The island has an area of 9,251 square kilometers (3,571 square miles) and a coastline of 648 kilometers (402 miles). • Population: Around 850,000 • We have a President (currently Nicos Anastasiades who was elected in 2013) a Parliament of 56 MPs (they are elected every 5 years) and local authorities for every town and village. OUR ISLAND REMAINS DIVIDED SINCE THE TURKISH MILITARY INVASION IN 1974 CYPRUS – THE SITUATTION TODAY Even though Cyprus officially became an EU member state in 2004, 37% of the island still remains under Turkish military Occupation (since 1974) CYPRUS – THE SITUATION TODAY • Around 200,000 Greek Cypriots are note permitted to return and live in their family’s home in the Turkish occupied area. • Several hundreds of person’s are still missing since the invasion in 1974 and their fate is unknown. • A small number of Greek Cypriots that chose not to abandon their homes because of the invasion remain trapped in the Turkish occupied areas. THIS IS LIMASSOL – THE CITY CLOSEST TO US LIMASSOL • Limassol (Greek: Λεμεσός , Lemesós ) is the second-largest city in Cyprus, with a population of 239,000 (2011). Limassol is the biggest Cypriot port in the Mediterranean transit trade. Limassol is famous for its long cultural tradition, and is home to the Cyprus University of Technology. Therefore children attend school from 7:30 a.m. till 4:00 p.m. Conventional elementary schools in Cyprus work from 7:30 a.m. till 1:05 p.m. The extra hours that pupils spend at school are used for including English and Computer lessons in the curriculum (starting from the 1st grade) as well as for sport, dancing and completing their homework. Pupils also get a 50 minute lunch & rest period at midday. This timetable is applied for 4 days a week (Monday, Tuesday, Thursday and Friday).
