O
nce you hear her voice you’ll never
forget it. That happened to me in
1984 when I got struck hearing a new
sound over the speaker-system. I worked
my way to the DJ booth. “What’s the name
of the album?” I yelled over the music.
“Whose Side Are You On by Matt Bianco!”
He yelled back. The next day I bought it
and loved every song. I kept the old vinyl
album as token of a memorable event in
my life.
With her three-octave range as well as
her Latin-flavored jazz-influenced stylings
and multi-layered harmonies, Basia established herself a successful international recording career during the late 1980s and
early 1990s. In 1985, Basia and Danny
White left Matt Bianco to launch her solo
career. In 1987 her first album Time and
Tide was released selling almost two million copies. As a solo artist Basia achieved
greatest success in the United States where
she sold over one million of her debut album.
In 1989 her second album London
Warsaw New York repeated that success.
Her third studio album, The Sweetest Illusion, was released in 1994 and was a
moderate success in the U.S. market selling over half-million copies, but globally
it became another million-seller. Despite a
successful international career and faithful
fan base she withdrew from the recording
industry in 1998, after the release of her
collection of greatest hits
After a break from recording, she is
emerging with her strongest work yet, It’s
That Girl Again, an album that brings her
trademark global pop/jazz sound into today. From the first track “If Not Now Then
When,” the bouncing melody, soaring
horns, and the feeling that you’ve landed
in a small fiesta, it’s as though she has
never been away. Basia and her collaborator Danny White have always drawn from
timeless influences: the rhythms and styles
of Latin music, the sound of classic American soul and R&B, and the polish of ’50s
and ’60s jazz.

Psychedelic Furs
T
he Furs have been regarded as
a musical icon that bridged the
gap between early punk and the alternative hard rock and grunge that
would rise during the 90s. They
only have two shows in Florida,
one right here in Brevard.
The Psychedelic Furs are an English rock band founded in 1977. Led by
singer Richard Butler and his brother
Tim Butler on bass guitar, the Psychedelic Furs were one of the more successful acts spawned from the British
punk rock scene. Their music went
through several phases, from an initially austere art rock sound, later touching on new wave and hard rock.
The Furs debut, a self-titled album
from 1980, quickly established the band
on radio in Europe and was a top 20 hit
in the UK. The album also found success in Germany, Italy, France, Spain
and Australia. The US version of the
album was resequenced, but failed to
have as strong a commercial impact.
The Furs did find success in the
U.S. with their next release, 1981’s
Talk Talk Talk, which saw the band
making its debut on the US album
charts. In the UK, the album spun off
two charting singles, “Dumb Waiters”
and the original version of “Pretty in
Pink.” The latter song served as inspiration for the 1986 John Hughes film
of the same name, and was re-recorded
for the platinum-selling soundtrack.
In 1982, the band was reduced to a
four-piece with the departures of Morris and Kilburn. The band’s remaining
members moved permanently to New
York City, and they recorded their next
album, Forever Now, with producer
Todd Rundgren in Woodstock, New
York. This album contained “Love My
Way,” which became their first U.S.
chart single.
By the mid-80s, the band had be-

come a staple on both U.S. college and
modern rock radio stations. Simultaneously, they were experiencing mild but
consistent mainstream success, placing
several singles in the mid-range of the
pop charts on both sides of the Atlantic, Still, according to biographer Dave
Thompson they would “have more impact on future musicians than they ever
did in the marketplace.”
In 1986, the band recorded a saxinfused version of “Pretty in Pink” for
the soundtrack of the film of the same
name. Released as a single, it became
their biggest hit to that time in the U.S.
Butler later claimed that the success of
“Pretty in Pink” caused the band to be
pressured into entering the recording
studio to record a follow-up release
before they were ready. The result was
Midnight to Midnight, their biggest
Top 40 success to date. The album also
featured the single “Heartbreak Beat”,
which reached the U.S. Top 40.
The band split in the early 1990s
and re-formed in 2000. Currently,
the band continues to tour around the
world. The current Psychedelic Furs
touring lineup is Richard Butler, Tim
Butler (bass), Rich Good (guitar),
Mars Williams (saxophone), Amanda
Kramer (keyboard), and Paul Garisto
(drums).

