Greetings, Calafia!
September was a challenging month for us in
Calafia. As always, we, as a Barony, rose up to meet
these challenges and prevailed! Crown was a
wonderful event, despite a last minute site
change. The sponsored lunch was a
huge hit and all of the Barony
came to help when called.
Thanks to all who
helped out with
either Crown on
Saturday or
Privy Council
on Sunday, as
well as a special thank you
to THL Magge
Rose, THL Seraphina Lilje, and
Lord Christoffer
Decshel for all of
their last minute reorganization work. It was
truly a team effort to produce
such a beautiful event (So many
banners!) despite these roadblocks. Thank you,
Calafia. Finally, Congratulations to HRH Agrippa and
Bridget!
and visit our growing Equestrian community as they
complete for the Baronial equestrian champion title
Join us at Tumbleweed Center for a fun filled day of
horses, pageantry and exciting games…not to mention an always wonderful lunch.
Of course, October is always an active month in the
Barony. First off, we have Great Western
War! Please come and visit the Baronial
encampment, even if you camp elsewhere. Come by
and share your stories and your joy with your fellow
Calafians. There will be some group activities such as
a Hawaiian tunic party on Friday, great Calafian
potluck and game night on Sunday, and several
Baronial volunteer shifts throughout the weekend. If
you haven't had a chance to do so yet, please sign up
for a shift and wear your Calafian colors to show the
rest of the kingdom how much time we really do put
in at GWW.
The other challenge we still face is the problem of a
new practice space. We were informed that we can no
longer use City of La Mesa parks, including
Briarcrest. We have attempted negotiations, but to no
avail. We are once more looking for a practice site. If
you missed last month’s Council, we had a very
productive discussion including great brainstorming
and lots of options. Currently, we can continue to use
Briarcrest until the end of October, giving us time to
find a new site. Know that this is a huge priority for
many of us and it is actively being worked on. If you
have any questions or park suggestions, please contact
THL Seraphina using the email listed on the
website. Thank you for your understanding and
patience.
All this means that Calafia
Anniversary is just around
the corner. Fighters and
Archers, make ready
to compete for the
championship!
Remember that
we ask you to
enter only one
list during the
day in order to
get through the
lists in the limited
amount of daylight
we have. This year, we
are doing something different. Rather than have a feast
following Anniversary, we are extending Winter Arts to celebrate Yule and Arts
together. Join us for a day of song, of beautiful displays, of wondrous food and holiday cheer with your
chosen SCA family.
The following weekend, on Oct 15th, we celebrate
everything Viking and Celtic with our Leif Erickson
tourney. Join us for a hopefully a cool weekend by the
sea at UCSD Stonehenge with brand new ice floes
made by Drafn. Last but certainly not least, come out
In service to Calafia,

start? Want to know more about the
different kinds of martial arts practiced
in the SCA but not sure whom to ask?
Looking for information on our various
Guild meetings? Need loaner garb for an
upcoming event? I can help!
The Baronial Household is for everyone, whether
you’re an SCA Newcomer, visitor, or transplant.
If you have questions, I can get you answers.

me at the Newcomers Pavilion at our next event.
Yours in service,
All are welcome at the monthly Baronial
Household meetings. Except for the
month of December, these meetings
are not in garb/costume. There is a
specific topic each month, which is
listed at the top of the Guild Activities
section.
Baronial Household meetings are held the
first Wednesday of the month from 7:00 PM to 8:30
PM at the Allied Gardens Recreation Center, 5155

With the arrival of Autumn comes a great many
events and opportunities to get out and see new things
in the Barony! For October, the Newcomers’ Household
will be dark, but there are plenty of other events perfect
for meeting new friends and trying new things.
As for events, at the beginning of October for those
willing to make the trek out to Taft, Great Western War
is taking place, and it promises to be an amazing event
full of arts, fighting, and fun! If you can’t make it out,
though, don’t worry! We also have our own Leif Erickson
Tournament on October 15, followed by the Calafia
Equestrian Championship on October 22.
As always, newcomers are welcome to visit
Newcomer’s Point with any questions they may have at
events, or you can feel free to contact the Chatelaine vie
email at [email protected]. Hope to see you at an
event soon!

