TAKE TIME
Nelson Mandela said: “We must
use time wisely and forever realize
that the time is always ripe to do
right.” This summer, let us all hit
the pause button to take time for
ourselves.
During these leisurely months, the
Pratt Library plays an important
role as a resource and community center. Summer is the
perfect time to read fun books that interest your child.
Librarians are ready to recommend books and ways to
enjoy reading them: grab a blanket and lie in the park or
read under the stars with your children during a camping
trip. Reading is fun, but students should never take a
vacation from learning.
The Pratt also offers a variety of free programs
throughout the summer. Magic, music and storytelling
programs for kids and their families are offered at all
Pratt branches. New exhibits at the Central Library
include Maryland in Black and White and Making a
Difference. You’ll also find many free movies, concerts
and author events to enjoy. It’s a good time to slow down
and create memorable experiences with your family.
As the saying goes, “take time to smell the flowers.” No
one has ever regretted doing it, especially with a good
book in hand.

Italian director Michelangelo Antonioni’s
first English-language production is
widely considered one of the seminal
films of the 1960s. Thomas (David
Hemmings), a wealthy fashion
photographer in “Swinging London,”
lives a meaningless life of casual sex and drug use. His life
changes when he thinks that he has witnessed a murder
while taking photographs in the park. As he develops
and blows up the photos, he becomes involved with Jane
(Vanessa Redgrave), the woman in the photographs.
Directed by Michelangelo Antonioni, Great Britain, 1966,

A tough-talking teen attempts to

hard-boiled high school noir, told in the
style of a Dashiell Hammett mystery.

the elaborate ranks of the high school social scene and its
more insidious underbelly when the body of his former
girlfriend Emily is found lying lifeless in a remote creek.

Walk in Their Shoes:
Can One Person Change the World?
Tuesday, July 8, 6:30 p.m., Central Library, Poe Room
Twenty-one years ago, Jim Ziolkowski gave up a fast-track
career in corporate finance to dedicate his life to buildOn,
an organization that turns inner-city teens into community
leaders at home and abroad. Walk in Their Shoes tells the story
of Jim’s movement and the thousands of young people who have decided to step
forward and make a difference. The students of buildOn have contributed more
than 1.2 million hours of service, from Detroit and the South Bronx to Haiti,
Mali, and Nepal, while building more than 550 schools worldwide.

The Last American Diplomat:
John D. Negroponte and the
Changing Face of US Diplomacy
Wednesday, July 9, 2014, 6:30 p.m.
Central Library, Poe Room
John D. Negroponte’s career, spanning 50 years of
unprecedented American global power, includes his service
as U.S. ambassador to Honduras, Mexico, the Philippines and Iraq. Though
considered the ultimate insider, he opposed Kissinger in Vietnam and warned
that the Iraq War could be another “Vietnam.” George W. Liebmann, lawyer
and historian specializing in American and international diplomatic history,
delivers this incisive account of Negroponte’s life and career, based on personal
and shared experience.

Ulysse
Yanique
In Drifting, her debut collection of interlinking stories, Katia
Ulysse follows the private lives of four secretive Haitian
families whose hopes for distant success are constantly
challenged by the hard realities of the immigrant journey.
Ulysse, a native of Haiti, lives in Baltimore. Her stories have
appeared in Haiti Noir, Brassage, and other anthologies.
Tiphanie Yanique’s debut novel, Land of Love and Dying,
chronicles three generations of the Bradshaw family in the
Virgin Islands: stories of magic and lust, unknown connections and hidden
mysteries, family legacies, an island world undergoing historical changes.
Yanique is the author of the story collection How to Escape from a Leper Colony
and a 2010 Rona Jaffe Writers’ Award winner.
Kevin Shird
Lessons of Redemption
Wednesday, July 23, 6:30 p.m., Central Library, Poe Room
In Lessons of Redemption, Kevin Shird, co-founder and
president of the Mario Do Right Foundation, tells his life
story, from the tough streets of Baltimore City, through
several years in federal prison, to rebirth as a community
leader championing substance abuse prevention and helping
children of addicted parents. “I want people to know that you don’t have to
be defined by your mistakes,” says Shird. “You can turn your life around and
become a positive member in society. I did.”

Sacrifices of Joy
In this third book of the Sienna St. James series (Without
Faith and Losing Hope), Sienna believes she has come face
to face with the terrorist responsible for the carnage in her
hometown. Taking him on as a client in her therapy practice
may be the only way to prove to herself and the authorities
that her time-tested instincts are right. In 2012, Leslie Sherrod received the
SORMAG Readers Choice Award for Christian Author of the Year.

Collaborative Strategies
for Sustainable Cities:
Economy, Environment and
Community in Baltimore
Tuesday, July 15, 6:30 p.m., Central Library, Poe Room
Baltimore, like many other cities, is redesigning local
government policy and programs to become a more
sustainable city. Sustainability encourages city officials to consider the economic,
environmental, and social needs of the community and requires collaboration
between city government and neighborhood and community organizations,
funders, and state and federal agencies. Eric Zeemering is assistant professor in
the Department of Public Policy at UMBC. Presented in partnership with 1000
Friends of Maryland and Baltimore GreenWorks.

The Road to Goshen Shoals
Set in rural North Carolina in 1970, The Road to Goshen
Shoals tells the story of Arlis Morrow, a white newspaper
reporter, who returns to his small, isolated hometown to look
for a black man he had known 30 years earlier as a playmate.
At his dying mother’s request, Arlis begins seeking clues to
the man’s whereabouts, encountering subtle resistance from both black and
white townspeople. Paul Valentine, a Baltimore resident, is a retired Washington
Post reporter and the author of two previous novels, Crisscross and Dark Epiphany.
Jess Row
Your Face in Mine
Wednesday, August 20, 6:30 p.m.
Central Library, Poe Room
Not long after moving back to his hometown of Baltimore,
Kelly Thorndike meets an old friend from high school who
has had “racial reassignment surgery.” Once a skinny, white Jewish kid, Martin
has altered his hair, skin and physiognomy to allow him to pass as African
American. He wants Kelly to help him sell racial reassignment surgery to the
world; Kelly agrees and soon things begin to spiral out of control. Jess Row is
the author of the story collections The Train to Lo Wu and Nobody Ever Gets Lost.
His stories have been anthologized three times in The Best American Short Stories
and have won two Pushcart Prizes and a PEN/O.Henry Award.

summer slide.
OFFERED IN ALL BRANCHES, the Pratt Library’s
summer programs help reduce “summer
slide.” This loss of academic skills that children
may experience in July and August is nearly
impossible to make up, compounds over time,
and particularly impacts children in underserved
communities.
IT COSTS $60 TO SPONSOR A CHILD for a whole
summer’s worth of library programs. Won’t you
consider sponsoring a child or teen?