Pato Banton & & The Now Generation

eggae singer and toaster Pato Banton was born in
London as Patrick Murray and moved to Birmingham,
England, at age 8. He received the nickname Pato (Jamaican Patois for “wise owl”) from his stepfather, and Banton
from the disc jockey slang for a “heavyweight DJ”.
During the early part of his career, Pato participated
in a talent show where he was proclaimed the winner by
judges Ranking Roger and Dave Wakeling of the ska revival band, The English Beat. This culminated in the single,
“Pato & Roger A Go talk,” which appears on the Beat’s
gold selling album, Special Beat Service. Shortly thereafter Pato performed the hit songs, “Hip-Hop Lyrical Robot”
and “King Step” on UB40’s Baggariddim and Little Baggariddim albums.
Banton’s debut album was the 1985, Mad Professorproduced Mad Professor Captures Pato Banton, followed
in 1987 by Never Give In, which included a collaboration
with Paul Shaffer and a follow-up to his earlier collaboration
with Ranking Roger with “Pato and Roger Come Again”.
After an EP in 1988, Banton released a more pop-oriented
LP, Visions of the World, followed by 1990’s Wize Up! (No
Compromise), which included a college radio hit in “Spirits in the Material World” (The Police cover). Banton then
worked on a live album and with Mad Professor, and then
released 1992’s Universal Love. After a 1994 British #1 hit
in Baby Come Back (originally by Eddy Grant performing
with The Equals), with Robin and Ali Campbell of UB40,
a best-of album was released, and Banton was invited by
Sting to join him on his “Cowboy Song” single.1996’s Stay
Positive was followed by Life Is a Miracle in 2000. which
received a Grammy nomination for Best Reggae Album in
2001. He will perform at the Sandbar with The Now Generation with opening act Onvi Sound System.
T
hird World started when keyboard player Michael
“Ibo” Cooper and guitarist (and cellist) Stephen “Cat”
Coore, who had originally played in The Alley Cats then
Inner Circle, left to form their own band. The original
drummer, Cornel Marshall, arrived via one of Jamaica’s
most renowned groups of the sixties, Tomorrow’s Children. The lineup for their first album as Third World also
included a singer named “Prilly” and percussionist Irving
“Carrot” Jarrett.
Their second album, 96 Degrees in the Shade (1977),
had several local hits and featured the band’s classic lineup.
“Prilly” was replaced by the distinctive vocalist “Bunny
Rugs” Clarke and an all-new rhythm section: Ritchie Daley
on bass and former Inner Circle drummer Willie Stewart,
who had defected to join the new band. Notable among its
eight tracks were “Rhythm of Life” and the album’s only
cover, “Dreamland” as recorded by Bunny Wailer.
Third World’s greatest success came in the late 1970s
and early 1980s, peaking with their cover version of The
O’Jays’ Now That We Found Love, a hit single on both
sides of the Atlantic in 1979. This song brought them to
the attention of Stevie Wonder, who worked with them and
wrote, along with Melody A McCully, their hit “Try Jah
Love.”
Amid claims of artistic differences “Carrot” split from
the band in the mid-1980s. The resulting five-piece band
then went on to record more commercial tunes like Sense
Of Purpose, Reggae Ambassador, Forbidden Love, and
Shine like a Blazing Fire.
Despite several more lineup changes, including the
departures of Cooper and Stewart, and a decline in mainstream success, the band are still recording and performing
up to the present day.
O
ne of the hottest spot to be on Memorial Day
Weekend is the Cocoa Beach Pier where you
have the beach and the waves, the bars and restaurants, the beach shops and a dock that reaches
800 feet over the Altlantic Ocean. There will be
continuous live entertainment with 20 different
bands all weekend and about 20,000 people are
expected. However, if you like a great party but a
cozier setting, there are many other venues to celebrate Memorial Day Weekend.
The Cocoa Beach Pier
became the number one hot
spot with a Beachfest that
started in 1989 and featured
all different kind of beach
activity and sports championship involving military,
firemen and police. In 2008,
its 20th anniversary, Beachfest as we knew it, ended.
“The pier was selected as
site for the NKF Surf Fest
over Labor Day Weekend.
We also created an annual beach concert like this
year’s Reggae Beach Splash
featuring international reggae bands,” explained Pier
president Giles Malone.
Since there is a limit for
special event permits per
venue, the Pier dropped the
sports championship - not
the fun. Last year’s Memorial Day weekend success
proved this to be the right
decision: the pier was as
busy as ever.

Beach knows how to throw
a party and on holiday
weekends they go all out
to feature continuous live
entertainment, beach atmosphere, fish tacos, pizza and
drink galore. You can walk
in with swim trunks and flip
flops.

on the beach and a popular
biker hang-out on holidays.
You can enjoy the huge outside deck overlooking the
ocean or the air-conditioner
inside. Don’t miss the one

on stage. It’s a good time guaranteed.
The Sebastian Beach
Inn is a destination if you
want to get out of town without driving far. The ocean
deck is huge with access to
the Atlantic Ocean. There’s
an outside stage with reggae
bands on Sunday afternoon.
On Memorial Day Weekend
the SBI features a Saturday
deck party with Kenny Williams starting at 2 pm, Sunday at 3 pm the Naturalistics,
and Monay at 3 pm Lost in
Da Mail. While you’re there
try their infamous Bahama
Mama.
The Crowne Plaza has
the most amazing ocean
deck and they make it
available to the public. Every Sunday afternoon you
can see and hear the finest

live reggae bands at Jamaikin Me Crazy starting at 2
pm, also on Memorial Day
Weekend. But what sets off
the weekend is an amazing Luau Feast & Show on
Friday, May 28th, featuring
musicians, hula, fire and
knife dancers and a gigantic luau buffet with roast
pig and carved teryaki pork
roast, coconut fried shrimp,
grilled mahi with mango salsa, fried plantains, seafood
pasta salad and much more
- you get the idea. The price
for feast and show is $39.95
per adult, $25.95 for children 4-12. The buffet starts
at 5:30 pm on the ocean
deck. Seating is limited and
reservations are required.

