Find a Hike You'll Like
A memorable visit to Starved Rock is usually
enhanced by the weather. We speak from
experience when we say the weather changes
daily and so does the look of the Park. Will
spring arrive hesitantly or will we have three
days of 80 degree temperatures and sunshine?
As much as the robin is the harbinger of spring
it’s the green that we can’t wait to see. The
newness of all that is spring quickly gives way
to all that is summer. Spring is a fast season,
but summer lingers, giving hikers an unending
opportunity to explore and discover an everchanging landscape. The pace of life at Starved
Rock tends to be slower. Two or three hours
buys you several choices of hikes to the hot
spots or you can go all-out and join the
MegaHike (all canyons in one day, 13.4 miles
round-trip). How much time do you have?
Check out the variety of hikes that are waiting
for you! See the Virginia Bluebells (April &
May) and May Apples in bloom, with
hundreds more wildflowers to follow. There are
over 225 blooms to see between February and
late September. So, stop watching the clock
and look at a compass instead! The therapeutic
value of a walk in the woods will do wonders
for your heart, mind and soul. Check our
Facebook page for wildflower updates.
One-Hour Hikes:
1
Option #1 – The best must-take hike is a walk to the
top of Starved Rock. Spend a little time at the top and
enjoy the panoramic view of the scenic Illinois River
Valley below and take in the rich history of this
National Historic Landmark.
Option #2 – Park at the Ottawa Canyon lot along Route
71 and hike through Council Overhang. Veer right to

Canyon. Ottawa & Kaskaskia Canyons couldn’t be more

yourself!
Two-Hour Hikes:
2

Start at the Starved Rock Visitor Center and hike in and
out of French Canyon then take Jacob’s ladder to Lover’s
Leap and Eagle Cliff. This hike takes you to the highest

see the Park’s most visited canyon.
Option #2 – Hike from the Lodge to Wildcat Canyon via
the Campanula Trail. Return by way of Eagle Cliff &
Lover’s Leap on the Bluff. Trail. Wildcat Canyon is our
deepest canyon and you’ll enjoy the serenity of the
bluff trail.

and head to St. Louis Canyon via the bluff trail which takes
you past Aurora, Kickapoo and Sac Canyons. This hike will
take you to four canyons on one trail!

3
4

Sunday. Departs from the Lodge and hikers visit LaSalle

the mighty Illinois. $12/winter; $17 spring, summer,

In Touch with Your Natural Side
Photo Contest Winners
Over 125 photos were entered in the “In Touch with Your Natural
Side” photography contest, which was held in the Great Hall of the
Lodge earlier this year. Ben Just, of McNabb, took first place in the youth
category. Coby Cooper, of Metamora, took first place in the general category. Jacki Pienta, of
McNabb, took first place in the Starved Rock Lodge employee category, and Manuel D. Perez, of
Downers Gove, took first place in the Senior category.
Photo Contest & Club
Our 2013 photography contest brought us some great shots and produced 12 winners in
4 categories (youth, senior, general & employee). The contest was such a success that we
have begun planning for our 2014 competition “Nature at its Best.” Check our website for
more information and contest rules. By the way, if you have a passion for the camera, join
our Photography Club. The casual group meets on the 4th Saturday of each month and
hikes from 9 am until noon, sharing talents and tips from those who attend. For more
information call 815-220-7354 and talk to Jacki Pienta, club leader.
