GUN MARINE SERVICES
“WARREGO”
Nothing symbolises Yanmar’s capability
in the commercial market better than the
commissioning of the new flagship for Gun
Marine Services, the Warrego. Powered
by dual Yanmar 6AYM-GTE engines, the
24.95m LOA offshore support vessel is by
any measure an impressive engineering
achievement.
Built by Armada Ships in WA, the Warrego
is very much a small, purpose built ship. At
49 tonnes displacement and with a beam of
7.5 meters, this work boat can carry a deck
load of up to 30 tonnes yet still operate as a
semi planning vessel. It has accommodation
for 14 passengers plus a crew of 4.
Gun Marine Services (GMS) is based in
Exmouth WA and prides itself on being a
locally focussed company. Established in
1978 with just three staff and one vessel,
GMS today operates a fleet of 5 vessels and
55 on the payroll.
The company provides shipping services
to the oil and gas industries. This includes
personnel transfers, cargo transfers, ad hoc
supply runs, environmental monitoring and
other investigations required by oil and gas
companies.
GMS vessels are permanently based at
Barrow Island and provide environmental
services for Chevron. Other companies
serviced by the fleet include Woodside, BHP
and Fugro.
The Yanmar powered Warrego will operate
as a true multi purpose vessel. Its tasks
include cover survey work, crew transfers,
instrument deployment and monitoring to
name a handful.
Due to the massive beam on the Warrego,
a full meter wider than most in this length
category, the engine room is vast with
ample space between the engines. The
engine room has full headroom of 2.1m and
an air-conditioning plant to keep the area
comfortable.
This pair of Yanmar 6AY marine diesel
engines develop 670 kW to deliver a
design speed of 17 knots at 70 per cent
load. With 15 tonnes on the deck,
Warrego can cruise at 15 knots
with a fuel consumption
of about 220 litres per
hour.
With 16,400
litres of diesel on
board, the vessel has
a comfortable cruise
range of 1000 nm.
The Yanmar 6AY series
offers clean (IMO Tier II
compliant),
economical
power from a 20.379 litre,
6 in-line cylinder block.
There are three variants in the
Yanmar 6AY series developing
659 mhp to 911 mhp.
Every aspect of the Warrego is impressive
and a credit to the owners who drew up
a comprehensive specification for the
designers, Southerly Designs of WA.
Throughout the vessel redundancy systems
dominate.
There are two desalination
plants, an air conditioning plant with three
independent compressors, triple gensets
and three control stations. The vessel has its
own sewage treatment plant on board plus
large fluid containment tanks to ensure zero
ocean contamination.
Project Manager Jeff Napier of GMS says
that the Warrego is a very untypical small
vessel and has the capability more usually
seen in 34 meter boats.

NEW PRODUCT
PSS SHAFT SEALS
Power Equipment has been appointed
the official Distributor of PSS Shaft
Seals in the Australian, New Zealand
and South Pacific markets.
Packless Sealing System (PSS) is a world
leading product which delivers superior
products for through hull shafts and steering
systems. With PSS seals available for shafts
from 95mm through to 150mm, there is a
PSS product to suit most pleasure and
commercial applications.
IAN MILLS
Under the new distribution arrangement,
Power Equipment has been able to revise
the price list to offer customers and end
users significant cost savings.
“This is a world leading brand and we are
delighted to have been appointed as the sole
authorised Distributor for our key markets,”
said Ian Mills, Marine Product Manager at
Power Equipment.
“Boaters of all description have had to
endure problems with installations where the
prop shaft or rudder pass through the hull
below the water line. PSS is a modern day
solution to an age old problem.”
“Through the use of modern materials and
precision engineering, PSS Shaft Seals really
do provide a dripless seal without the need
for constant maintenance.”
Power Equipment has committed to
carrying significant stocks of the PSS Shafts
Seals. The bulk of stock will be held at the
company’s primary warehouse in Lynbrook
(Melbourne) with quantities also held at
Coomera (Gold Coast) and Fremantle (Perth)
facilities.
Due to their unique design, the PSS seal
is an easy and convenient replacement
for traditional stuffing box. The system
comprises a carbon/graphite flange,
stainless steel collar and rubber bellow.
The PSS Shaft Seal is dripless, and therefore
eliminates the need to pump the bilge. And
since repacking a traditional stuffing box is
eliminated, maintenance costs are slashed.
By using a flange bearing made from
graphite, shaft wear is eliminated.

The conference, which was organised
by Brian Macken from our New Zealand
operation, provided an opportunity to
showcase to the dealers the head office,
facilities, stock support and infrastructure.
These facilities are dedicated to Yanmar in
Australia and New Zealand and also allowed
paticipants to be introduced to the new
8LV engine as well as brushing up on some
technical knowledge.
As the conference was tied in with a NZ
long weekend many of the dealer’s partners
decided to come to Melbourne to take up
the opportunity to visit some of the major
shopping centers and local sites while their
partners worked.
During the two days the dealers were given
various presentations on the different parts
of the business such as the Yanmar industrial
division, engineering, spare parts and the
opportunity for growth in the commercial
marine engine market.

