Average Monthly Page Volume is an average range of pages customers plan to print on the device
each month. Lexmark recommends that the number of pages per month be within the stated range for
optimum device performance, based on factors including: supplies replacement intervals, paper loading
intervals, speed, and typical customer usage.
² Duty Cycle is defined as the maximum monthly usage verified using multi-shift operation. The usage
rate can be limited by application and run mode.

Note: Starter cartridges cannot be swapped between printers for troubleshooting purposes as it will post
a 32.37 Unsupported Cartridge Error message.
Note: Before using a new toner cartridge, it should sit (fully packaged) at room temperature and
humidity to allow it to acclimate to the environment prior to use, preferably for 24 hours. The minimum
recommended acclimation period is 4 hours. If the unit is not allowed to acclimate for this period of time,

Theory of Operation
X73x and X74x Fax System
When faxing, the Transmitter calls the
receiving fax machine and sends a CNG
(Calling tone). The CNG signals an
auto receive fax machine that another
fax is making the call.
The receiving fax machine picks up the
line and sends a CED (Call Station
Identification) signal to tell the
Transmitter it has connected to a fax
machine.
The receiving fax sends a Preamble
signal which conditions the phone line
and synchronizes the two modems.
The Receiver sends a set of binary
(digital) signals to the transmitting fax:
•
NSF (Non-Standard Facilities)
tells the Transmitter of its fax
machine type and proprietary
modes. The NSF is optional and
not required for
sending/receiving faxes.
•
CSI (Called Subscriber
Identification) passes the
Receiver’s phone number to
the transmitting fax. The CSI is
optional and not required for
sending/receiving faxes.
•
DIS (Digital Identification) sends
the Receiver’s capabilities such
paper size, modem speeds,
resolution modes, etc. The DIS
signal is required for a
successful fax transmission.
After the Transmitter gets the DIS
signal, it responds to the information by
issuing its own Preamble similar to the Transmitter above. The last signal in the Preamble is the DCS
(Digital Command Signal) which commands the receiving fax to receive a document. The DCS signal is
required for successful sending/receiving faxes.

The Transmitter initiates a Modem Training and TCF (Training Check Flag) to determine the best speed
in which to send the fax.
• If the Receiver correctly receives the TCF signal, then it sends a CFR (Confirmation to Receive)
back to the Transmitter. This tells the Transmitter that everything is OK.
•
If the TCF is not received properly, the receiving fax sends a FTT (Failure to Train) signal. This
alerts the Transmitter to try a lower modem speed and the Modem Training process begins
again. A poor quality phone line will affect this process and lower the transmission speed.
After the Transmitter receives the CFR command it sends the picture information while each line of data
is checked for errors on the receiving side. Once the entire picture data is sent, the Transmitter sends
an RTC (Return to Control), Preamble and EOP (End of Procedures) signal. This tells the Receiver the
full page was sent. If more pages are to follow, the Transmitter sends an EOM (End of Message) or MPS
(Multi Page Signal).
If the data was received properly, the Receiver sends a Preamble and an MCF (Message Confirmation)
signal. In response, the Transmitter sends a Preamble and a DCN (Disconnect) which tells the receiving
fax it is disconnecting the phone line.
If the data had errors that exceed the maximum allowed, however, the Receiver sends an RTN (Retrain
Negative) or RTP (Retrain Positive) signal. Both of these signals indicate that that the data received
exceeded the maximum allowed errors. At this point, the Transmitter starts the Modem Training and
TCF (Training Check Flag) again to determine the best speed in which to send the fax.
X73x and X74x Scanner System
The document scanning section consists of a scanner that reads a single sheet document placed on the
flatbed glass and an Auto Document Feeder (ADF) that reads the pages of a multiple-sheet document.
The X736de/X738de/ X738dte and X746de/X748de/X748dte can read the pages of a duplexed document
scanned through the ADF.
Scanning at the Flatbed:
When scanning a document from the flatbed, the page is placed face-down on the glass bed and a CCD
Imaging Unit is moved by a carriage motor back and forth underneath the glass. The starting and ending
position of the Imaging Unit is determined by a Home Position Sensor.
Scanning from the Auto Document Feeder (ADF):
When scanning using the ADF, the carriage assembly moves the CCD Imaging Unit to a fixed position.
The paper feeds into the ADF and is moved across the CCD to the fixed scan position. If the scanner is
capable of duplex scanning, the paper is recirculated into a special paper path and the duplexed side is
transferred across the same light source as the simplexed side.

