March 2010 CLASSICS INCORPORATED RAT PAC Triumph UK Powers Past Japanese Rival By Ian Kerr, Contributing Editor www.motorcycle-usa.com Rides, Ev ents, Fun ! D espite the problems of many other manufacturers including all the big Japanese players, Triumph had record sales in the home market last year despite there being a 10% drop in the UK’s large capacity motorcycle market. Instead of contracting, Triumph increased sales by 26% in 2009, selling 7450 new motorcycles to become the fourth largest big bike brand in the UK, deposing Kawasaki in the ratings. The good news continued right to the end of the year outselling all manufacturers in the month of November and trailing Japanese giant Honda by just one unit in December in the UK marketplace. Patches Arrive M aybe it was the music of THE WHO performing halftime at the Super Bowl game that brought those lyrics to the surface after all those years, but it is a good question. Who are you? Who are we? The answer, of course, is The Triumph Riders Association of Portland. And darn proud of it. Bald Peak Road - Photo by Will Ammutt his will be our first ride of the season. It is a nice route through the beautiful countryside from Beaverton, past Bald Peak State Park and the Bald Peak viewpoint, then out through farm country to Yamhill, where we will have lunch at a yet-to-be-determined restaurant. The route is a combination of roads that will make a good first ride of the season and a fine ride for newer riders. Riders are encouraged to ride their own ride, at their own pace; the emphasis being on having a fun, safe ride with a gathering for lunch. We will meet at Cascade Moto Classics, Inc at 10:00am. Soren Winslow, our ride captain, has posted a map and directions online: www.sorenwinslow.com/map/backinthesaddle.pdf An earlier batch of T.R.A.P. patches sold out some time ago and only a lucky few members were able to proudly display them on their riding jackets. The rest of us could only look at them with envy. But, that has changed. A new batch of patches has arrived at Cascade Moto Classics, Inc, and are available for only $5.00 each. The high-quality patches are 3 inches diameter and are embroidered in green, black and a great silver color. Pick up yours at Cascade Moto Classics, Inc — while they last. Report By Lee Holzhey, Pack Leader T Club Events Galore! his year promises to be a great year for club events. Our club ride captain Soren already has a host of riding events scheduled for us and, if the global warming fanatics are right, we are in for a long and warm riding season. I figure if Al Gore is correct, I should be too old to ride just about the time the planet melts. Just right! Anyway, as I was saying earlier, we have a host of events already lined up this year. Not the least of which is our Annual Spring Opener held the first weekend of June in Yreka, California. One teensy problem: there’s nobody to host it. Gabe, Shaun and Rick have done a fantastic job with this event for many years now, but are moving on and want to pass the baton to someone else. This is the simplest of our multiple-night rides, requiring only collecting release forms, group motel reservations, maps, and the pre-ride speech on Saturday morning. Even the dinner on Saturday night has typically been a “come as you want” event with no prepay or planning. Last year we all just congregated at a great Pizza parlor up the street. Having said this, it does not mean that you couldn’t do more with it if you are the host. Whoever takes over the event can organize dinner, t-shirts, whatever they want, or keep it simple, just as it has been. In fact, the location can even be changed if the new organizers prefer. Perhaps new locations like Bend, or Prineville, where Eastern Oregon roads are just a few miles away. The only thing that cannot change is the date. It must be held the first full weekend of June, as people have planned their vacations around this time. So, if you would like to be more involved in club activities and this sounds like your cup of tea, please contact me ASAP at [email protected]. Speaking of events, we have one additional event this year that simply must not be missed. AHRMA, the American Historic Racing Motorcycle Association, is holding a national race event right here in Portland April 30th to May 2nd. My close friends Ozzie and Ralph Auer have been the national champions in Class C and Pre-40, and from firsthand experience with them I can tell you that this class of vintage racing is unlike anything you have witnessed at P.I.R. AHRMA racers range from vans with everything crammed in, to professional semi-trucks that travel back and forth across the country while the racers fly to the locations and meet up with them. These guys are serious, with some teams comprised of previously nationally ranked riders from years gone by. They bring in full Semis carrying a complete race team with Nortons, BSAs, BMWs, Ariels, NSUs, Triumphs and a host of other names you may not even recognize. The reason AHRMA is expecting such a large turnout of racers for us in Portland, is that the weekend before there is another AHRMA event in California, which makes a perfect West Coast swing for these racers. For more information about this, e-mail Jeff at [email protected] or go to www.OMRRA.com. OK boys and girls, that’s about all for this month. Start checking those batteries and changing that oil, because riding season is truly just around the corner! Marty Johnson