In 2015, the budget of KSIF amounts to 12,815,000,000 won, 3,728,000,000 won
more than last year. As the importance of sending qualified Korean language
teachers abroad and online education methods is emphasized, the government
subsidy increased as much as 41% compared to that of the previous year.
In 2015, the development of a standard textbook and

also promoted. With the government’s subsidy and additional
corporate supports, projects to develop the Korean language and
culture education materials at KSI will also be conducted.

1. Improving institute facilities to make it a place you hope to
stay at as long as possible
KSIF expands the range of institutes subject to the facility improvement project.
To improve the education environment of the foundation institute
and to secure the uniformity of all KSIs worldwide as a major brand
of Korean language and culture education, the improvement project initiated for only 5 institutes in 2014 is extended to more than
20 in 2015. Those in Ulaanbaatar Mongolia 1, Tepic Mexico, and
Osh Kyrgyzstan selected in 2014 are basically subject to the facility
improvement project. The foundation will select more institutes in
March and initiate the project by June.
3. Transparent Support Fund Management - Examination of
Budget Management Among Local Institutes
Onsite investigation is implemented to check the current condition
of budget management among KSIs. By enhancing the transparency of KSI support fund management through budget management investigation, the foundation intends to improve the public
confidence of KSI projects and carry forward the support for KSIs
efficiently. Based on 2014 settlement reports, the foundation will
select about 10 institutes. While visiting local institutes, the foundation examines the local conditions of budget execution and management including one’s expenses and profits and comes up with
improvement plans by analyzing actual cases over various areas.
2. Institute Operation Consulting of Lesser Trials and Errors
and Faster Adaptation
The foundation promotes an institute operation consulting project
for sound operation of new institutes. Operation consulting is to
enhance understanding of new KSI projects and help their adaptation to the operation system by dispatching experts for a short period of time. The foundation planned this initiative to stabilize the
operation of newly designated institutes promptly. For common
challenges of new KSIs such as subsidy settlement and curriculum
operation, the foundation provides consulting service. For newly
designated KSIs in the second half year, an advisory panel that consists of accountants, Korean language education experts, etc. will
be dispatched to selected institutes. These advisory experts will
continue to provide managing and consulting service to institutes
after the planned dispatch on.

The fiscal year of KSIs is changed. To harmonize the fiscal year of
KSIs with that of the government, the foundation changes the fiscal year of the support for KSI designation and operation from the
existing period - March to February - to January to December. The
final settlement is finalized in January 2016. Once the fiscal year
of institutes is changed, institutes will be able to utilize the support fund in the promotion for class opening in March, and the
efficiency of institute administrative affairs will be enhanced since
the semester opening in March is not overlapped with the fund
settlement term.
1. You Name It! Everything You Need Is Here. Support for Korean Language And Culture Contents
The foundation provides more than 20 KSIs with Korean language
and culture education contents and by 2016 with the support from
NAVER Cultural Foundation. This year, the foundation selects 17
KSIs and provides them with education materials as much as 20
million won for each. The qualified institutes will be given Korean
books such as Korean textbook, dictionary, and Korean fiction as
well as video materials such as movie and soap opera and traditional culture experience tools as well. In addition, bookshelves
and storage closets also will be provided. The foundation will make
public the notice of qualifications for the support through the website of the KSIF(www.ksif.or.kr) in January.
2. Development of Performance Evaluation Procedures for
Intermediate Level Learners
For intermediate level learners at KSIs, added are the performance
evaluation items in each step of <Sejong Korean>. The foundation has developed and distributed reading/listening performance
evaluation items for intermediate level learners and performance
evaluation means for beginners in 2014 already, and in 2015, it
will develop speaking and writing evaluation items for intermediate level learners. Once speaking and writing performance evaluation items for intermediate level learners are developed, KSIs will
have completed its evaluation system for all basic courses from
the beginning level to intermediate level at KSIs. These step-bystep performance evaluation means are to evaluate the level of
achievements of learns to the learning objectives after one step of
the basic curriculum at the KSI. The foundation expects that this
evaluation will enhance the public confidence of Korean education
at the institutes by accelerating the education standardization.
1. Promotion Materials in Various Languages for Foreigners
The periodicals of KSI Foundation are published in English. The
foundation will issue newsletters of KSIF, which are released via
email on the first day every month, and magazine <King Sejong Institute>, a semi-yearly periodical, in both Korean and English from
2015 on. The foundation has decided to translate promotion materials in order to improve the awareness of KSIs and KSIF among
foreigners and make known the foundation projects to interested
ones at KSI operation agencies who are not fluent in Korean. Additionally, the foundation will produce foundation introduction
videos in English from March and post hem in the website of the
KSIF(www.ksif.or.kr). The foundation will provide translations of the
guidebook, currently available in Korean, English, and Chinese, in
five languages from 2015 on.
2. Korean Speech Contests Will Be Expanded Worldwide
KSI Speaking Contests are held for KSI learners worldwide. Speaking contests were held as a pilot project over European countries
last year, and the foundation will extends this event to all KSIs
around the world from 2015. From April to May, preliminaries will
be held at each KSI, and those who passed them will advance to
continental preliminaries to be held from May to June. The winners
will be invited to Korea in October and participate in the final round
during the Korean language and culture experience festival event.
3. The Foundation Operates Hangeul Hall at The Language
Show in October
The foundation participates in ‘The Language Show Live,’ the language fare held in London’s Olympia Exhibition Hall, London, the
U.K. from October 16 to 18, 2015, and operates Hangeul Hall. The
foundation displays various education materials, books, and design
items with Hangeul as the main theme at the fare, and it will conduct events where foreigners can experience Hangeul and Korean
language. In addition to making known Korean culture through
Hangeul and Korean language, the foundation expects that the
awareness of KSI and the foundation will be enhanced among
those interested in language education around the world.

to Support
KSI is an educational agency that teaches the Korean language and
culture to foreigners. KSIF has made known Korea to the world
through the 130 KSIs over 54 countries. The following is about how
KSIs are founded and what types of support they receive.

Operation
KSI is a major brand of the Korean language and culture education agencies supported by the Korean
government. Since the late 1990s, the number of
foreigners who moved into Korea for various purposes such as studying, marriage, and employment
has increased while Korean companies advanced
abroad actively. As a result, the demands for Korean language learning have increased as well. In the
2000s, Korean popular cultures such as K-pop and
K-drama became popular worldwide, and as a result, the number of foreigners who desired to learn
Korean and demands for Korean education abroad
increased drastically. In response to the rapidly increasing demands for Korean learning and to spread
the Korean language and culture to foreigners efficiently, the Korean government founded ‘KSI’ as a
major brand for Korean language and culture education in 2007.
In Korea, those who want to learn English would go
to the British Council, and those who want to watch
artistic French movies would go to France Council.
Likewise, those who are in a foreign country and
want to learn Korean language or culture would go
to KSI. Foreigners obtain information and develop
understanding of Korea from KSI. Currently, 130
KSIs over 54 countries are being operated.
KSIs are divided into three classes depending on the
designation type: First, Cultural Center KSIs operated by Korea Cultural Center. Korean language
courses in Korea Cultural Center are all designated
as ‘KSI’ without separate designation procedures.
As of January 2015, 27 Cultural Center KSIs around
the globe are teaching Korean to foreigners according to the standard curriculum of KSIs. Second,
under public organizations that manage overseas
branches such as Korea Tourism Organization and
National Information Society Agency, four Associated KSIs are being operated. As for Associated KSIs,
strategic designation is sought in cooperation between the foundation and public organizations. The
foundation strengthens its cooperation with related
agencies for public utilization of lecture rooms and
teaching materials abroad in order for efficient Korean language and culture education.
Third, common KSIs are designated through an official designation and examination procedure. Common KSIs are operated independently by a local
agency or in cooperation with a domestic agency
or an overseas public institute. In areas where there
is no Cultural Center or Korea-related public agency,
common KSIs function as a small Cultural Center.
The title, ‘KSI,’ cannot be used by other organizations without permission since it is a sort of brand.
KSIF, as an organization that supervises institutes,
presents an yearly notice about its plan for KSI designation at the website of the KSIF(www.ksif.or.kr)
and conducts the designation process over submitted applications.

