Ensure that this Manual has been read and understood by w
the operator.
This appliance is not intended for use by young children or w
infirm persons without supervision.
Young children should be supervised to ensure that they do
not play with the appliance.
Only trained operators should use this appliance and be w w
familiar with its adjustment and use.
The Shadow Vac is NOT a wet pick up machine. Do not vacuum wet surfaces, damp w
areas or suck up water.

Position the waist band into the 'small' of w
your back just above your backside. This will
lower the center of gravity of the unit,
position the weight closer to the body and to
the stronger pelvic area, provide freedom of
movement for the arms, prevent the unit from
riding up the back with slight forward
bending, and provide greater manoeuvreability
with less effort for any vacuuming task.
Tighten waist strap until secure and
comfortable.
Pull down on both ends of the shoulder strap
until the back supports just makes contact w
with the back, bringing the unit into a
vertical position. The tension in the shoulder
straps should be minimal, enabling you to
easily insert your fingers easily between the w
shoulder strap and shoulder.

Switch the vacuum ON. The switch is located at the
left hand side at waist level.
The combination floor tool can be used for either
hardfloors or carpet. The foot pedal extends the
brush bristles and is used for vacuuming hard floors,
or it can be retracted for vacuuming carpet. When w w
removing the floor tool, twist the chrome wand
while holding the floor tool neck. Do not stand
on floor tool.
The slide regulator on the hand grip of the wand,
controls the airflow and suction at the floor tool nozzle.
The resistance between the tool and floor surface w w w
depends on floor type and suction. Opening the slide w w
regulator will reduce the resistance. Adjust the regulator
to an open position when vacuuming loose coverings
e.g. tapestry, or upholstery corners using the crevice
tool attachment.

The crevice tool is designed for w w
crevice cleaning on upholstered
furniture or spot cleaning.
The (optional) dusting brush is used
for upholstery, corner and cornices
cleaning.
Both the crevice tool and dusting w
brush can be used with or without w
the chrome wands, simply attach it
to the end nozzle of the hose. The
main advantage is to reduce the w w
need for physical bending when
vacuuming. The plastic ferrule at w
the chrome wand, allows for w w w
easy disconnection.
w
w
w
w
w
w
For large open area cleaning, the (optional) Powerhead provides up to 750 square w w
metres of cleaning per hour. To connect, plug the two pin plug of the Powerhead into
the electrical outlet socket located above the ON/OFF switch prior to wearing. w w
Attach the cable retaining clips supplied with the Powerhead, at an equally spaced w
distanced along the chrome wand, to retain the Powerhead cord. The Powerhead is w
activated by the ON/OFF switch of the vacuum cleaner.
w
w
w
w
w
For fine dust areas use the (optional) paper bag liners, inside the cloth filter bag.
The Shadow Vac is provided with an integral cord restraint. Ensure that the cord is w
fitted through the lead guide in order to provide strain relief to the cord.
The Shadow Vac is provided with on board tool storage. Store the crevice tool and w
dusting bush in the holes provided for ready access.

Use, Operation and Manoeuvreability
w The slender profile of the Shadow Vac limits the protrusion from the operators w
w back to 270mm. It is important to maintain this clearance to prevent collision
w while working.
w
w
w
w
w
For comfortable operation of the Shadow Vac, stand upright with a relaxed
posture, arms hanging loosely to the side. Maintaining a straight wrist, hold the w
hand grip section of the wand with one hand, parallel to the floor. The double w
swivel neck on the floor tool more than compensates for any height variance of w
operators, and maintains a flat vacuuming face to the floor.
w Use an easy armswing motion that
w covers approximately a 600mm w w
w stroke when vacuuming.
w Plan the work path based on location of the power point, room/furniture layout, and
w entrance and exit points
w
w
w
w
Commence vacuuming using a systematic approach working one half of the area first,
away from the power point and then the other half of the area, returning back to w
the start. Ensure that the power cord is clear of feet to reduce likelihood
of tripping.

w When vacuuming under office desks, the reach of the wands is sufficient to avoidw
w bending at the waist. When vacuuming under lower profile objects, or when picking
w up items off the floor, bend the knees and maintain a straight back.
w When turning do not twist at the waist, turn using your feet.
w Once finished, switch the
w vacuum OFF at the machine,
w then switch OFF at the w
w power point and unplug from
w p o w e r s o c k e t . Remove Shadow
w Vac by unbuckling waist band
w and sliding strap off one w
w shoulder by sliding hand and
w arm between shoulder strap w
w and body. Lower unit to the
w floor using free hand
w (DO NOT DROP).

Maintenance and Storage
Cord Storage and Maintenance
w
w
w
w
w
w
w
w
w
w
w
w
w
Gather the cord by winding from the w w w
machine end, checking for cuts, fractures w
and cleaning the cord if soiled. This
practice minimises the likelihood of w w w
knuckling, and provides a visual inspection w
of cord. Drape cord over the frame for w
storage. Replace badly kinked or knuckled w
cords. Knuckling is caused by stretching the
cord. Stretching occurs by pulling on an w w
entrapped cord, winding the cord from the
machine end while still plugged into the w w
power point, or winding the cord from
the plug end.
Filter Bag Maintenance
w
w
w
w
w
w
The filter bag must be emptied frequently, and the fine dust coating removed from w
the bag surface. Access the filter bag by releasing the canister clamps holding the w
lid. To clean, push the bag inside out over a bin, and then brush the surface clean w
using a soft bannister brush or vacuum. Do not hit the bag against a wall because
this may damage the filter media. Check the filter bag for perforations to maintain w
filtration efficiency.

Secondary Filter Maintenance
w
w
w
w
The secondary filter is located under the filter w w
bag. The filter can be cleaned by thoroughly washing
in water with neutral detergent. Ensure the filter is
dry before refitting.
Exhaust Filter Maintenance
w The exhaust filter is located on the vacuum cleaner w w
w exhaust. Replace filter at 500-600hr intervals or at
the same time as the motor or carbon brushes.
Blockage Checks, Hose and Hose
Swivel Maintenance
w
w
w
w
Loss of suction can occur due to
blockages, check for blockages at
t h e floor tool, bent elbow and w
along hose length.
w Loss of suction can also occur if
w the hose splits, check the hose w
w for splits.
w The double swivel action at each
hose end may lock when heavily
impregnated with dust. To free
the joint, squeeze together the
bayonnet click ring retainers and
clear the obstructing dust and
debris, before re-assembling.
Motor Maintenance
w Check vacuum motor carbon brushes at regular intervals using qualified personel. w w
w Estimated life of carbon brushes is approximately 500-600 hrs.

w Plan work path based on layout and work area using a systematic approach.
Property Damage
w Keep a safe 270mm clearance distance from walls, corners and edges
w to avoid collision.
Trips, Slips, and Falls
w Work away from electrical cord and keep clear of feet.

w grain dust.
w Do not block the cooling fan inlet at the bottom of the unit.
Musculoskeletal Injury
w Wear equipment correctly as described.
w Use correct posture when using equipment.
w Avoid bending, and maintain a straight wrist when holding hand grip section of wand.
w Bend at knees maintaining a straight back when picking up objects off the floor.
w Do not twist at waist when turning, use your feet.
Respiratory Damage/Illness due to Irritant Dust Hazard
w Do not use machine for vacuuming hazardous dust/particulates as defined in clause w
w 50 NSW WorkCover Occupational Health and Safety Regulation 2001.
