Roy was raised on a family cotton farm in Arkansas. “He created a host of entrepreneurial successes, and Paschal Winery is a beloved project where he can be in touch with his agricultural spirit and love of the land,” said Tasting Room manager Agnieszka Stachurska. “After the success of the vineyard, the winery and tasting room followed naturally on site.” The tasting room, located at 1122 Suncrest Rd in Talent, is now open daily from 11am to 6pm, pouring seven to eight varietals of wine made from locally-grown grapes. The vineyard site is planted with pinot gris, viognier, pinot noir and merlot. “We are known for our unconventional red blends,” Agnieszka said. “Our goal is to offer a community space for musicians, local artists and to support non-profit organizations in their endeavors as well.” Paschal hosts weekly music concerts, as well as a Sunday Serenade Happy Hour from 4 to 6pm with live music, no cover charge and discounted wines by the glass. “For many years we have cultivated a close relationship PRSRT STD U.S. POSTºAGE PAID PERMIT #351 MEDFORD, OR ECRWSS Win dinner for 2 at Capers! with the Siskiyou Jazz Institute and the Classical Guitar Society, who bring acts to Paschal from all over the world,” Agnieszka said. “We are also introducing Swing Dance Events every 2nd Saturday of the month.” Their warm and welcoming Tuscan-style tasting room is also ideal for private events and weddings. “We have had a wonderful welcome back,” Agnieszka said. “We look forward to reconnecting with all of our customers who love this place as much as we do!” Paschal is located at 1122 Suncrest Rd in Talent. Having a passion to learn body and paint work, I interned at a local body shop for one year while in high school, and was then hired out of high school doing bodywork at the shop. Then hired on with Star Body Works in Talent. While there, I was helping in the paint shop mostly but going back and forth from paint to body. I then transferred to the Medford location working in the Detrim Department disassembling cars, and estimating. For the last two years I transferred into the office being a full time estimator. I have been employed with Star Body Works for 5 years. I met my high school sweet heart, Cassie Jennings, when I was 15 years old. After finishing up high school we got married when I was 20. Since then we have three beautiful children, Rylee - 5 years old, Kyler - 4 years old and 2 year old Peyton. Business Grapevine Oh’s Osaka Japanese Cuisine Friends and family of Mr. Oh, owner of Oh’s Osaka, located at 123 S. Front Street in downtown Medford, always knew how talented he was in the kitchen. And luckily for Medford residents, in 1995, after working in a Japanese restaurant for over 15 year, Mr. Oh decided to open his own restaurant. Mr. Oh and his wife, Seong, moved to the Rogue Valley from Seoul, South Korea in 1981. Today the couple operate the family restaurant in a 6000-square foot building with a charming an exotic atmosphere. The interior is equipped with a waterfall, an aquarium and several teppanyaki tables, which in essence are large iron griddles at which the chef prepares your meal table-side. “Enjoy a spectacular show as your own chef, with flashing knives, slices and prepares an array of sizzling steaks, seafood and poultry before your eyes,” Seong explains. “With our teppanyaki, dinner includes your choice of salad or miso soup, vegetables and rice along with one of our twenty exciting entrees— each prepared, cooked, cut into bite sized pieces and served before your eyes at the teppanyaki tables by our Osaka chef.” In addition to the teppanyaki dinners, Oh’s Osaka offers a variety of sushi items such as Nigiri Sushi, Maki Sushi, and a great selection of Hand Rolls. “Our experienced chefs will prepare for you large portions of quality, delicious food for you to share with all family members,” Seong said. Their full bar gives customers plenty of choices from beers to wines and mixed drinks. Their signature drink, the Osaka Bomb—a 42-ounce concoction with eight different spirits and two types of juices—is big enough to share between two people and is a great way to start an evening. Oh’s Osaka is located at 123 S. Front Street in downtown Medford. BLBR: What is your business and how long have you been doing it? Justin Carson: Jackson County Physical Therapy provides outpatient services in four clinics in Southern Oregon (Medford, Ashland, Eagle Point, Phoenix). We first opened in Medford and Ashland, over 17 years ago with six partners including current partner Tim Palmesano, PT. The other current partner, Justin Carson, PT, joined in 2004. There are now 16 physical therapists among the four clinics, with specialties in treating spine, shoulder, sports and work injuries, post- operative rehabilitation, motor vehicle accidents, TMJ, women’s health, headaches, as well as offering Pilates and more. BLBR: What inspired you to get into this line of work? Justin Carson: Being able to treat people without drugs or surgery makes physical therapy special. Doing hands on work, combined with teaching what to do at home with self care, education, and exercises is exciting to us. BLBR: What does local mean to you? Justin Carson: Local mean locally owned and operated, independent, not part of a franchise, corporation, large health system, or national chain. This sets JCPT apart. BLBR: What do you do to Buy Local – Buy Rogue? We support other Buy Local — Buy Rogue members, from vendors, to supplies, to support services such as printing and advertising. BLBR: What are you doing to move towards environmental