CCD Imaging Unit:
The entire CCD Imaging Unit is made up of a lamp, multiple mirrors, a lens and the CCD Array (Charge
Coupled Device) which contains small light sensitive diodes.
The image on the page is acquired as light from the lamp bounces off the document and is reflected by
the mirrors into the lens; the lens focuses the image into the CCD Array. The CCD passes the analog
signal to the AFE (analog front end) which converts the analog image to a digital image and sends the
information to the printer’s hardware. See Figure 1: CCD Array.
The CCD differs depending on the printer; the X73x scanners use a Xenon lamp and the X74x scanners
use an LED Lamp. The scanning process is identical regardless of the CCD Lamp type and in the event
the CCD should ever need to be replaced, the repair process is the same.

Electrophotographic Process
This color laser printer uses the Electrophotographic process (EP Process) to image toner onto the media
via a tandem (in-line) system. This system contains four color cartridge assemblies (cyan, yellow,
magenta, and black). The Electrophotographic Process steps are as follows:
•
Charge – the Photoconductor Drum surface is evenly charged with electricity from the
Charge Roll (located inside the photoconductor unit) by the HVPS board,
•
Expose – the Printhead (laser) exposes the photoconductor with light and creates a Latent
Image on the surface by partially discharging the area exposed,
•
Develop – toner from the Developer Roll (located in the toner cartridge unit) adheres to the
latent image on the surface of the photoconductor. This happens because of a difference in
charge potential between the two surfaces,
•
Transfer – an electrical charge is sent to each of the four Transfer Rolls inside the Transfer
Module. Due to the difference in charge potential, toner is transferred from the
Photoconductor Drum to the surface of the media as it passes each color station,
•
Fuse – Toner is bonded permanently to the media by heat and pressure,
•
Clean/Erase – The Photoconductor Drum and Transfer Module surfaces are cleaned of
residual toner. This printer does not have erase lamps.
If a component fails, it is important to recognize at which step the failure took place. By knowing this, you
can determine the source of the problem. Understanding the EP Process is the key to troubleshooting
print quality problems.
The next two pages illustrate the EP Components in a cross-sectional of a C73x printer. The X73x, C74x
and X74x printers have the same EP components as the C73x printer.

Display
The display shows messages and pictures that communicate the
status of the printer.
Stop/Cancel
Stops all printer activity. A list of options is offered once “Stopped”
appears on the display.
Navigation

Several hidden menus exist to configure advanced settings, troubleshoot problems or obtain additional
printer information. The settings contained in these menus should not be changed unless it is
specifically requested by the Service Manual or technical support. Changing the settings may cause
improper operation of the printer.
For a complete list of these menus, consult the Service Manual for the printer.
To enter the Diagnostic Menu, do the following:
•
Turn off the printer.
•
Press and hold Right  and Down .

Turn on the printer.

message, including how to clear it.

Print Quality Diagnostic Tips
General Terminology
Before diagnosing print quality problems, take a moment to understand the concepts below. This will
prevent confusion when diagnosing or escalating a problem.
1. Know your paper orientation when diagnosing a print quality issue.
-
References to direction such as horizontal and vertical must be made holding the paper
in portrait orientation (long edges to the left and right) with the printed side facing you.
Don’t hold the paper in landscape orientation. See below.
2. Know the direction of the print when diagnosing a print quality issue.
3. References to the “Process” or the “Scan” direction refer to the direction in which the paper
travels through the printer.
Scan or Scanning is the direction in
which the LED or laser writes to the
photoconductor and is across the
paper path.
Process is the paper’s direction