receives the “Most Valuable RAT” award from Liz Rubin Jared Miller, our Triumph Rep, with his girlfriend Andrea. By Janice McCarthy Photos By: Mike Butler, Janice McCarthy, Ed Mallett T he Annual Rat Dinner held at the Monarch Hotel on February 13th was successful as judged by the comments we received following the event. We began the evening with a half hour reception and followed that by a wonderful buffet with enough variety to please most palates. The entertainment for the evening was provided by Hart Keene - a very impressive magician. He performed card tricks and swallowed needles that he later extracted from his mouth all threaded on a string. Perhaps the most impressive feat was when he magically pulled out a twenty dollar bill signed by our own RAT Clive Machon from the center of a kiwi after it appeared he had destroyed it by fire! All in all it was great entertainment! Following the entertainment we had our annual awards. We acknowledged the following people who organized events and presented each of them with fleece blankets sporting our new RAT patch: Gabe Spaccarelli & Sean Mansfield for The Season Opener Rick Chappelle & Don Arneson for The Summer Scorcher Soren Winslow for all his organized events for 2009 Brent Carnes for Trap Movie Night at the Mortuary We continued the awards to people we felt had gone out of their way to help out with the RAT Pack. The following were honored with Columbia fleece vests also sporting our new RAT patch: Dave Harvey won the “Good Guy Award” for making sure Santa Claus always shows up at our Holiday Open Houses. Steve and Sherry Eckles won the “Eager Beaver Award” for always being eager to help out especially when they drove miles to help a stranded rider get his bike home. Martin Clark won the “Triumph Booster Award” for his promoting of the Triumph brand to all who will listen. He even subtly encourages the brand while he is working by leaving his Triumph hat, helmet, 4 RAT Tales Newsletter etc. in full view of the public while at his place of employment – the DEQ. Special recognition went to Ed Buschow his dedication in seeing that the newsletter gets out monthly. I can tell you from experience, it is a very big job! The top awards went to Soren Winslow and Marty Johnson who won the Pack Leader’s Choice Award and Most Valuable RAT Award respectively. They were very worthy recipients! In addition to the above awards, we enjoyed spoofing some people with joke awards. Betty Simnitt, being the first person to purchase a new Thunderbird, was our Lab Rat when it came to installing accessories because it was all new to us. She had to wait more than most while we figured out how each accessory went on. In case she ever is used as a Lab Rat again, we gave her a maze to start practicing! Heidi Nelson wears a helmet with blue pigtails coming out the sides so we presented her with her own RAT with similar blue pigtails. Isacc Bauman had an incident involving a rock that left his Daytona with different colored side panels. He was given the very rock that caused the problem along with a replica of his bike attached. We also teased Nick Kathrein with a bald rat to represent his willingness to be shaved bald for the wonderful St. Baldrick’s charity. In between all the awards, Liz handed out door prizes that were donated by Kevin Larsen of Tucker Rocky, Eric Rogers of Parts Unlimited and Cascade Moto Classcics, Inc. The big door prize of the evening was the limited edition, framed and signed Bonneville print. It was won by Nick Kathrein. We would like to thank Jared Miller (our Triumph Rep) and his girlfriend Andrea for their support and taking the time to drive all the way down from Seattle to attend the dinner. A major thank you to Lee Holzhey and Liz for emceeing the entire evening. They did a fantastic job as usual! Thank you to those of you who attended and hope to see you all next year! n www.rat-pack.com Street Strategies Road Sharks There’s No Lack of Aggressive Drivers on the Road These Days By David L. Hough Nick Kathrein receives the evening’s premium door prize, the limited edition Triumph Bonneville print. Attendees line up for the great buffet dinner. Y ou’re cruising down the freeway on your way home from the Saturday breakfast meeting. You’re in no hurry, but you maintain a slightly higher speed than the traffic’s average. You know that accidents can happen quickly on the freeway, so you scan the situation far ahead to spot problems. And yo usually avoid the right hand lane to stay out of merging traffic. You follow a slowmoving pickup truck in the left lane for a few moments and then decide to move over to the center land and pass the truck on the right. You signal, look over your right shoulder to be sure there isn’t anyone in your blind spot, change lanes, and start to accelerate. Having a great time. Left to right: Naveen Mundanda, Liz Rubin, Scott McKee Chow down! Happy RATS help themselves to the buffet dinner. www.rat-pack.com But suddenly a car in the left lane passes you and swerves into the center lane without signaling. You roll off the throttle and swerve right, barely managing to avoid a collision. The car squeezes between you and the truck and roars away. You see the driver glance at you in his rearview mirror, so you know he saw you. You’re incensed that a pushy driver would threaten your life by such a reckless pass. It’s always smart to look far ahead in traffic, but you must maintain your awareness of other vehicles all