On Memorial Day Monday the Crowne will have a
live band on the ocean deck
once again, so you can have

luesfans and motorcycle enthusiasts, this is your
weekend at Earl’s Hideaway in Sebastian. The river and biker bar with the gorgeous view over the Indian River offers a parade of blues bands all three days,
May 29th, 30th and 31st. And as always at Earl’s - the
admission is free.
On Saturday the festival
starts with an All Veterans
Bike Parade, line up is at
noon. For more information
call the club. It is followed
by and All Veterans Memorial Day Ceremony. The
music starts at 2 pm and the
line-up is respectful.

“I Say Amen!”

I
t’s midnight on a Thursday night and the Reverend Billy
C. Wirtz is getting ready to record his radio show. He’s
spent the week searching the mines of music for some unearthed gems to give his people and now it’s time for church.
Billy has been breathing and eating gospel, R&B, boogie
woogie and good time rock’n’roll for nearly half a century.
His mind is a virtual database from the days of musical purity. He’s a syndicated radio host, a newspaper columnist, an
author and an ivory tickler by trade. He’s recorded at least
a dozen albums on various labels and has been featured on
NBC, USA network and the Nashville network. His biggest hit has permanent play on XM radio’s channel 151 and
he was even the house band for a night on WCW Monday
Night Nitro wrestling. He’s the undisputed heavyweight
reverend to the church of soul and his congregation knows
he is the path to syncopated salvation. Music is his sermon
and we are his flock.
Throughout the seventies and eighties Billy traveled
through the hot spots of music playing clubs across America. He had some success in his genre and had at least one
irreverent “hit” with a comedic parody about late night dining called “Waffle House Fire.” Don’t fool yourself folks,
just because you may see this cat walking the streets of your
town doesn’t mean he’s an average Joe. The reverend is
known and has achieved a level he likes to call “comfortably famous.”
When you hear Wirtz talk you can catch a slight southern accent and a bit of a low drawl to certain words. He
almost sings when he talks especially when he gets excited in a very traditional old school preacher style. I asked
him about his moniker and how he became the “reverend”
and although he actually is an ordained minister for several
mail-away churches he really holds to no particular religion
but music and can’t remember who it was that first referred
to him as “clergy” but somehow it stuck and “the reverend”
he is.
Billy was brought up in D.C. during the sixties and seventies. He remembers a time before pro tools and auto tune.
Before the digital revolution when to make it you had to be
great. There was no cut and paste on the computer screen.
There was one take, get it right. The purity of music in those
days is something Wirtz strives to hold onto and educate his
fans about.
“Both, on stage and on the radio, I try to educate and en20 - Brevard Live May 2010
tertain people about the roots of music and how it’s evolved.
If you can get both out of it, great, but I’ll settle for just one
if a have to. If I can tell people where it came from, then they
can understand why it’s going where it is. Everything on
radio sounds the same these days. The best way I ever heard
it described was that today’s music is just a promotion of a
promotion. Anytime the almighty dollar becomes involved
with art it gets watered down for the masses. I like to take it
back to a place before that.”
Some years back Billy landed on our little stretch of the
tropics and decided to call it home for a while. He hit some
rough times, but found some great friends who helped him
stand tall again and get back to what he does best.
“Without going into too much detail, I basically crashed
and burned, but I was lucky enough to find some really
amazing people that helped me get going again. This area
has some great emphasis on “great” musicians. After traveling the country I couldn’t believe how much talent is right
here in this little corner. It’s a touristy area and you have to
cater to that a bit, but I’ve found a few cool clubs that don’t
treat musicians like dirt which we all know is how it usually
goes.”
Billy takes a big risk playing his type of music in a
scene largely influenced by sing-along-crowds, but his talent is obvious and his quick wit and charm help him “win
‘em over every time.”
“People ask me all the time why I don’t play dueling
piano gigs. It’s because you have no freedom. They actually
give you a list of songs you have to play and sometimes
they even tell you what jokes to use for each song. I’ll say,
look just because I’m a man who plays piano doesn’t mean I
want to play “Piano Man.” I’ll play something else that I bet
you’ll like better though. Sometimes they go for it, sometimes they don’t. So many places are really just looking for
a jukebox with a pulse, but that’s not why we do what we do.
I understand that to be an entertainer you have to entertain.
I mean if there isn’t a cover at the door then your job as a
performer is to basically sell drinks. You are there to keep
people drinking and spending money, it’s your job. But that
doesn’t mean you can’t enjoy the artistry of your craft at the
same time.”
Billy comes across as a bit of a court jester and admits
to being cast in that roll many times throughout the years,
but underneath that he is a true heart beat for the life of real
music. In addition to writing, gigging and his radio show he
constantly involves himself in charities across the country to