Print Quality Rules of Thumb
If you encounter print quality problems, follow the tips below. Following these simple rules may solve the
problem easily and quickly.
1. Always run a new Menu Settings, Device Statistics or other printer “configuration page” showing
the:
-
Page Count – Is it time for a maintenance kit?
-
Supply Life – are any of the supplies low or exhausted?
-
Firmware/Code Levels – Are the code levels old/obsolete?
-
Media Settings – does the printer media settings match what is in the Trays?
2. Always check the Media Type, Size, Weight and Texture that is currently being used.
-
Is the media Type, Size, Weight and/or Texture within the printer’s manufacturing
specification?
-
Is the printer’s paper settings configured properly for the media that is used? You can
configure a media’s Type, Weight and Texture in the paper menu!
-
Are the printer and/or Driver set correctly for the paper type/size?
3. Always print the printer’s Self Test pages (Print Quality Pages or other self test pages).
-
How does the print vary from what is expected?
4. Try reseating the supplies.
-
Check for damage to the components as you reseat them.
5. For tricky problems, think about the Electrophotographic Process Steps. Eliminate the
components/areas that couldn’t cause the problem until you are finally left with what could.

Paper Transport Diagnostic Tips
Paper Rules of Thumb
Paper jams and feed problems occur for numerous reasons. Sometimes, failure of the equipment is the
cause or it can be the result of other external factors. Before replacing parts for a feed problem, ask
these questions:
•
Is the customer using a supported media type? This is a common problem. Check the
printer specifications in the Service Manual or User’s Guide if you are not sure.
•
Is the customer using a supported media size? Check the printer specifications in the
Service Manual or User’s Guide if you are not sure.
•
Is the customer using a supported media weight? This is a common problem. Check the
printer specifications in the Service Manual or User’s Guide if you are not sure.
•
Have you tried printing with a fresh ream of paper? Paper that is left out of the package
for periods of time can dry out or absorb moisture.
•
Have you tried printing from a different input source? This will help narrow down the
cause of some problems.
•
Is too much paper loaded in the Tray? Make sure the stack height does not exceed the
indicated maximum height.
•
Is the paper in the Tray wrinkled, creased, damp, or curled? Paper will not feed properly
if it is damaged. Try a fresh ream of paper.
•
Are different media types and/or weights loaded in the Tray (i.e. the customer has both
plain paper and cardstock loaded)? This will cause misfeeds.
•
Is the relative humidity too high? Too low? This can affect the media and/or printer and
its ability to feed properly. Check the printer specifications in the Service Manual or
Technical Reference Guide to see if it is located in an ambient environment.
•
Is the paper loaded properly in the Tray or option? This is a common problem.
Reposition the paper in the Tray or option to make sure that is loaded properly. The paper
guides should be flush against the media, but not too tight.
•
Are the feed rollers worn because it is time for a maintenance kit? Check the page
count of the printer to see if it is time for a maintenance kit to be installed.
•
Are there any obstructions in the paper path? If paper, staples, paper clips or other items
are in the printer, they can prevent the media from feeding properly.
Save yourself time and effort and always check these external influences before spending time
troubleshooting a supposed equipment failure.

Fax Print Quality Diagnostic Tips
Because a fax is composed of three main parts spanning two different machines, pinpointing a print
quality issue can be challenging. An important step in troubleshooting is to isolate the source of the print
quality problem by simple troubleshooting methods.
Below is a chart outlining the troubleshooting steps to determine if the sending fax, receiving fax or phone
line is the problem source. Please keep in mind that this chart only covers general print quality issues.
For more detailed information, it is recommended that you complete Lexmark’s online course called MFP

Problem Description:

Problems with print quality at the receiving fax, such as corrupt images, lines in the image,
top/bottom cut off.

When you test the Sending Fax by using the Copy function you can reproduce the print
quality problem.
Most Likely Cause:

Dirty flatbed or hardware failure in the scanner.
Resolution:
•
Clean the flatbed glass.
•
If the original document is being sent from the ADF, try printing a copy with the original
document placed on the flatbed glass. If this solves the problem, the problem is in the ADF.

