Voices for Children
Voices for Children Summer 2012 A Newsletter from Liberty House “where a child’s voice is heard” a Child Abuse Assessment Center Serving Marion & Polk Counties Sprague Abuse Case Must Create Community Conversation By Capi Lynn Sixty-seven percent of sexual abuse victims are children under age 18. About 1 in 3 girls* and 1 in 6 boys are sexually abused before they turn 18. “It really is important that we talk about it,” Joa said. “We all need to have information to know what to do if we come across a situation. The statistics are alarming. “Most school employees, they would never abuse a child. They are here to help them learn and grow.” Even more alarming is the fact that nearly 90 percent of the time, the abuser is not a stranger. “It’s almost always someone they know, love or trust,” said Debbie Joa, Prevention and Protection Coordinator for the Salem-Keizer School District. A family member, a close relative, a neighbor, a pastor, a scout leader, a coach or a teacher, anyone could violate that trust. We have seen the headlines across the country over the years, from widespread abuse by priests in the Catholic Church to high-profile charges against a former assistant football coach at Penn State University. Now closer to home and fresh on all our minds are the recent arrests of five MidWillamette Valley teachers — all within a span of less than two weeks — on sexual abuse charges. One of the teachers is from Sprague High School. We may not know all the details in these cases, because investigations are ongoing, but one thing is certain: These arrests make us parents worry about the safety of our children. Schools are supposed to be the one place, outside of the home, where we should feel safe to send our kids. These arrests remind us of the dangers, even in the safest of places, and community conversation about those dangers is vital. * Due to inconsistent definitions, the number varies across studies. Most school employees, when they give students their undivided attention and heap praise on them, are being genuine and the relationship is harmless. But in rare cases, lines are crossed and the actions become a part of what is called the grooming process. Grooming is when a predator befriends and establishes emotional connections with a child to deliberately lower their inhibitions and condition them not to tell another adult. Salem-Keizer School District publishes a brochure listing interactions with students that are appropriate and interactions that are not, and distributes it during mandatory sexual conduct training that is required by law for all Oregon school employees. The inappropriate list includes making comments that are physical in nature or may have sexual overtones; meeting with students off-campus; receiving or writing personal communication from/to student and/or giving gifts; a pattern of giving special privileges or showing favoritism to a particular student; and invading personal space or being too close in physical proximity. Educating employees and parents is a priority for the district, which offers community workshops throughout the school year on topics such as recognizing child molesters, Internet safety and teen dating violence. The workshops are in collaboration with local law enforcement, the district attorney’s office and Liberty House. Casey Mills, child interviewer and family support specialist at Liberty House, has helped make educating teenagers a priority. He developed a presentation about sexual abuse, with input from colleagues, and regularly makes visits to local high schools. “While there were programs for adults to attend, I felt the piece that was missing was educating teens and the children,” he said. The primary topics of his presentations are sexual abuse, date violence and sexting. But the most important piece, and message, is always communication. “The kids can ask anything they want. Nothing is off limits,” Mills said. Mills, a licensed professional and nationally certified councilor, says teenagers has asked him everything from “Who should I tell first?” to “Can boys be raped?” continues on page 2: Conversation Director’s Notes Board of Directors Danny Bisgaard An Ounce of Intervention Retired Oregon State Police Steve Duvall Oregon State Police Gretchen Bennett, Executive Director Randall Green Mid-Valley Counseling Center Mary Lou Hazelwood Hazelwood Consultants Dawn Hunter DHS Child Welfare Mary James Marion County Circuit Court Debbie Joa Salem/Keizer Schools Becky Kahl Rushing Real Estate Cindy Peck AmeriTitle Scott Sadler As you can imagine, I share our collective and deeply held desire to prevent child abuse. I take personal satisfaction in participating in our community’s annual Child Abuse Prevention Month activities and am grateful for our community’s commitment to this key work. You’ll also commonly hear me talk about the importance of intervention and the preventative affects of quality child abuse assessment. I work at Liberty House because I see firsthand how powerful a child abuse assessment can be in preventing further abuse acts. If a concern of abuse arises, a quality, coordinated first response is capable of preventing further acts of abuse – additional abuse to the same child and/or abuse to additional child victims. It strikes me as one of our community’s greatest opportunities: to step in right when an abuse concern first arises. It’s one of the best ways I know to protect children in the future. Please join me in making the prevention of child abuse an ongoing, daily priority, applying the concepts we learn in April to our daily living. Visit our website for information and resources. Call us with questions or concerns. Engage in activities that open and sustain dialogue with the children and youth in our community. Together we can prevent and intervene in child abuse. The purpose of the presentation is “educating the teens on what to do if or when something happens either to them, their friends, their siblings or their relatives,” Mills said. “We’re giving them the tools they need to be safe and know what to do.” Those who work in the field of child sexual abuse agree that it is important for parents to begin talking to their children about the subject when they are young. Teach them that it is not OK for someone to look at or touch their private parts. Continue