There were athletes who didn’t know that the events they participated in were Olympic Games events. Few items relate directly to the Games. Legend and 5 signatures of the Shooting Committee, winged angel carrying fallen soldier at l. The participant competed in 13 different shooting events ranging from 10th to 144th place which earned him the overall 17th Place for Excellence. LOUIS, 3rd OLYMPIC GAMES, 1904 The 1904 Olympic Games in St. Louis were also held in conjunction with a World’s Fair. This, again, detracted a lot from the importance of the Games. Few items are available that relate directly to the Olympiad, and they usually command very high prices. For this reason we are also offering some memorabilia from the World’s Fair which celebrated the Centennial of the Louisiana Purchase from Napoleon in 1803. c129. Gold First Place Winner’s Medal Awarded for Association Football (Soccer). Gold, hallmarked “15 (Karat) 625”, Birmingham, 34mm, 28 grams, by Bertram McKennal, struck by Vaughton & Sons, Birmingham. Two females crowning victorious athlete. Rev. St. George slaying dragon. “WINNER ASSOCIATION FOOTBALL” engraved on edge. The British team won first place in the finals against Denmark (2:0) on October 24, 1908. The medals were presented on the same day in the stadium by J. Bell, Lord Mayor of London. Medal EF, sm. rns., housed in red leather case with goldstamped legend, lt. scuffing, a few sm. stains, inside lined with red velvet and silk. Very rare. ($17,500) c168. Second Place Team Winner’s Medal Awarded for 15 Meter Yacht Race. Bronze, 33mm, by B. McKennal. Victorious athlete being crowned by 2 seated females. Rev. St. George slaying the dragon. “Second Prize 15 Meter Yacht Race” engraved on edge. Second place team medals were made of bronze. Award medals were engraved before the events- there were no entries for the 15 Meter Yacht Race. This event was only offered in London 1908. VF-EF. ($5,000) c169. First International Olympic Committee Badge Presented by the IOC, 1908. Goldplated silver, 1908 hallmark, 52mm, struck by Vaughton & Sons, Birmingham. Olympic motto “Citius Altius Fortius” within open laurel wreath surrounded by “COMITÉ INTERNATIONAL OLYMPIQUE”. There were only 33 IOC members in 1908. Beautiful badge. EF. Extremely rare.