founding entities are divided to those that intend to
operate a local KSI and domestic agencies that intend
to operate one in association with another local organization. A local operation agency abroad should be
one that currently operates or will operate a Korean
education center. Presently, governmental agencies,
colleges, or college-owned organizations are qualified
to apply for KSI designation. Non-profit making corporations or private organizations officially registered
at the government also can apply if they are conducting Korean education for public interests. Individuals
or private academies of Korean education for profitmaking cannot be designated as KSI.
Domestic agencies are same with those abroad. Domestic governmental agencies, overseas public institutes, local governments, colleges, and graduate
schools that are operating Korean education centers
abroad are qualified for application. Non-profit making corporations or private organizations that are operating Korean education centers for public interests
abroad are also qualified. Private institutes founded in
accord with laws regarding academy foundation, operation and tutoring are excluded from the examination.
Organizations desiring to operate a KSI need to operate Korean lectures at least 120 minutes a week, 30
weeks a year after designation. Lectures are to be
opened for at least 2 different levels such as for basic
and intermediate courses. As for financial operation, it
should be able to open a separate bank account under
the organization’s name, and the allotted support fund
should be separately managed through this account.
Facilities and employees necessary for institute operation also are to be secured in advance. Basically, two
lecture rooms, an administration department office,
and a reference room are required for the foundation
to operate an institute. A lecture room should be able
to accommodate at least 10 students, and a reference
room should have room for reading and stocking of
the Korean language and culture materials.
The institute’s director, operation agents, and teachers also need to be appointed for a KSI. The Institute
Director supervises the KSI as a general representative
and should be in charge of KSI operation in that local area. Operation agents should be fluent in Korean
enough to understand the foundation’s notices and
communication with the foundation and government
regarding institute reports.
As KSIs are a Korean language and culture education
agency operated with the governmental support, the
professionalism of teachers is of great importance.
Organizations desiring to be designated as KSI all
should employ professional teachers qualified according to the requirements specified by the foundation.
The foundation recognizes qualification as a teacher
when the applicant has a Korean language teaching
certificate, completed a Korean education as a foreign
language course as a major or a minor, completed a
Korean Language Teacher Education Program, or has
a bachelor’s degree or higher in linguistics or language
education fields with at least 1 year career of Korean
education.
The foundation conducts a basic document examination of forms submitted by applicant organizations especially regarding qualifications, demands for Korean
learning in that region, current condition of Korean
education agencies in adjacent areas, etc. For organizations that passed the document examination, an
onsite survey is conducted. In this step, there are interviews with the interested ones, operation agencies,
and teachers in that operation agency. Such factors
as accessibility to education facilities are examined,
and the documents prepared by each organization are
compared with the actual conditions of the facilities.
An organization designated as KSI is provided with
various supports from the foundation for operation
and education. In addition to the support fund for operation, a business management system for institute
administration operation and management is also provided. For an institute with old facilities, facility renovating funds are also provided for a better education
condition.
Supports for education itself are a crucial part. KSIs
around the globe have standardized curriculums, and
the foundation provides the standards for them. In addition, it provides teaching materials, guidebooks for
teachers, workbooks for learners, and performance
evaluation sheets as well. For regions where Korean
language teachers are insufficient, qualified Korean
teachers are also dispatched.
The foundation develops and distributes culture education programs to meet demands for Korean culture
learning among learners. A variety of teaching tools
that are necessary for culture experience but insufficient abroad are sent to local KSIs. For more thorough
experience of Korean culture, culture teaching interns
and experts are dispatched in cooperation with the
National Gugak Center, Korea National University Of
Arts, etc.
Self-training programs are also provided for teacher
re-education through Nuri-Sejong Hakdang in addition to various multimedia materials that can be utilized in classes. Additionally, teachers are given regional training opportunities and invited to World Korean
Educators Conferences to form a network among Korean educators, home and abroad. One student recommended from each KSI is invited to an opportunity
to experience Korean cultures.

In October 2014, those who were selected as outstanding learners at local KSIs
around the globe were given one-of-a-kind T-shirts as a gift. On the T-shirts was
their own names right beside KSI. Giving unforgettable gifts to learners at KSIs, Song
Seonghee, the representative of Ten Years After Lifestyle Research & Design, was
interviewed to hear from her the future of Hangeul, Korean language, and Korean
design that she expected.

Would you tell us a bit about the Korean
T-shirts project for outstanding learners?
This project originally began with a global
contest of T-shirts designs with Korean as a
main idea. I thought that when encountering
Hangeul, foreigners would get different feelings from when meeting Koreans. So I decided to conduct the Hangeul T-shirts global
contest from October, 2013. Back then, I was
thinking that it would be nice if KSI learners
could participate in the contest, and I happened to hear that learners would come to
Korea. So I prepared Hangeul T-shirts as a gift.
What do you think the T-shorts would
mean to learners?
It’s a Korean custom to treat guests from far
well(smiling). To some, this might be the first
experience of visiting Korea, and to some, the
last opportunity. So I wanted to give them
some special gifts.
I found that the designs of the 119 sets of
T-shirts were all different. It seems that
not one person made them. How many
designers worked for that project?
8 young designers worked together. Most of
them graduated from college recently and
have just started out in a career. Despite the
busy schedule at work, day and night as new
recruits, they voluntarily participated in this
project. They were not sure about whether
the work could be actually done because of
their hectic schedule, but finally, the 119 different designs were all completed.
Actually, I have searched a lot for Ten
Years After Lifestyle Research & Design
via the Internet, but I could find little information. Would you please tell us a bit
about ‘Ten Years After Lifestyle Research
& Design’ too?
Ten Years After Lifestyle Research & Design
helps members constantly look back the
works and behaviors, including clothing, eating, and living, and a daily life and turn the life
in a better direction. We call it ‘lifestyle research and design center.’
Many of the projects that Ten Years After
Lifestyle Research & Design has conduct-
ed are related to Hangeul. Is the Hangeul
Project an important part of ‘lifestyle research’?
I once raised white cabbages on the rooftop
of my house. If you killed one of the cabbage
worms living by cabbage leaves, cabbage liquid would come out of it. From this I learned
that what you eat is what you are. Not only
what you eat but also what you see, what you
wear, and what surrounds you are all part of
you. Language too. A set of letters are a house
that bears people’s thoughts. Hangeul is a
house that bears Koreans’ minds and cultures.
It is an environment surrounding Koreans. In
that sense, the Hangeul Project is an important part of the lifestyle research.

express yourself in a foreign language, your
thinking will end up being molded by it. The
Hangeul Project is a work of establishing a pillar of ‘me’ within myself.
What meaningful results have you gained
from this project?
Hangeul has been hardly touched even
though we always use it. ‘Hangeul’ may remind you of museum, national language policy, etc. It seems that we are stuck in some
type of public frame. In particular, the ‘Wearable Hangeul’ Project was initiated for us to
use Hangeul whatever type it may be such
as wearing, stepping on it, tearing, etc. rather
than making some beautiful creative works
with Hangeul. Expressing something by using Hangeul itself helped us realize its great
potential.
I hope that a symbol that we devotedly
attach to is created from us. Someday,
some Hangeul symbols will be finally born with
our spirit,mind, and soul of the times deep within.
What motivated you to initiate the Hangeul Project?
Sometime before the completion of Dongdaemun Design Plaza construction, Seoul, in
2012, I was in charge of some affairs related
to the coexistence with street vendors. For
the newly built, spacecraft-like building to coexist with street stands harmoniously, I was
appointed to newly design their handcarts
and plan things that could be sold around
that space. Thinking of items that could be
in harmony with the atmosphere without infringing commercial rights of these vendors, I
attempted to develop Hangeul design items.
Maybe because of that, the products of
the Hangeul project by Ten Years After
Lifestyle Research & Design’ seem very
friendly just like ordinary T-shirts that we
would use in a daily life rather than an
artwork. Do you have some principles or
standards for the Hangeul Project?
Spontaneity. Without a soul, no product can
actually reach people’s hearts. The Hangeul
Project is to draw out one’s voice from inside
by stimulating spontaneity. We are familiar
with expressing ourselves by using Western
What other plans do you have in the future?
The future projects too will focus on drawing out one’s voice from inside. In 2015, in
commemoration of the 70th year of the national liberation, I will visit Harbin and deliver
T-shirts works, with patriot Ahn Junggeun as
the theme, to Patriot Ahn Junggeun Memorial Hall. I think the theory of oriental peace
proposed by Ahn is of great significance to
the modern society. Just as the idea of Che
Guevara has become popular in terms of design too, I believe that patriot Ahn Junggeun
can be popular worldwide.
Lastly, would you tell us about the future
of Hangeul Design that you expect?
The other day, I heard the news that “I Love
New York” was ranked among the top 20 design logos in the world. I hope that a symbol
that we devotedly attach to is created from
us. Someday, some Hangeul symbols will be
finally born with our spirit, mind, and soul of
the times deep within. As long as we continue
to love Hangeul and make use of it to express
us, we will be able to see the world fully enjoy
it in the future.

