France – Côte d’Azur. Tel : +33 4 92 10 66 66 - www.chevredor.com Hôtel membre de Phoenix Hotel Collection - www.phoenixhotelcollection.com Eze Village Eze is an Olympus grafted onto a hillside between the Mediterranean and the sky… Follow the footsteps of philosopher Nietzsche, and step beyond the fortified double door entrance into a paradisiac setting. The scent of jasmine, bougainvillea and roses will guide you through cool, climbing alleys. Trompe-l’œil paintings of fake shutters on the village walls. Embellished doors with bas-relief, including the door of Les Riquiers, home to the first lord of Eze. Private properties such as La Chèvre d’Or are rising up into a clear blue sky over artists' workshops and art galleries which are nestling at street level. Let your mind drift back across the centuries and imagine donkeys wending their way through a nature loaded with figs, carobs, olives and mandarins grown in and around the village.Eze name comes from the ancient Latin “avisione”, meaning viewpoint. The small steeple of the penitents' Holy Cross white chapel is a reminder that the village belonged to Provence until the end of the 14th century. Notre Dame de l’Assomption church choir is decorated in baroque style. Boasting an Egyptian cross, it plunges Eze into the mysteries of goddess Isis. Aloe, euphorbia and cactus thrive in exotic gardens that were created in 1949 by Jean Gastaud. Nonchalance and nostalgia colour a many-hued and living décor just a breath away from the sea. The Legend No one can resist the Château de la Chèvre d’Or, its emotions, feel and thrill. Let yourself be lured into a play of shadows and pastel tones, light and contre-jour that melt to envelop this timeless place. Listen to the magic of a legend, recounted time and time again… In Provence, the Chèvre d’Or (the golden goat) was a legendary animal about which many stories were recounted, as in Paul Arène’s novel “La Chèvre d’Or” which was published in 1889. favourite tale passed down through the years describes how, while visiting the village, Yugoslavian violinist Zlatko Balokovic was lead by a goat with a golden coat to a building he then went on to renovate between 1929 and 1931. It would eventually become the famous la Chèvre d’Or. 3 La Chèvre d’Or ***** Rue du Barri – 06 360 Eze Village. France – Côte d’Azur. Tel : +33 4 92 10 66 66 - www.chevredor.com Hôtel membre de Phoenix Hotel Collection - www.phoenixhotelcollection.com Other stories have kept the legend alive, and some villagers say that la Chèvre d’Or owes its name to its original owner. A female farmer who was raising goats and selling their milk each week at Nice market and who would then hide her profits – gold coins – in a stone wall. Later, when the building was renovated, her treasure was rescued from years of slumber and the estate was named after this golden treasure, ensuring the story lived on*. * Reference: Eze Tourist Information Office History In 1953, Robert Wolf fell in love with what was a private house and converted it into a restaurant. La Chèvre d’Or met with immediate success and soon after its reputation reached international magnitude. Hollywood influencers started coming to the restaurant and journalists from all over the world immediately flocked in to interview Robert Wolf. Upon the advice of Walt Disney who immediately fell in love with the gourmet restaurant and the setting, the then owner followed his endeavours by purchasing private houses in the village and converted them into bedrooms. The hotel became one of the 6 places on the "Route du Bonheur" (Road to Happiness) initiated in 1954 by Marcel Tilloy, the founder of what became the Relais et Châteaux association. The restaurant earned its first Michelin® Guide star with Mr Pernet. In 1960, Bruno Ingold, South African Consul to Monaco and Advisor to the Prince of Monaco, partnered with his friend Robert Wolf to develop the hotel division of the Château. At that time there were only 6 rooms. The hotel continues to grow today at the very heart of the village and now boasts 37 rooms and suites. 