around you, not just in front. If you monitor the traffic behind you, you can spot road sharks, like the driver in this story, weaving through traffic, frequently changing lanes. If you can see a car accelerating toward a slowmoving vehicle in its lane, you can predict that it will suddenly change lanes, so you can stay out of its way. Hough, ©Bowtie Press 2001 March 2010 5 Triumph ParkinGO European Series On The Road Again The Art of The Deal Will Ammutt I hope I’ll never be like Donald Trump I A month after the agreement between Infront Motor Sports and ParkinGO by Oasi Handling Group, an exciting new championship on the international scene was born: the Triumph ParkinGO European Series which will allow 24 riders to compete on Europe’s best circuits alongside the stars of the Superbike World Championship riders. The Triumph ParkinGO European Series is the result of the cooperation between BE1 Racing and the iconic British motorcycle manufacturer Triumph, which will provide 24 of its class-leading Street Triple R motorcycles for the challenge. Participants can also take advantage of BE1 Racing’s factory team riders, who will use their expertise to advise participants on the circuits and riding technique, to help them find the most effective racing strategies. The Triumph ParkinGO European Series truly is a unique experience that gives racers of all levels an opportunity to enter the 2010 Superbike World Championship as competitors. BE1 Racing and Top Ride companies will manage this competition sponsored by the UEM, which has allowed BE1 to turn it into a European Championship. The bikes to be used are the Triumph Street Triple R, which organizers will hand over to teams along with the complete racing kit before each race starts. The championship will be held within 7 races of the World Superbike Championship on the following dates: 1. 2. 3. 4. 5. 6. 7. 11/04/2010 – Valencia – Spain 25/04/2010 – Assen – Holland 09/05/2010 – Monza – Italy 27/06/2010 – Misano – Italy 01/08/2010 – Silverstone – England 05/09/2010 – Nurburgring – Germany 03/10/2010 - Magny Cours - France The race weekend program is based on two official sessions, one on Friday and another on Saturday, and the race on Sunday at 2:30 pm, before the second race of the Superbike World Championship. The winner of the ParkinGO Series will have the possibility to participate as a wild card in the last race of WSS in Magny Cours with the official bike Triumph Daytona 675 of BE1 Racing Team, as Chaz Davies’s team mate. n 6 RAT Tales Newsletter ’ve mentioned before that there are a couple of motorcyclists in my neighborhood and, during the warmer weather when one or the other of us is working in the garage with the door open, it is not unusual for the others to stop by as they pass. We each have different styles and brands of motorcycles. What accounts for the differences of our choices? Neighbor #1 is a middle-aged family man. He’s lived in the neighborhood for almost as long as I and during that time he’s probably had about eight or ten different bikes and, most of the time, he’s owned two bikes simultaneously. His regular ride has only changed once since I’ve known him but his second bike is rarely kept for more than a year. These second bikes are usually more specialized rides. Neighbor #2 is a neighborhood anchor. He’s been here since the first homes were built. He has only one bike and has had it for quite a few years. He likes this motorcycle but it doesn’t seem as important to him as our bikes to either of the other of us. He is about my age and, like me, a grandpa living on a fixed income. He bought this motorcycle because he and his wife had one when they were younger and they like to go out for rides together in the summer. Sweet, huh? Predictably, he bought the same brand as he had in his youth although the engine is significantly larger and the bike more comfortable and reliable. Discounting the Disco years, I’ve only been riding since 2006 and my Big Twin is the only motorcycle I’ve owned. I bought this motorcycle because I love the look of it and it takes me back to my college days when I had a British twin. They feel just right, you know? That isn’t to say that I might not add something else to my garage in the future but it won’t be at the expense of my current bike. I like it for emotional and aesthetic reasons and don’t intend to replace it. While the two grandpas’ are content with their rides our “younger” friend goes through motorcycles like grain through a goose. His regular ride is a bit mundane. I can say that because it is not a Triumph and he will never read this (hopefully). Without getting into branding, let’s just say it is more about image than performance. I’ll leave it to you to guess the manufacturer. His second ride is a bit more fanciful. Right now it is a dual sport, his second consecutive one as it happens. It is equipped with all the whiz-bang extras and you’d expect that he would be departing any day for Baja or Argentina to follow in the footsteps of Che’s Motorcycle Diaries. The closest he has been to off-road is the grass in his yard. Before his adventure rider persona, he had a very fast and racy-looking bike. Like the serial dual sports, it was the second time he had purchased a sport bike. This motorcycle was far from ordinary. It had fancy headers and tuned exhaust. It wore special tires. The paint was tricked out. The motor was breathed on by a local speed shop. You’d expect that he would be