My KSI That They Talk About
Many foreign teachers work at KSIs, teaching Korean to local students. Most of them began
as a Korean learner and then later became a Korean language teacher. Interviewed were
7 foreign teachers at KSIs who took one step further toward becoming a Korean language
teacher through the 7th KSI Korean Language Teacher Education Program. They talked about
the attractions of Korea and the significance of KSI.

To me, KSI is a dream
When did you first come across the Korean language?
In 2003, I was running a restaurant at the bottom of Mt.
Everest. My husband was a guide for mountain climbers.
One day, he guided the current Director of Kathmandu KSI
over the mountain, which was the beginning of our relationship with Korea. In 2009, as we transferred to Kathmandu, the capital city of Nepal, to educate kids, we started learning Korean language at Kathmandu KSI. In 2010, I
started teaching Korean to students in a lower level class
while continuing to study Korean myself.
How many Korean language teachers are there at
Kathmandu KSI? Including me myself, there are three
Nepali teachers and one dispatched Korean teacher. The
Korean teacher is so whole-hearted that she teaches me
Korean teaching methods even while having a meal for Nepali teachers to conduct Korean classes better.
Do you remember anything funny in your Korean
classes? Many Korean words are similar to Nepali Sherpas words in pronunciation. For example, ‘Moja’ in Nepali
Sherpas means socks, ‘Mangnae’ a bagger, and ‘Eobu’ the
eldest. If anyone says in a Korean class, “Jeoneun mangnae
imnida,” everyone laughs. The Nepali word for “be seated”
is pronounced “beoseo.” Sometimes in a Korean class, students are joking, saying “beoseo, beoseo.”
Certainly you often feel working as a Korean language
teacher is worthwhile, don’t you? Absolutely. Especially
when one of the students that I first taught at KSI in 2010
went to Korea to study in 2012, I really felt worth. By now,
he speaks Korean better than I do I guess.
How were the classes of the Korean Language Teacher Education Program? In Nepal, electric power is on and
off. For 6 hours a day, power supply is all shut. I had to stay
at the institute late at light to listen to online lectures after
the regular classes since I could not at home. Indeed, the
classes really helped. Through the simulation class, I found
that my way of teaching was quite different from others’. I
could correct mistakes that I made while teaching in Nepali.
What is your future plans? I would like to teach Nepali
fellows Korean language and culture well and contribute to
the development of Nepali culture.
To me, KSI is an exchange of culture
When were you first attracted by the Korean language? Since I was very young, I liked learning Korean.
I thought it would be easy because much of it was Chinese words. I entered the Department of Korean Language, Xian Foreign Language University, in 2009. But
in Xian, it was difficult to find a workplace related to
Korean. So I handled administrative affairs at a common
Chinese company for about one and a half years after graduation. In the mean time, I learned that a local
KSI was founded in Xian, and I quit the company and
started working as a Korean language teacher at the
institute from September 2013. While working at the
company, it was very challenging, but now I am very
happy every day.
So your dream came true, right? I guess that certainly makes the work highly rewarding. Yes, it truly
is especially when I see my students using Korean in a
daily life. Last month, I went to one Korean restaurant
with my students. I was really happy and thrilled to see
them ordering in Korean. They needed no help from me
there while doing that.
How do they view the Korean language in Xian?
By the time when I graduated from college, there were
few Koreans there, but it has been changed a lot. Since
2013 when the Samsung semiconductor plant was established in Xian, many Koreans have moved in and
many Korean restaurants and supermarkets have been
opened too. As a result, the number of those who desired to learn Korean has increased.
This is your first time in Korea. How do you feel?
I have watched so many Korean soap operas such as
<My Love from the Star>, <Heirs>, <That Winter, the
Wind Blows>, etc. It seems that everything is just like I
have seen in those videos. And I look the fresh air here.
Back in Xian, the air is not good because of fine dust.
I think that you have found a great difference between the Korean and Chinese cultures. Chinese
people do have a community spirit, but we never use
the word ‘our’ when stating a family member or a friend.
I was shocked to hear someone say ‘my husband’ when
I first came to Korea. I felt like it was weird. Koreans’
community spirit is special, and it has become a unique
culture of Korea.
How do you feel now after completing this Korean
Language Teacher Education Program? I am Chinese
and I teach Korean to Chinese students. I have never
conducted classes in Korean even once. In this Korean
Language Teacher Education Program, I learned how to
conduct classes in Korean, which was really great to me.
I wish I could have a class only in Korean someday.
Do you have future plans? I would like to teach students not only Korean language but also Korean culture.
I will work hard to make known the beautiful language
Korean to as many Chinese people as possible.

To me, KSI is zeal
How did you come to know Korea? I first learned
about Korea from one of my friends. I started learning Korean language in 2008 at a private language
institute. In 2011, after graduating from high school, I
entered the department of Korean language, Pakistan
National Foreign Language University. Looking at professors teaching Korean language zealously, I started
dreaming of becoming a Korean language teacher.
After graduation, I started teaching Korean at KSI in
August 2013.
When did you especially feel worth while working at KSI? I can see how much students understood
by looking through their homework. I feel really worth
teaching them when I found that they understood
what I taught. Once, I taught Korean to Pakistan public
officials. They were all far older than I was, but they
followed along while I was teaching them and said that
they liked my teaching, which made me really happy.
What do you think is the most attractive feature
that Korea has? Koreans always do their best. Teachers at KSI work hard from the morning to the evening.
I was attracted by such zealous attitudes.
Would you relate some of the Korean expressions
that Pakistan often make mistakes of? In Pakistan,
we put ‘Sahib’ after the surname when calling a person
in a respectful manner. So we often make mistakes of
putting ‘ssi’ or ‘nim’ after the surname when calling Koreans, for example, ‘Kim ssi’ or ‘Park nim.’ When teaching students, I let them note such expressions.
Did the classes of the Korean Language Teacher
Education Program help? After having a busy day
from the morning to the evening with preparing and
conducting classes, listening to online courses was
often very challenging. I attended every class of the
online course during the last two weeks, sleeping only
two hours a day. I feel it was worth the effort indeed.
While I had not had much experience, I learned a lot
from the classes of other teachers.
We look forward to your further advancement.
I am just 23 years old now and have many dreams.
First of all, I want to take a master’s course in Korea
with ‘Korean language education as a foreign language’
as the major. After that, I would like to come back to
Pakistan and contribute to the development of Korean
language education.

To me, KSI is the future
How did you come across the Korean language? When
I was in the fourth grade of high school, the department
of Korean language was opened at Adam Bernard Mickiewicz, which interested me. I entered that department in
the very first year of opening. Since the word order and
grammar of Korean were completely different from those
of Polish, learning that language was quite challenging.
Now I am taking the doctor’s course of linguistics at the
same university.
You were a Korean language student, and now you
are a teacher. Since 2008, I have taught Korean at the
school where I studied. In October 2013, KSI was established in Poznan.
What made you want to establish a local KSI even
though it would not be easy? After I first heard about
KSI from Arirang TV, I dreamed of founding a local KSI in
Poland Poznan. I even delayed the preparation of my doctor’s thesis and applied for the KSI designation by filling in
and submitting the application form myself. When I was
notified of the approval, it was the happiest moment in my
life ever. I felt a sense of heavier responsibility.
When do you feel most rewarding while working as
a teacher? There had been no private Korean language
institute in Poland and so no one could learn Korean except for those who majored in Korean at college until the
local KSI was established. I feel rewarding as I see now that
anyone who wants to can learn Korean. Even though there
was not enough time for promoting, 19 individuals applied
for the class in the very first semester. In the ‘Korea’s Day’
event held a while ago, 300 individuals participated.
Do you have your special ways of teaching? Once you
know what students are interested in, you can make classes more interesting. If the students like K-pop, let them listen to K-pop and practice listening and word memorizing
by filling the blanks of lyrics. If the students are interested
in Korean traditional culture, show them documentary videos and prepare class materials including quiz for them to
learn Korean cultures.
Do you teach cultural differences too? Some greeting
manners of Korea such as “Where are you going?” seem to
be difficult for Poles to understand. In Europe, people may
wonder, “Why is he asking about my privacy?” So I often
tell students going to Korea about such greeting culture.
What do you want to do in the future? I dream of making Poznan KSI a small Cultural Center that teaches not
only Korean language but also pretty Korean culture.

