BLOOD ON THE
LEAVES

This is the Pittsburgh premiere screening
of the feature-length survival crime drama
Blood on the Leaves.
The story centers around an urban youth
who is grappling with the sins of his past as
he buries a body far from the city in an old
Pennsylvania logging plot. In the midst of
digging a shallow grave, a falling tree injures
him and pins him to the ground. A nearby
bow hunter, startled, drops his bow and runs
towards the sound of the fallen tree. The
hunter is unable to move the massive tree
or free the city boy. Just as he is leaving to
find help, he stumbles across the covered
body. The city boy pulls a gun on the hunter,
and they are locked in a standoff, alone in
the middle of the woods.

a special event with Steve Cuden, author of
Beating Hollywood:Tips for Creating Unforgettable Screenplays. The event will feature Steve
Cuden’s seminar, “The Three C’s of Screenwriting: Character, Conflict and Catharsis”
and includes a copy of Cuden’s Beating
Hollywood for all attendees. Cuden currently
teaches screenwriting at Point Park University and has been writing scripts and educating
students for over two decades.

As we walk around our cities, we often forget to notice the people around
us and miss out on chances to connect. A nametag says “I am open. I want
to talk to you.” It adds an element of humanity to our day, breaking down
an invisible barrier between us.
June 4 is National Nametag Day, a day when everyone in the city is invited
to wear a nametag. There will be two two stations in Pittsburgh: Outside

Oscar Micheaux was the first major African-American feature filmmaker, and produced more than
44 films during the silent cinema era through the mid-1950s. Many of his films were open, blunt,
and thought-provoking regarding certain racial issues of that time. Body and Soul, perhaps his best
known film, is a direct critique of the corruption and dishonesty among the clergy of his day. He
cast singer, actor and activist Paul Robeson in his film debut in dual roles as an escaped convict
posing as the minister of a Southern black church and as the convict’s upstanding brother. Made
by a black filmmaker for black audiences, the film has an almost entirely all-black cast and crew.
Paul Robeson, the son of a minister who had been an escaped slave, had attended Rutgers University and distinguished himself on the concert stage. Robeson appeared at the request of Eugene
O’Neill in his plays All God’s Chillun Got Wings and The Emperor Jones, also starring in the 1933 film
version of the latter work. He made a handful of other films, notably singing Ol’ Man River in Show
Boat (1936), but his leftist political views aroused great controversy, and he made his final movie
appearance in Tales of Manhattan (1942). He continued his concert career in Europe through the
1960s and has become an outstanding symbol of black consciousness and pride.
Jasiri X first burst on the national and international Hip-Hop scene with the powerful hit song
Free the Jena 6, which was played on more than 100 radio stations and was named Hip-Hop Political Song of the Year. His debut album, American History X, was named Album of the Year at the
Pittsburgh Hip-Hop Awards. A six time Pittsburgh Hip-Hop Award winner, Jasiri recently became
the first Hip-Hop artist to received the coveted August Wilson Center for African American
Culture Fellowship. A founding member of the anti-violence group One Hood, Jasiri started the
1Hood Media Academy to teach young African-American boys how to analyze and create media
for themselves.

On May 31, 1986, Judas Priest fans were
filmed in their natural environment, a concert arena parking lot in suburban Maryland.
Thirty years later, Heavy Metal Parking Lot
is considered among the greatest rock and
roll documentaries ever recorded. Once
found only via underground tape trading,
Heavy Metal Parking Lot launched a “parking
lot genre” that continues to resonate today.

Heavy Metal Picnic focuses on the 1985 Full
Moon Jamboree, a weekend field party bacchanal that took place at “The Farm,” home
to a cast of colorful characters who lived
and partied alongside unamused neighbors
in the McMansions of Potomac. The Full
Moon Jamboree, an affair so raucous that it
made the evening news, was the farm party
to end al farm parties, and much of it was
recorded using a home video camera and a
stolen CBS News microphone swiped from
the Reagan Inauguration earlier that year.
Twenty-five years later, we revisit the scene
and meet the people behind the party, as
well as the musicians who performed there.
