Proficiency awards recognize FFA members who excelled as agricultural entrepreneurs, employees or volunteers while they gained hands-on career experience. Swine Production-Placement is one of 47 FFA proficiency award categories offered at local, state and national levels. The Swine ProductionPlacement proficiency award program is sponsored by Phibro Pete Thome receives his National FFA award at Animal Health and Sunglo Feeds, as a special project of the the National FFA Convention in Indianapolis National FFA Foundation. A Successful Referendum Thank you to all who helped make our referendum a success. It took a team effort to get the information out to everyone in the district. Passing the referendum will allow us to keep our existing programs intact. I am reasonably confident that we will not be making budget reductions as we have in the last two years. I do believe that we still need to be cautious with our finances. For example, if we have a retirement or resignation, we have to consider whether we should replace that individual rather than automatically assuming that we should do so. Also, we have to be aware of natural reductions based on student enrollment or interest. These types of decisions, though, are much easier compared to what we’ve had to do previously. Thank you, community, for continuing to support Southland. - Gary Kuphal, Superintendent Celebrating American Education Week at Southland Language Arts Students Win VFW Essay Contest Pictured above are the VFW Essay winners. Back row: Brenna Nordeng, Shawna Lewno, Decker Bendtsen, Michelle Churchill; front row: Max Klingerman, Isaac Bustad. Students in Mrs. Wempner’s Language Arts classes recently competed in an essay contest sponsored by the local VFW chapter. The theme of this year’s essay was “Why I am an American Patriot.” Students had to compose five paragraph essays containing between 300-400 words relating to that theme. Each student who competed will be given a $2.00 bill by the VFW sometime before the end of the year. There were two winners chosen by a Southland staff member from each grade. The winners were picked based on their compositions, the theme, examples used, tone and the grammar/mechanics of the essay. The winners for each grade won a higher amount of money. Their essays were moved on to the regional competition. The winners from 6th grade were Max Klingerman and Michelle Churchill. The 7th grade winners were Decker Bendtsen and Isaac Bustad. Jill comes to class each day with a positive attitude and gets right down to work.” Freshman: Mark Engesser - “Mark is a very bright student in many ways. He excels academically with everything we do in class by putting in a lot of hard work and effort. He always has his homework done on time, and is always able to resist the peer pressure of moaning and groaning over the more difficult tasks assigned. He sets examples by always being respectful to everyone around him, by doing what he is asked, getting his work done, following the rules, and asking thoughtful questions to get his classmates to consider things from a different angle. I think that Mark deserves to be recognized for all of his accomplishments.” 8th Grade: Breanne Vogel - ”Over the years, Breanne continues to be a leader in her class. She is active in many sports and does well in the classroom as well. She is dependable, always having her work done on time and done well. Jackie is always one to remind others what page we are on to sing and is respectfully quiet when her section is seated while another section is working. Every day Jackie comes to choir prepared and ready to sing.” 6th Grade: Michelle Churchill “Michelle has had a solid first two months of school. She is excelling in my classroom and has been right from the start. She is a quiet leader who always follows the rules, has her homework in on time, is prepared, and uses her classtime wisely. The students were educated on the many facets of a volunteer fire department with the emphasis being fire safety and prevention. The kindergarten and first grade were visited by two firemen in full turnout gear and sirens blaring. It is a good idea for the young ones to see these strange uniforms now, just in case firemen would someday have to respond to a fire at their home. Grades two through five walked to the fire station where more firemen were waiting to give them a tour. Grade two witnessed a mock response to a fire as firemen entered the station, dressed, and left in the fire trucks. All the tools used by firemen to fight fires were demonstrated to the third graders. Each of the trucks and their functions were explained to the fourth graders. Some feel the fifth graders had all the fun because they were allowed to pump water from the trucks (handling the hoses was a challenge). We would like to thank the Rose Creek firemen, Al Mullenbach, Andy Felten, Craig Weis, and Jim Stratton, who volunteered their time to educate our students about fire safety! We really appreciate it! Dark Side of the Internet Presentation at Ellis Middle School Eric Szatkowski, Special Agent, Wisconsin Department of Justice, will present The Dark Side of the Internet: Sexual Predators of Children at Ellis Middle School Auditorium on Tuesday, December 