To me, KSI is an opportunity
I am wondering what made you decide to learn Korean. I like
what others would not do because I will have great chances. So
I entered Korean Studies & Korean Literature Department, Seoul
National University, after completing the bachelor’s course in Bangladesh.
What attraction of Korea motivated you to come to Korea
to study? The excellence of Hangeul. Bangladesh is proud of its
language as well. It commemorates the day of language independence from Pakistan as ‘the Day of Mother Language.’ I hope
that we too could have an institute to make known and teach our
mother language. It is wonderful for Korea to make known and
teach Korean language through KSI.
I heard that you would teach Korean even before coming to
the KSI. While working at an NGO operated by Koreans in Daka in
2006, I started teaching Korean at a Korean language institute that
belonged to the organization. In 2007, I entered Bangladesh EPS
center, and in 2012 when KSI of Human Resources Development
Service of Korea was founded, teaching Korean language became
my main work.
When did you feel most satisfied as a teacher? In 2013 when
a speaking contest in commemoration of the Day of Hangeul was
held in Daka KSI, 5 of the 7 winners were my students. I felt really
great. The other day, I heard that Shohak, one of my students, obtained TOPIK Grade 3 certificate, which made me very happy too.
What is your secret to teach students so successfully? When
teaching the grammar, I help students understand the context by
making example sentences rather than translating phrases into
Bangladesh words. This way, students can remember the points
longer and use them more accurately.
Did the Korean Language Teacher Education Program help?
It helped greatly. In particular, learning how to prepare teaching
plans was really great. I had conducted classes without a teaching plan before, and now with teaching plans, I can handle classes
more efficiently. Reviewing points that I had learned was also good.
What did KSI do to change your life? I had handled some administrative works before starting to teach Korean, but I found
teaching more joyful and fruitful. I am a bad daddy and bad husband who cannot play with my kid even on weekends because
of the weekend classes, but I am happy to be a Korean language
teacher. While teaching students, I myself learn a lot too. I would
like to come back to Korea with the scholarship for a master/doctor’s course.
When did you start learning Korean? I am the 4th
generation of Korean living here. At first, I did not speak
Korean. While going to church in 1991, I started learning Korean from the minister. I learned once a week
and started to interpret when I was 15 years old. Since
then, I wanted to become a Korean language teacher
just like that minister. So I chose Korean as my major
at college and studied Korean language at the graduate
school too. I wrote a thesis that compares the vocabulary structures of Uzbekistan and Korean languages.
Is Uzbekistan language similar with Korean? The
two languages have many aspects in common such as
word order. Those who speak Uzbekistan language can
learn Korean easily.
What feature of the Korean language/culture attracted you most? I like the beautiful, unique shapes
of Hangeul and soft sounds of Korean. The variety
of colors of Korean food is attractive too. Uzbekistan
food is not colorful. The distinctive and various colors
of bibimbap, kimchi, etc. are really impressive. One
of my friends wrote a thesis about the colors of Ko-
rean food. I would like to show or
teach students such aspects of Korean culture.
What difference is there between Uzbekistan and Korean
cultures? Greeting manners are
a bit different. Koreans bow down
when greeting, but Uzbekistan people do not. Instead, we greet with
hands on the bosom. When shaking hands, the older one extends his
hands in Korea while the younger one does in Uzbekistan.
When do you feel rewarding as a teacher of the
Korean language and culture? When students enter
a university in Korea or get a job as interpreters, guides,
and employees at a Korean company. Whenever my
students have their dreams come true, I feel worth my
efforts. In particular, I can’t forget one of my students
who got first place in the contest held by Sungkyunkwan University and entered that university.

To me, KSI is a challenge
I am wondering what made you major in Korean.
I was interested in Asia so much that I wanted to learn
Chinese and Japanese. But it seemed that Chinese characters were too difficult. After looking at Hangeul, I ‘mistakenly’ thought that Korean would be easy to learn,
and so I started studying Korean language.(Smiling) It
was such a mistake. Korean is never easy.
How do people in Czech Republic view the Korean
language? While I was studying Korean as a major, people in Czech Republic did not know much about Korea.
As large Korean companies such as Hyundai and Samsung advanced into Czech Republic and Korea’s popular
cultures were loved a lot here, people are aware much
of Korea now. In Czech Republic, Korean has great potentials because becoming an expert not of an adjacent
country but of an unfamiliar one can be a great advantage.
When did you start teaching Korean? Once, I taught
the language of Czech Republic as a foreign language,
but in 2008 while taking a doctor’s course, I started to
teach Korean.
Please tell me about the most memorable student
to you personally. I still remember one male student
who studied hard at KSI. He dreamed of getting a job in
Korea, and I heard that in spring of 2014, he found a job
in Korea and is now living in Bundang.
What do you think is the attraction of the Korean
culture? People in Czech Republic do not feel close
to relatives other than the family. Koreans care much
about the relationships with the family and relatives.
They share food and time together. I love such Korean
cultures including family affection.
What kind of difference have you found between
the cultures of Korea and Czech Republic? Czech
Republic is a country of beer. People in Czech Republic
drink beer just as if they do coffee so there is no need to
have side dishes except just some chips. Koreans have
a lot of side dishes while drinking beer, which is quite
different.
How was the KSI Korean Language Teacher Education Program? It was great. I forgot a lot of principles
of Korean teaching during my maternity leave, and this
was a good opportunity for me to recall the basic principles of various teaching methods.

The Strong First Impression of Korea
How did you come to learn Korean?
Hugh Australia is a multi-cultural country. I came across many different cultures through friends from various countries while living
in Sydney. I wanted to learn a foreign language. After thinking a lot
about it, I decided to learn Korean. I felt familiar with Korea because
I had many Korean friends.
Masharipova My interest in Korea grew because of friends. Currently, I am studying in Germany, but in fact, my hometown is Turkmenistan. I had many Korean friends living there.
Sarah I first learned about Korea through Japanese soap operas and
cartoons. While watching some Korean soap opera, I happened to
learn that the letters were matched with corresponding sounds. I
thought that Japanese was the same case until I found many Chinese
characters appearing, which made me give up. I was studying Japa-
KSI learners who represent each country were gathered at one place. I was wondering
about the image of Korea that they first had before and what impression they received
from Korea. Very late at night, there was an honest and heated discussion for two
hours. 9 individuals talked about their stories of ‘My Korea’ that they bore at heart.

Abril I first came to know Korea through Korean movies, not soap
operas. Since I was majoring in movies, I watched movies from various countries, and one day, I happened to watch ‘The Old Boy,’ which
was so impressive and shocking that my interest in the Korean culture started growing. Since Korea is so far from Mexico that it was
impossible for me to visit Korea. Instead, I would go to the Korea
Town and try Korean food. I also watched other Korean movies and
my interest in Korea grew further. At a certain point, I started learning Korean too.

Why Korea Attracts You
You have been learning Korean from 11 months to
5 years so far. It would have been impossible without affection or attachment.
Rohit I like the honorific form of Korean language. I like
when Koreans speak to the elderly politely with a respectful heart. It seems that such a culture of the honorific looks familiar since there is a similar form in Indian
too. I like such culture of speaking politely.
Masharipova Just as Rohit said, my mother tongue
Turkmenistan language too has the honorific and common form of language. So it was easy for me to learn
Korean. I liked the greeting culture of Korea too. Once,
I worked in Korea. When I went to a store or a shop,
the owner greeted me saying, “Annyeonghaseyo,” “Annyeonghigaseyo,” and “Ddooseyo.” I really liked it. It was
like they genuinely welcomed me.
Hugh I like K-pop. Especially music videos are amazing.
Korean entertainers in those videos look so cool and
attractive. Westerners might laugh at Asian pop music,
thinking that it is an imitation of their culture, but K-pop
shows that such thinking is completely wrong.
Qiantao That is right. I like K-pop too, but Korean soap
dramas are my favorite. While watching one soap opera
with a school as the background, I could compare the
school life in Korean with that in China. I have found
many interesting aspects.