sustainability? Justin Carson: We buy recycled paper products, energy-efficient appliances for our heating and cooling. We have set up recycling systems for our materials within the clinics and diligently use programmable thermostats, green cleaning products and low energy lighting. We are currently looking into commercial solar systems for our roofs. We have a JCPT “Green Team” that reviews and improves our procedures to further sustainability. BLBR: How does your business give back to the community? Justin Carson: JCPT team members volunteer at many community events, providing education, expertise, consultations. We support many local groups with donations/sponsorships. We provide a certain amount of probono care. During our annual holiday toy drive for “Lightly Loved Toys,” we collected over 700 toys in 2011 and over 500 in 2012. BLBR: Tell us something about your business that most people don’t know. Justin Carson: Our treatment model is hands-on. You will receive one-on-one, 45 minute appointments with your own physical therapist. No aides or assistants are used. We also have private treatment rooms. This unique model of care sets us apart, and helped us to be voted Oregon Healthy Living readers’ Favorite Physical Therapy Clinic each year, and a Top 100 Company in Oregon (#4 in 2013 for Small Company Category). International shipping now available Tiff’s Hallmark Shop Unique Gifts, Collectibles & Home Decor “So much more than a Hallmark store” Common Sense Gaming The System by John Statler A person with authority, money, business skills and integrity would first consider how to make the greater economy grow so that their profits resulted in the community benefiting from their organizational skills. Unfortunately, many such people with those powers, particularly those lacking in integrity, are much more inclined to find ways to game the system. Trading profits are up but small business lending is down. Banks seem to be primarily in the business of trading stocks and have recently been caught manipulating markets. Once upon a time, they were in the business of lending. Lending can be a significant boost to the small and new businesses that create jobs, but there is easier profit from trading bizarre instruments created to manipulate markets and hide bad investments. Finance as a whole is disconnected from the real economy. The real economy creates wealth by adding value to products and goods, while the current financial economy creates wealth by manipulating prices and imaginary stocks. Very few of us like to be regulated. Most of us would prefer that any laws would only benefit and protect us, while avoiding any restrictions on our personal lives. And that would be fine, except there are people in our communities who would enslave us to benefit themselves, and they do not want regulations. The power of today’s corporations is immense. Corporations spend hundreds of millions of dollars to bypass regulations intended to prevent abuse of fair market practices. According to a recent article by the New York Times, banks like Morgan Stanley and Goldman Sachs have been caught hoarding and slowing the supply of raw materials. They have done it with aluminum, driving up prices on an international scale. It was purely a profit-making scheme that resulted in higher prices for businesses and consumers. Some of the best minds on Wall Street, in the banks, and running ma- jor corporations are still spending the majority of their creative time gaming the system rather than building it up. As long as they get huge bonuses even if they bring corporations to failure, they will continue to do this kind of dishonest work. We have to find a way to change the mindset so corporations cannot avoid regulations that protect our communities. We can create rules and laws that create obstacles to corporations, but as long as executives at the top gain extraordinary wealth and personal benefit when they are the cause of a business collapsing, then we are at a distinct disadvantage. Perhaps they need to experience deep public shame when their practices bring economic failure. Perhaps they need to experience high public recognition when their practices truly build our communities. Whatever happens, it is time for change. Our neighbors who are Democrats or Republicans, who are liberals or conservatives, and who support the Tea Party or Occupy Wall Street … none of them are the cause of our current economic problems. The corporate culture allows huge bonuses for failure. Shame on them and praise to those who build our communities. John Statler is the owner of Computer Services Northwest, is a former member of the Medford City Council, and sits on several non-profit boards and commissions in Jackson County. Shortly after World War II, in the midst of the devastation brought by the war, Loris Malaguzzi, a young teacher and the founder of this unique system, joined forces with the parents of this region to provide childcare for young children. Inspired by the need for women to return to the workforce, this education system has developed over the last 50 years into a unique program that has caught the attention of early childhood educators worldwide. Emergent Curriculum The Reggio Approach uses an emergent curriculum -- building upon the interests of the children. The environment and provocations are based upon the interests of the classroom community (children, families and teachers) and are an intentional balance of childgenerated ideas and teacher guidance. Through careful observation and documentation, teachers are able to present children with provocations