Introducing Girl Time
THIS ISSUE: GIRL TIME | POHLAD CHALLENGE GRANT | DONALDSON | PREP SQUADS Our Donor Newsletter FALL/WINTER 2015 Introducing Girl Time Our inaugural Girl Time event was a huge success! On Saturday, September 26, over 500 people filled The Works Museum to learn from women engineers about everything from pavement to thermal cameras. Presenters from local companies demonstrated the astounding variety of science and engineering behind their businesses. High school and middle school robotics and app development teams inspired girls with their creations. Those who attended the VIP Breakfast enjoyed learning about the engineering of microwave popcorn with Anita Hall, General Mills engineer and former Works Board member. Visitors asked if Girl Time is an annual event, and we’re thrilled to answer—yes! Save the date of September 17 for Girl Time 2016 and stay tuned for more information. We’re excited to bring women engineers, hands-on activities, and a more in-depth workshop with a visiting engineer as part of the day’s fun. We greatly appreciate the help of everyone who made this event possible, especially our Platinum sponsors: 3M, Boston Scientific, and Emerson Process Management. Without these sponsors, or the help of all the presenters and volunteers, Girl Time 2015 could not have become a reality. Thank You, Donaldson! Fall Prep Squads Get Things Done We’re excited to announce a $25,000 gift from Donaldson for our Gateway program. Donaldson and The Works believe all children should have access to quality engineering education. Gateway provides subsidies for field trips, camps, and more so that low-income students and families can enjoy The Works Museum. Without these subsidies, many children would not be able to experience our exhibits and programs. Last year, we provided subsidies to over 7,000 children. Thank you, Donaldson, for helping us provide engaging engineering learning to all students. Many thanks to volunteers from 3M, Boston Scientific, and Xcel Energy who donated time to The Works this fall. We buy materials for our workshops in bulk, and we’re grateful for volunteer help preparing those materials for our programs. These two volunteer groups counted out hundreds of classroom kits, and packaged more than 1,000 balloon car kits for our Design Lab. Our staff — and participants — thank you! Pohlad Challenge Grant Thank you to everyone who joined together and contributed towards our matching grant challenge. We’re so pleased these members, camp families, and others who love The Works Museum are now also donors. It’s especially exciting that their first gifts have double the impact due to matched funds. Thanks to your generosity, we raised nearly $3,000—every dollar of which is matched by the Pohlad Family Foundation. As a small museum, $6,000 means a lot to us. We rely on contributions for over 40% of our annual budget. These donations allow us to buy materials like motors and batteries for our camps and workshops. Additionally, they make it possible to develop new camps and activities for kids to enjoy. This summer we unveiled 21 new camps—a feat we achieved through the support of our community. We’ll use the funds from this matching grant challenge to continue this work and help ensure that all children have access to quality engineering education. Jill’s Notes As we celebrate fall and the beginning of a new academic year, I want to take this opportunity to thank you for supporting everything we do at The Works Museum. Every year we are re-energized by the enthusiasm of all the young people who discover engineering through our hands-on activities and programs. I am grateful to work with our wonderful staff, volunteers, partners, and you to encourage all children to innovate and explore their world. We’re looking forward to a great year—we hope to see you at the Museum soon!