What kind of difference have you found between
the schools in Korea and China?
Qiantao Well, for example, in China, students never
clean the classroom, but I found that in Korea, they do
after a class. They also change their shoes indoor for
cleanness, which is also different from China. The most
interesting was people’s attitude toward a performance.
In China, after watching a classmate’s performance, we
would not clap much unless the teacher tells us to do
so because everyone might get embarrassed. In one
Korean soap opera, I saw Koreans shouting and clapping while friends were performing just as if they were
watching entertainers. It is unimaginable in China. Especially, asking friends to “Sing! Sing!” or dance without
hesitation was really shocking.
Abril Korean students I met in Mexico made me surprised. In Mexico, female college students would not
wear skirts because they are uncomfortable and it is
difficult to have a seat. But Korean college students often wear skirts.
Sarah That is right. Korean girls often wear skirts or
short pants, but they don’t wear revealing blouses. In
Belgium, we commonly wear sleeveless clothes. After
coming to Korea, once I was wearing on a subway, and
older women whom I first met there raised my shoulder
strap when it went down or covered my upper revealing body part with something like cardigan. It was fun.
Hugh Such cultural differences seem OK because they
are just fun. But some sort of difference could be serious to Australians because it might cause traffic accidents. I mean, in Australia, we cross the road anytime as
long as there is a crosswalk sign. In Korea, however, you
have to check the signal first even if there is a crosswalk.
Many Australians cross the road without watching the
signal when they first came to Korea so there is a risk
of car accidents.
Rihani I made some mistakes because of the difference
between Koreans’ actual culture and what I have seen
in soap operas. I enjoyed Korean historical dramas for
a while, in which I saw subjects stepping backward before the king when going out. So I thought that people
would do that before the elderly and while working at
Koica, I stepped backward when leaving the boss’s office until my Korean companions let me know that it
was an old culture.
Korean soap operas are so popular that there
could be some fixed idea of Korea unless you actually come to Korea. How do people in your countries view Korea as?
Masharipova In most European countries, the awareness of Korea seems to be similar I think. Since Germany
used to be a divided state, many of them remember
Korea as a divided nation.

Sarah After watching Korean soap operas, I thought
that Korean guys would be all tall and handsome and
girls would be all pretty. But after coming to Korea, I
found that not everyone is. (smiling)
Qiantao Many think that Korea is exactly like we see in
Korean soap operas. For example, main characters often encounter traffic accidents in Korean soap operas.
So many Chinese think that they should be careful on
the street in Korea. Above all, Chinese think that Korea
is a heaven of shopping. Many wish to go to Korea for
shopping.
Rihani Algeria is far from Korea. So many just imagine Korea’s image in their minds while watching Korean
soap operas. In many scenes, a couple is dating alongside the river while riding a bike. So before coming to
Korea, I thought that Koreans would all ride a bike on
the street.
Ellen In Indonesia too, people love Korean popular cultures, especially K-pop. You can hear news about K-pop
everywhere. Before coming to Korea I told my relatives
that I would go to Korea, and they were excited as they
thought that I could easily meet Korean singers.
Diana In Colombia, you could hardly meet Korean immigrants and thus Korea is little known there compared
to in adjacent countries such as Argentina or Mexico.
Colombia is the only country that dispatched an army
for the Korean War among South American countries.
So elderly ones think that Korea is ‘a brotherly country.’ In the past, there was no specific image of Korea
and thus many thought that some Asian image shown
in movies of China and Japan would be the same with
Korean culture. But as interests in Korean culture are
growing among young ones, people are beginning to
distinguish cultures and attractions of each country in
Asia.
Rohit In India, Korea is known for electronic appliances.
People also think that Korea is a nation of industrious
and hardworking people.
Sarah Rohit’s words ring a bell. Some people in Belgium
who do not know of Korea might ask if mobile phones
are used in Korea. Korea is far from Belgium and people
there hardly hear about Korea except some news about
North Korea.
Korean Features That
Should be Known
Lastly, as you all like Korea and it’s culture, I am
wondering if you would like to let your friends or
families know of Korea, and if so, especially what
aspects of Korea you want them to know.
Ellen I would like to have my family eat ‘genuine’ Korean
food. Once, I made kimchi at KSI and brought it home
but no one could eat it. Maybe I introduced something
too strong first, Thereafter, I introduced some other
foods, and they all liked them. I want to bring them to
Korea and introduce other real Korean foods that Koreans actually enjoy.
Rohit I would like to let Indians know how kind Koreans
are. I feel like Koreans are always ready to help others. I
know one Korean guitar instructor that I met in India. He
always tried to help me in any situation. Every Korean I
have met are also just like him.
Sarah I would like to let people in Belgium know how
great Korean science technology is. Yesterday, I went to
Hangeul Museum, and there I saw amazing technologies. In Korea, you have wifi signals and mobile access
wherever you go, which is different from Belgium. The
most interesting thing is the subway. The screen door is
marvelous. Notifying the arrival with music is also cute.
Subway ads on a small screen are fun too.
Diana Every Korean that I personally know make thorough plans for work, study, and personal affairs, and
achieve them. I think such attitudes made Korea develop so fast. I would like to imitate such attitudes and
teach them to my students too.
Hugh I would like to let people know K-pop. Asians in
Western movies and soap operas were described just
as negative like gangs or fools. I think Psy’s <Gangnam
Style> partly became popular because of his funny image. People were not repulsed since it was close to the
image of Asians in Westerners’ mind, and this was one
of the factors that made him popular I think. Asians and
Asian cultures are cool and charming. Koreans appearing in K-pop music videos are the very subject of cultures and described as imposing and cool. As the young
generation grow while watching movies and music videos where Koreans and Asians are the main characters,
more multi-cultural attitudes will grow among them. I
believe that K-pop can play a key role in that regard.

Yantai China KSI
An institute established for teachers to be dispatched to
corporate classes opened through active promotion
Located in Yantai China Development Zone, ‘SL(Yantai)Auto Lighting Co., Ltd’ is
a Korean company that manufacturers automotive lamps. More than 20 Chinese
workers in the same uniforms are attending a Korean class at the plant after work.
As Korean Language Skills Develop,
Happy Bright Smiles Flow at Work
Very late at night after all the employees left work, an awkward pronunciation of Korean is heard among
idle machines in the plant. More than 20 people in the same jumpers follow along while the teacher
points numbers in Korean. These workers at a Korean company are closer to Korea than others thus
having a desire to know more about Korean language and culture. For them, KSI teachers extend their
hands out of the classroom. Through the Korean classes with teachers dispatched to companies, KSIs
at Yantai and Hangzhou China, Ouburn U.S. are growing with local Korean companies. The following is
some description of these classes out of a classroom.