THE NEW YH SERIES –
GENERATOR POWER UNLEASHED
The Yanmar range of diesel powered
generator sets has been expanded
further with the launch of the new YH
Series of 4 Pole, Three-Phase gen
sets. The range of five models delivers
premuium quality power generation,
from 12.5 kVa through to 45.0 kVa.
The CM7 control panel on the other models
in the YH Series is an advanced unit able to
control operation, monitoring and protection
of the gen set. While displaying complete
information about the status of the unit, it
allows the operator to control, program and
configure the functions of the YH gen set.
Engineered for stand-by power in all manner
of commercial situations, or as the prime
power source for industrial and construction
sites, the YH Series has been specifically
engineered to deliver clean, reliable electrical
power.
An emergency stop button is conveniently
placed on each model, for instant shut down
in an emergency situation.
The new YH Series is a complete range
which is both powerful and transportable.
With a large capacity fuel tank on all models,
the YH Series gen sets are totally self
contained and fully bunded.
At the heart of the Yanmar YH series of
water cooled generators is the world
leadingYanmar TNV series engine. This is a
robust workhorse from the Yanmar family of
water cooled diesel engines which meet all
current Australian emission standards.
The Yanmar TNV series is a sturdy 3 or 4
cylinder design that operates at 1500 rpm in
the YH Series gen sets for minimum noise.
Even under 75% load, the fuel consumed is
frugal, with as little as 2.72 litres per hour on
the YH170 gen set.
Yanmar and Power Equipment have a
commitment to diesel powered generators.
With the introduction of the Yanmar YH
series, this sees the Yanmar range available
in Australia grow from 2.2 kVa through to 62
kVa, delivering a comprehensive range for all
power generation applications.
At the base end of the YH series is the
Yanmar YH170. This model has a power
output of 12.5 kVa (prime rating power)
and a dry mass of 691 kgs and comes
with a complete set of power distribution
plugs. Other models include the YH220,
YH280, YH440 and YH550 delivering even
increments of power output to best suit
individual needs and applications.
Like any generator set, the YH Series from
Yanmar features excellent noise attenuation.
Whether out in the open, in a built up area
or contained in a building, this is the ultimate
“silent type”.
Although technically advanced, the Yanmar
YH Series gen sets are easy to operate. The
user friendly design features a simple turn
key start, which ensures that the YH Series
gen sets can be operated by people with a
range of skills and abilities, while at the same
time the simple operational procedures
make the YH Series ideal units for hire and
rental applications.

SYDNEY GTS 43 IS BORN
In 2011 the Sydney GTS43 was brought
to life by Mark Rowed and his team
at Innovation Composites for the
new owner of Sydney Yachts, Darren
Williams.
It is the only 3 blade folding propeller
operating with the same pitch in forward and
in reverse - the blades turn 180 degrees.
Therefore it has the same thrust in forward
and in reverse.
Sydney Yachts was very keen to develop
yachts with an international appeal but more
importantly, be built for the extreme Southern
Ocean conditions, The first of these new
designs is the fast, easy to handle, stable
and spacious Sydney GTS43 which serves
as a comfortable cruiser, short-handed
family weekender and competitive IRC racer.
It has an overdrive function, a second pitch,
which can be compared to the 5th gear in a
car. You use it when motoring in calm waters
or when motor sailing, and saves up to 20%
in fuel.
Innovation Composites had the first Sydney
GTS43 finished in time for exhibition at the
Sydney International Boat Show in July 2011
with three yachts being sold to date.
The first GTS43 was launched in June for
a Sydney owner, the second in October
for a Singapore owner and the third is due
for completion in early 2012 for a Hong
Kong owner all powered by Yanmar 3JH5C
engines with either 2 blade or 3 blade Gori
folding propellers.
The second GTS43, ‘Walawala 2’ has
just completed the Kings Cup in Asia and
finished a very creditable second place in a
very competitive fleet of contenders.
Sydney Yachts is aiming to have a Sydney
GTS43 on the race course for the Audi
Hamilton Island Race Week and also
expects to see this new model racing south
to Hobart and north to Coffs Harbour this
summer. The Sydney GTS43 brings an
exciting new phase for Sydney Yachts.
When it came to engine selection, the choice
was easy, Yanmar! Sydney Yachts has a long
association with Yanmar engines and Gori
propellers, something that was not going to
change with the new Sydney GTS43.
These benefits are well documented by
Hallberg Rassy, which use Gori propellers
exclusively on all their yachts because it has
the lowest drag of all 3 blade propellers,
fixed, feathering or folding. According to the
German magazine ‘Yacht’, the drag of the
Gori 3 blade propeller is 5 times less than the
drag of the 3 blade Volvo folding propeller.
When folded, this unique propeller does not
auto rotate but folds neatly in behind the P
bracket or saildrive leg. This is one reason
why performance and cruising multi hulls like
GROUPAMA III, IDEC, GITANA, SHIPCOVE
(Seawind) etc. all chose the 3 blade Gori
propeller.
All these are exclusive features of the 3
blade Gori propeller which will give the best
results with a Yanmar engine, whether its the
Sydney GTS43, or your boat that is being
used as a cruiser, family weekender or a
competitive racer.

YANMAR POWER OF CHOICE FOR
NEW STEBER TWIN CAB
ALAN STEBER
Up on the north coast of NSW, tucked
away in the idyllic riverside town of
Taree, the Steber family is already
gearing up for the surge of Australian
built fibreglass boats in the post GFC
era.
The latest new Stebercraft model that
typifies the positive outlook in boating and
Australian boat manufacturing is the Yanmar
powered Steber 3800 twin cab.
Unveiled at the Sydney International Boat
Show, the Steber 3800 Twin Cab is a new
model from Steber. This is a flybridge deck
moulding with new interior layout, the latest
in live aboard technology and a pair of
Yanmar 6LY3 engines in the engine room.
At the 2010 Sydney boat show Steber
fielded a lot of inquiry from families who
wanted a family cruiser with two cabins, but
not with the conventional island bed in the
bow cabin. They wanted to sleep up to six
without having to convert the dinette to a
bed by night (the island double bed in the
bow is an option).
8
The outcome is the stunning Steber 3800
Twin Cab. This new model has a front cabin
with four single bed berths, superior vee
bunk style bedding stacked one on top of
the other. This configuration delivers fixed
sleeping accommodation in two bedrooms
for six people.