the conversations as your child gets older. “The important piece I think Liberty House would stress is being supportive and having open communication, letting the child know it’s OK to tell and that it’s not their fault,” Mills said. Blame often is a barrier to a child disclosing abuse — they may feel it’s their fault and they don’t want to get in trouble — so parents should remember to be nonjudgemental and remember who is at fault. “A person who is in a role of authority and power and influence, the accountability lies with that adult,” Mills said. “And any other adults who know about it and don’t act upon it.” Copyright by Statesman Journal. Chefs for Liberty House 2012 a Great Success Oh, what a night! On the first warm and sunny day of the year, Liberty House supporters came out to Creekside Golf Club, who graciously donated their venue for our 10th annual Chefs for Liberty House event. Guests mingled, bid on silent auction items, ate a fabulous meal, sipped great local wine, and raised their paddle for the children Liberty House serves. At the end of the evening, we exceeded our goal - raising over $95,000 for Liberty House! photos by Laurie Marie Photography Henry and Kelsey Truong Steckers, Leonardos, & Callahans While listening to the music of Bill Hughes and Wagner Trindade, guests nibbled on delicious appetizers from Karo Thom of Alcyone Café & Catering and Richard Cunningham of Lakeside Restaurant at Creekside Golf Club, and tasted wines from Vitae Springs Vineyard, Cubanisimo Vineyards, Chemeketa NW Viticulture Winery and Methven Family Vineyards. Great local beer was also provided by Pale Horse Brewing and Seven Brides Brewing. And guests enjoyed bidding on silent auction items including jewelry, wine, trips and food, while also taking their chances on the Wall of Wine, where guests purchased disguised bottles of wine. Once dinner was served, guests were treated to a wedge salad prepared by Pedro Rosales of La Margarita Restaurant and served with a Terrapin Cellars Tammi Burns & Steffani Klein Pinot Gris. The pork osso buco entrée from David Rosales of La Capitale Brasserie was amazing and paired with a Redhawk Winery Pataccoli Family Vineyards Pinot Noir. Vegetarians were equally pleased by the portobello mushroom entrée by Paul Lieggi of Bon Appetit Management Company, which was beautiful and delicious and paired with a Syrah by Mystic Wine. Paired with a Zephyra dessert wine from Van Duzer Vineyards was a spiced dark chocolate tart from Michael Sullivan of Chef De Cuisine that had all the guests talking. We are so grateful to our generous chefs for the wonderful meal. Before the live auction began, the energy in the room picked up with a fun game of Heads or Tails, which was quickly won by Art James, who then generously donated his winnings back to Liberty House. Thank you, Art! Auctioneer Paul Schultz and his partner, Jake Baggett, then worked the crowd during the live auction with Liberty House Board President, Danny Bisgaard, describing the auction packages and the lovely Erin Molyneaux displaying the items around the room. Oversized sunglasses went with a Palm Springs golf trip, Chicago Cubs hats set the tone for a trip to Wrigley field and chef’s hats were given to the lucky winners of a trip to Paris to visit Le Cordon Bleu! In a poignant moment towards the end of the evening, Liberty House Board Member Cindy Peck spoke about a young hero who was able to speak up and cause change in policies to ensure children’s safety at a summer camp. She described how fortunate the boy and his family were to be aware of Liberty House, and how his bravery and action caused a ripple effect of action in the camp. When Cindy finished, guests took action and caused a ripple effect of their own, donating nearly $45,000 to support services at Liberty House. Wow! We are so grateful. Of course, none of this would have been possible without our amazing volunteers! We are so grateful for all the help with set up, check in, monitoring the auctions, serving, clean up, etc. Each of you are our heroes, but especially the Dolls of Anarchy Roller Derby team, Western Oregon University staff and students, the Keizer Renaissance Inn and the many other volunteers for stepping up as volunteer servers. We couldn’t have done it without you! Thanks to our generous sponsors and guests, we exceeded our goal this year, and we couldn’t be more pleased. The services Liberty House provides to vulnerable children and their families are so important, and this event plays a large part in that. Thank you to all who helped make the evening such a success. They meet at Liberty House every month to work on projects for us and to socialize with one another. However, truth be told, they don’t socialize much. They just work, work, work and get things done so fast! It is absolutely wonderful. In the past months, the group has worked on our Spring Giving Gardens, wrote personal thank you notes to our donors and helped in so many ways with preparations for our Chefs for Liberty House event. We are so grateful for all the help. We couldn’t do it all without them. Plus, they are all such fun – we have a great time when they are here! The VOICES group meets the 3rd Thursday of the month from 5:00 to 6:30 pm. If you’d like to join the VOICES Volunteer Group, contact Adrienne Christian at 503-540-0288 or [email protected]. 4 Voices for Children • Liberty House • Summer 2012 Caring Community Highlights The Cleanery Laurie Marie Photography You really helped make our Chefs event shine! Frank Bartruff (right) & family with Melissa Briggs Barbara Hosier & Pat Savory Spring Giving Gardens For the month of April, Child Abuse Prevention Month and Liberty House’s Birthday, many wonderful local businesses hosted our first annual Spring Giving Garden project. Each business was given a flower pot with leaves printed with Liberty House Wish List Items, like copy paper, batteries, snacks for the children, etc. Like a holiday giving tree, the businesses’ staff and customers were able to take a leaf, purchase the item that Liberty House needs, and return the item to a collection. When we gathered all the items that the businesses had collected, we were thrilled with the results. So many great gifts to Liberty House of items that we use every day! Those gifts really reduce our expenses. Thank you so much!
