Leitch would have thoroughly enjoyed the
magic night of stories and songs by the campfire.

FROM THE PRINCIPAL cont.
Michael Pepper
This was followed on Friday by the much anticipated Book Parade where students paraded dressed as
their favourite book characters. The recent Science Week is the annual celebration of science in Australia.
Our Science teachers and students took the opportunity to enjoy and explore the wonders of science
through activities that enhanced their learning experiences. Secondary Science staff also hosted a very
scientific morning tea.
Year 12 Study Seminars – The Year 12 mock exams which take place in week 10 are a reminder for our
hard working senior students that their school years are coming to an end. Year 12 teachers assisted by
colleagues are running extra study sessions for the students from 5-7pm in the secondary library. I thank all
the teachers for their dedication and commitment in giving their time so generously to assist our Year 12’s
prepare for their examinations and I wish our students well in their preparation for this very important part
of their school life.
Visit to Broome by the Prime Minister – On Saturday 22 August, a number of our students attended a special function to sing the National Anthem for the visiting Prime Minister, Mr Tony Abbott. Thank you to Ms
Vicki Thompson for accompanying our student choir and to Ms Robyn Christie for assisting in the choirs
preparation for this special event.
Athletics Carnivals – Thank you to Mr Mark Dellar, Mr Ed Connor all our PE teachers, College staff, WK Clontarf Footy Academy, Deadly Sista Girlz, Garnduwa staff plus the many parents who have contributed to
our Athletics Carnivals over the past two weeks. The student’s embraced the opportunity to perform at
their very best and a number of records were broken at the carnivals. The presentation of our oval was in
superb condition which is testament to the hard working grounds and maintenance team.
Looma Visit – This Friday staff and students from Looma Community School visited for an orientation Program. The students, 10 boys and 10 girls were from Year 6 and Year 7. We welcome and encourage other
schools to come and visit our campuses to experience what St Mary’s College has to offer.
Open Afternoon – All existing and prospective students and parents are invited to our College Open afternoon and Year 7 Information Night on Wednesday September 16 September. Tours of the College will be
available at the Secondary Campus from 4:30 to 6:00pm. This will be followed by a Year 7 Information
Session from 6.00 to 6.45pm and then a sausage sizzle and social gathering until around 7.30pm.
There is a flyer included with this newsletter as an invitation to our open afternoon. Please spread the good
news of St Mary’s College amongst your family and friends.
Whole College Assembly next Wednesday – Parents and friends are all welcome to come and watch the
next Whole College Assembly on Wednesday 9 September, at the undercover area on the secondary
campus. If your child is receiving a certificate to recognise achievement, you will be contacted by the
school to confirm this .

