James Oliver Curwood
(File Photo)
Welcome to the 39th annual Curwood Festival. This four day celebration is held
in honor of Owosso’s own James Oliver Curwood. He was an avid conservationist, and
author, who became one of the wealthiest writers in his time. Along with his wonderful
stories, he left the city and its residents, a beautiful castle that he built on the riverbank to
use as his writing studio. Please take the time to visit the castle, and check out “Oliver”…
he would love to see you!
Together We Make a Difference is this year’s theme! The theme was chosen to reflect the
many volunteers, organizations and businesses that work together to produce the largest festival
in Shiawassee County while raising monies that help the citizens of our community.
There is much to discover, not only in the festival area, but all around Curwood Country
as well. Visit the Steam Railroading Institute, home of the Pere Marquette 1225 Steam
Locomotive and the Shiawassee Arts Center; bike on the Rails to Trails from Owosso to
Ionia; walk or run the river walkway from Owosso to Corunna;
shop the many downtown area businesses and so much more.
There is so much to discover in the Owosso area!
The many festival volunteers invite you to experience a weekend
full of food, music, entertainment and family events. The Board
of Directors, the Committee Volunteers, and the City of Owosso
Administration, hope that you feel a warm welcome to the festival and
the city of Owosso. Thank you for joining us in Curwood Country!

2016 Curwood Festival Heritage Parade
Grand Marshal
Representatives of the Curwood Festival Board of Directors made a surprise visit to the weekly Owosso Rotary Club

Parade Grand Marshal.
David has been active in the Owosso community for over 65
years in several local industries including Universal Electric,
Woodard and Vaungarde, a company that he co-owned with
his wife Patricia. David also co-owned Flight 1 and Owosso Motor Car Company. His involvement in the community
went far beyond his contributions to his manufacturing interests. David has been active in our community including
being a Boy Scout leader, YMCA Wiseman, member and Past
President of the Owosso Rotary Club, Board of Directors of
Shiawassee Community Mental Health, Memorial Healthcare
Support Board, Shiawassee Regional Chamber of Commerce

David was named Citizen of the Year, and was recently a Dancing with the Starz Contestant and ran for Mr. Owosso in 2014.
We are proud to have David honor us by accepting to serve as our
2016 Heritage Parade Grand Marshal. The Grand Marshal can be
seen in the Heritage Parade on Saturday, June 4.

The Curwood Festival is proud to announce the winners of
the 2016 Curwood Saga Writing Contest. This year’s Grand

Merchant Window
Decorating Contest
As you’re strolling the downtown streets of Owosso
be sure to check out the window displays of the local businesses that participated in the annual Curwood
Window Decorating Display. Businesses used this
year’s Curwood Festival Heritage Parade theme, “Together We Make a Difference,” as inspiration to create
their window displays incorporating the red and white
Curwood colors along with memorabilia from festivals
past and present. The winner of the “Best Curwood
Display” will win bragging rights for a year and a traveling trophy to display in their store front window.
Children’s Events
Come join us for an afternoon of fun! The Curwood
Festival children’s events are Sunday, June 5, from 12 p.m.

There will be games, crafts, and other fun activities
for families to participate in together. Children age 14
and under are able to win prizes, have their face painted, and so much more. The best part is … it’s FREE!
This year, we will have guests from the Ann Arbor
Hands on Museum, we will have a new Monster Mural, and you will be able to participate in Zumba for
Kids, presented by Becky Dillon from STRETCH. A
special thank you to our generous sponsors: Big John
Steak & Onion, CLH Insurance, Slingerland Chrysler
Dodge Jeep Ram, and Team One Credit Union.

Curwood Cat Contest
It’s Sunday, June 5, and my cat, Muey Tai was strutting around in front
of the mirror in the bathroom. When I asked what he was doing, he meowed that he was going to the Curwood Cat Contest where he was sure
to take First Place! He continued to fuss, meowing that he had to be at the
Woodard Paymaster Building at 10:30 a.m. to register. And, to top it off,
Muey Tai is challenging all of his feline friends to do the same! So cats,
tell your owners, if you’re unique, healthy, and have a great personality,
get them to bring you down to compete with your other feline friends and
have a fantastic feline day in Owosso! This event is sponsored in part
by Pet Supplies Plus and Curwood Festival. On-site registration begins at
10:30 a.m. with judging at 11:30 a.m. Registration fee is $8. Muey Tai
hopes to see you all there!