Receiving Fax Machine at Fault

Check/setup the dial type, line type and reception mode.
•
If the phone line is part of a DSL connection, check to see if a Splitter (Line Filter) is installed
or replace the Splitter.
•
Disable Call Waiting if it enabled.
•
Check the telephone line for static or other noises.
•
Remove any electronic equipment (i.e. televisions, microwaves, etc.), motorized devices or
wireless/broadcasting equipment that may be located near the fax machine. Electrical
interference from the equipment may degrade the telephone line condition.

Printhead
The removal and replacement of the Printhead is not complex, however, the instructions are lengthy and
need to be followed closely. In addition, several tedious adjustments need to be completed after installing
the part.
The most common problems with this part replacement are caused by failure of the service technician to
follow the instructions. This may result in misalignment of the color planes when printing or wasted time
readjusting the Printhead.
The main steps involved in replacing the Printhead include:
•
Printhead Verification – a simple test to verify that the existing Printhead is, or is not at fault.
•
Removal and Installation – these steps are not complex, however, the directions should be
followed closely.
-
•
C73x, C74x Only – has a Printhead Adjustment Screw Cover located on the top cover of
the printer. It is notched to allow for removal. Be careful not to gouge or scratch the
printer when removing.
Printhead Alignment – this must be done to properly align the physical Printhead
placement, the Black plane and the Color planes for good print quality purposes.
-
Skew – the mechanical correction of the print head’s physical placement in the printer.
-
Registration – electronically aligns the Black Plane.
-
Alignment – electronically aligns the Color planes to the Black plane.
Color on Demand (COD) Assembly
The Color on Demand (COD) Assembly removal is a lengthy process involving disassembly of numerous
parts in the machine. In addition, the actuators and COD gear must be properly aligned on installation to
avoid errors or problems.

The ADF Motor Gear Train removal is not complex, however, the installation procedure is long and
detailed.

Electrophotographic (EP) Drive
The Electrophotographic (EP) Drive removal is complex requiring the technician to follow instructions very
closely. The EP drive assembly is identical for both the single function and multifunction printers with one
exception – the EP Drive comes with a Fuser Retract Link installed that is used in the single function
printers. If the EP drive is to be installed on a multifunction device, the Fuser Retract links need to be
switched from the old drive to the new.

Top Cover Camshaft
The Top Cover Camshaft removal is not complex, however, the installation procedure is detailed.

gear of the camshaft aligns with the first two gear teeth on the EP Drive actuator. Failure to align these
parts correctly may cause wasted time readjusting the parts.
Fuser Replacement
When a new fuser is installed, reset the fuser counter and run the Motor Calibration in the Configuration
Menu.
Reset Fuser Counter
This operation is performed to reset the Fuser life counter.
To reset the Fuser Counter:
•
Go to the Configuration Menu
•
Select Fuser Life Cnt.
•
Select Reset
Motor Calibration
This test is run to match the Fuser Motor speed to the Belt Motor speed whenever the Fuser is replaced.
To run the Motor Calibration:
•
Go to the Configuration Menu
•
Select Motor Calibration.
•
“Calibrating... “ is displayed and eight blank pages are printed.
Note: The Motor Calibration may also be performed in Diagnostic Mode. It is located within the Printer
Setup menu.

Transfer Module Reinstallation/Replacement
When reinstalling this part, there are two common mistakes made by technicians: 1) the printer is
powered on and may cause damage to the transfer module when the cable is plugged in and 2) the
technician forgets to plug the cable into the connector.
In addition, any time the Transfer module is removed or replaced, a Color Alignment must be performed
to maintain optimum print quality.
Note: This Color Alignment is very different from the Alignment performed when the Printhead is replaced
and should not be used for that purpose. The Color Alignment procedure executes a course adjustment
to the color planes whereas the Alignment procedure in Diagnostics is a fine adjustment.
To run the Color Alignment, do the following:
•
Select Color Alignment from the Configuration Menu.
•
Select Print Alignment.
•
Four pages print with charts and letters A–L.
•
Indicate the number of the 20 color lines closest to the black lines starting with set A.
•
Continue selecting the best lines each set and entering the value in the operator panel.
•
Touch Submit to save your changes.
Scanner MDC Card
ADF Scanner
Flatbed Scanner
If the Scanner MDC Card, ADF Scanner or Flatbed Scanner is replaced, the Scanner Manual
Registration procedure must be performed from the Configuration Menu. If this adjustment is not
completed, documents scanned from the device may look skewed or off-center.
Note: The Scanner MDC Card also contains Mirrored NVRAM and requires special handling if other
NVRAM components are to be replaced at the same time. See the section Mirrored NVRAM
Components on the following page for more information.

