WisconScene The Current July 2015. Page 9 The Rahr-West Art Museum, Manitowoc by Rodney Schroeter for the Current On Sunday morning, June 21, I visited the Wings & Wheels exhibit at the Sheboygan County Memorial Airport. After gathering over a hundred photos of wings, wheels, and propellers, I was in the mood for a different kind of propeller, so I drove up to Manitowoc. Destination: The Rahr-West Art Museum. The primary reason for my visit was an exhibit of paintings with a submarine theme. As director Greg Vadney writes in a brochure for the museum: “A View from the Periscope is traveling to us from the U. S. Navy’s Art Collection. This unique exhibit features over a century of artists’ renderings of naval submarines. The Rahr-West was selected to exhibit this collection due to Manitowoc’s history as a naval shipbuilder during World War II.” Twenty-eight submarines were built in Manitowoc during World War II. The brochure also says that the Navy Art Collection “includes over 20,000 paintings, prints, drawings, and engravings consisting of naval ships, personnel, and actions from The item on display is a replica, because American officials offered the actual piece to the Soviets (after making the replica). A View from the Periscope will be part of the first annual Subfest in Manitowoc, July 10 through 12. Activities include scheduled events at the Wisconsin Maritime Museum; four all eras of U. S. naval history.” Remember the ending of the first Indiana Jones movie? The warehouse? That’s the kind of image the above statement conjures up in my mind. I wouldn’t mind being allowed to browse that collection, for about a year or two. A View from the Periscope will be on display at Rahr-West until midSeptember of 2015. Worthwhile as that exhibit is (as I hope the photos here suggest), RahrWest has more to offer. Part of the museum is “The Mansion,” a home built in the early 1890s. Works of art are on display throughout this mansion—not only paintings, but carved ivory, dolls, porcelains, and items from Manitowoc’s sister city in Japan, Kamogawa. Also on display in the museum is a replica of debris from Sputnik IV, which crashed to the Earth on September 5, 1962. A 20-pound chunk hit the street just outside where the museum now stands, and is marked. submarine movies at the Capitol Civic Centre; live music; fireworks; and sidewalk sales in the downtown blocks. The movies, which are scheduled to run all three days of this event, are: Legacy of Lagarto (2009 documentary) Destination Tokyo (1943) Operation Petticoat (1959) Run Silent, Run Deep (1958) On Friday afternoon, July 10, Jim Bates, who appeared in Run Silent, Run Deep, will introduce the movie. After the screening, he will answer questions. This movie starred Burt Lancaster and Clark Gable, and was directed by Robert Wise (who also directed The Sound of Music and The Andromeda Strain). The Internet Movie Database (imdb.com) lists Jimmy Bates as one of the cast, playing “Jessie (uncredited).” A glance at Bates’ other credits shows he had a varied career as a TV actor, appearing in The Real McCoys, Lassie, Dennis the Menace, The Farmer’s Daughter, and The Man from U.N.C.L.E. being just a few. The Rahr-West Museum is open 10 a.m to 4 p.m., Tuesday through Friday; 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. Saturday and Sunday. It’s closed Monday.