Yantai is a city called ‘Another Korea’ in China,
as close as 50 minutes by flight from Incheon
and with more than 17,000 overseas Korean.
Including large companies such as Hyundai,
LG, Doosan, Daewoo, Posco, etc., more than
800 Korean companies have advanced into
Yantai. 40% of tax revenues here is from Korean companies.
Because of many Korean companies, there
are great demands for Korean education in
Yantai area. Many locals desire to work at a
Korean company because of the high income
and welfare benefits, and they feel the need
for Korean language skills for communication
with Korean managers.
From the development zone in Yantai where
most Korean companies are located to the
branch district where the local KSI is located,
it takes about 2 hours via public transportation. Thus, it is not easy for workers to come
to the institute after work, and Yantai KSI had
in mind teacher dispatch to companies right
from the step of opening. Understanding the
needs, Korean companies actively supported
this idea, submitting a statement at the time
of KSI designation in 2011.
Opened in March 2012, Yantai KSI has conducted Korean education programs by dispatching teachers to 6 companies including
‘Hyundai Motor Technology & Engineering
Center(China) Ltd.’, ‘Yantai Agabang Garment & Accessories Co., Ltd.’, ‘SL(Yantai)Auto
Lighting Co., Ltd’, ‘Yantai Dayang Electronics
Co., Ltd’, ‘Yantai Yusung Telecom Co., Ltd’,
‘Pantos Logistics(China) Co., Ltd.’ There were
various reasons to ask for teacher dispatch:
to enhance work efficiency by improving
workers’ Korean language skills; for workers to understand Korean culture; and to
enhance workers’ commitment to the company. Due to the limited number of available
teachers, the dispatch is applied to only some
companies while increasing requests are unbearable.
Active promotion has contributed to such
popularity of this institute. Twice or three
times a year, Yantai KSI sends KSI promotion
materials including introductory brochure,
application form for entrusted Korean educa-
tion, etc. to more than 260 member companies registered at Korean Commerce Union.
Upon receiving a request, a representative of
KSI visits the company and has a presentation. The curriculums are also introduced
based on the teaching material <Sejong Korean>.
In general, education managers at companies
request for Korean education. The institute
visits them, discuss on the class schedule,
class size, lecture room, equipment, teacher
commuting, etc., and shares the agreement.
“For classes conducted by a dispatched
teacher, only the lecture fees are charged regardless of the class size. Since Yantai is large
and public transportation is available only for
a limited time of the day, transportation for
teachers is provided by the company in principle.” (Lee Dongki, Yantai KSI Director)
Classes are basically in accord with KSI curriculums, and the contents may be adjusted
according to what each company aims at.
“The classes focus on frequently used expressions at work so that learners can practice them with Korean companions. I hum
joyfully through the nose when hearing Korean managers at work complaining, “They
keep asking me and practicing something all

The most outstanding change after the classes is not just Korean speaking skills but also
their attitudes toward other coworkers.
“It might be difficult to communicate with
others in Korean within a short period of
time, but as the Korean education session
progressed, association between Koreans
and Chinese workers became active. After
learning Korean cultures and customs, they
came to understand others better and the
corporate atmosphere became better too.”

By arranging branches of the KSI in the development zone, Yantai KSI is also planning
to open Korean classes for many small and
medium sized companies which are unable
to have separate classes due to the small
number of employees.

What are some distinctive features
of corporate classes through a
dispatched teacher?
At a clothing company, the lectures include
specific vocabularies of appearance, clothing, and color. Since the learners are employees, the honorific and phone etiquette
are also taught in detail.

Interests in Korea among employees have
increased since the Korean language class
was initiated. As employees try to speak in
Korean while talking with a resident even
in daily life, the atmosphere is far better
now. If you want to communicate with
employees well and to enhance their commitment to the company, I highly recommend you to try Korean language classes.

Hangzhou China KSI
Education from the institute
and support from the company - a mutually beneficial
relation of coexistence
Hangzhou is one of the places where the
opening and economic development started
earlier than others in China. Accordingly, the
residents are quite open-minded compared
to those in other areas of China. Having come
across Korea through Korean soap operas
and K-pop, interests in Korea are growing
among Hangzhou residents. Until November 2012 when Hangzhou KSI was founded,
Hangzhou residents had few chances to learn
and understand Korean language and culture.
As such, their expectation on the KSI is so
great, and in response, KSI, as a major Korean language education center of Hangzhou,
conducts various Korean cultural events to
make known Korean cultures in addition to
Korean language classes.
Classes through dispatched teachers of
Hangzhou KSI are unique in that they began
with a certain occasion where a company
dispatched a lecturer to one of its cultural
events of KSI. Hangzhou KSI then invited a
professional lecturer from LG Household &
Healthcare Ltd. Shanghai branch for a Korean
make-up demonstration at the institute to
make more meaningful the Hanbok experiencing event, which was the most popular
cultural program of the institute.
“Students responded so favorably that I
thought we could keep doing this Korean
make-up demonstration along with the Hanbok experiencing event every time. Since
support from companies was essential for
the event to continue, we thought of it seriously and decided to open lectures at companies through dispatched Korean teachers
for coexistence.” (Lee Jeongrim, Hangzhou

To dispatch teachers to companies, Institute
Director Lee Jeongrim visited the representative of a company and discussed specific
dispatch procedures and ways of conducting
classes with the education manager. After
classes were opened on, he often came by
the institute to check the progress of classes
and paid attention to the company’s request
for a higher level of satisfaction.
The most distinctive feature of the language
class of Hangzhou KSI through dispatched
teachers is that no fee is charged.
“I believe that the most direct and helpful way that KSI can contribute to the local
community is to conduct to Korean language
classes for the business entities. Since that
was the first-tried cooperative program, we
did not charge the fees for the program to be
established and spread widely. Instead, the
companies cooperate with us by providing
their items for our institute events.”
Hangzhou KSI continues to invite representatives from Korean companies in Hangzhou
to various events of the institute and discuss
with them ways to help each other. At present, Hangzhou KSI dispatches teachers to LG
Household & Healthcare Ltd. and LG Electronics.
As for LG Electronics, the employees are so
zealous that we conduct the advanced level
class in addition to the beginners’ class.
“It is challenging to continue Korean language
classes at a company. Employees have to
sacrifice their lunchtime for classes. When
the workload is heavy, they feel sorry to other companions. To motivate them, I make vocabulary cards with practical and frequently
used words, teach K-pop with a guitar, and
put forth a lot of efforts to arouse interests

Owing to such efforts, the level of satisfaction with Korean education programs among
the companies and employees is quite high.

After listening to a story of a learner who often missed
classes, a Korean teacher visits the company
In Alabama, U.S. where Ouburn KSI is located,
Korean automobile manufacturing companies including Hyundai Motors and Hyundai
Mobis, Mando, etc. are concentrated. As job
opportunities increased after the advancement of Korean companies into that area and
the number of Koreans and Korean restaurants increased, Ouburn residents are beginning to know Korea little by little.
As their positive view of Korea grows, those
who want to learn Korean are also gradually
increasing. As demands for Korean language
education programs increased especially
among locals working at a Korean company,
Ouburn University founded KSI in cooperation with Keimyung University in September
2013.
For a while after Ouburn KSI was opened, local employees of Korean companies visited it
to attend the classes. However, their absence
became quite frequent over time because it
was difficult to leave work due to the changing schedule.
“For learners who wish to attend classes but
are unable to, I thought that having classes
through dispatched teachers at the company
would be effective. First of all, I participated
in a gathering of various corporate heads and
managers in Ouburn and had a presentation

The teachers’ sincerity moved the corporate representatives. ‘Mando,’ an automobile
parts manufacturer, requested Korean classes through a dispatched teacher.
The working staff of Ouburn KSI met with
the company’s HR and education managers
for negotiation. The classes were customized for the employees. The class schedule
was adjusted according to the company’s
work schedule. The Korean language curricu-
lum was prepared by the KSI with frequently
used expressions at work presented through
various example sentences and vocabularies.
“As learners are companions working together every day, they talk about even small details and try to work together. When finding
new data or information about Korea, they
share it and actively participate in classes.”

Learners obtain more than language skills
from the Korean language class of Ouburn
KSI with a dispatched teacher. They come to
understand more about the company they
are working for and to communicate with
Korean companions more deeply. This is why
the dispatched teachers pay special attention
to teaching corporate cultures of Korea.
“I often tell learners to feel free to ask me
anything about Korean cultures that they
did not understand or wonder about during
classes. I kindly ask Korean employees too to
let me know if there is any problem with local
employees due to cultural difference. After
all, for American employees to understand
Korean corporate cultures and bridge the

lectures for a group of adjacent Korean companies.
“I expect that workers will have deeper understanding of Korean culture in association

each other through Korean language, I can
visualize a new future of Korean companies
growing with the world.