4 La Chèvre d’Or ***** Rue du Barri – 06 360 Eze Village. France – Côte d’Azur. Tel : +33 4 92 10 66 66 - www.chevredor.com Hôtel membre de Phoenix Hotel Collection - www.phoenixhotelcollection.com In 1972, Claude Hirt was appointed Assistant Manager and started managing the Château, meanwhile, Bruno Ingold, promoted the Château around the world. Head Chef Elie Mazot got in charge of the kitchens, maintaining the restaurant's excellent reputation and its Michelin® star for over twenty years. Princes and princesses, politicians, actors and actresses such as Lauren Bacall, Marlene Dietrich, Elizabeth Taylor, Marisa Berenson, Humphrey Bogart, Roger Moore, Tony Curtis, Clint Eastwood and Robert de Niro, have all visited the Château de la Chèvre d’Or. Robert Wolf passed away in 1977, Bruno Ingold in 1989. Contemporary history "The Chèvre d’Or is a “diva”, truly unique and beyond time limits. Passion and culture inherited from its pioneers ensured its dizzying rise within one of the world’s finest hotel associations. In 1992, a loyal client of the restaurant and "admirer"" of la Chèvre d’Or was to purchase it, entrusting the management to Thierry Naidu. The hotel had 18 rooms at that time. In February 1998, Chef Jean-Marc Delacourt took over from Elie Mazot in the kitchens. Recognition followed quickly with a second Michelin® star, further enhancing the property’s reputation. In 2003 too, a talented Chef called Philippe Labbé came in to strengthen the restaurant's two Michelin® stars. In 2010, La Chèvre d’Or legendary table developed the potential of the 3 extra terrace restaurants dotted around the property’s grounds, and Michelin-starred Head Chef Fabrice Vulin joined to bring a new breath to the Château. Since spring 2013, Ronan Kervarrec become the Chèvre d’Or Executive Chef. Constantly evolving, unfailingly focusing on comfort and modernity, the Château de la Chèvre d'Or now offers its privileged clientele the grace and idyllic atmosphere of terraced gardens, medieval buildings, stone houses and cosy interiors. Such perpetual motion strengthened the reputation of an outstanding property. 5 La Chèvre d’Or ***** Rue du Barri – 06 360 Eze Village. France – Côte d’Azur. The hotel’s records are punctuated with the names of celebrities who continue to give it unrivalled and unique status on the Côte d’Azur. Royalty, politicians, stars of stage and screen as well as many thousands of the happy unnamed guests discovered our own gardens of Eden, touched the ancient stones which are omnipresent in the rooms, suites, walkways and throughout the medieval village, and have taken in the awesome panorama from the hotel, 500mt above the Mediterranean sea and as far as the eye can see. Marcel Tilloy - the founder of Relais et Châteaux - was so seduced by this incomparable property that he made of it one of the famous 6 steps of the ‘Route du Bonheur’ founded in 1954. It is difficult to stay indifferent to the ambiance of the Château de la Chèvre d’Or, hence a plethora of anecdotes about fortune, love and adventure are linked with the history of the hotel - the perfect place for dreams, romance, imagination and relaxation. Yet the Chèvre d’Or has never stood still and keeps on developing, reinventing and excelling itself in all matters of sumptuous luxury, impeccable service and sublime culinary standards. For its 60th anniversary in 2013, Le Château de la Chèvre d’Or pays homage to its history and fame. Here are our suggestions for this exceptional 2013 year: 60th anniversary special menu during 2013 season : chefs who have over the years been in charge of the stoves of the hotel. Courtesy, Charm, Character, Calm and Cuisine are the “5 C’s” in the Quality Charter that has guided Relais & Châteaux association for half a century. They perfectly match the essence of the Château de la Chèvre d’Or. Each of the 38 bright and exquisitely appointed rooms have been recently embellished (new furniture, new decoration...) The Hotel propose 30 rooms and 8 Suites and for each room, unique in architectural and interior design. These are scattered throughout the medieval village, following the warmth of cobblestone paths. Some rooms are modern, others speak of the recent or more distant past, spreading over two floors or opening onto a patio by the pool. Some, with delicate pride, offer a breathtaking view… A bathroom with its bathtub nestling beneath bare rocks; a troglodyte bath overlooking the glistening light of the Med : beyond bath foam and deeming lights, the glow of cascades, ponds and luxuriant greenery on the surrounding hills, brighten the place. Suites lead onto the footsteps of famous artists who visited Eze and La Chèvre d’Or: Jean Cocteau Suite, named after the inspired artist and writer who left a great legacy in the region. Nearby, the ultramodern Luis Navarro Suite is decorated with reproductions of this passionate and discreet artist who was Picasso’s friend and lived many years in the region. The latest suite named after local artist Marc Ferrero plays on the contrasts between the artist’s pos part recurring theme (“La Comitive”) and the mediaeval settings. 8 La Chèvre d’Or ***** Rue du Barri – 06 360 Eze Village.