Join us! No prior singing experience or skill is
required; just bring yourself, your enthusiasm,
maybe a friend, and a desire to lift your voice
in harmonious song to honor your Barony!
In general, we meet the second and fourth
Thursdays of each month; please join us at
either or both of our monthly rehearsals! Our
August rehearsal dates are August 11th and
25th; rehearsal begins at 7:00 PM.
Rehearsals are held at the Boeing Company
Office at Liberty Station in Point Loma (2488
Historic Decatur Rd, Suite #160, San Diego
92106). Parking is available on the street or in
marked Visitor spaces in the lot opposite the
building.
We also invite you to join our Facebook
Group, the “Calafian Choral Fellowship”
to stay informed and up-to-date about
practices, music, and performances.
For more information about the group or
any questions, please send an email to
[email protected]. We look forward to
singing with you!
Greetings Calafia! Do you like to throw pointy
things at other things? Do you think you might
like to try throwing pointy things at other
things? If you answered “yes” to either of these
questions, then I have good news for you!
Calafia is beginning to develop an active
throwing community, and we are inviting you to
attend our inaugural practice on Sunday,
October 30.
The only equipment you need to bring is a
pair of closed-toe shoes and the ability to listen
to the Marshal to avoid being the thing that the
pointy things are being thrown at. All ages are
welcome, but minors must be accompanied by a
parent or legal guardian and must demonstrate
the ability to throw weapons safely.
If you’re interested in attending, please email
me at [email protected] for more
information.
Yours in service,
Mikhail Liutognev
Thrown Weapons Marshal

Commentary and Announcements
Baronial Officers Reports
Commentary from the Baron and Baroness:
Arts and Sciences (THL Euginia in rauða):
In August, A&S attended Leodamus of Thebes
Tournament and the Baronial Populace Meeting. Lady
Grainne and THL Euginia hosted A&S Point at Leodamus,
where we had a Greek Pot Paint and Take with several
Tourney-goers participating. There were some really
great artists, and it was a fun activity.
Important Session! - it’s Ross’s Birthday! (Birthday
song was sung). Cupcakes are in Ross’s honor!
It’s been a tough week in the Barony for a variety of
reasons; thank you all for your patience and kindness
and understanding. Kingdom has been nothing but
glowing about our handling of this thanks to Maggie and
Seraphina. It’s been very stressful and hopefully that
hasn’t leaked out to anyone...
Chatelaine (Lady Isolde de Fetherstan):
Thora, Eleanora, and Isolde attended the Leodamus of
Thebes Tournament this past month. There were a good
number of newcomers (in the dozens!) , and several
borrowed garb for the day.
Ten packets have been sent out since our last report.
We’ve got a number of small projects to support
Chatelaine and Gold Key efforts, and we will be
undertaking them in the coming months: Thora is
donating a clothing rack, making us some newcomers
tabards, and getting us some belts made, as well as
making a tablecloth “sign” to go over the Chatelaine
table. We’ll also be working to get new business cards
ordered, along with printing off flyers to hand out and
obtaining sturdier hangers that can hold garb without it
slipping off onto the floor.
• Deputy of Baronial Household (Mistress Fia
Naheed) – The September meeting of the Baronial
Household was Wednesday September 7 at Allied
Gardens Rec Center. There were 14 attendees, a
couple of them very new. The Ladies Sárán and
Ariana gave lots of information on Heraldry in
Courts and how Court functions
There will be no Baronial Household meeting in
October as the first Wednesday is the first day of
Great Western War. We will resume in November.
• Deputy for Demos (open position) - No report.
We are looking for people to help with setup since the
sun sets so early at the new Crown site. Please let us
know if you can help people set up after you are set up,
or helping to serve lunch, cut things – if you can help
with that it is a longer commitment but please let us
know. We’ll come back to the Crown stuff later, but
thank you all.
We wanted to thank Cassandra and Kyra for their
great work on Leodamus and for everyone that went up
to Angels! Also, after Anniversary we have a little event
called Great Western War – Baronial camp is open to
everyone so please drop in and say hello! The weekend
after GWW we have Leif Erickson; I promise it’s a mad
dog tourney this year – I made sure (YAY ICE FLOES).
Sorry for how hectic things have been, and thank you
all for your help!
Commentary from the Seneschal (THL Seraphina Lilje):
Thank you to the officers and members of the
populace who attended the meeting last week. We
discussed what it means to be an officer, how the officer
positions are filled, and small discussions about the
duties of specific officers. Next officers meeting is
Tuesday, December 6, where we will meet with the new
officers.
We will begin the bidding process for Potrero War
now – please come talk to Their Excellencies or myself if
you are interested in running War for May 2017! Bids
will close November 1st.
Chronicler (THL Dagný Starkaðardóttir):
THL Dagný is happy to announce that she has a
Deputy! THL Margaret Kerne will be taking over as
Chronicler at Calafia Anniversary in November.
We have a lot of business to get to – we ask that
reports stay as short as possible so we can move on to
Officer nominations and polling, and then we will
discuss the perks.
Constable (Lord Juger Knot):
Leodamus was attended by two deputies, Ben
Postaval and Ambrise Wylde.