The components listed above contain system and secure settings which are critical to the operation of the
device. These settings are stored and mirrored in those parts to protect them in case they should ever
need replacement. To prevent loss of data or rendering the printer inoperable, follow the guidelines
below:
Warning! Observe all ESD precautions while handling electronic parts.
Warning! When replacing any of the NVRAM components listed above:
•
Only replace ONE component at a time – NEVER replace more than one NVRAM component
at the same time,
•
Perform a POR before replacing the second component. If this procedure is not followed,
the printer will be rendered inoperable,
•
These components mirror the critical NVRAM settings for the printer. If you have not already
done so, complete the online course Mirrored NVRAM from Lexmark’s online learning site to
learn more about NVRAM Mirroring.
Warning! If you must use one of the components listed above as a method of troubleshooting, boot
the printer into Diagnostic mode only. This will prevent the NVRAM from copying to the new
component. If the printer is allowed to boot normally, however, NVRAM will copy to the new component
and it cannot be used in another printer. It must be returned to the manufacturer.

Other Special Instructions
The instructions listed in this section may need to be performed under certain circumstances such as
repair, troubleshooting or other reasons.
Manually Unlocking the Front Door
The door locks during certain “Busy” events and unlocks when those events are complete. This is a
normal function. If, however, the printer is powered off or posts an error during the event where door is
locked, the printer can’t complete its event cycle. The front door, therefore, stays locked and will not open.
The instructions to manually unlock the front door are slightly different for the single function and
multifunction devices. Follow the guidelines located in Diagnostic Aids in the Service Manual.
Color Lock Out
This menu is located in Configuration Mode and should be enabled when printing for extended periods of
time with only black toner. This saves both the C., M, Y color toner cartridges and photoconductor units
from excessive wear. In the color toner cartridges and matching photoconductor units must be removed
from the printer. The default value is Off.
To access Color Lock Out:
•
Go To Configuration Menu
•
Select Color Lock Out
•
Select ON
•
Save your changes
•
Remove all color cartridges and color photoconductor units (cyan, yellow, and magenta).
Leave the black toner cartridge and photoconductor in the machine. Make sure to store the
supplies so the photoconductors are not exposed to light and the rollers on all
supplies are not damaged.
•
Turn the printer off, wait 15 seconds and turn back on.
Note: If the color supplies are left installed when the printer returns to the normal menus, the operator
panel displays "Remove All Color Supplies".
Note: If you turn Color Lock Out Off (the default mode) after it has been On and forget to reinstall the
color toners and photoconductors, at the next POR the printer will display "31 Missing or Defective
<color> Cartridge". Reinstall the color cartridges and color photoconductors.

Enforce Color Order
At times, it may be necessary to swap toner cartridges for troubleshooting purposes. Unless Enforce
Color Order is OFF, the printer will post an error message such as Defective or Missing <color>
Cartridge or 32 Unsupported <color> Cartridge. By default, the setting is ON.
When On (default) is selected, the printer monitors for the correct placement of the toner cartridges in
their slots. For instance, the Magenta toner cartridge must be in the Magenta slot or an error will occur.
When Off is selected, the printer does not monitor the placement, so no error message posts if a
cartridge is placed in its incorrect position.
To access Enforce Color Order:
•