help keep music programs alive in our schools.
“I’m constantly worried about kids growing up now
with no real education about music. Turn on the pop stations
and you will hear at least half a dozen songs with sampled
hooks that were lifted from older artists. Most kids have no
idea that that chorus actually belonged to and was written
by someone great twenty or thirty years ago. It’s a tragedy
the way the music business is being run now. We need more
musicians and less producers. It’s true that I always have a
million things going and never have enough time for any of
it, but it’s also true that everything I do is important and I
can’t leave any of it out.”
So what’s going on with Billy now?
“What’s going on is that I finally have the band I’ve
always dreamed of: Reverend Billy and the Prophets. It’s an
amazing time for me!”
Wirtz turned 55 this year, you wouldn’t know it by his
level of energy. At any given time this man has 5,000 things
going on and now on top of that he’s formed a new trio and
is getting ready to explode. With players like Kerry Morris
on bass and Tommy DeQuatro on drums, Reverend Billy
and the Prophets are setting a new bar for an old genre.
“We’re packing places and getting encores like you
wouldn’t believe, man. The other night people were slam-
ming beer cans down they were so worked up…its truly incredible. This really is the holy grail of bands for me. These
guys are so in tune with me I don‘t even have to speak, they
just intuitively know exactly where I‘m going with something and what to do next. Its nice to know that you can
still start another chapter this far into the game. I‘m really
excited about playing music again and you just can‘t have a
better feeling than that.”
Billy’s life has never been boring, but just like anyone
else he’s had his ups and downs. For now though it seems
he’s floating pretty high. His show is doing very well, he
has surrounded himself with a great bunch of friends and
his music has reached a new height with the birth of the
Prophets.
“I have to say, after all these years I feel like I’m in
a really good place right now. My friends are amazing, I
have the band of my dreams and I live near the beach. I’m
healthy and happy and doing what I love to do. What more
could I ask for?”

and Tuesday night at the Sandbar in Cocoa Beach, and every Sunday night at Lou’s Blues in Indian Harbour Beach.

he latest word to be bandied about on the news these
days is vitriol meaning, “something highly caustic or
severe in effect, as criticism.” You’ve been hearing that in
regards to the many protests, tea parties, and the general
contempt for the current administration. We have people
actually threatening our congress people with bodily
harm and people spitting on senators and calling them the
”N” word. Then there was the guy who got arrested for
threatening Nancy Pelosi’s life! His mom came out and
said it was because he was watching FOX news. People
are walking around espousing the similarities between
Obama and Hitler! Really?!?! Do you guys really think
that?
Is the extreme right wing of the Republic party
has become the voice of the “tea baggers”? Well, it’s
interesting how “Carl Rovian” this whole scenario is. The
spreading of hate and fear, dividing the masses, and good
sound bites for the press (like, “You lie!’). The right wing
now talks about “less intrusive government,” yet wants the
government to make it illegal to have an abortion. They
talk about “individual freedoms,” yet will not support gay
marriage. They talk about “balancing the federal budget”
and the “Constitution being trampled on,” yet where were
they when the previous administration was running this
deficit up, started 2 wars without any way to pay for it,
spent TRILLIONS of dollars, who’s fiscal responsibility
consists of the failure of Wall Street, the banking industry,
and the housing market? What do they think about the
signing of the “Patriot Act?”
Why is there so much hatred for a President who wants
to take on the major insurance companies? Are the “tea
baggers” on the side of big insurance? Do you really think
the health care bill is going to kill grandma? Is it really a
socialist plot? (Personally, I’d prefer that to Bush’s fascist
reign of tyranny.) I guess, then, we shouldn’t have public
libraries and schools, or Medicare or Social Security. Is
it not one of the few jobs the government really has to
oversee the general welfare of its citizens? Doesn’t that
include keeping multi-national corporations from stealing
your money and stopping insurance companies from
ripping off the general public?
It’s OK to have an opinion and voice it. It’s NOT OK
to threaten someone’s life because they do not agree with
you. It’s not OK to spew vitriol and hate because Rush
says to. This kind of behavior will be the downfall of that
movement if it persists. It’s OK to have a RESPECTFUL
debate, it’s not OK to have gangs of people scream and
yell so as to deter another from speaking. It didn’t start out
this way.
I’ve been a libertarian thinking kind of guy for a
long time. I supported Ron Paul since the 80’s. This last
election spawned the Campaign for Liberty from Paul’s
supporters. This is where the tenets of the original tea party
came from. Sound monetary policies, limited government,
and maintaining personal freedom was the basis of the
movement. Who knew it would turn into a screaming pile
of vitriol.
I think we have to look at the big picture. The media
is being used big time to try to make us fearful and hateful
and arguing. Why? Mainly because “… divided we fall.”
We must allow respect and intelligence to usurp the
stupidity and hatred that’s out there now. The founding
fathers wanted real people to run the government, not
career politicians, corporations and lobbyists. Vote out
anybody who has ties to a lobbying group or industry.
Tell your representatives to make the banks accountable
for what they have done. Don’t let the drug and insurance
companies rip us off anymore. (What’s wrong with the
public option?). Be educated about the issues. Stop pork.
Protest in the streets, state your mind, tweet, whatever, but
let’ss stop the vitriol.
United we stand!

Wailers. That’s Bob
Marley’s band. 1977s
hit song “One Love” has
become the most popular reggae song, it’s even
been the soundtrack for
the TV commercial of the
Jamaican Tourism Bureau. Bob Marley passed
away May 1981.
So here we have The
Original Wailers. Do we?
Yes, we do!
The Original Wailers
began its next life starting
in September 2008 by former Wailers, Al Anderson
and Junior Marvin. Al Anderson and Junior Marvin
are most known for their
lead guitar and backing
vocal work while playing
with Bob Marley & The
Wailers in the 1970s and
early 1980s. In 2008, The
Original Wailers embarked
on their first world tour.
They have been busy
ever since touring and
staying in close touch with
their fans. A new CD release was scheduled this
summer, but there hasn’t
been an update lately. The
official website also “will
be coming soon.”
So what if they are
not well organized! It is the
job of The Original Wailers
to spread the love and the
good vibe live on stage.
And that’s exactly
what they are doing.