suggestions as follows:
First of all, paying attention to the actual
field condition.
The field conditions must be considered
above all things. For the foundation and KSIs
around the world to be smoothly and effectively operated, constant communication on
the local conditions is essential. No matter
how impressive plans might be proposed at
the office, if they are not realistic, the discussion is a mere empty talk. They may be
applicable to some but not to all of them.
Thus, policies and surveys should be implemented to specifically examine and address
challenges of each institute. Rather than a
uniform management, flexible and fieldcentered management practical to each local community is required.
More opportunities to invite outstanding
learners.
Every student learning the Korean language
at KSIs dream to visit Korea someday. At Da
Lat KSI as well, a number of students are
learning Korean language and culture. Most
of them are college students, office workers, and housewives (Korean-Vietnamese
family). Workers include employees at the
local government Diplomacy Bureau, Police
Bureau, Tourism Bureau, and four of them
are professors at University of Da Lat. Their
grades and zeal are both amazing. If they
visit Korea, the effect will be greater than
we can imagine. They will be leaders of the
country and global society in the future.
Their affection and commitment to Korea
will move them to seek connecting themselves and us as partners in global society!
When meeting and communicating in Korean, we will feel friendly to each other and
support Korean society cooperatively. Going
beyond merely longing for Korea, if they are
given an opportunity to visit Korea in person, that will be a significant turning point in
their lives. Until the end of their lives, they
will support, love, and embrace Korea.
Do you want to improve the brand value of
Korea? Then invest further into KSI!
KSI is a perfect means to enhance the
brand value of ‘Korean.’ Teaching and making known Korean language and culture, KSI
is everywhere around the world and plays
an important role. The boundary of KSI will
continue to be broadened. Making the Korean language and culture known is not an
instant trend. Rather, learning Korean language and culture for a long period of time
will help the world understand Korea, communicate with us, and sympathize us. Rekindling the Korean waves that seem halting
for a while recently is also possible through
none other than KSI. All local KSIs around
the globe, Institute Directors, and teachers
are to love local people and students, try
to understand them, and teach them Korean language and culture with pride of and
commitment to our mother country at heart

Korea is in an important phase at the moment
to come up with a new strategy to advance
into the future. In this 21st century of globalization, for Korea to continue a sustainable
development, strategic cooperative relationships with global companies and foreign governments need to be strengthened. Certainly,
local KSIs around the globe contribute a lot
to developing strategic human resources for
Korea to expand to the world in this era of
globalization.
For 2 years after the foundation of KSI in
Santiago, Chile, more than 150 Chileans have
come to it to learn Korean. This figure is as
great as the students at Confucius Institute

comparable to that of those desiring to learn

needs to advance.

worldwide and the foundation join in spreading Korean and promoting Korea around the
world. How far their interests, knowledge, and
love in Korea will reach depends on us. The
commission that KSIs around the world pursue will bring in a ripple effect on the future of
Korea. May all of us take further steps toward
the fundamental spirit of KSI in the year of
2015.

data. Initiated in 2012, Nuri-Sejong Hakdang makes available various materials including Korean language teaching materials for teachers, pictures, videos, online Korean
lectures for foreign students, etc. However, the data categories were so complicated that it needed time for first
visitors to Nuri-Sejong Hakdang to be familiar with the
Website.
The foundation conducted an onsite survey of KSIs and
a satisfaction survey in 2013, collecting opinions from
teachers and learners regarding problems of Nuri-Sejong
Hakdang and aspects to be corrected. Based on the results, the new Nuri-Sejong Hakdang was launched in 2014.
The most distinctive feature of this new Nuri-Sejong Hakdang is that it became easier and faster to find desired
data.The foundation newly categorized and simplified
items so that even first users of Nuri-Sejong Hakdang can
easily use the contents.
As the website of the KSIF(www.ksif.or.kr) of KSIF functions as a promotion space for the foundation, the new
Nuri-Sejong Hakdang is newly designed specifically for
teachers and learners only. Teachers and students may
have different goals to visit the new Nuri-Sejong Hakdang and different materials to refer to. Thus, the new
Nuri-Sejong Hakdang divided the contents to those for
learners and teachers. If you push the icons for ‘Learners’
and ‘Teachers’ to the left top, it will lead you to the corresponding separate space for each purpose.
The first list shown in the space for learners is the guide
for the Nuri-Sejong Hakdang. This guide provides explanations on specific contents under each category for foreign users of Nuri-Sejong Hakdang such as how to set
the language of the Nuri-Sejong Hakdang, how to join
the Website, how to use multi-language contents, etc.
In the Learners’ space, contents were divided to Korean
lectures, learning materials, daily speaking contents, grammar/pronunciation/vocabulary contents, and Korean culture contents. As for the contents of ‘Korean culture,’ the
sub-categories are tradition, popular culture, travel, etc. So
that learners can easily find interesting contents. Additionally, the space for learners makes available worldwide KSI
news and Korean language proficiency test information.
The space for teachers classifies the contents depending
on the objectives rather than themes. The ‘Korean teacher
training’ section presents ways to become a Korean language teacher and self-training programs for KSI teachers.
The ‘Korean language education materials’ section provides 52 e-books related to Korean language education
including the KSI Standard Textbook <Sejong Korean>,
<Sejong Korean 1~4 Workbook Guide>, etc. In addition,
10 guidebooks for Korean teachers to prepare classes are
also available. Class contents such as picture, video, game,
etc. are available in the ‘Class Supplementary Contents’
section. If you push the icon ‘Class Supplementary Contents,’ it leads you to the ‘Digital Education Contents Section’ where you can browse sub-sections including ways
of utilization, contents types, <Sejong Korean> units, etc.
The ‘Sharing Section’ presents exemplary teaching plans,
winners of teaching plan contests. The ‘Notice Section’
provides notices of academic associations and teacher
recruitments.
The foundation started series articles of Web-toon ‘Korean traditional fairy tales’ and Korean speaking contents
‘Poppaping Korean – Speaking’ in line with the new NuriSejong Hakdang. This year too, the foundation is planning
to continue developing various and interesting education
materials in cooperation with contents developing agencies and promoting the distribution of Korean language
and culture through the Nuri-Sejong Hakdang.

Many learn a foreign language while watching Disney cartoons or Japanese animations. Cartoons are a good medium that everyone, from young to old, Whether it be
Western or Eastern cultures can become familier with. The foundation has developed
cartoon-type learning materials so that foreigners can easily approach Korean cultures
and that their interests in Korean language and culture can grow in the mean time.
Who can use Web-toon in learning?
Some explanation to cartoons is added below each cartoon so that foreigners can
easily understand some Korean idioms. Translations in English, Chinese, Japanese, and
Spanish are also provided so that those who do not know Korean too can learn Korean
cultures through the Web-toon contents. Korean language teachers can introduce

A World Heritage with
the Breathing of History & Culture
Namhansanseong
This space bears long history, culture, and a number of life traces. Namhansanseong was
newly registered to UNESCO in 2014. Hundreds of years ago, this place was a fortress that
protected a nation and many lives in danger. Now it is reborn as a space that reflects the
history and old stories. Namhansanseong, a place where history, culture, and life coexist, is
reviewed in different perspectives.

A Stronghold That Protected Korean People
About 360 years ago, in 1653 Dutch Hamel was on his
way to Japan but managed to drift ashore on Jeju Island
with 36 companions because of a typhoon. For about 13
years from then on, he kept records of his experiences
in Joseon and released a book, known as <The Journal
of Hendrick Hamel> that made known closed Joseon to
Westerners for the first time. At the time of Ching’s delegates’ visit, Hamel and his companions who had been
in Hanyang back then were transferred to ‘Namhansanseong,’ about 45km from the city to avoid unnecessary
misunderstanding. According to <The Journal of Hendrick Hamel>, “Namhansanseong is a stronghold on top
of a high mountain. For the king to evacuate here, food
enough for three years was kept and the space could
accommodate thousands of people.”
Namhansanseong Is a Strong Fortification
That the Heavens Built Up
As for Mt. Cheongryang, where Namhansanseong is located, the western part which is on the same side as
Seoul is high while the eastern part is low. In particular,
the outside of its western part leading from Seoul to
Namhansanseong is so steep that it is difficult to climb
up. According to <Bukhakui(北學議)> of Park Jega, a
practical science in the later years of Joseon, the steepness of the road leading from the outside of the west
gate is comparable to that of Macheonryeong(摩天嶺)
or Cheongseokryeong(靑石嶺) well known for the steep
mountain valley near Yodong leading to China. Looking from an observatory constructed at the outside
of the west gate, you may easily guess how difficult
it must have been when King Injo had to come over
Namhansanseong whose outer rings were covered with
snow throughout the winter even if there was no castle
walls.
Thus, our ancestor called Namhansanseong ‘Cheonjakjiseong(天作之城),’ which means ‘a natural fortress
that the heavens built up.’ Dasan Jeong Yakyong, a
Way to the outside of Seomun(West Gate)
leading practical scientist in the later years of Joseon,
stated that the position of that castle contributed to
protecting people’s lives in his <Minboui(民堡議)>, a
book about national defense.
He classified the types of layouts for domestic fortresses depending on the type of mountain summits to
the following four: First, Gorobong (栲栳峯) type whose
edges at four sides are high with the center sinking like a
basin; second, Sanbong (蒜峯) type whose summit is flat
and edges at four sides are separated; third, Samobong
(紗帽峯) which has two different summits, and between
them, a wall is constructed to accommodate people;
lastly, Maanbong (馬鞍峯) which is similar to Samobong
but the two summits are same in size and look like a
saddle. Among these, Jeong Yangyong viewed the first
one, Gorobong, as the best position for people to protect their own lives, and stated ‘Namhansanseong’ as a
good example.
Castle Construction Skills of Korean People
Recognized As a World Heritage
Namhansanseong consists of the 9km-long main fortress(本城) built up in the times of Silla and the 3kmlong external fortress(外城) added during Byeongjahoran. In 672 (12th year of King Munmu), in the times of
Silla, the construction of Namhansanseong was initiated,
and then 1,000 years later, in the year of 1626 in Joseon Dynasty(4th year of King Injo), the construction
was resumed. Of course, the castle continued to function between the periods, and some repairing projects
were conducted in early years of Joseon, but the current Namhansanseong was built up by this time.
While Suwon Hwaseong was the fruit of fortress construction technology based on all available data back
then, Namhansanseong reflects the history of castle
construction before that fruit was bore. By the time of a
large-scale construction project in 1624, the existing site
of an ancient castle built in the times of Silla according
to one historical record. If you look around the outside