4th from 7:00-9:00 PM. While the Internet offers a world of educational and entertainment options for young people, it also has a dark and dangerous side we must be aware of. This presentation on the online exploitation of children includes real-life examples and practical advice for anyone interested in the safety and wellbeing of our children. Topics covered include techniques used by predators, what types of kids are most vulnerable, and the importance of filters and monitoring software. Also covered is a discussion of the risks of online journals like My Space, and an eye-opening live demonstration of chat rooms. Due to the nature of this material, it is for ADULTS only. Mu Alpha Theta is Established at Southland High School We are excited to introduce Mu Alpha Theta to Southland’s extracurricular activities. Mu Alpha Theta is a nationally recognized organization whose purpose is to stimulate interest in mathematics and recognize students with superior mathematical scholarship. Mu Alpha Theta is recognized by the Mathematical Association of America, the National Council of Teachers of Mathematics, the Society for Applied Mathematics, and the American Mathematical Association of TwoYear Colleges. This means that membership in Mu Alpha Theta will look good and show your academic achievement in math on college and scholarship applications. To join Mu Alpha Theta, you must meet the minimum qualifications for membership. These are: Full Member: Completion of at least 4 semesters of college preparatory mathematics (Algebra I and Geometry) with a “B” average or above. Associate Member: Completion of 2 semesters of college preparatory mathematics. (May participate in all events but may not vote) In addition, members will be required to attend monthly meetings during homeroom and spend one half-hour a month helping in the tutoring program. Full Members: Class of 2008 - Brian Voigt, Andrew Schmitz, Katie Hoff, Heather Sheely, Eric Vogel, Tyler Hanson, Zach Felten, Jake Chapek; Class of 2009 - Josh Bamrick, Ashley Felten, Lacey Holst, Danielle Irvin, Hilary Johnson, Ella Noterman, Amber O’Connell, Bryten Reuter, Matt Schroeder, Scott Warnke, Whitney Yunker; Class of 2010 - Katie Barthel, Emily Howton, Jenna Juenger, Brooke Kinney, Krista Oudekirk, Christina Schmidt, Chris Vogel; Associate Members - Logan Vlasaty and Jill Eischens. Peer tutoring will be held on Wednesdays from 3:00 to 4:00 PM in Mrs. Sylte’s room, starting on November 28th. The tutoring is open to all students in grades 612. Return of the Bag Kids! Mrs. Lewis had a return of the bag kids! Just in time for parent conferences, students designed and created a bag to look like them. The nearly living replicas sat in their desks and parents were given the task to find which was a match to their child. The reward was a smile on their child’s face when they brought home the correct one. Notes from Mrs. Schmit, Southland Guidance Counselor SENIORS If you haven’t done so already, now is the time seniors need to be getting in those college applications. Remember that schools like Winona, U of MN and Wisconsin Universities have early deadlines. Don’t procrastinate!! Check out the scholarship binder in the media center. Students can look over the scholarships and decide which ones they are eligible for. They can then fill out the scholarship request form indicating the scholarship(s) for which they would like to apply and turn it in to Mrs. Schmit. Please allow yourself at least two weeks to complete the application, essay, and obtain any letters of recommendation, if necessary. JUNIORS Right now it is important for juniors to concentrate on two things: their grades and volunteer opportunities. The end of the semester will be here soon. Juniors are reminded that the cumulative GPA and class rank they have at the end of 11th grade is that which will be printed on the transcripts they send with their college applications next fall. The other task is for students to look for opportunities to volunteer! Many times the determining factor for scholarship recipients comes down to “What are they giving back to the community?” Volunteering to be a mentor for the Mower County Mentoring Program would be a great place to start! SOPHOMORES 39 Sophomores took the PLAN test. Mrs. Schmit will review the results with the students when they come in. Sophomore year can be a tough one for students. There is little room for electives because of the requirements. Hang in there! If students pass all of their classes – most of which are required classes – they will have room for more electives next year. If they don’t pass, then they repeat the required classes and have fewer electives. FRESHMEN The first quarter report cards were mailed out mid-November. Students and parents please remember that the final semester grade in January is what will go on their final academic transcript. If students don’t pass a required class they will need to repeat the class next year or at Austin’s summer school ALC program. Please make sure that students are attending class, putting forth their best effort and turning in assignments on time. If students are struggling with a class, let the teacher know. Help is available before and after school.