Although he is a regular performer in Central
Florida up and down the
Space Coast, he has also
performed in Montreal,
New York City, Saratoga
Springs, Boston, Las Vegas, and in D.C.
His standard sets with
his Jazz Trio “Upbeat” include the music of the Gershwins, Cole Porter, Harold Arlen, Johnny Mercer,
and many more as well as
Bebop and beyond artists

made a recent in-store appearance at Barnes & Noble
in Orlando. Promoting his debut book A Shot of Poison,
Chris met fans, hosted a Q&A session, gave a lively reading
of various excerpts and, of course, signed stacks of books.
“Sales are through the roof,” the store manager commented
during the two hour promotion which she referred to as a
“huge success.” Given the favorable reviews the book is
receiving from critics and buyers, Chris is currently scheduling additional in-store signings at various Barnes & Noble locations through the spring and summer.
Don Fournier
Passed Away
A
native of Rhode Island, drummer Don Fournier has
four decades worth of blues experience under his belt.
He has played with a long list of accomplished bands on
the New England scene, opening for Roomful of Blues,
KoKo Taylor, Jerry Lee Lewis, Duke Robillard, and Ronny
Earl among others. Since he relocated to Florida, Don has
worked with some of the most respected musicians around.
among them George Terry and Big Bill Morganfield. His
last band-stay was with Art Harris & The Z-Tones.
He fell ill with cancer and passed away April 22nd,
2010. Don will be missed in our local music scene. He was
one of the friendliest people.

Sense of Urgency
ormally with any band Dave Pastorius is involved in, you are almost always going to assume it to be
about the bass tracks. That isn’t the
case here. Pastorius has surrounded
himself with musicians of the same
caliber and the results are phenomenal.
Just as with the first album they have
Pastorius on bass, Al Brodeur on guitar
and Anthony Darmana on percussion.
But now with this, their second album,
comes two replacements in the band.
Bjarne Jannik Kjaer on drums and
Dave Hoag on keys.
This album is crazy long at sixteen tracks, but well worth the listen.
It gets a bit schizo at times too, but
on second listen I wasn’t so surprised
and noticed the beauty in the transitions. With songs that change key and
rhythm so quickly and so often, you
can’t help but be amazed at the skill
level these guys have achieved. They
make what has got to be very difficult
seem very easy. Too many tracks for
me to go through them all here, but I
can tell you my favorites are track four
- “Dune Buggy,” track five - “Paredes”
probably named after Brendon Paredes, the engineer on the album, and
track fourteen - “Espresso.” For an extra surprise check out track ten - “Extra
Ecclesiam-Lacrimosa”, a new take on
a bit of Mozart. Highlights for me were
the insane rhythms and flawlessly polished guitar tracks.

month’s issue, Brevard’s music scene lost a
great friend recently with
the passing of Siggy’s owner, Shawn Sigafoos. For
twenty years Shawn was a
constant supporter of bands
and entertainers throughout
the area. This month many
of those very performers are
giving back.
On Saturday and Sunday, May 29th and 30th,
Siggy’s American Bar in
Palm Bay will be hosting a
weekend-long musical memorial in Shawn’s honor.
What makes this event different from typical benefits
in the past is that this one is
all about the music. No poker runs, no raffle tickets, no
“tin cups” - just a non-stop,
two day celebration of local
live music honoring a great
friend who has done so
much to promote the scene
for so long.

New Hot Sauce
Brevard’s popular guitarist
puts a new twist on wings,
pork and seafood.
here’s a new cowboy in town, six
shooter’s in hand, and he’s on the
bottle of 44 Wing Sauce. The Melbourne based 44 Wing Sauce company
manufactures a shelf-stable condiment
sauce used on chicken, pork, and seafood. The sauce started as a chicken
wing coating, but customers and food
industry reviewers have found it delicious on pork and seafood as well.
Who’s the creator of this new wing
sauce? - No other than Brevard’s popular guitarist Kenny Michaels.
The medium sauce was recently
reviewed in Hot Sauce Daily.com a
reputed authority on sauces, and they
said “if there ever was a gourmet wing
sauce, this would be it”. The reviewers
at Wingville! in Chicago, said “ the 44
Wing Sauces were well received, and
we found them excellent on pork at a
recent Wingville event”.
The flavor and base of 44 Wing
Sauce was created from over four years
of trial and error testing and tasting.
“We use a blend of Cajun and Italian
spices along with pure Florida honey
to give it our unique taste”, says Ken
Michaels. The Melbourne based company currently has a hot and a medium
sauce in retail outlets throughout the

