Historic Gulf Prairie Cemetery at Jones Creek, Brazoria
County, established circa 1833.
A successful Quarterly Meeting of The Sons of the
Republic of Texas was enjoyed by many members and
guests, thanks to the hard work of the Stephen F. Austin
Chapter #6, Angleton. Friday afternoon guests toured
the Gulf Prairie Cemetery, where Stephen F. Austin
was first interred after his death on December 27, 1836.
The historic Texas cemetery is adjacent to Peach Point
Plantation. At the Friday evening dinner at On the River
Restaurant, Freeport, attendees heard a special program
on the Texas Navy, presented by honorary member
Michael Bailey. After the Saturday morning Executive
Committee meeting at Holiday Inn, Clute, a delicious
barbeque lunch was catered at the Stephen F. Austin
Statue in Angleton, where members and guests learned
about “Artillery of the Alamo,” presented by honorary
member Dr. Gregg Dimmick; thanks to the Stephen F.

will be mailed to you for a fee of $20.00 this year. If
you would like it mailed, please send the fee to the
National office.
• Those members that have not paid their 2013 dues are
now considered delinquent and must pay a $50.00

• Please note that any applicants for membership in
the SRT must have 3 signatures of recommending SRT
members. There has been a problem with the
signatures from chapters. If the applications are not
signed and I have to send the application to the chapter,
it may take up to an additional month to receive them

state, but every applicant should affiliate with a chapter.
This does not mean that they will have to attend
meetings. Application must be typed and notarized, and don’t forget the check.
• The editor welcomes all submissions of news articles
and photos for The Texian. Please submit electronic
data using the following guidelines. 1. Submit text in
WORD document format; articles may be edited due
to space limitations. 2. Submit photos as separate
attachments in .jpg,.eps,or .tif format. Caption for each
photo must be included in the WORD document, wither
before or after the article’s text. Identify the placement
of people (e.g. L-R, center, front row, back row, etc.),
with a corresponding key that matches the name of
the photo file attachment (e.g. file name Photo 1, Photo
2, etc.). Please limit the number of photos submitted
per article.
• I would like to thank you for the articles and pictures
you are sending for your newsletter; they have been
GREAT. I need YOUR help with articles and pictures.
If your chapter has or will be celebrating any events,
PLEASE email me at: [email protected]. I will be
submitting the October issue for publication; the
deadline for submissions is September 26, 2013.

Matching Campaign “Honor Roll of Donors”
The Sons of the Republic of Texas would like to thank and recognize each of the members and friends listed
below for their very generous gifts in support of the annual programs which promote our historical, educational
and patriotic purposes, mission and goals.
The generosity of the members and friends surpassed the goal to match $25,000, donated by a wonderful
member of SRT.
Each year, SRT gives a total of $11,000, for the Educator of the Year Award, the Presidio La Bahia Award, the
Summerfield G. Roberts Award and the Texas History Essay Contest Award. Every dollar donated by members
and friends helps to perpetuate these important programs.
2013
Texian Navy Day
SRT now has just above $50,000, which will fund the annual awards for several years.
One generous donor underwrote all the cost for the stationery, envelopes and postage related to promotion of
the matching campaign.
Honoring
Thank You for your continued support.

Building Fund Recommendation
Years ago, a Building Fund was established for the purpose of building or purchasing a Headquarters for The
Sons of the Republic of Texas (“SRT”). Due to various concerns with real property ownership, The SRT Executive Committee has voted several times against following through with the original plans, and it is unlikely that
such plans will take place any time in the foreseeable future. The Sons of the Republic of Texas Foundation,
Inc. (“the Foundation”), recommends to SRT that those funds, now held in trust by the Foundation, be repurposed for other programs or contingencies and no longer be earmarked as a Building Fund. At the discretion of
the Foundation, the funds would be transferred to current account(s) held by the Foundation, so that benefits can
be derived.
Additional information will be published in the October 2013, and January 2014, issues of The Texian. If the
SRT Executive Committee is agreeable to this proposal, and if the general membership votes in favor of the
final recommendation at the 2014 Annual Meeting, any contributor to the original SRT Building Fund will have
the opportunity to submit a written request, with proof of his or her original contribution amount, in order to
request a refund of the original principal amount. If approved by both the Executive Committee in December
2013, and the general membership in April 2014, deadlines for submissions of refund requests will be published
in subsequent issues.