well as Leodamus.
Ebhlenn coordinated with Drafn to make a work
party, and Calafia now has an entire new set of ice
floes for Leif Erickson. We can replace old ones one
at a time as they break down, so these should last
quite a while! Special thanks to Asa Askmath,
Thorsteinn Arngeirsson, and Balduin de Holte for for
giving up their day to create ice floes, and a very
special thanks to Ebhlenn an Ucaire for coordinating
the work party and making it happen!

Council Minutes, cont.
Leif Erickson:
Upcoming Events
The Event Steward ntoes that Leif Erickson is coming
up on October 15 at UCSD. We’ll have lots of Viking fun,
including ice floes and a bridge battle for the fighters, a
make-a-helm activity, and a Dramatic Death Contest for
the kids (who also get to play on the ice floes). A&S is
planning to do whipcord braiding, and we’ll have a
wonderful donation lunch by two of our own Viking
ladies. It will be a fun day. See you all there!
Crown Tournament:
• The park will refund us for rooms in 30 days; they
feel terrible about the misunderstanding over the
stakes. Field use permit can be used another time in
the next year.
• The question of whether this means we won’t be
able to hold Arts in the Park here in future was
asked. The short answer: possibly – we’re looking
into things. THL Sakan (Rec Center Rep) noted that
we will send letters well in advance so they can
clear in advance. She will pursue this.
• We could use popup weights, but this would have
been very expensive for this particular event.
• THL Magge reiterated that we will be moving the
event to El Monte Park and asked Lord Juger
(Constable) to bring blue sashes. Juger noted that
they will definitely be there. She also reviewed the
list of groups that have stepped up to offer financial
support for an all-event luncheon and solicited
additional donations.
• The site will be opening at 8:00 AM; Opening and
Closing Court will be in the ramada. Adelicia will
have the site layout. We are not booking anyone
eric-side along the fence, so those spots will be
available on a first-come, first served basis.
• There is no in-and-out policy in place with regard to
parking. Depending on which ranger is in charge
they may be able to accommodate that, but
probably not.
• Hospitallers are doing a bake sale of breakfast items.
Magge noted that there may not be coffee, though,
since that was not discussed. Her Excellency stepped
up and offered to bring coffee for the setup crew.
• Lunch will be sandwiches. We can get 425 sandwich
wedges and a bunch of other side things. Lunch will
be included with the site fee. For those who do not
wish to eat the lunch provided, small propane
burners are allowed in the park – grills only, please,
no fire pits. No charcoal barbeques, only propane.
• Privy Council on Sunday will still be at Allied
Gardens, as will Iron Brigade practice. It will start at
noon, in the same area as Arts in the Park. After
that, we are not certain where October Brigade
practice will be happening, but we will be here on
Sunday.
Old Business
None.
New Business
Chatelaine Point:
Chatelaine Point needs upgrades! We want to make it
look nicer, and get some more garb and such to help
make sure we have something for everyone. Eilidh
motioned $500 for the project. Several people
seconded. Passes to a unanimous vote.
Officer Nominations and Polling:
New officers for November were announced. Thank
you all for your participation! If there’s a job you want
to do which was not on that list, come talk to us about
it.
Discussion Items
Briercrest Park:
Several weeks ago one of our Marshals received a
letter from the City of La Mesa. This letter cited a city
ordinance that does not allow weapons in city parks.
During discussions with the Community Services
Manager we learned that it was something that had
only recently been brought to their attention. They
originally gave us until the end of September and with
some follow-up they have extended that to the end of
October to give us time to find a new location. We did
ask if they needed any more information about us, our
safety practices, or our insurance in order to change the
decision, but we were told that nothing would change
their mind. With the help of Their Excellencies, the
Marshals, and former Seneschal Reina, the information
from several years ago was reviewed and some new
locations are being considered. We’ll let them report on
the status of their findings, and then we will open up the