T
here is probably no more appropriate place to
find Kenny Cohen entertaining than the Surf
lounge. Granted, the restaurant opened on the
corner of A1A and the Minuteman Causeway when
Cohen was still in diapers, but both the restaurant
and the entertainer are two of few left today who
have bragging rights that they were on the scene
during the years that Cocoa Beach became famous. They will be remembered for being trailblazers.
“I’ve played at all of them,” says Cohen, recalling the
years when tourists and astronauts danced at the Mousetrap
and the Caravelle Lounge and the pink elephant stood in
front of Lee Caron’s Carnival Club. He was in high school
when his family relocated to Satellite Beach in 1962, had
played professionally overseas, and says, “Although I
looked like I was 12, I had to act like I was 21” to play in
local clubs.
Early on he also toured and did studio work. Although
considered a home town boy today, he can click off famous
musicians with whom he has been in shows such as Rod
Stewart, BB King, Carlos Santana, Jimi Hendrix and the
Eagles. He is even mentioned in Wikipedia, the free Internet encyclopedia. He played and sang on “Gimme, Gimme
Good Lovin’,” the pop one-hit wonder cut by Crazy Elephant in 1969.
Cohen still looks great. Surfing at the Cocoa Beach
Pier has kept his body muscled and youthful. Shocks of
longish gray-blond hair fall casually over his earring-em-
bellished ears. He is attired this evening in a handsome
gray pin-stripe vested suit, according respect to the patrons
of the Surf, a far cry from the beach attire he often wears in
more casual venues. Bob Gross, a retired sea captain who
plays a mean harmonica has joined Cohen tonight and the
duo really sounds fine.
Cohen has a reputation for being attuned to his audience. Dot Woodward and her husband, snowbirds from
Dayton, Ohio, who are sitting at the bar share that they have
been following Cohen since they first saw him 12 years ago
at Dino’s Jazz Club (once located in Cocoa Beach on the
SR 520 causeway).
Kenny is delighted by their comment. “That’s beyond
nice. Wow! I’ve been blessed by whoever planned this
mysterious thing called life to do the things I’ve done, and
survive the precarious lifestyle and social scene I’ve lived
in. I have an immense amount of gratitude that I can still
do what I’m doing. You know, without the people we are
nothing.”
And I know he means every word of it. He once told
me, “Everybody likes to think that this is a glamorous profession. It’s really not that way. That’s a delusion. This is
my calling, in a spiritual sense if you like. I never sought a
path. It’s as if you have a duty and you really don’t know
where you are going.”
“I could have never planned my life better.”
At this writing, Cohen is playing in the lounge of the
Surf restaurant in Cocoa Beach Weds. through Sat. from

DANCE 101 at Emerald City
M
elbourne has its share of bars and night clubs
with live music. But you have to look for a real
DANCE club where you can revel in “gettin down
and dirty.”
Out on the town one
night, a friend suggested we
stop in to an unassuming and
inconspicuous location on
Babcock Street. It used to be
a popular Taco Bell back in
the day but we had heard it
was now a trendy night club
called Emerald City that has
hot dance parties four nights
a week. We didn’t know
what to expect - maybe
we’ll find some midgets or
some sort of tin man or how
about the wonderful Wizard
of Oz? Quite the contrary.
We got there just in time
for Happy Hour which starts
at 4 pm. Dance clubs are not
typically known for their low
drink prices but this “City”
is an exception. Prices are
so good, I actually bought a
round! We found some great
specials and a full selection
of beverages including top
shelf, calls, beer, wine and
of course, champagne. The
bartender Hug, a popular
local mixologist, poured
me a scrumptious chocolate
martini complete with fresh
chocolate shavings! I noticed that they serve espresso for those who prefer being caffeinated rather than
intoxicated.
We went ga-ga because
the club is sleek and spacious despite its rather modest outward appearance but
what really caught my eye or should I say my feet, was
the dance floor! I hustled
over there to show off my
new M.C. Hammer moves.
The music was crisp and
lasers darted everywhere
while the Dj provided us
with our favorite beats. We
kept up with sexy singers
and their newest music videos via the flat screen TV.
We found out that they
have DJ’s on Friday and Saturdays but Wednesday night
is karaoke and you can sing
your favorite dance tune. So
what if you’re the only bore
in the group that’s not a dancin’ queen or macho man?
You’ll find others like your-
self mingling for new facebook friends or shooting
pool on the brand new table
while watching the performers on the dance floor.