departing any day for Laguna Seca or Daytona to follow in the footsteps of Nicky Hayden. The closest he has been to competition is the line for a Grande three-pump white mocha at Starbucks. Ride it there, park and admire. So one recent dreary day as we stood in my garage listening to music and staring at his latest bike in the driveway, I asked him, “Why do you buy and sell so many of your motorcycles?” It was then that I got an answer that surprised me. While I was into bikes for the nostalgia and the beauty, for him it was all about THE DEAL. To make money on the sale of a motorcycle was the objective and, if he could enjoy riding it, so much the better. He pointed out that he had ridden many more motorcycles and of different types than I had in the same number of years. Well, slap my face and call me silly! That approach to riding had never occurred to me. Maybe I was the poorer for the lack of the experience. Tying this all together, it got me to remembering a quote attributed to Donald Trump, “Deals are my art form…That’s how I get my kicks.” It’s simple if you think about it. I am into it for the sake of the bike and my friend for the sake of the deal. He may truly get a greater variety of rides but I ride art for art’s sake. Besides, I don’t want a comb-over. n www.rat-pack.com 2010 Triumph Dealer Meeting By Janice McCarthy K elly and I did not plan on attending this year’s dealer meeting. The cost of the plane ride, the hotel, and the shuttle seemed a bit extravagant at this time. Our Triumph area representative tried to talk us into going, but we held firm. Then his boss called us and tried to put not- so -subtle pressure on us to attend, but again we held firm. Then a week later he called back and asked us to attend as a personal favor to him. Since our relationship had become more than just business acquaintances, we felt we could not ignore his request. As it turned out we are glad we attended for more reasons than one. The 2010 Triumph Dealer Meeting was held at the Marriott Grand Lakes Resort in Orlando, Florida. The first day of the meeting consisted of a general session and reception. The second day we were introduced to the new models of motorcycles. Mostly for 2010 it will be just special editions of the bikes that already exist. There was really nothing brand new especially since the 2010 Thunderbird had already been introduced early. The Rocket Roadster coming in March is considered to be the other new model for 2010. Triumph will be also be unveiling special editions of the Thruxton, Speed Triple, Daytona 675, Thunderbird, and Bonneville. In addition, Triumph is also bringing in a T100 Bonneville in all black –something they haven’t had before. If you have any interest or know someone who does, in any of the special editions, please contact us. Some of the special editions are in very limited quantities and will only go to the dealers that have live deposits. Triumph hinted that there will be brand new 2011 models coming out in the fall, but did not want to make those public at this event. In the evening, the dealers were treated to a buffet dinner and award presentation. There were actually only 5 awards given out this year. We knew we had a slower year due to the economic conditions (especially with Oregon’s high unemployment rate) so we were not expect- www.rat-pack.com ing any awards. We did finish in the top 10 in Triumph sales, but still not high enough for an award. After they gave out the 4 awards, they announced that they had a special award to present. Because Triumph was celebrating being back in the US for fifteen years, they said they wanted to recognize the Top Performing Dealer over the last fifteen years. Jim Callahan of Triumph then announced our names. He presented us with a wonderful plaque sporting a Bonneville badge. That was why the Triumph Sales Manager was so eager for us to attend! They wanted to present us with that award and wanted to make sure we were there to receive it. It is quite an honor! There are a lot of people who have contributed to our success, but we mostly have all of you to thank. I know we have the best Triumph owners right here in Oregon! So a BIG thank you to all of you and our wonderful employees for allowing us our moment in the spotlight. Another highlight of the conference was Kelly getting the chance to chat with Simon Warburton from the UK. He is the Triumph Product Manager. Kelly spoke with Simon for over 30 minutes in the Exhibition Hall regaling him with all his wonderful ideas for bike improvements, new models etc. Then it was time for lunch. We headed out to the patio and saw our fellow dealers from Tacoma and Spokane. We sat down with them and lo and behold Simon Warburton was sitting there as well. I am sure he thought as he saw Kelly sit down that he was done with that chap having already listened to him! To the contrary, he seemed genuinely pleased to be hearing all the ideas the three dealers at the table had to offer. He took copious notes. That made the conference for Kelly – to be able to have the ear of the person actually in charge of production listen to his ideas. Triumph is certainly staying for the long haul. They told us that they will go from 18 models currently to 23 in just two years. We are excited to be a part of their growth and so glad to have you along with us for the ride! n March 2010 7 13705 SW Farmington Road Beaverton, Oregon 97005 CLASSICS INCORPORATED Preowned Motorcycles ST J U E D!