only when at sea when
undertaking a lengthy holiday
voyage along the coast and
offshore, but also for weekends

Manufactured to comply with 2C Survey, the
vessel can legally sleep six and carry ten.

engine
is
a
turbocharged, direct injected, intercooled,
24 valve, in-line 6 cylinder displacing
5.813 litres to produce 440mhp (324 kW)
at 3300rpm. Weighing in at only 718kilos
complete with Yanmar’s purpose built
marine transmission, the 6LY3-STP delivers
industry leading power-to-weight Yanmar
diesel performance.
This is a boat that suits a broad range of
applications. In survey it can be a hire boat,
used for charter work or included in a boat
share scheme.
In any of these applications, the selection
of engines is of paramount importance.
Alan Steber is absolutely resolute when he
states that the Yanmar brand is his engine
of choice.
“Yanmar is not only my choice, but it’s also
the engine of choice of many key government
agencies across Australia.”
“The Yanmar 6LY3 is a superbly engineered
engine, that delivers it’s power smoothly,
efficiently and quietly. This is a drive by wire,
fully electronic engine that is easy to install
and easy for our customers to operate.”
The purpose built marine engine design of
the Yanmar 6LY3 engine series and their
renowned low fuel consumption are key
factors behind their success. Low fuel

The Yanmar 6LY3 features a high-technology
electronic control system that governs all
engine operations from fuel management
to twin engine synchronisation, gear shifting
and diagnostics.
The intelligent electronic control system on
the 6LY3-STP manages the fuel delivery
system and injection timing of the high
pressure fuel pump to dramatically increase
torque, improve fuel economy, reduce noise
at idle and particularly reduce fuel odour and
white smoke at start up in cold conditions.
Translated to on-water performance, the
twin Yanmar 6LY3-STP powered Steber 38

first attempt at game fishing.

realistic cruise speed of 21.0 knots, the Yanmars
tick over at 2396 RPM with fuel consumption
recorded at 40.1 litres per hour per engine. The
boat is fitted with a pair of 24” x 33” props.
With a big fuel capacity of 1500 litres, the Steber
3800 Twin Cab could run from Sydney to Brisbane
without having to re-fuel. Alan Steber has already
run the boat from Taree to Sydney and return, a
distance of 350 NM on a single tank of fuel with
plenty to spare.
In addition to the dual Yanmar 6LY3 engines in the
engine room, a single MASE 7KVa gen set is also
installed. This is a Yanmar powered, high quality
marine generator that delivers ample power for
all the on board needs from cabin lighting and
entertainment systems, all the way through to the
power-hungry needs of fridges and dishwasher.
Unlike some people who have to wait
many years for their first marlin, Terry
didn’t muck around, catching the fish midmorning after a 40-minute fight on 37-kilo
standup tackle. The fish was then tagged
with a New South Wales Fisheries tag and
a Billfish Foundation tag (they’re those
coloured pieces of plastic in the fish’s
shoulder, just below the dorsal fin) and sent
on its way to be caught another day.
Strangely, this marlin didn’t jump, but was
content to try and empty the reel with
sizzling surface runs, which no doubt tired
it out.
Terry’s boss at All Diesel, Grant Buck,
wasn’t so lucky. His day on the water a few
weeks later didn’t produce any bites, so it
looks like the workshop staff have bragging
rights over the front-office staff for a while
to come!

YANMAR NZ REPOWER
HOOKEM UP WITH THE BEST
It is quite clear from the name of John
Yorston’s Bertram 28, The Hook Em
Up, that in addition to exploring the
Hauraki Gulf and family cruising, he is
very passionate about a certain water
sport and when it comes to choosing
the right boat!
Just back from an eight day sport fishing
trip around the Great Barrier, the Mokihinau
Islands, Cape Brett and home, John was still
buzzing when we caught up with him recently
for a follow-up check on how his repower
with Yanmar engines was performing.
“From the day we first started them on the
land, the new Yanmar’s have not missed a
beat, they are smooth and have a low noise
level which is great when spending all day
fishing,” says John Yorston.
John’s original engines were twin 5.7 litre
petrol units which he described as great
runners but with a huge running cost it
had been severely restricting the use of his
beloved boat, Hookem Up.
Working with Sales Engineer Brett Millikin
in December 2011, John chose a pair of
Yanmar 4LHA-DTP - 200hp @ 3300 rpm
on traditional shafts with Yanmar KMH50A
hydraulic gear boxes, with a ratio of 1.67:1,
along with new shafts and props for a
perfect match.
“I had only ever heard good things about
Yanmar, so they were the first engines on
my list which grew to 6 or 7 options. After
a lot of talking and cross evaluation, Yanmar
came out tops”.
Owned today by the Ferretti group, the
Bertram brand was created around the 1960
Miami-Nassau powerboat race and marked
the birth of the modern powerboat with its
fibreglass construction, deep-vee design,
many with stern drives and relatively larger
engines for their time.
The Bertram 28 was designed in 1971
by David Napier and became one of the
company’s best sellers until production
ceased in 1994, after approximately 2800
were built. Being prolific in Oceania, and with
a reputation for a quality build, it makes them
strong candidates for diesel repower and
refit to deliver high performance standards.
John picked his up in mid-2011 and was
instantly impressed with the sea-keeping
andride qualities, which was exactly what
his research had indicated.
“I knew I had to get her at the right price
to make the engine transplant work” said
John when asked how the idea came about.
“I had been quietly looking for an upgrade
project for quite a while, you know under the
wife’s radar but had to get the mix of fishing
platform and R&R right”.
When it comes to the all important efficiency
question John reports that since the original
fuel tank fill, he has logged the hours
anddistance as a reference point – “my
first unscientific calc revealed 16L/Hr for
general cruising at 16-20 knots, then I got
an amazing 11.93 L/Hr from our recent 8
day trip which took us out of sight of land
many times, with a mix of fast stuff, trolling
and hanging on at 30 knots boat speed –
I have total confidence in my Yanmar’s,
basically we used 662 litres for 55.4 hours
which amazed me”.
The engines were installed by the Whiting
Power team at Oram’s Westhaven yard in
time for Christmas, with John working closely
with the team, upgrading other components
while the opportunity was there.
“Every day out has been a pleasure to turn
on the engines and have total confidence as
we venture out,” said John Yorston.
“I have to say they certainly seemed to attract
the Marlin, more so than our lures and live
baits, a great trip that will be repeated many
times over the next months - many thanks
to Brett, Mike, Ben & Scott for looking after
my project”.

