Legacy Donor Spotlight:
NECA IBEW Local 701
Celebrating 14 Years of Partnering with Habitat
When the local electrician’s union became involved with DuPage Habitat for Humanity 14 years ago,
they probably didn’t anticipate being one of the organization’s largest donors. At that time, in 1998,
Habitat was building a few homes in Glendale Heights and needed a hand with the electrical work.
Flash forward 14 years, NECA-IBEW Local 701 has invested over $530,000 and engaged over 120
volunteers to bring light to DuPage Habitat for Humanity homes. This makes NECA-IBEW one of
only two non-government donors to have given over a half of a million to DuPage Habitat.
“NECA-IBEW has been extraordinary. When we piece together the cash and in-kind support we
need to build every family’s home, it is a great relief to know the electrical service is being provided and
will be done excellently. The words ‘thank you’ do not convey the level of gratitude we have for this
group,” says Sarah Brachle Wagner, Executive Director.
Local 701’s Administrator, Doug Sandner, says the Union has benefitted as well. “The residential
market has taken a hit in the last few years. The Habitat homes have provided our apprentices with
needed training opportunities.”
DuPage Habitat recently completed an 11-home neighborhood in West Chicago, which was wired by
NECA-IBEW Local 701 apprentices. Dave Sivesind was one of the apprentices who turned out on
multiple occasions.
“When I went to a Habitat dedication and saw one of the homeowners get their keys, and heard them
talk about what it meant to them to buy a home, that sold it for me. If I can help someone get a better
chance in life, I’m in,” said Sivesind.
“It’s humbling to think about the time and the dollars that the Union has entrusted to us. It’s an honor
to have kept their faith and partnership for so many years. We are thrilled to recognize NECA-IBEW
Local 701 as DuPage Habitat’s first Legacy Donor,” says Brachle.