SRT Book Exchange & circulating Library
This program started in 2008 and has been underutilized for a few years. We would like to see the program
reactivated. The reasons this program started are:
• a member has a Texas history book that he no longer needs or wants;
• rather than placing it in a garage sale or otherwise disposing of it, the member brings it to a SRT quarterly or annual meeting;
• a frontispiece is provided by SRT acknowledging that the book has been donated by the member
• any member interested in the book takes it home to read and return at the next quarterly or annual meeting, hopefully bringing some of his used Texas history books to donate to the library;
• the SRT Circulating Library can work at the chapter level, too; for chapters meeting on a regular basis, a chapter president could request a small supply of the frontispiece labels from the SRT Headquarters and promote the program at chapter meetings, encouraging chapter members to bring their unwanted Texas history books to the next chapter meeting and put them into circulation within the SRT.
(L-R) President General David Hanover, KSJ, and Daughters of the Republic of Texas President General
Karen R. Thompson, at the 122nd DRT Annual Convention at the Holiday Inn, Beaumont, immediately after the May 16, 2013, Opening Ceremony. President General Thompson proudly displays “The Daughters,
A Dozen Decades of DRT,” the third and most recent history book of the organization since its formation;
the book’s publication was one of her primary goals as President General. Congratulations to Retiring
President General Thompson!

Each donated book becomes the property of The Sons of the Republic of Texas and will be used in a
circulating library, available during quarterly and annual meetings.
If you need a label for your book, please contact Janet at the office. Labels will be available at quarterly and
annual meetings.

In and Around Texas
July 4, 2013, Houston, TX, San Jacinto Chapter,
Historian’s Report
Early today, over one dozen vehicles arrived at the graveside setting for Mary Smith McCrory, wife, and,
Anson Jones, the last President of the Republic of Texas, who died on Jan. 9, 1858. Attached herewith are
most of the names of our San Jacinto Chapter, SRT guests, members and Volunteers with The Texas Army
commanded by Gov. Rick Perry and Gen. Sam Houston IV, Commanding.
Twenty-three attendees, most in 1836 period uniform, assembled beneath a great sheltering pair of sweetgum
trees near the Glenwood Cemetery at Anson Jones’ and Mrs. Jones’ marked graves, found adjacent to a State of
Texas Historical Marker, to hold a Wreath Laying Ceremony.
A Welcome by San Jacinto Chapter, Houston, SRT Historian James E. Mitchell greeted attendees, followed
by the Pledges to the Flags of the US and Texas. Tom Green III was invited to offer greetings to all and to
historically connect the July 4th Independence Day Celebration ties with Anson Jones, the last Republic of
Texas President, who died January 9, 1858.
Anthony Emmitte, The TX Army Color Guard Capt., appears with
raised sword in front of the Anson Jones Family graves at Glenwood
Cemetery, 2525 Washington Ave., Houston, TX.
Kameron K Searle, J.D., our San Jacinto Chapter, Houston, Master of Ceremony, invited Lieut., Gail
Thompson, Texas Navy and Texas Army volunteer, Julie Bailey to present floral bouquets to the graves of Mary
McCrory Jones and her husband, Republic of Texas President Anson Jones. The San Jacinto Chapter, SRT
Wreath was presented by chapter historian.
Mr. Searle narrated, Anson Jones’ veteran service as a Private in the Volunteer Texas Army at the battles of
San Jacinto on April 20 & 21, 1836. An overview of Anson Jones’ friendship with Gen. Sam Houston and the
(officially unclassified) secret strategy of The Philosophical Society of Texas, (organized on Dec. 5, 1837) that
met in the Capitol in Houston in order to assimilate its chapter membership along philosophical lines to gain
admittance into the United States and win over American Congressional support for annexation of Texas to the
United States, may have surprised attendees.
Following the 25 minute talk, Texas Army Col. Anthony (Tony) Emmitte commanded a black powder firing
party (17) musket salute and ordered The Texas Army volunteers, to silently salute and to “Mourn Muskets,”
which they did beautifully in unison!
A prayer was volunteered by Ralph A. Hoeting, San Jac Volunteers that sent us along in remembrance of the
Anson Jones Family, US Independence and The Texas Army Gen. Carroll “Curly” Lewis, Jr.