Kids in Curwood Country Parade
The Kids in Curwood Country parade has been a favorite
Curwood event for many years. The parade was originally
developed to give our elementary school age children
a chance to march but not miss the parade on Saturday.
Currently the parade generally consists of approximately
2,500 children each year. The parade is a great opportunity
for our kids to strut their stuff in a parade that is all their own.
The theme of the 2016 parade is “Super Heroes on Parade.”
The parade line up begins at 6:30 p.m. at the corner of
Dewey and King Streets. At 7:30 p.m., the parade heads
west on Oliver St. to Park St. Then South on Park St.
to Exchange, west on Exchange to Ball St. The parade
will turn north on Ball St. and conclude at the corner of
Ball and Williams Streets. The parade will disperse in the
parking lot of the First Congregational Church.
The Kids parade is judged each year and cash prizes
are awarded. This year, prizes will now be given for Most
Creative, first place walking and first place float and
second place for each as well. Special plaques are also
given to those groups who have shown dedication to the
parade by their continued participation.
The parade is possible only through support by our
sponsors, VG’s Food Center, proud sponsor of the Kids
Parade for the last 27 years, and The Edward Jones
Investment office of Dave Minarik.
The Kids parade is a genuine joy to assemble and to work
with the enthusiastic children and their dedicated parents.
It is apparent by the growing number of spectators that
the Kids Parade is a crowd-pleasing event that continues
to thrill the kid in all of us. Please join us this year along
Owosso’s historic tree-lined streets for some fun, smiles
and family entertainment.

Amphitheater Stage Entertainment
Saturday, June 4, 5 p.m. – 8 p.m.
Classic Rock & Roll performed by the most talented
young musicians in Lapeer County and beyond. YMC
is a local non-profit organization that helps kids learn
to perform in a band and develop their artistic skills for
FREE. “We brought together one rocker from the seventies, a group of local high school students, some instruments and equipment and the 3rd Degree Burns Band was
born,” said founder, director & manager, Gary Burns.
Today, 3rd Degree Burns is not only about learning to
play great rock and roll, it is a model for young adults to
learn acceptance and leadership. Acceptance, through
God’s gift of music, to break down every social barrier including race, gender, age, handicap, and income.
Leadership to stand up against those social barriers and
to accept each other for the great qualities that each of
them possess. Learning music...Acceptance...Leadership...Dedication...Hard Work...Paying it Forward. 3rd
Degree Burns puts that all together and then cranks up the
amps to put on a Rockin’ show. Come out and see us!
The Amphitheater Stage is sponsored in part by
Capitol Bowl/Hot Spot, Healthfirst Pharmacy,
Jumbo’s Burger Bar, Oliver Woods Retirement Village,
Owosso Graphic Arts and Sagelink Credit Union
and Curwood Festival.

Friday, June 3, 7 p.m. – 1 a.m.
Not since Garth Brooks jumped off the stage and into
people’s hearts has the country scene delivered such riveting entertainment as southeastern Michigan’s Alan Turner
and his Steel Horse Band. His connection with his fans
makes him stand out, and his rugged good looks and rich
baritone vocals often have him touted as “Tim McGraw
with a Toby Keith attitude.” Alan found his love of music
at a very young age. By six years old, Alan’s mother, a
Sunday school teacher, was teaching him to read music and
play piano. Alan’s father, also a singer/songwriter, was a
constant inspiration until his death when Alan was just ten
years old. “Shortly before his death, my father had given
me Kenny Rogers’ album, The Gambler,” Alan explains. “I

think it was the combination of my father’s musical influence and that old vinyl record of Kenny’s that led to my
love of country music.” This love is visible in Alan’s music
in the way he delivers each song on stage. That love came
full circle in Las Vegas, Nevada in 2010 when Alan and the
band had the honor of meeting Kenny Rogers and being
his direct opening act. All across the USA and into Canada,
Alan and the band have been thrilling crowds with distinctly high energy country with a pumping rock and roll sound
that no one delivers better. From Alan jumping off the stage
to sing and dance with the fans, to the driving beat of a very
confident and talented group of musicians, you definitely
don’t want to miss a show. The Steel Horse Band consists
of: lead guitarist Todd Foster, Randy Lopez on the bass
guitar, Freddie August on keyboards & saxophone, drummer Mark Lewis, and adding her angelic voice to the Steel
Horse sound is Heather Nichole as backup vocalist. They
truly have made their mark as a band to be reckoned with.
With a nonstop performance schedule of over 134 performances a year there is no sign of slowing down. This is
one cowboy you don’t want to miss! - See more at: www.