JETWAVE’S TWIN YANMAR POWER
CUSTOM 5000PSI PRESSURE CLEANER
The
Adelaide
based
industrial
pressure cleaning specialist Jetwave,
has completed a custom made high
pressure cleaning unit based around
dual Yanmar TNV series diesel engines.
Designed and manufactured expressly for
telecommunications tower wash down and
cleaning, this Jetwave unit has an extensive
range of unique attributes. The unit is
mounted to a tandem axle, heavy duty trailer
so that it is entirely transportable.
At the heart of the Jetwave unit are two
Yanmar 4 cylinder 51kW TNV Series Engine
water cooled diesel engines. Individually the
Yanmar engines power two Italian Interpump
high pressure pump units, via a belt drive
system. Each pump is directly linked to
its own hose reel which delivers 5000 psi
of cold water, high pressure power. Two
engines, four pumps and four hose reels
equates to a massive cleaning capability.
The features continue. There is a large
capacity 1300 litre poly water cartage tank
mounted to the trailer. And for night time
operations, 360° LED working lights provide
even greater self sufficiency.
While this custom built unit has been
specifically produced by Jetwave for
telecommunications towers, there are many
varied applications that can be serviced.
Similar Jetwave units are commonly in use
in the mining, shipping and civil engineering
industries. Comparable Jetwave models are
already currently in use in the aviation industry
for ground support and maintenance, while
other units are used on oil platforms and
in the heavy transport industry.
According to Trevor Thomas of Jetwave, the
new pressure cleaner owes it’s considerable
capability to the Yanmar diesel engines.
“Right at the heart of the performance of our
monster pressure cleaner are two Yanmar
diesel engines,” Trevor said.
“While there is any number of diesel engines
available to us, we use Yanmar by choice.
Their water cooled engines add to unit
longevity, superior fuel economy and end
user value.”
“The Yanmar engines are smooth running.
The reduced vibration significantly lowers
the risk of frame distortion and potential
component failure.”
The Yanmar 4 cylinder TNV Series Engine
diesel engine is a four
cylinder
model
which
develops 69.5hp at 2500
rpm. Two inlet and two
exhaust valves per cylinder
improve air flow for greater
efficiency.

EC150 Engine Protection System. This gives
operators the peace of mind and confidence
to run the machine all day and all night, while
the monitoring of vital signs is at all times
managed by the EC150 EPS.
“With this Jetwave machine, the operators
can be way up in the air in a scissor lift,
so quick access to the engines should a
problem occur could take some time. The
EC150 EPS is a vital component within our
unit.”
Jetwave is an Adelaide based company which
specialises in the design, manufacturing and
customisation of quality industrial pressure
cleaning equipment. The company provides
innovative, tailored solutions to exceed
customer needs.
On the Jetwave unit, both

But while his days of offshore racing may
be behind him, Stefan retains a passion for

huge amount of attention.
This cat is like no other. It is lean, sleek,
opulent and hugely efficient.

And amazingly this giant composite
cat hull is powered by a pair of Yanmar
6LY2A-STP engines. The notion of these
modest production engines, producing
a comparatively tame 440 MHP each,
powering a 25.6 M (84’) boat weighing 26
tonnes is nothing short of staggering. Then
consider a top speed of 27 knots (50 km/h)
and the performance data takes on a new
dimension.
construction techniques to offshore racing
yachts headed up the project at the Stefan
Racing workshop.
Aptly named Hairazor by her owner, the
project commenced as a new build about
six years ago. But the owner’s business
floundered and Stefan picked up the partially
completed hull at auction.
Throughout the boat, efficiency is the
objective. Hairazor weighs in a 26 tonnes
dry, but a comparable fibreglass hull of the
same length would be around the 75 tonne
mark and require a pair of 800 hp engines to
achieve the same speed.
Bringing his wealth of offshore race
experience to the project, Stefan personally
directed changes to the hull and design. The
boat was stretched by 1.5m and the interior
was completely cut out and started over
with a revised layout. Then more subtle but
nonetheless vital changes were made to the
hull shape. The profile of the sponsons was
altered and the tunnel depth deepened.
Stefan was seeking the ultimate in hull
efficiency and buoyancy. Offshore sailing
legend Duncan Van Woerden, a man who
has brought his composite hull design and
“Hairazor is built to the same specification
and techniques as an offshore racing yacht,”
Duncan said.
“The hull is light but extraordinarily strong.
This is a fully epoxy construction with carbon
fibre, Kevlar and balsa used in the laminate.”
Nestled into the aft end of the sponsons
are Yanmar 6LY2A-STP engines, one per
side, ultimately turning 24” pitch, 5 blade
propellers; counter rotating of course.
Yanmar engines were specifically selected to
power this exceptional vessel. The Yanmar
6LY2A-STP engines came out in front of
competitive engines on the crucial power
to weight issue. The installation envelope,
(a vital factor when installing engines into
the narrow confines of a cat sponson) also
proved to be superior. And just as important,
overhead access for servicing made the
Yanmar 6LY2A-STP a sound choice.