o It Yourself! DIY projects are
spreading like wild fire. We
see something we like and make
it ourselves. Not only does it help
our budget during this economic
trench, but we also get to tap into
our creative side which can also be
therapeutic. I love the idea of recycling old items and making them
useful again or giving something a
new use. Here are a few ideas for
DIY projects for you to try at home.
I am using some for the wedding
and then in the home.
love the chalkboard paint because you
can use it for so many other things. I
also painted a wine bottle and used it
as a vase. I put a few mint leaves with
the flowers for a touch of greenery that
adds an amazing scent.
For glassware, you can tape off an
area and paint. After it dries, remove
the tape and you have party glasses that
your guests can write their names on.
You can also tape off an area on wine
or champagne glasses for the bride and
groom. They can later be reused at dinner parties for years to come.
Chalkboard Menu
I started collecting vintage frames
from thrift stores, yard sales, and antique shops. I didn’t have a specific
goal in mind but I just knew I’d use
them for something, whether to display my photography or create a new
project. Here, I have a 20x24 inch
black frame. I cut a thin board to fit
and painted it with chalkboard paint
from any hardware store.
I love the idea of writing the menu
on the chalkboard for the wedding reception. After the wedding we can still
make use of it and hang it inside our
home. I think the flaws keep the vintage look and you don’t have to put so
much effort into making it perfect. I
Record Bowls
You can find records as cheap as
a quarter at some local thrift stores.
When making record bowls, I turn the
oven on 400 degrees and turn the oven
light on so I can watch the progress.
The reason for this is because the records warp fast. First I put an oven safe
bowl in the oven and center the record
on the bowl. You’ll see it slowly warp
around the bowl. At this point you can
take it out and keep that shape, or put
a pot over the record and bowl to form
a tighter shaped bowl. After you push
the pot over the record, bring it out of
the oven. The record hardens fast so
while it is still hardening, gently take it
out. The reason for this is because you
don’t want it to harden around the bowl
and be impossible to remove. You have
to act quick because it melts and hardens quickly. Now you have a cute bowl
that can be used for anything!

Link Johnsten
L
ink Johnsten is one of the rocks on which the town
of Eau Gallie was built. His ever-willing enthusiasm and participation have supported the town in its
evolution into an art district and he is greatly respected
for the breadth of civic and cultural contributions he
has made to his chosen community during the 35 years
he has been in business.
Johnsten, 59, moved with his family from Seattle to Eau
Gallie when he was seven-years-old. His father, who was
employed by Boeing Corp., transferred to a job at the Cape
on the Minuteman project.
The young man’s future employment was triggered
in the late ‘60s when he worked as a delivery boy for the
Eau Gallie Florist in his last few years of Eau Gallie High
School. The entire staff pitched in to help create arrangements for unexpectedly large orders such as funerals and he
discovered that he enjoyed the work.
Today, in the world of floral designers, Link Johnsten
is a rock star. His experience includes decorating the White
House at Christmas, a state dinner for the Poets’ Society,
two different presidential inaugurations and several floats
for the Rose Bowl Parade (including the Queen’s float). For
the past 14 years he has been called to Hollywood to design
floral extravaganzas for the Oscars.
Before Walt Disney World opened in 1971, Johnsten
parlayed the experience he had received at the local florist
shop into a job at the new theme park being built in Or42 - Brevard Live May 2010
lando. He was hired by the Special Events Department and
worked for set decorators from Los Angeles preparing the
floral window dressing throughout the park. His experience
included designing Christmas décor for the lobbies of new
hotels that were springing up at Lake Buena Vista, as well
as designing seasonal decorations for buildings, lampposts,
trees and parade floats.
In 1975, just shy of working for five years at Disney,
the Link Johnsten family, which by now included a son
and two daughters, returned to Eau Gallie. He and his wife
Alexis bought Eau Gallie Florist, initially moving it across
the street from the Eau Gallie Post Office on St Clair Street;
relocating it to its current building on Highland Avenue in
1988.
The ’80s were an especially busy time for the designer.
He traveled throughout the country entering competitions,
winning “so much silver that I didn’t know what to do with
it all.” He did a lot of magazine work such as designing for
counter books for Teleflora, etc., and designed homes for
magazines such as Architectural Digest. He even created
headdresses for events like the American Diabetes Society
Ball in Orlando. When the tempo was no longer pleasurable,
he stopped. “Knowing when to stop is important,” he said.
Johnsten might have stopped entering competitions and
traveling a lot, but he remained in high gear locally. Since
his first civic event for the Brevard Symphony Orchestra
at Hacienda del Sol in Merritt Island and teaming with his
friend decorator Barbara Ann Barbara on the Parade of
Homes before her unfortunate death, he has found that “I
enjoy being involved in the community. I know it’s good
for business, but it’s also very satisfying. I really believe
that our purpose here is to help each other through this
difficult experience.”
His eyes sparkled with memories and he said, “Of all
the fun stuff I’ve done, I believe that the Rose Bowl floats
taught me the most and were the most interesting. Everything has to be living – organic – not processed. I’ve
used sliced red potatoes for roofs, seaweed has provided
texture for cactus and split peas and paprika became cactus blossoms. The designers [of the floats] have brilliant
minds. They also have to know what can be applied so
many days out and what kinds of glue can be used. Only
white glue holds rice and onion skins. I use these applications on everything I do.”
Currently Johnsten is on the boards of the Brevard Art
Museum and the Brevard Cultural Alliance, he supports
the BSO, and is a member of the Strawbridge Art League.
His name seems to be associated with every cultural event
in the area. For example, he originated and continues to
chair the annual Artworks show on Highland Avenue every November and was on the team that conceived of the
Fall for the Arts project that has become an annual event.
He is well known for generous contributions of product,
gift certificates, and sometimes hands-on assistance freely
given to any number of charities and non-profit civic organizations. For example, his business has designed and
donated a tree every year for the Junior League Festival of
Trees fund raiser since its inception.
A potter by avocation, Johnsten has thrown clay since
he was a teenager. There was a time when he made containers for his arrangements and entered art shows. These
days he makes time daily at both the office and at home to
enjoy his two-year-old grandson, Jet, with whom he has a
special relationship. As for the pottery studio sitting idle
at his beautiful riverside home, “It will be there when I
need it.”