and then provide materials and purposeful questions to help children continue their investigations and explorations. The Environment is the “Third Teacher” The schools in Reggio Emilia place much emphasis on the aesthetics of their environments and the materials offered to children. The environment plays an integral role in inviting the children to ask questions and delve into deeper study. Teachers are very intentional about the materials that they bring into the classroom and they carefully organize spaces. Documentation of the work of the children and the reflections of the teachers are displayed in the classrooms and throughout the school with the intention of making learning visible. Around Town August 2013 — The Sneak Preview — Page 13 NEW PATIENT SPECIAL WITH DR. TAYLOR! A Rockhound’s Dream Vacation by Meesha Blair Ask anyone to describe their dream vacation, and you will hear a lot about sandy beaches and umbrella drinks. But not if you ask a rockhound... Scott Blair recently had the opportunity to participate in what he, a lifetime rock enthusiast, would dub a Dream Vacation: a seven day rockhounding ramble through Eastern Oregon. Scott joined up with friends from WA state, meeting them at Glass Buttes, 77 miles East of Bend, OR. This area offers a variety of obsidian types, including rainbow, gold and silver-sheen, and Midnight Lace. “We decided to check out the Midnight Lace area, first,” Scott explains, “A series of pits that rockhounds have dug for years that boast an obsidian with whimsical patterns of black, alternating with clear, flows of volcanic glass.” The area is prolific! “There’s much more obsidian than dirt there,” Scott says, “So the practice becomes one of picking only the nicest pieces - with the sought after banding.” The next day, Scott moved over to the Aurora Borealis pit, to look for the beautiful, multi-color-banded rainbow obsidian. After clearing out about 6’ of dirt that had backfilled into the pit, he hit the jackpot, coming up with several large boulders of the material, some weighing as much as 30-40 pounds. “Each time I thought I was done, another boulder poked its nose out of the dirt,” Scott recounts. “I sheared off a chunk from one of the boulders, and - sure enough - it was rich with the lovely pastel colors of rainbow obsidian... and even the small pieces can have surprising color zones.” Exhilarated from their success, the group headed out to a well known collecting site in the drainage of Stinking Water Creek, near Juntura. Here, they hunted white plume agate, named for the distinctive feathery patterns of bright white agate flowing through darker agate matrix. And they hit it lucky again! Scott’s uncanny intuition for where to dig helped him out: “After only about 20 minutes out, for some reason, I used my rock pick to pull at one small piece of agate, among Dr. George Lam Dr. Ben Taylor 1430 E. It didn’t move, and I realized I had something big.” At first, he can’t tell how big. He keeps digging. And digging. “I get the rock out all the way, and it’s pushing 100 pounds,” Scott says, smiling. He describes it as “just ripped with beautiful white plume.” The group went on to hunt for pink plume agate, Picture Jasper, petrified wood, and Owyhee Jasper. Not every day was a success; the group got skunked a couple times. Yet they stick with it. “Half of rockhounding is figuring out where things aren’t!” Scott laughs. But they are lucky more than not, and the weather (persistent rain for the first four days) clears, too. “A rockhound longs only for the bright sky, the yielding earth, and the clang of steel!” Scott declares. “Ok, maybe a little Taco Bell thrown in, too,” he admits. Stand Up Paddleboarding: The world’s fastest growing water sport finds its footing in the Rogue Valley by Nathaniel Hayden In a world dominated by sitting down, motionlessly hooked to a screen just two feet in front of you for hours upon hours, you can easily see why the opposite of that has become one the fastest growing sports in the world: Stand Up Paddleboarding (SUP). It’s not a difficult concept to grasp: you are on a board … that you paddle … while standing. If you have been to any of the area’s mountain lakes this summer, you have no doubt seen handfuls of cruising SUPers. It’s become so popular that a group of local business owners have joined forces and organized the area’s first annual “Paddlefest 2013” to take place on August 24 at Howard Prairie Lake. This free event will offer clinics, fun races and games from 10am to 4pm at the Resort on the beach next to the marina. What’s the big deal? And just why is this sport becoming so popular? According to Jamie Bill, owner of North West SUP & Surf Shop in Ashland who has been SUPing since 2008, and a Paddle Fit Certified instructor since 2010, it’s in part because it reconnects us to some ancient wisdom. “The Native Americans used to stand in their canoes to get extra leverage,” Jamie explained. “We were meant to stand, this is the way our bodies were designed, that is why so many people are finding the transition into the sport to be very natural.” Another reason Jamie pointed out is because of its ease and versatility. While more challenging than other paddle sports such as kayaking or canoeing, a beginner can feel at ease on an SUP in just a short afternoon on a calm lake. And it’s just plain fun. “People have a natural attraction to the water as a place for fun and relaxation,” Jamie said. “SUP is a great way for anyone to have access to that on a daily basis, no matter where they are. SUP can basically be whatever you want it to