floor to new location ideas and discussion.
18
Council Minutes, cont.
Discussion Items, cont.
Discussion Items, cont.
Briercrest Park, cont.:
Seraphina will reach out next week to Allied Gardens
to negotiate for park use for practices again. There is
highly likely a major cost associated with this, and we
will need to discuss funds next month when we have a
better idea of how much we are talking about. Rec
Center Rep suggests we get a special use permit for a
year so we can lower this fee significantly if we use it
outside normal operating hours.
El Cajon has previously been ruled out because they
have similar wording in their ordinances. I’ll be talking to
their parks manager next week. We’ll also follow up
with our contacts at County Parks.
Elks Lodge in El Cajon is an option perhaps? Would
Elks Lodge have a problem with people bringing lights?
Elks Lodge is interested in a crossover event.
Tiberius has been very helpful in talking with the City
staff at La Mesa. He let us know that he’d love to return
to Allied Gardens and would support a fundraiser to
help offset the costs of doing that. Suggestions included
a pancake breakfast and sales of T-shirts, hats, etc.. He
also suggested we discuss with them our involvement in
their community events to offset some costs.
Reina noted that Lemon Grove has some suitable
parks, but there are two issues: first, during winter parks
close at 7:00 PM. They also have verbiage about some
of the weapons we might use. And sandbags? County
parks five miles south might be worth looking into if
they do not close at dusk. They’ve been helpful, so they
might be good to work with!
Avenel said that Santee is not opposed to what we do,
but a lot of their parks aren’t very useful. The big parks
have great lighting on sports fields but none in other
places. Big Rock Park is a possibility; it is open until 9:00
PM, has nice bathrooms and large green space, but the
lighting is a little problematic. The grass itself is not well
lit. There’s some light but not great. It would be great
for Sunday practices, but not for night practices.
What is it we’re looking for? Per Lord Valrik:
1. Lighting
2. Parking
3. 6:00 PM - 10:00 PM (or at least 7:00 PM to 9:00
PM on Tuesday, Wednesday, or Thursday
weeknights.
4. Sunday availability from noon to 3:00 PM.
Briercrest Park, cont.:
5. Need around 8,000 square feet of area to fight.
Nothing smaller than Briercrest.
6. Max 40 people for Wednesday night practices,
20 for Sunday practices.
7. For Brigade practices we need approximately
8,000 square feet from noon to 3:00 PM, and
about 80 people.
8. Bathrooms are required.
9. Ease of freeway access would be nice.
Lord Darius asked what are the geographical
boundaries for the area we’re considering. The
geographical region would be Central Calafia, no further
north than Mira Mesa, no further west than I-805, no
further east than I-15, and no further south than SR-94.
Other options – Eilidh: Liberty Station; private schools.
Cassandra: churches, San Diego Catholic schools. Reina:
fencing schools (specifically Team Touche and
Lionheart). Brianna: the YMCA (Summergates holds one
of their practices there). Arianne noted that several
“Y’s” don’t have their own fields; they just near city
parks. Liam: UCSD. Muirenn noted that UCSD has paid
parking on weekdays and it’s very expensive – though
on the weekend it’s free. Darius added that the soccer
fields at UCSD are unavailable on evenings and Sundays.
Cassandra: Croc Center. Caprea: WhU, USD, Mission
Trails, etc. Eilidh: industrial parks with grassy areas
Valrik said that Iron Brigade wants to help, and that if
we’re going to have to pay for space they would really
like to use Allied Gardens again., noting that turf isn’t
nearly as important as parking and lighting. One option
would be to bring our own lighting if it’s allowed.
Seraphina noted that she doesn’t mind helping with
the legwork and asked people to email her to let her
know what they’re looking at. She urged people to ask
the questions we’ve been discussing but please to turn
them over to her when they’re ready to talk to the
Barony’s legal head.
Finally, Muirreann asked anyone with park
suggestions to email them to [email protected]. She
added that we can continue this discussion at October
Council, but we need to wrap it up now as we’re
running out of time. She thanked everyone for their
“out of the box” thinking and all the suggestions.