Brush
Off

S
ince the beginning of time men and women have been
dating. Whether it was over a glass of wine or a piece of
forbidden fruit, the genders have been mixing it up throughout the ages trying to find that one special match. There are
highlights and happiness to this scenario, but unfortunately
that of course also means there are some pitfalls, rejection
to name one. For as long as there have been lonely hearts
searching for another, there has always been rejection. Fear
of rejection drives the downside of dating almost as much
as hope drives the ambitious side, Along the way eventually
every one of us will experience both sides of the infamous
“brush off.” Submitted for your approval and entertainment
are two such scenarios I recently experienced. One from
either side of the game.
April sat near the end of my bar during a normal, middle of the week lunch rush, sipping on a diet coke. She had
bright blue eyes, long dark hair and a smile that could help
you find your car keys in the dark. Every chance I could I
made sure to check on her and make small talk throwing as
much clever bartender charm as I could muster. It’s always
a tricky situation when you want to hit on a customer at
your place of work. You have to be sure they will be receptive and not feel uncomfortable or you could risk losing a
tip and maybe even catching some heat from the management. In the end I decided I hadn’t really had enough time
to cultivate any real rapport and thought it best to leave it to
the fates. She paid her bill and left before I could even say
goodbye. I checked around where she had been sitting, but
to my disappointment there was no phone number graffitied napkin.
That night when I got home I flipped on the computer and surfed over to myspace. There was a new message

waiting for me. I clicked my “inbox” waiting to see what
new band wanted me to come see them, and to my surprise
there was a message from April. Apparently in the information age the old ‘number on the bar’ trick had been replaced
by internet stalking. Smiling, I replied and a few messages
later I was presented with her number. I wrote that I would
call her the next day and happily closed my laptop.
Now of course in the new millennium when you say
“call” it also refers to the more popular form of communication - texting, and that’s what I did. It’s less invasive and
easier to carry on a conversation at work, so around noon
I sent a simple “HI! HOW’S YOUR DAY GOING?”. Two
hours later I still had no reply. Hmm. When I got home I
checked myspace again. Nothing. An entire day went by
with no texts or emails and I knew that was it. I’ve seen the
signs before and I knew not to hope for more.
So what happened? Why would a girl who initiated
conversation and gave me her number unsolicited all of the
sudden decide to ignore me? Hard to say for sure, but most
likely something changed in her life that had nothing to do
with me. Maybe she met someone better for her. Maybe she
got back together with her ex. Maybe she was a Russian spy
and the CIA caught up with her, took her into custody and
confiscated her phone all before she had a chance to reply,
who knows? All I really know is that I was indisputably
brushed off.
Tammy was another patron at my bar. She was having
a rough day and came in for a drink alone. I like to perpetuate the stereotype that bartenders are part psychologist and
try to help when I can with some friendly conversation and
maybe a little advice when the opportunity presents itself.
We had a nice chat and when she left she told me to stop
at the restaurant where she worked as a waitress later and
she would buy me a beer. It was a nice invitation and she
was cute, so I decided to take her up on it.
As soon as I walked in the door she bee-lined right
to me, pointed out a table and asked what my friend and I
wanted to drink. Five minutes later we had our beers, and
I couldn’t help but be a little intrigued with her forwardness. An hour or so later we were called away and had to
ask for our bill. When she brought it she looked at me and
said we should have a good night and be safe so nothing
happened to me before I got a chance to ask her out. Once
again her ambition was sexy.
Two days later she texted and asked me to meet up
with her and a couple of friends for drinks. I was tired but
she was persistent and in the end I was driving to the bar.
Everything went fine and everyone was very nice. Conversation was good and I like beer, so I was content. The
only thing that bugged me was how pushy she was starting to get. I really needed some breathing room and I was
trying hard to get that point across without being impolite
but it was becoming more difficult.
She was a really nice girl and if we just had some
innocuous small talk, there might have been something
there, but instead I felt very pressured, very quickly and
red flags started launching everywhere. I had to leave and
I did.
The next day her text asked when we could get together again. I told her I was sick in bed. That was the
truth, but I was also glad to have a couple of days to think
about if I wanted to pursue this or not. In the beginning I
really liked how forward she was. It made me feel special
and wanted. But in the end it scared the hell out of me.
I’m not calling her crazy at all. She was a very smart,
very pretty girl who seemed to have a big heart. Normally
everything I go for. She just came on too strong.
Maybe it was all me. Maybe I was just being a coward, I don’t know. What I do know is how I felt and I
couldn’t do anything about that.
I knew I couldn’t explain things to her. I knew it
would either hurt her feelings and make her feel like a
psycho or she would try to argue her case and talk me into
seeing her again. Neither of those scenarios sounded acceptable, so I took the easy way out and decided to cut it
off and stop talking to her. I brushed her off.
Brushing someone off, getting brushed off - none of it
ever feels good. If it does, you need to check your pulse.
Is it a cowardly way out? Sometimes. But I also think
there are times when it’s a necessary evil. It’s a dark spot
in the world of romance for sure, but without the bad
there would be no good and the good parts of romance
definitely make up for all the bad.