be: a quiet relaxing paddle at sunset, a family adventure, an epic surf session (in the ocean), or an extremely challenging white water run (on a river).” Yes, you read that correctly. The more adventurous SUPers have taken the sport to floating white water rivers such as the Rogue. That is the versatility of SUPing that Jamie mentioned—these boards can appeal to a family looking for a leisurely outdoor activity, all the way to the adrenaline junkies at the other end of the spectrum. Jamie grew up chasing hurricane waves on a surfboard in New England. “When SUP came onto the scene, I was looking for something to keep me in top physical condition and get me out on the water during the rest of the year when the swells are infrequent,” Jamie said. “As I became acquainted with the sport, the versatility of being able to surf, race, and run whitewater quickly captivated my attention.” “The Hollow Woodie” For Randy Bogardus, Rogue Valley resident and owner and creator of Clearwood Paddleboards, his passion for SUPs began in 2007 in New Zealand. “I was surfing Shipwreck Bay (‘shippies’) and saw an SUP out catching tons of waves,” Randy said. “At the time I was surf kayaking and bodyboarding due to a bad shoulder. So when I saw the SUP I thought it would be a way to ride ‘standup’ even with my bum shoulder. After I got home from the trip it took me about a year to actually dive into SUPing.” According to Randy, SUP has grown in popularity for several reasons: “The gear is simple and easy to handle on and off the water, a board and a paddle are all that is needed for a fun outing, and the cost to buy into the activity 836 East Main St. #1 • Medford • 773-9324 Schedule online at: www.balanced-massage.com Henry’s Foreign Auto Service & Sales Inc. SUP is just a really fun way to get on the water.” After his New Zealand trip, Randy decided to build himself a hollow wood SUP. “I built the first ‘hollow woodie’ in 2009, and have built seven boards since that time,” Randy explained. He now runs Clearwood Paddleboards out of his shop in the Applegate. “Hollow wood boards have become a niche for ‘garage’ builders, mostly of surf style boards, over the course of the last ten years or so, but no one to my knowledge had designed a hollow wood racing style board in decades.” Randy’s knowledge of wood boat building and his interest in surfing led him to the idea of designing boards for other folks who share his passion for SUPs and enjoy building things. “With the help of several friends that understand the digital world better than I, we have created cnc cut out framing kits for our surf style SUP and flatwater boards that can be built in half of a two car garage.” They machine the parts here in the Rogue Valley and can mail them almost anywhere in the world. They have been selling these kits through a third party website and are nearly ready to roll out their own e-commerce website. SUP Culture Showcased at Paddlefest 2013 “The basic idea behind Paddlefest is a chance for the paddling community to come together on the same lake on the same day,” explained Scott Keith, owner of Northwest Outdoor Store in Medford. “Kayakers, canoes and SUP’s all are invited. For over 15 years I have been selling kayaks and SUPs and always thought it would be fun to have a social gathering of the many paddlers in the region. A chance to socialize and network with other like-minded folk and a chance to meet other paddlers in a common setting.” Paddlefest promoter and co-creator Susan Huntley agrees. “I really enjoy organizing events that bring people together who wouldn’t normally run into each other,” Susan said. “If you are not a ‘club’ person, you find people with common interests by just getting out there. These connections can turn into lifelong relationships that revolve around nature and the outdoors.” At the event there will be free demo kayaks and SUP’s for people to try out, as well as a Paddling Skills Clinic with Randy and Jamie. “If someone has an interest in paddle sports they can get a really great look at most of the available options for getting on the water in a human powered craft,” Randy said. The focus for the technique clinics/ demonstrations will be to introduce novice paddlers to the proper SUP stroke technique. They will break the stroke down into its basic components and provide some on the water coaching. “What I have found in teaching others to paddle SUPs is that it is important to get started correctly so that a paddler doesn’t have to break bad habit to progress,” Randy said. Jamie plans to educate folks about the culture of SUP, the boards themselves and why they are shaped as they are. They will also cover turning and some more advanced balance drills and paddling techniques. At the event there will also be kayak fishing clinics (please call Northwest Outdoor store to sign up), kid games, a paddling Poker Run, and races. Also on hand will be members of the US Coast Guard Auxiliary Flotilla 59 from Grants Pass, who will be giving out information geared specifically to paddle craft, including laws concerning life vests and regulations regarding their use in or on paddle craft. “My hope is as many people as possible who already own kayaks or canoes or SUP’s can attend,” Scott said. “And from this gathering many connections will be made and the paddling community will grow.” “People are so stuck inside these days and way too plugged into technology,” Susan said. “We need to as a community encourage and inspire people to get out there.” Paddlefest 2013 will take place August 24 from 10am to 4pm at the Howard Prairie Lake Resort.