In the performance stakes the Yanmar’s deliver the right kind of power. Hairazor
cruises comfortably at 2200 rpm for a speed of 17 knots, (31 km/h). With 4800
litres of diesel fuel on board, Hairazor has a cruise range of 2500 Nm. Flat out the
hull is good for 27 knots (50 km/h), a speed that can be sustained all day long
and one which has owner Steve Ackerie considering some inter-capital speed
record runs.
On board Hairazor is as opulent as it is impressive. Sleeping ten (including two
crew), Hairazor is white throughout the entire boat. From the stylish bridge,
through the lounge, staterooms and the
galley, white is the only colour used.
In the engine room a Mase IS20T gen
set provides all the on-board electrical
power. While there is an abundance
of LED lighting, electric doors, fridges
and the like, the boat is very efficient on
power. However, the air con system, an
essential for the Queensland climate,
demands the additional electrical power
from the Mase.

RUSSELL AND SONS
A PROVEN PERFORMER SINCE 1934
Russell and Sons was founded in Toowomba, Queensland
in 1934 by William John Russell, who recognised the
potential of the Darling Downs as a dairying area. He
first visited Toowoomba as a representative of the Alfa
Laval Seperator Company, and a year later he moved his
family from Sydney to establish the business selling dairy
equipment and associated lines. A year later, his son
Doug joined the business, and from 1936 the business
has continued to grow.
Today, Russell and Sons is still owned and run by the Russell
Family.
Their core business is still focused on the dairy industry, however
they now service and sell a much larger range of equipment,
including agricultural and domestic pumping equipment,
engines and power equipment, solar pumping equipment and
much more.
Russell and Sons has had a very long relationship with Yanmar
products, having sold their first Yanmar in the mid 80`s.
Mal Russell, who is the Managing Director as well as manager of
the workshop said “Yanmar is our number one brand of engine
and would account for nearly 90% of our diesel engine sales”.
Russell and Sons has full workshop facilities and can offer all
mechanical and application requirements to fulfil any engine
or pumping need. They are a fully authorised Yanmar warranty
Dealer, although Mal says warranty problems are very few and
far between, and are capable of all repairs and full rebuilds.
Russell and Sons has recently been appointed a full Sales and
Service dealership for the JCB range of Dieselmax engines
which are also distributed by Power Equipment and now feature
a JCB444IPU-TC which is sitting in stock on the showroom
floor along with several Yanmar engines. They also carry a very
comprehensive range of spare parts in stock so that there are
no delays in servicing any of these engines.
Power Equipment appreciates the commitment that Russell
and Sons has always shown towards Yanmar products and
now JCB Dieselmax. Through their dedication and loyalty to
their customers they, for many years now, have become one of
the leading Yanmar dealerships in Australia.

AT PICCANINNY PLAINS SANCTUARY
Piccaninny Plains, where the wildlife of
Australia and New Guinea meet, is at
the Northern Tip of Australia and is a
property of stunning ecological diversity.
It is jointly owned by Australian Wildlife
Conservancy in partnership with TLLFWildlifeLink. This is a region of global
significance for conservation, covering
more than 170,000 hectares (420,000
acres or 1700 km²), and is decorated
by a mosaic of rainforests, woodlands,
wetlands and grasslands and plays
an important part in protecting iconic
species such as the Palm Cockatoo.
Cape York has been connected to New
Guinea for much of the last 250,000 years.
The repeated interchange of flora and fauna
has bequeathed a rich biological legacy on
Cape York Peninsula and Piccaninny Plains
captures a superb representation of this
evolutionary blend.
• Magnificent gallery rainforest adorns the
property. One rainforest type is found
nowhere else in the world.
• The property contains the largest and
most intact tropical grasslands in the
high rainfall belt of northern Australia.
Elsewhere, these grasslands have been
destroyed by intensive grazing and
cultivation.
• Two of northern Australia’s most
important rivers meander across
Piccaninny Plains: the Wenlock River,
which boasts more fish species than any
other river in Australia, and the mighty
Archer River.
• A magnificent network of pristine
wetlands and the vast floodplain of the
Archer River are fed by rainfall of 1,600
mm (65 inches) every year, providing a
haven for migratory waterbirds
Its woodlands are distinctly Australian,
dominated by antipodean species such
as Eucalypts, Acacias and Kangaroos. In
contrast, the rainforests that thread their
way across the property have a strong New
Guinean flavour, supporting charismatic
species like the Spotted Cuscus.
However, Cape York and its wildlife are under
threat. Feral animals, including pigs, horses
and cats, are having a significant impact.
Cattle grazing is affecting sensitive habitats,
such as wetlands. A change in fire regimes is
also altering the structure and composition
of grasslands and woodlands.
Providing a critical corridor that helps link
the east and west coasts of Cape York
Peninsula, Piccaninny Plains contains a
remarkable diversity of ecosystems:
In the face of these threats, the Australian
Wildlife Conservancy (AWC) and TLLFWildlifeLink have been able to secure
Piccaninny Plains and are now acting to
protect it for future generation. Strategically