The largest and magnificent South Gate
Namhansanseong Haenggung where the leadership supervised
Haenggung system in the time of Joseon
of the fortress, there are many stones built
up during the Silla era that look like corn
grains or protective walls (雉城) to prevent
enemies from coming up the ramparts.
Besides, defensive techniques advanced
over time as enemies’ arms continued developing. For instance, the fortress was built
up against volleys mainly used after Imjinweran, a Japanese Invasion of Korea in 1592,
but later the external walls and southern
fortification were built up to defend itself
from Ching’s new weapon called ‘Hongipo’
at the time of Byeongjahoran. The stones
for those walls were bigger and more sound.
The Heart of Namhansanseong –
Haenggung, a temporary palace,
and Mountain Fortress
Currently, 580 people dwell in Namhansanseong, but about 100 years ago, more than
4,000 were living in this imposing mountain
fortress.
After the fortress construction project was
completed in 1626, Eupchi in Chungungdong was moved into the castle and efforts
were put forth to maintain the fortress and
form a town inside by exempting compulsory labor.
Owing to this policy of collecting residents,
the scale of 300 households was enlarged
to 1,076 with 4,108 members in total by the
middle 18th century, about 100 years later,
according to the record of 『Yeojidoseo (輿
地圖書)』 that describes the fortress’ status
back then. Namhansanseong and the town
in it were a strategically formed and planned
for national security.
In the center, there was a Haenggung for administration. This Namhansanseong Haenggung was originally planned to protect the
king from internal or external enemies, and
thus the king’s bedroom was surrounded by
multilayered walls.
The basic layout of Namhansanseong
Haenggung at the time of foundation in 1626
is in the drawing of Namhansanseong made
in the late 17th century: It included Wejo(
外朝) where subjects stayed, Chijo(治朝)
where the king would have official events,
and Yeonjo(燕朝) where the king stayed and
lived. The general scale was smaller than a
common palace, but the three-jo (三朝) plan
of a royal palace was applied as it was.
In the time of King Sukjong, Jwajeon and
Ushil were built up in the left and right sides
of Haenggung respectively to keep mortuary tablets of the royal ancestors’ shrine and
state.
Since the royal ancestors’ shrine and state
were significant in terms of national traditionality, this indicates that Namhansanseong was recognized as a semi-capital city
(副首都) that could work on behalf of the
capital in emergency situations.
In the time of King Jeongjo, Yusu(留守) that
ruled over Eupchi and Su-eosa(守御使), a
military organization, became firmly established, and in the time of King Sunjo, more
governmental offices such as Jwaseungdang and Iljanggak were further constructed to the left of Haenggung, which enlarged
the general plan of Haenggung.
Namhansanseong – the Foundation
for the Korean People
In the innermost part of Namhansanseong
Haenggung was Naehaengjeon, a bedroom
of the king.
Right behind Naehaengjeon, there is a zelkova tree that bears the old story of a magpie that gave hope to the king, and right
beside it, there is a rock. This is quite big,
but you may not notice it when passing by
because of the antique, impressive sentiment of Haenggung.
If you look closely at this rock, you can see
carved letters right beside the rock - Banseok(磐石) – which was made one predecessor in the time of Joseon.
Since the rick was located in an area where
the security was quite strict and the entrance was thoroughly controlled, it is
thought that this was made by the highest
class nobles.
The letters mean a broad and flat rock, not
merely a rock whose upper part is flat just
like a common tray.
Looking at Naehaengjeon to the east, you
may wonder why the letters of ‘Banseok’
headed North, not East so that it could be
well shown.
This is probably related to its function
as an important strategic place of Namhansanseong that had to play a key role
in reviving the country and nation. Indeed,
Namhansanseong was a foundation for the
Korean people.

When Heard, It Sounds the Same
But When Written, It is Different
‘Jorida’ and ‘Jolida’
‘Jorida’ means to boil the soup a lot so that the flavor would be absorbed into the ingredients
fully. This is a way of cooking that one intentionally selected. However, ‘jol-ida,’ the causative
verb of ‘jolda,’ means that it was not meant to be but the food was boiled too much mistakenly. Thus, some dishes where potato, hairtail, and pork should be boiled a lot are to be called
‘potato jorim,’ ‘hairtail jorim,’ and ‘pork jangjorim’ respectively. But when you fell asleep while
cooking and kimchijjigae was boiled too much, then you would say, ‘What should I do? The
jjigae(pot stew) was boiled too much while I was sleeping.’
‘Bandeusi’ and
‘Bandeus-i’
‘Iddaga’ and
‘idd-aga’
‘Bandeusi’ and ‘bandeus-i’, ‘iddaga’ and ‘idd-aga’ are all correct words but have different
meanings. ‘Bandeusi’ is an adverb meaning ‘surely,’ while ‘bandeus-i’ is an adverb meaning to
be straight without being bended or properly. ‘Iddaga’ is an adverbe meaning ‘later’ or ‘some
time later,’ while ‘idd-aga’ is a combination of the stem, ‘idd’ and the connecting ending ‘daga,’
whose meaning is similar to ‘meomureudaga(after staying for a while). In other words, ‘iddaga’
indicates the time while ‘idd-aga’ indicates the space.
While searching through the Internet, I found the words, “galchijol-im” and “jangjol-im.”
In these cases, the correct spelling is not ‘jol-im’ but ‘jorim.’ In fact, ‘jol-im’ or ‘jol-ida’
has a different meaning. In Korean, there are many words that sound like the same
but the spelling and meaning are different just like ‘jol-im’ but ‘jorim.’ They are called
‘Dong-eum-i-cheo-l-i-ui-eo,’ which means that the sound is the same but the way
of writing and meaning are different. Today, let us some very confusing examples of
‘Dong-eum-i-cheo-l-i-ui-eo.’

In the case of ‘no-reum’ and ‘nol-eum,’ ‘no-reum’ means gambling while ‘nol-eum’ means
playing. ‘He dissipated his riches because of gambling(noreum),’ and ‘putting legs in the valley
water, I feel like I am a hermit playing(nol-eum)’ are correct . As for ‘buchida’ and ‘buch-ida,’
‘buchida’ means ‘to fall short, send, and fry with oil.’ ‘Buch-ida’ means to have it stick to each
other. For example, you may say, ‘I gave it up because it was beyond my power,’ ‘Please put
a stamp on this letter and send(buch-ida) it for me,’ and ‘Why are you making(buch-ida) innocent people fight?’ In addition, ‘(Dariga) jeorida’ and ‘(baechureul) jeol-ida’, ‘(il-eul) machida’
and ‘(jeongdabeul) mach-ida’, and ‘(bajireul) darida’ and ‘(hanyageul) dal-ida’ are also some
examples of ‘Dong-eum-i-cheo-l-i-ui-eo.’
