Tweed Heads South Public School Newsletter ~ Educating our students for their future not our past ~ Website : www.tweedhdest-p.schools.nsw.edu.au Email : [email protected] Term 3 Week 4 Address 10 Heffron St, (PO Box 6290) Tweed Heads South NSW 2486 Thursday 9 August 2012 Tweed District Athletics Tweed Heads South students are in winning form lately with our Basketballers, Touch Footballers and now our Athletics champions shining brightly at District Level. Coming Events Our Field Event Specialists excelled last Wednesday in a memorable day of Discus, Shot Put, Long Jump and High Jump. Lachlan could not wipe the grin off his face after he wiped the smile off his opponents’ faces in the Discus, throwing a whopping 18.86m, defeating his nearest rival by 2m! Inside sources have reported that he is throwing a lot further than that after a little technique training with highly acclaimed coach - Mr Nicholls. Monday 20 August School Photos Other Tweed South Champions to progress in the Field Events were Coreen (Discus), Rachael (Shot Put and Discus) and Kyah (High Jump). Phone: 07 5524 3408 Fax: 07 5524 3466 Friday 17 August Jeans for Genes Day Thursday 23 August Koori Olympics Friday 24 August Book Week Parade Friday 24 August Rugby League Gala Day On Friday it was the runners’ time to shine with the 100m, 200m and 800m events being held in perfect conditions. Our Senior Girls (Kyah, Sasha, Rachael and Tawana) and Junior Girls (Zoe, Jasmin, Summer, Leahlani) Relay Teams demonstrated our school’s depth of talent with both teams progressing to the Zone Carnival. Jasmin, Zac, Kyah and Noah all showed their individual brilliance to dominate their finals and progress to Zone also. It is a huge honour to represent our school at all these sporting events and Tweed South have built a great reputation within the district for our talent, sportsmanship and ‘never give up’ attitude. It is extremely important that we continue to demonstrate these qualities so that we continue our climb up the sporting ladder and show respect within our community. Renee Coble, Gaie Hickey, Tina, Kim, John (Grandpa), Ana Johannsen, Leteisha Togo, Mrs Sherriff, Mr Gill, Bec Dixon, Yvette Mackenzie and Annette McAllister all provided transport to and from the events. You saved our families hard earned cash and we trust that our students showed you the appreciation you deserved. A special mention must also go out to our lovely Tina Hicks. Not only does she cook the best lunches for our kids every day but she organised and transported our tents and tarps, she supervised our kids between events and she provided some inspirational coaching for our kids when they needed it most. You’re a legend Tina and we’re lucky to have you. Congratulations to all students involved and good luck to the students representing our school and district at the Zone Carnival next week. Tim Chalmers - Sports Coordinator From the Principal’s Desk We just seem to have finished one exciting and informative day with our Careers Market Day before moving into another opportunity for parents to come along for some fun at school. This year the book week theme is “Champions Read” and we hope to see lots of champion readers dressed as characters from their favourite books on Friday 24 August. Photo envelopes have been sent home. The school photographer will be here to snap mementos for students and their families. All monies need to be pre-paid on or before Photo Day, which is Monday 20 August. Family photo envelopes are available from the Front Office. Congratulations to all classes on the efforts that they are putting into their class work. I have been so impressed with the application to learning of our students. If parents would like to see a snippet of what students have been doing then check out our website— www.tweedhdest-p.schools.nsw.edu.au or just google “Tweed Heads South Public School”. Each classrooms has a suggestion box for any ideas you or family members may have. Miss Toop—SRC Coordinator Guess whose legs these are?? Let’s Launch into Literacy! This week students have been focussing on prepositions in class. Prepositions are the words that indicate location. Usually, prepositions show this location in the physical world. Check out the three examples below: The puppy is on the floor. The puppy is beside the phone. The puppy is in the rubbish bin. On, in, and beside are all prepositions. They are showing where the puppy is. Prepositions can also show location in time. Read the next three examples: At midnight, Jill craved mashed potatoes with grape jelly. In the spring, I always vow to plant tomatoes but end up buying them at the supermarket. During the marathon, Iggy's legs complained with sharp pains shooting up his thighs. At midnight, in the spring, and during the marathon all show location in time. Because there are so many possible locations, there are quite a few prepositions. Any students that circle the correct answers below and hand them to Miss Smith or their class teacher will receive a gold ticket. Which of the following correctly completes this sentence? She was sick ____ her dog’s naughty behaviour. because of by as Which of the following correctly completes this sentence?