located adjacent to Mungkan Kandju National
Park, the conservation of Piccaninny Plains
will be a vital step in providing a secure future
for the wildlife of Cape York.
Australian Wildlife Conservancy have
chosen to purchase a Yanmar generator for
Piccaninny Plains and this is providing safe,
reliable power to staff with an eG140i 11kVA
Diesel generator. It provides power for their
fridges, cold room and deep freezers as well
as power to the house.
This genset is the latest in Yanmar’s inverter
power range and since installation last May,
over 4500hrs of trouble free operation have
been logged. The eG140i is powered by
the Yanmar 3TNM68 genspec engine to
provide long life, low noise and exceptionally
low fuel consumption. Enclosed inside a
steel sound proofed cabinet, the low noise
generated doesn’t disturb the wildlife whilst
the flat sine wave makes for safe reliable
power for sensitive electronics. It runs a
consistent 15hrs a day, 7 days a week, even
continuously during muster season when
there can be 8 staff plus up to 22 scientists
relying on it. Fuel consumption has been
recorded at 17L in 15hrs.
The Australian Wildlife Conservancy needs
help to carry out its active land management
program. Priority actions include developing
sanctuary infrastructure, removing feral
animals, fire management and conducting
strategic field research. Donations can

ANOTHER PRO FISHERMAN
PUTS HIS TRUST IN YANMAR
Rocky, a third generation trawler fisherman,
listened to the talk on the wharves and then
approached Craigh Hurst for advice. Craigh
Hurst is something of a legend amongst
professional fisherman along the NSW
coast.
ROCKY MUSCUMECI
Professional
fishermen
Rocky
Musumeci
of
Bermagui
knows
performance, economy and reliability
are essential when choosing a
commercial marine engine. When you
earn your living from the sea, safety is
the first priority and economy is a close
second.
When he and his father had their new fishing
trawler built four years ago, Rocky now
wishes that they had specified Yanmar from
the outset. Instead a competitive brand of
engine was installed in the 41’ trawler and it
just didn’t perform.
“The cost of running the old motor was
nearly sending us broke,” Rocky Musumeci
lamented.
“The original engine was only four years
old, was rich on fuel and gutless. I don’t
change engines for fun. When the boat is
not operating I don’t get paid so changing
the heart of the boat to a Yanmar was a big
decision to make.”
After discussions, Rocky placed an order
for the Yanmar 6CHM-HTE3 diesel engine.
When it came to selecting a commercial
fishing engine that would perform he could
not have chosen more wisely.
Yanmar’s refined 6CHM-HTE3 is a true
go anywhere commercial marine engine.
The proven package with a direct injected,
heat exchanged cooled turbocharger and
intercooled straight 6 cylinder engine pumps
out 170mhp at 2550 rpm at the flywheel.
Yanmar has actively promoted new fuel
technologies implemented in the 6CHHTE3, an engine that runs economically
and is IMO Tier 2 emission compliant with
no need for electronic governors or injectors.
The tricky engine transplant was achieved by
taking the side out of the boat alongside the
engine room. The old engine was removed
and the new Yanmar 6CHM was rolled in on
a makeshift overhead gantry.
Just as soon as Rocky’s trawler Consolato
was relaunched, the improvement was
immediately apparent. The Yanmar 6CHM
was using 6 litres of diesel an hour less than
the old engine, with plenty of torque to spare
thanks to the 6.494 litre displacement of the
6CH series.
“The savings to our weekly fuel bill is massive
thanks to the Yanmar. The engine will pay
off itself within a year or so. We couldn’t be
happier since I started using the Yanmar.”
“Not only is my Yanmar saving us money,
but the engine is also performing a lot better
than what I had. It’s doing the job easily
which is surprising considering I was quoted
less on the Yanmar than what I was for the
newer model of the brand that was giving
us grief.”
The purpose built 41’ trawler Consolato is
used all year round chasing king fish, blue
eye and trawling for prawns. From the time
he leaves port until he returns to the fishing
co-op, Rocky never shuts the engine down;
the Yanmar runs for ten hours a day, often
travelling up to 28 nautical miles offshore.
Yanmar purpose built marine engines are the
preferred choice for men like the Musumeci
family who make a living out of the sea in
all conditions. Yanmar marine diesel engines
are renowned for their low maintenance, low
operational noise levels and efficient fuel
economy.