Flapjack
Brunch
Now in its 93rd year, the Owosso Rotary
Club is the oldest service club in Greater
Shiawassee County. On Saturday, June 4,
from 8 a.m. – Noon, the Owosso Middle
School cafeteria will see club members
serving up all the pancakes you can eat
along with 3 sausage links, butter, syrup,
juice, milk and coffee during their annual FLAPJACK BRUNCH. Cost of the
brunch is $6 per adult and $3 for children under 13. Proceeds from the event
are earmarked for the organization’s service club projects, including a partnership with the Shiawassee Family YMCA
to assist with maintaining their soccer
fields. The club also maintains the pavilion they built at Harmon Partridge Park
where they also planted 100 trees.

Shiawassee Arts Center Offering A Free Showing Of The Movie
“The Bear” Based On James Oliver Curwood’s Book
“The Grizzly King”
On Saturday, 10 a.m. - 6 p.m. and Sunday, 11 a.m - 4 p.m, the 1989 movie, “The Bear,”
which was based on Curwood’s 1916 book “The Grizzly King,” will be showing all day
inside the Arts Center’s River Gallery. Set in late 19th-century British Columbia, Canada,
the film tells the story of an orphaned bear cub who befriends an adult male grizzly as hunters pursue them through the wild. The movie was filmed almost entirely in the Italian and
Austrian areas of the Dolomites with live animals, including Bart the Bear, a trained 9-foot
Kodiak, present on location. Notable for its almost complete lack of dialogue and its minimal score, the film was nominated for and won numerous international film awards. There is
no charge to view the movie. Popcorn and lemonade will be offered for a small donation.
The Shiawassee Arts Center, which is located near
Curwood Castle, is open year-round Tuesday through
Sunday, 1 - 5 p.m. The Arts Center features the artwork of local and statewide artists in nine galleries including the Frieseke Gallery and a specialty
Gift Shop. The public is welcome and there is no admission charge. SAC,
which is celebrating its 44th anniversary in 2016, is a non-profit organization whose mission is to encourage participation and appreciation of the
arts. For more information call the Arts Center at 989-723-8354 or visit

home town they all hold so dear, Ashleigh’s Dance Shack
will be performing throughout Curwood weekend. Keep
an eye out at the conclusion of Opening Ceremony and
the beginning of Wine and Cheese Party. Ashleigh’s Dance
Shack specializes in Competition & Recreational Dance
Classes, Adult & College Dance & Fitness Classes, Wedding Choreography, Gymnastics, Cheerleading & Dance
Clinics, Majorette training and ZUMBA. Call 989-720LEAP(5327) for more information!
Co-Chairs Devin and Trevor Nelson invite you to
bring your blanket and a picnic lunch and find your
favorite spot along the Shiawassee River to watch
and cheer on your favorite kayakers, canoeist and rafters as they make their way from McCurdy Park in
Corunna to the walk bridge in Owosso.
As always, the River Daze event which begins at
McCurdy Park in Corunna beginning at 11:30 a.m. on
Sunday, June 5, will bring back memories of “back in
the day” when River Daze was merely a flatbed truck
filled with Junior High students that would spend the
day cleaning the river to now being a big part of Curwood Festival.
Thank you to our
sponsor Auto Crafters. If you haven’t
signed up, you still
have time to participate. Onsite registration will take place the
day of the event from
11 a.m.-11:30 p.m.

Of James Oliver Curwood
(Independent File Photo)
This year the Owosso Historical Commission is expanding its exhibit of
photographs of author, conservationist, and early movie pioneer James Oliver
Curwood. The display will include photos that haven’t been seen in Owosso
since Curwood’s death in 1927.
Curwood Castle will be open to the public on Thursday, June 2 from 1 - 7 p.m.,
Friday, June 3 from 1 - 6 p.m., Saturday, June 4 from 11 - 7 p.m., and
Sunday, June 5 from 11 - 5 p.m. A donation of $1 per person is suggested.
For more information about Curwood Castle, The Owosso Historical Commission, or the Curwood Collection please call at 989-725-0597 or look us up at
www.owossohistory.org.
Take a trip back in time with re-enactors from the French Fur Traders through the Civil War.
They are excited to demonstrate the way of living in the 1700s to the 1800s and answer your
questions about the times. The encampment will be located along the river, near Curwood Castle. Get ready to smell cooking over the open fires, watch the blacksmith’s hammer pounding
out hot metal, surveyors laying out the land marks, a Colonial Doctor, the many tent lodges and
tee pee setups, with participants living under the stars, also gun and much more. The re-enactors
are looking forward to seeing the many visitors at the Curwood Festival. Camps are open Saturday, June 4, from 9 a.m. - 6 p.m. and Sunday, June 5, from 9 a.m. - 4 p.m. Come join the fun!