Select Enforce Color Order
•
Select OFF
•
Save your changes
Disable Scanner
On an MFP printer, if the scanner stops working it can be disabled to allow the user to continue using the
printer portion of the MFP.
When accessing the Disable Scanner menu, you have three selections:
1. Disable - disables the entire scanner (both ADF and flatbed). Users attempting to use the
scanner function receive a "Scanner disabled by administrator" message.
2. ADF Disabled - disables only the ADF so the flatbed continues to function. Users attempting to
use the ADF will receive an "Automatic document feeder disabled by
administrator" message and the paper present sensor in the ADF reports empty.
3. Enabled - Default setting. The entire scanner (ADF and Flatbed) are enabled.
Note: Auto Disabled may appear in response to certain scanner operation failures and indicates
the scanner is already disabled. This is not a valid selection and appears only for informational
purposes.
To access Disable Scanner:

•
Save your changes

Cleaning the MFP Document Glass – X73x, X74x
It is important to clean the MFP on a regular basis (about once a month depending on usage) to keep it
functioning properly. You should also clean the scanner glass if you encounter print quality problems
such as streaks on copied or scanned images.
Note: Clean both areas of the scanner glass and both white underside areas.
Warning! Always turn the printer OFF and unplug it before cleaning.
Slightly dampen a soft, lint-free cloth or paper towel with water. Do not use any kind of cleaning agent to
clean the glass.
•
Do not spray liquid on the glass.
•
Wipe the scanner glass until it is clean and dry.
•
Wipe the white underside of the scanner cover until it is clean and dry.

Security Reset Jumper
The C73x/X73x and C74x/X74x printers have a Security Reset Jumper on the System Board which can
be used in the event the Administrator password is forgotten (see pictures below). The Security Jumper
effect can be configured through the Security Menu on printer’s web page or menus. The choices for the
Security Reset Jumper effect are listed below:
•
No Security (default setting) – Resets the value of each Access Control to “No Security”.
This option preserves all custom security templates and building blocks, however, they will no
longer be applied to a function. This option allows the Administrator to create a new
password with no loss to some customizations.
•
Reset to Defaults – Erases all Security Templates, Building Blocks, Access Controls and
passwords that a user has defined and returns the printer security to its original state. This
option is not recommended unless a complete reset of the Security Menu is desired.
•
No Effect – The position of the security jumper is ignored. No settings will be erased or
changed in any way. This option is NOT recommended because passwords cannot be
recovered easily; it would require System Board replacement at the cost of the customer (this
is not a manufacturing or warranty problem).
Note: Administrators can discourage tampering with the Security Jumper by securing the entire RIP card
cage with a Kensington lock
In general, when a jumper is installed over two or more jumper
pins, this causes an electrical connection to be made. A predefined
set of instructions is programmed on the circuit board which
executes depending on the jumper configuration detected.

The movement of the jumper from position A to position B (or position B to position A) triggers
the reset, NOT the specific positions. This differs from a CMOS reset on a computer.
When the printer is powered on, it labels the current position of the plastic jumper (let’s say position A) as
the “home” position. If, at the next POR, the printer detects that the jumper has moved from its previous
“home” position (position A) to the “other” position (position B), then it executes the desired effect (as
configured in the Security Settings). After performing the reset, the device labels the new position
(position B) as the “home” position. See the pictures below.
Scenario 1:
Position “A”
(Home)
The printer powers up with the jumper in
this position.
Position “B”
(New Home)
The jumper is changed to this position and then
powered on. The printer recognizes the change and
executes the configured Security Reset effect.
Scenario 2:
Position “B”
(Home)
The printer powers up with the jumper in
this position.
Position “A”
(New Home)
The jumper is changed to this position and then
powered on. The printer recognizes the change and
executes the configured Security Reset effect.
To perform a Security Jumper Reset operation, do the following:
•
Power the printer off,
•
Remove the Kensington lock from the card cage (if installed),
•
Remove the small plastic jumper that covers a pair of the jumper’s pins,
•
Replace the plastic jumper so that it covers the pins adjacent to its original position,
•
Replace and secure the Kensington lock on the card cage (if installed),
•
Power the printer on.