MASE GENERATORS RELIABLE POWER
When you are at sea aboard your luxury blue
water cruiser, often 100 nautical miles or
more offshore for weeks on end, it’s essential
you have reliable equipment on board. One
of the most vital pieces of equipment is the
electrical generator.
The ubiquitous gen set is more often than
not buried in the engine room, expected to
power up on demand and deliver reliable
240 volt power at the flick of a switch. Just
as if you were at home on mains power.
For the owner of a big Riviera 48 based at
Bermagui, a recent MASE transplant has
brought a new level of power and confidence
to extended boating trips.
Professional skipper Graham Baker had the
misfortune to have the gen set on board his
client’s boat fail during the first night of an
extended five week offshore adventure. The
failure robbed the owners of a full week of
their long anticipated holiday while repairs
were made back at port.
“The gen set broke down when fishing the
Osprey Reef 120 nautical miles offshore,”
Graham Baker said. “The trip that he had
been anticipating for months commenced
with a major failure as we had to return to
Port Douglas. This was time consuming,
expensive and exceptionally frustrating for
the owner and his family.”
Like many gen sets installed in new boats,
the unit on board Georgie Girl wasn’t up to
performing at peak times. While it worked
okay most of the time, it simply wasn’t big
enough to handle the demands of extended
life on board in a tropical environment.
With the truncated Great Barrier Reef holiday
over and Georgie Girl back at her home port
in Bermagui, the research into gen sets was
on in earnest.
The solution came in the form
of finding the right unit to do
the job while at the same time
being a good fit into the engine
room. Plus finding the right
marine engineer who could do
the installation.
As it evolved the Yanmar
powered MASE I.S. 12 generator
set proved to have the capacity
and compact installation envelope to suit this
specific application. And specialist Yanmar
marine engineer Craigh Hurst at Bermagui
was the right man for the job.
“On board electrical power is all about
having enough capacity to drive all the
equipment,” said Craigh Hurst. “Too many
people make the mistake of calculating the
output capacity based on peak output. The
figure that counts is continuous load.”
On Georgie Girl, Craigh Hurst and Graham
Baker did their calculations based on the
assumption that the boat would operate
in the heat of tropical North Queensland.
With the air con running 24/7, lighting,
entertainment systems, fridges, freezers,
washing machine and dishwasher all
operating at the same time, the question of
capacity was soon resolved.
“I couldn’t be happier with my decision to buy
a Mase GenSet Generator. After my ordeal
at sea it really reiterated the importance of a
powerful, reliable generator.”
“The owner is a very happy man and can go
to sea with absolute confidence, thanks to
the new MASE gen set.”
The MASE I.S. 12 has a continuous
power rating of 10.2 kW with peak output
of 11.2kW. At the heart of the MASE is
Yanmar’s 3TNV 3 cylinder diesel engine.
Mase Marine Generators, powered by
Yanmar engines, feature low sound and
vibration levels, efficient size, and built-in
sound shields. Mase GenSets combine
practical design with Italian style.
The Mase I.S.12 GenSet is fitted with an
integral water to air intercooler assuring
the perfect functioning of the generator
independently
of
external
ambient
temperature. The alternator and the engine
will work at an ideal temperature optimizing
the performance and reliability of the
GenSet. This is particularly important in the
tropics where the temperature in the engine
room can hit 50 to 60 degrees.
“Now with the Mase Generator on
board I’ve got no such issues. It’s easy,
comfortable living on board,” said Graham
Baker. “Thanks to Craigh’s experience and
engineering skills, the MASE was installed
without any issues.
With Yanmar diesel-powered single phase
1500-RPM generators ranging from 2.0
kW to 35.0 kW, and 3 phase 1500-RPM
generators ranging from 9kW to 52.8kW,
Mase GenSets are powered by reliable
Yanmar diesel engines and cooled by an
exclusive Intercooler System. The GenSets
are designed and manufactured at Mase’s
headquarters in Italy.

YANMAR YET AGAIN
BASED ON EXPERIENCE
Peter’s first exposure to Yanmar came his
way when he bought a Seawind Resort
1050 cat, a second hand boat that had a
Yanmar diesel outboard in a centre pod.
Next came a Tasman C35, a hull built in
2003 and powered with two Yanmar 3GM30
saildrives.
PETER LYNCH
“That boat is still running well and the
Yanmar saildrives have over 8000 hours
logged,” said Peter.
Commercial boat owner and operator,
Peter Lynch of Blue Dolphin Tours in
Hervey Bay has been operating his own
charter boat business for a relatively
short time, but already he has owned
three boats, all Yanmar powered.
The latest and newest boat in the Blue
Dolphins tours fleet is a purpose built 38’
catamaran, with massive 22’ beam. The
luxurious catamaran, launched in May 2011
and built in Hervey Bay, was built to Survey
ID.
It’s no surprise then that Peter opted for
Yanmar to power his new custom built cat
out of Hervey Bay. His power of choice is
a pair of Yanmar 3JH5CE 39mhp saildrives
fitted with Gori folding props.
The Yanmar 3JH5CE engines are a naturally
aspirated, 3 cylinder, freshwater cooled
(heat exchanger) engine rated at 39mhp at
3000rpm.
Peter is an avid marine enthusiast and
boatie. He has over 27 years experience with
marine mammals, 13 of which were spent as
a marine mammal trainer at SeaWorld. Now
involved in eco-tourism, Peter established
Blue Dolphin whale and dolphin tours with a
wealth of first hand marine experience and a
passion for the wonders of the ocean.
18
The JH series range in saildrive variants
has three proven models in the range,
3JH5CE (39mhp), 4JH5CE (54mhp) and the
4JH4TCE turbocharged model at 75mhp. In
shaft drive configuration the range features
five models from 39mhp thru to 125mhp.
Based upon his previous experience with the
Yanmar saildrives in his second cat, Peter
chose Yanmar again. This time, in recognition
of the 6 tonne displacement, dual
Yanmar 3JH5CE 39mhp sail drive
diesel engines were selected also
in part due to the availability of a
flywheel generator which can be
specified on this engine model.
To round out the propulsion package and to
enhance the vessel manoeuvrability under
power and sailing performance, Peter also
opted for high quality three blade geared
folding Gori Propellers.
While the need for electrical power on
board is not significant, there is nonetheless
a legitimate need. Instead of relying on
a separate diesel powered generator for
onboard 240 volt power, Peter decided
on a Yanmar KMG65E flywheel generator
matched to the port side Yanmar 3JH5CE
engine.
“The flywheel generator has a maximum
3KVA output and works perfectly for me,
providing enough power for the fridge, urn
and microwave on board plus a small charger
for guests who need to charge up camera
batteries. I’d recommend it to sailboat and
power catamaran owners especially in the
charter industry.”
“What’s astonishing about the Yanmars is
that it gets the boat cruising at about 7.6
knots and I only use 20-25 litres of fuel per
engine per day. It’s quite incredible and from
a business perspective the economical
running costs are important to the bottom
line.” said Peter.
“I had Yanmars in my two previous tour
boats and was not disappointed, so when it
came to building a new boat I couldn’t look
past Yanmar marine engines.”

