The art collective defined the visual identity of the UKʼs free rave movement in the late 80s and early 90s. Joeʼs since become a pillar of Britainʼs alternative arts establishment. He stole the show at the Paralympics Closing Ceremony, and during the Rolling stonesʼ Glastonbury performance, with his instantly recognisable “upcycled” creations made from reclaimed industrial and domestic components. He mostly works using discarded metal salvage, breathing new life into the detritus of consumer culture and creating treasure from trash. While Joe is known for large-scale animated sculptures and adapted one-off vehicles, While the Iron is Hot showcases three-dimensional pieces that can be enjoyed as artistic jewels. “Iʼm actually making things people can live with, with high-quality finishes,” says Joe, “Mutoid Waste sculptures are transitional in the sense theyʼre about the process, and living in a state of change. But for the exhibition Iʼm trying to build pieces that people can have around them for generations.” The sculptures include The Home Guard Series of sentry figures resembling post-apocalyptic knights in armour. Other pieces are based on deep-sea divers and dogs. “I like to discover the characters within the objects and draw them out,” he explains. “Thereʼs often a relationship between the original purpose of the object Iʼm “upcycling” and nature, as the device was made to do a job initially done by an animal. Thereʼs a school of assembled object artists who just bring items together. I try and make them look like theyʼre meant to be together.” Joeʼs salvage skills – “Iʼm a scavenger by nature – I must be fairly magnetic,” he says – extend from gathering recognisable everyday items to sourcing extremely unusual components: “The sculptures have a creative life of their own as a result, some take years to build and theyʼre almost impossible to reproduce. The art form is how to get them to stay together naturally and appear dynamic. Different substances are especially challenging – you canʼt weld aluminium to steel, for example.” Perhaps the most stimulating aspect, though, of Joeʼs work is the animistic personality the individual viewer projects onto each sculpture. “Many of the pieces feature the characters interacting. Some people see them as confronting each other, others as displaying affection.” The audience adds its own narrative to each vignette.
