Modified Race Report
DeLorenzo notches modified win
By RON SZCZERBA
Fonda Speedway
FONDA — It was a busy week
of racing at the Track of Champions,
Fonda
Speedway, with
three races in a
seven day period
for the modified
competitors and
when the modified feature event
was completed on Saturday
evening it was Matt DeLorenzo
who was celebrating in victory
lane with his two little girls as
well as the rest of his family and
his crew.
For DeLorenzo, it was his second win of the season in the BBL
Companies #3D Teo car and the
36th of his career at Fonda in the
modified division.
"This feels awesome and I need
to thank my family, my crew, and
all of the 'Matty D' fans that come
out to watch us every week and
come in the pits to see us as well,"
DeLorenzo said in victory lane. "I
was trying to conserve my tires
and keep the momentum up on the
outside hanging it all out there and
riding on the edge."
Other winners on Saturday
evening at Fonda included Mark
Mortensen (602 sportsman),
Kenny Martin Jr. (pro stock), Rob
VanAernam (street stock), Ken
Hollenbeck (single cam 4-cylinder), and Kerrie Hollenbeck (dual
cam 4-cylinder).
Fonda Speedway legend Dave
Lape started the 30-lap modified
event on the front row and led the
first two laps before Alton Palmer
took over the point on a restart
after a caution flag slowed the
event on lap three.
Danny Varin started the event in
the seventh position and on the
restart made a great move to get
up to the second spot with Ronnie
Johnson now third after starting
sixth.
On lap four Varin was the new
race leader after just nipping
Palmer at the finish line to complete the lap with Johnson also
getting Palmer for the second position as DeLorenzo was also
making moves to the front after
getting by Lape for the fourth
spot. Five laps later DeLorenzo
got by Palmer for the third position at the same time that Jim
Davis took the fifth spot away
from Lape.
The Leader-Herald/James A. Ellis
Matt DeLorenzo poses with his daughters in Victory Lane after winning the modified feature June
22 at Fonda Speedway.
The red flag was out on lap 12
after something broke on Lape's
car and he ended up hitting the
wall in turn one and then flipping
over and landing on his roof. Lape
was able to get out of the car on his
own and walked to the ambulance
for observation.
An update on Sunday morning
from Dave's wife Jackie who said
that Dave was taken to the hospital
last evening and a CT scan was
done to make sure that he had no internal injuries. The scan showed no
internal injuries but Dave was stiff
and sore. Jackie also said that Dave
was out in the garage telling the
people who were there to help him
strip the car what to do so that was
a very good sign. She also said that
the motor plate on the car was
cracked and the front and rear of the
car would need to be re-clipped
from the damage.
It took three tries to get the race
restarted and when it was DeLorenzo and Davis were the new
third and fourth place cars while
Johnson got by Varin for the lead at
the line to complete lap 15. Varin
didn't let Johnson get away and on
lap 17 retook the lead on the inside
of the backstretch. The caution was
out with 10 laps to go when Johnson stopped on the backstretch just
after smoke started pouring from
the race car in turn one.
Varin and DeLorenzo were side
by side for the lead on laps 21 and
22 with DeLorenzo able to get the
lead away from Varin on lap 23 on
the backstretch.
One more caution flag slowed the
event just after DeLorenzo took the
lead but when the green flag came
back out DeLorenzo pulled away to
the victory.
Friesen took the second position
away from Varin on the final lap
coming down to the checkered flag
with Davis, and Mike Mahaney
completing the top five at the finish.

602 Sportsman Race Report
The Leader-Herald/James A. Ellis
Mark Mortensen poses in Victory Lane after winning the 602 sportsman feature June 22 at Fonda Speedway.
Mortensen claims sportsman win
By RON SZCZERBA
Fonda Speedway
FONDA — An exciting 602
sportsman feature began with
rookie Connor Cleveland taking
the lead at the
drop of the green
flag to start the
20-lap event. An
early caution on
lap six slowed the field when
Tony Farone slowed in between
turns three and four.
Mark Mortensen started the
event in the seventh position and
on the restart got by both Tim
Hartman Jr. and John McAuliffe
for the second position and at the
halfway point of the event the top
five consisted of Cleveland,
Mortensen, McAuliffe, Rocky
Warner, and Hartman.
Cleveland was protecting his
lead on the bottom of the race
track while Mortensen was hanging it all out on the outside with
the two side by side for the lead on
lap 11. On lap 12 Mortensen took
the lead on the outside of turn four
but Cleveland wasn't about to give
up as he retook the lead on the inside of turn four with only five
laps to go.
Mortensen continued to keep his
momentum up on the outside and
took over the lead again on lap 16
with Cleveland whose car was
good down low not letting
Mortensen get away. With three
laps to go Cleveland went into
turn two too low and bounced to
the outside of the track allowing
Mortensen to get away for his second win of the season and the
ninth of his career in the division
in the Jumpin' Jack's Drive-In
sponsored #1M Teo car.
Warner took the second spot
away from Cleveland on the final
lap with McAuliffe and Hartman
completing the top five.
"The first couple of weeks this
year we were fast, but we lost it
after that," Mortensen said in victory lane. "I have to thank Erik
Nelson for all of his help this
week along with my crew, family;
friends that come and watch me
race every week, and my sponsors. The #09 (Cleveland) was
fast on the inside and my car was
good on the outside, so it was a
real good race."

Pro Stock Race Report
The Leader-Herald/James A. Ellis
Kenny Martin Jr. poses in Victory Lane after winning the pro stock feature June 22 at Fonda Speedway.
Martin captures pro stock victory
By RON SZCZERBA
Fonda Speedway
FONDA — Gus Hollner led the first two laps
of the 20-lap pro stock feature event until
Kenny Martin Jr. made a three wide move down
the middle of both Hollner and
Luke Horning on the front
stretch for the lead just before
the caution came out with
Kenny Gates and Horning
both going to the hot pit area under caution.
They were both able to continue at the rear of
the field.
Three wide moves were being made throughout the field as Jim Normoyle went in between
two cars for the third position on lap four while
defending track champion Pete Broderson got
by Normoyle, Chuck McSpirit, and Hollner for
the second spot one lap later. At that point Martin held a straightaway lead but that was all

Martin maintained the lead on the restart with
he and Broderson both pulling away from the

the season and the 47th of his career at Fonda
over Broderson, Normoyle, Walt Brownell, and
Dennis Joslin who started the event in the 20th

"I am so excited this was such a great weekend," Martin said in victory lane. "I have to
thank my crew for working so hard on this car
after winning last night at Albany-Saratoga, my
car owner Bob James, and all of my sponsors
because without them, I wasn't going to be able
to race this year. Fonda Speedway builds cham-

Note: This list is composed of
the high point track champion
in Fonda’s headline division,
which was Modified in 1948
and 1968 to present, and
NASCAR Sportsman from 1953
through 1964. In 1965, 1966, and
1967 the Modifieds (M) and
Sportsman (S) raced together,
but separate points were kept
and two track champions declared.