YANMAR PR FILM CREW
With the Yanmar 100 year anniversary
looming, Power Equipment was pleased
to work with the Yanmar PR Film Crew
from Japan on a project to view and film
several Yanmar product installations
and applications within Australia. We
were dutifully supported through this
journey by Sidath Weerakoon who
works with Yanmar Japan Finished
Products & Direct Trading Group.
Importantly, the scope for this project was
to capture the concept of Yanmar and their
customers in a partnership of “Solutioneering
Together” with Yanmar. The Yanmar film
crew was an absolutely professional group
that consisted of a team of five from the
producer, two camera operators, film editor,
translator and transport crew.
The task involved travelling to Jetwave in
Adelaide, Swan Reach (two hours northwest
of Adelaide), Clean Seas TUNA in Port
Lincoln and finally returning to the Power
Equipment Head Office in Melbourne - let
the journey begin!
First stop, Jetwave Industrial Equipment
in
Adelaide.
Jetwave
manufactures
commercial high pressure water blasters for
a number of specialised applications such
as drain cleaning and heavy commercial
surface preparation. Jetwave uses Yanmar
diesel engines exclusively in all possible
diesel engine drive high pressure pump
applications.
The group descended on Jetwave and
were able to bring together both still images
and video footage of an exceptionally busy
production line filled with Yanmar engines in
various states of completion. To the credit of
Roy Seco (Managing Director) and his team
we were provided every assistance to bring
this together.
Our second stop meant travelling to Swan
Reach on the Murray River some 170
kilometres in distance and 2 hours travelling
time north east of Adelaide. It was there that
we met with Peter Collins the cable ferry
operator for The Department of Transport in
South Australia.
This cable ferry recently received an
upgrade with the installation of a Yanmar
eG100i 7.5kVA Inverter Series Generator.
The generator was installed to replace the
unsatisfactory arrangement of batteries
and solar panels which were being used to
operate lights at night and air conditioners
located in the operators’ cabins. The
Yanmar Inverter Generator has now taken
over the job of powering the electrical side
of the ferry.
Our third stop was a short hop via regional
flight from Adelaide to Port Lincoln where we
able to meet with Marcus Stehr (Executive
Director of Marine Operations) and his crew
from Clean Seas Tuna.
Marcus Stehr with much deliberation and
planning purchased and commissioned two
Yanmar Net Cleaning Robots for use within
their fish farming operations in both Port
Lincoln and Arno Bay.
The Yanmar Net Cleaning Robots play a
key role in the control of weed growth and
subsequent reduction of parasite levels on
their sea cages which house mainly Kingfish.
Other benefits of the introduction of the
robots include less requirement to change
fouled nets which in turn has many benefits
such as less fish stress and significantly
less damage to nets through stretching and
abrasion when lifting from the water and
transporting to on shore cleaning facilities.
We were kindly treated to a visit of a sea
cage housing Kingfish being cleaned by the
robot in Boston Bay out from Port Lincoln.
The robot went through its paces under the
watchful eye and control of Lindsay Foote
who easily guided the underwater robot
through its cleaning duties. The end result is
nothing less than an exceptionally clean sea
cage as a result of its unique design giving
it the ability to clean both the inside and
outside of the cage in one pass of the robot.
YANMAR FILM CREW
CLEAN SEAS TUNA CREW
Before our final stop we visited Davey pumps
in Melbourne to view the production line
of fire fighting pumps using the LN Series
engine and talk to staff about the Yanmar
partnership.
Our last stop was Power Equipment in
Lynbrook where we were able to showcase
this extraordinary facility and those who
work within. Interviews were held with
several staff and importantly Allan Foster
(Managing Director) to gain an insight to the
inner workings of Power Equipment.
JETWAVE STAFF
Thanks to everyone that was involved, and
we look forward to sharing more stories
about Yanmar’s 100 year celebrations in the
coming issues of Power News.

E MARINE: BACK COVE 30
The Back Cove 30 is a magnificent boat,
boasting classic lines which borrow
heavily from the lobster boats which
once cruised the waters around Maine
in the US. This is a design where a
spoon bow, tumblehome transom and
a proud superstructure combine to
deliver a unique look.
Boating writer David Lockwood, recently
reviewed the Back Cove 30 in his Sydney
Morning Herald boating column, delivering a
rave review.
With the performance of the Yanmar 8LV
contributed significantly to the strong review.
The writer had previously tested the Back
Cove with the 315 hp Yanmar 6LPA, this
time around the additional 55hp of the 8LV
left David Lockwood very impressed.
“The upgraded 370hp V8 Yanmar is an
electronic engine that, like a heart transplant,
breathes new life into this lobster boat,”
wrote David Lockwood. As the author
noted, there was nothing at all wrong with
the ever reliable straight Yanmar 6LPA –
the difference is simply one between a
mechanical and electronic variant with an
extra 55hp added.
“Official data reveals that the top speed
improves from 26.7 knots to 28.8 knots at
wide-open throttle of 3800rpm, while the
cruising range is pretty much the same in
the higher rev ranges with the new engine.“
“But the big difference is the 3dBAto- 7dBA
reduction in running noise. That’s noticeable
to the ear, as is the smoothness of the V8
engine configuration. No truck-like diesel
clatter – the 8LV announces its presence
with more of a purr like a petrol engine.”
With twin turbos and common rail fuel
delivery, plus CAN-bus vessel control
systems, the Yanmar performed faultlessly.
Acceleration was noted as swift and smooth.
A comfortable cruise speed of 20 knots at
an even 3000 rpm delivers a cruise range of
about 300 nautical miles.
The Back Cove 30 is a high quality day boat
with appointments to impress. There is a full
size galley with all the gear needed to cook
up a feast. Elsewhere, there is a freshwater
WC with sink and hot/cold handheld shower.
The rear cockpit is the epitome of plush. And
for those who want to spend a long weekend
on the water, the front cabin readily converts
from day seating to sleeping for two.