Sacrament of Confirmation
On Saturday 19th September we have students who will receive the Sacrament of Confirmation. This is a
very special sacrament and the students have been busily preparing for this. There will be a Retreat Day on
the 18th September for all candidates.
Father’s Day
This Sunday is our celebration of Fathers Day. We wish all of our dads a very special Fathers Day and hope
that the little people in their lives spoil them.
Congratulations
Miss Melissa and her husband Clay welcomed Scarlett Astyn to the world. It is very exciting for them and we
look forward to meeting their little addition.
Book Week
Last Week we celebrated our love and importance of reading with our Book Week. The week commenced
with a Book Week opening presented by our Year One students. Our annual Story Telling night was a brilliant success yet again with loads of stories from our community, everyone was thoroughly entertained. The
week then came to a close with our Book Week parade. The students and staff looked amazing and the
costumes and range of characters was very impressive. Students had opportunities to celebrate reading
and learning all week with buddy activities and learning opportunities in class. A huge thanks to students
and families for supporting this event so well and to Miss Di and teachers for embracing the love of reading
and sharing this passion.
Year 6 Camp
We have been busily reviewing our Year Six Camp and have been hearing all about this opportunity from
our students as they complete learning activities in class. The feedback and positivity of the experience
from students has been wonderful to hear. We have been impressed with the students response to all the
opportunities they had whilst they were in Canberra and witnessing the leadership and friendships that
have been consolidated
Year 5 Camp
Organisation is almost finalised for our Year Five students to visit Barn Hill for our Year Five Cultural Camp. We
can’t wait to share some photos of this experience when they return to school. Interschool Athletics
What a busy time it is for our Mr Ed. With the success of our Athletics Carnival and Jumps Carnival this week
it is straight into the Interschool competitions that are organised. Thankyou to Mr Ed and all staff who are
supporting these events. It is wonderful to showcase the sporting prowess of our students.
Parent Teacher Meetings
For the next two weeks we will be having our parent teacher interviews. Teachers need to meet with all
families so that they can discuss students progress and keep you informed of their learning journey. We look
forward to seeing you all here over the next couple of weeks.
NAPLAN Results
Our NAPLAN reports have been received and processed. Teachers are currently reviewing these reports
and these will be mailed home on Friday to families. Please look through these reports and be mindful that
they are a snapshot of your students learning, as it is one assessment on one day. Please discuss with your
child’s teacher if you would like any further clarification or information regarding this information. There are
flyers and a letter enclosed with the reports for all families in Years 3&5 outlining some further detail.
Surfing
Our Year 3-6 students will be surfing on Cable Beach once again this year in weeks Nine and Ten.
Instructors will be facilitating the sessions with Mr Ed, Mr Joseph and Miss Ebonee transporting the students
to and from and joining in the surfing fun. This is a wonderful opportunity for students to learn this new skill of
surfing or consolidate their talents in this area. We are looking forward to hearing all about this activity from
our students.
Thanks for a busy and
successful Term Three
thus far, it has been
fabulous to have families supporting our
community events so
strongly! Looking forward to the last few
weeks of term with lots
more happening before holidays. Have a
fabulous fortnight.
Drama Catholic Performing Arts Tour
Last week nine drama students flew to Perth to compete in
the Catholic Performing Arts Festival hosted by Chisolm College. We arrived in Perth late on Tuesday afternoon and finished the day with some fun and exhausting rehearsals in
preparation for our performances the next day. On Wednesday, we each performed our monologues to the adjudicator
and the audience, competing against several other schools
from the state. It was an intimidating but exhilarating experience for all of our talented participants! All of our students
achieved outstanding scores and were given very valuable
feedback from the adjudicator (who is also a WACE exam
adjudicator and marker). It was finally time to relax and what
a better way to do that than journey through the Heath
Ledger State Theatre on a personalised tour by the State Theatre Events Manager! After the tour, we were
lucky enough to dine at San Churros in Perth; delicious! That night we saw a phenomenal show called The
Mars Project which was performed by third-year WAAPA students. It was a very powerful performance
that encouraged us to start talking about Autism. It was a very empowering performance. We also had
the opportunity to question the cast and the writer about the show and the rehearsal process. After an
extraordinary long day, we finally hit the pillows. On Thursday morning we had the chance to perform for
another school and meet-up with some past students of St. Mary’s. After that, it was time to get serious
about shopping! We shopped ‘til we dropped’ and then it was time for our flight home. This was a fantastic trip with some very talented, fun and mature students who should all be very proud of their achievements and the way they represented the school. Ms Emily Criddle
Year 7 Science
SIMPLE MACHINES
The year 7's have been busy in Science investigating different types of simple and complex
machines. One type of simple machine we have been looking at is the lever. To help with our understanding we have listed common levers we use everyday such as scissors, wheelbarrows and nut
crackers! We also held a competition to see who could create the best marshmallow launcher (a very
useful lever!)
SECONDARY INTERSCHOOL CROSS COUNTRY
What an amazing event for the school! Broome Senior High school brought a team to St Mary’s on Friday August 7 th to
compete in the first Interschool Cross Country since we (Brian Kane) can remember. Looking resplendent in our new
Athletic singlets the SMC team ran hard and fast on our home turf. In what is going to become a permanent fixture
on the school calendar St Mary’s ran out victorious on the day to hold the championship until next year. A huge
round of applause for all team members who demonstrated their high level of CR Endurance in such a predominant
fashion. Our fitness sessions in the HPE classes certainly set our school up well to be in front at the final siren. Thanks to
all staff who helped this amazing event to happen. Individual Champions and points are as follows:

House Athletics Carnival:
Friday the 28th August was as perfect a day as the Kimberley has
to offer and WARD House made good use of the prevailing conditions to come out narrow winners from BARBIER in
the final countdown. Students from all four Houses threw, jumped and sprinted their way around the secondary campus oval which looked like we were expecting visiting dignitaries with the plethora of colour. High level performances
were produced across all age ranges and the level of participation was exceptional as each House pitted their best
against the opposition in the traditional TRACK and FIELD events. Congratulations to all winners and especially to the
staff who once again worked tirelessly to make it all happen. Individual Champions and House totals as follow:

PRIMARY HOUSE ATHLETIC CARNIVAL
The Primary House Athletics Carnival was held on Friday 21 August on the Secondary Campus oval. All of
the students began the day by participating in the traditional Marching Parade. This marching is a significant part of St. Mary’s history and it is always great to see the students begin each Athletics Carnival with
this great building up of House and school spirit. O’Brien once again took out the Marching Shield – the
third year in a row! Well done O’Brien!
A highlight of the day is always watching the Kindy students participate in their sprint races at the beginning of the carnival. So many parents turn out to see this special milestone achievement and it really helps
the carnival get off to a great start. All of the students on the day tried their very best and it was fantastic
to see the sportsmanship and camaraderie amongst the students. With an emphasis on participation and
enjoyment the students certainly embraced the objectives of the carnival.
A huge thank you to all of the parents who helped out on the day as well as the teachers who all ensured
that the day ran smoothly and was a huge success. It wouldn’t be possible without the teamwork by everyone and it is much appreciated by the students and myself. The grounds again looked magnificent
thank to the maintenance team led by Ralph and Murray and again our sincere thanks goes to them for
their preparation.
Quite a few records were broken on the day, with Reshinta Bradshaw in Year 5 breaking 3 of them.
Reshinta ran the 100m in 14.56 seconds, the 200m in 32.42 seconds and the 400m in 1:14.66! An outstanding achievement Reshinta! Other records broken on the day were Year 1 Nevaeh Dann in the 75m (13.34
seconds),Year 6 Shanessa Leak in the 200m (33.28 seconds), and Year 5 Taj Murphy in the 400m (1:12.81).
Congratulations to those record breakers and also to the Champion Boys and Girls listed in the table below.
The 2015 St. Mary’s House Athletics Champion for 2015 is Ward House! They took the lead very early in the
day and were never in trouble of losing it. Barbier were gallant in defeat and it was extremely close for 3 rd
and 4th, with O’Brien just pipping Rice. Congratulations to Ward House, continuing their dominant display
on the Primary Campus in 2015!

Performing Arts Festival
From 19 August until 27 August students participated in the Catholic Schools Performing Arts Festival (Dance) at the Perth Convention Centre. The students astounded the crowd with six very well rehearsed items. Family and friends gathered to view the event and to acknowledge the work that the
students are doing in in performing arts. Congratulations to all of those involved and a BIG THANKYOU
to Ms Renee Holmes and to Mr Lake for assisting Ms Vicki Thompson with the well-being of the students
for the week.

Clontarf Community Fun Run
On Sunday 30th August, local community members from Broome, local Clontarf partners and students of the Clontarf West
Kimberley Academy assembled at Gantheaume Point for the inaugural Clontarf Community Fun Run. Participants gathered
from 6.30am to sign in and get a competitor number and be a part of the exciting community event. There were roughly 80
participants signed in and rearing to go at 7.00am, and with all the pre-race briefings complete the siren sounded to officially
start the race.
The 4km track along Gantheuame beach and through Minyir Park dunes was designed to cater for all abilities meaning some
entrants walked, some jogged and some ran flat out to finish in the placings. With awards on offer for 1 st placed adult and
junior male and female categories, there were some great running displays on show.
St Mary’s College student David Ningella finished first in the junior male category and continued his fine season in all sports
this year. A raft of St Mary’s students finished the run and
a special thanks must go to Kristine Van and the Residential College staff for bringing all the Residential College
students down.
The morning was capped off with a BBQ and an opportunity for Clontarf students to mingle with different community members, a key component of the event. Thanks
to all the Clontarf staff who helped make the event
possible.
