Meet the Head Coach
Head Coach Bob Walsh
Bob Walsh begins his sixth season as Rhode Island College's head men’s basketball coach. He has presided
over one of the most successful periods in the program's storied history as RIC has made five consecutive trips
to the postseason and four straight appearances in the NCAA Tournament. Walsh has led RIC to the Sweet
16 twice and the Elite Eight once.
He owns a 114-35 (.765) record and has won three Little East Conference Regular Season and three
Tournament Championships.
In 2009-10, Rhode Island College posted a 12-2 record
in the Little East Conference, capturing the program’s fourth
regular season championship in the past six years (2009, ’07,
’05). After a first-round bye, Rhode Island College defeated
UMass Dartmouth (74-72) on Feb. 26 and then defeated Western Connecticut (81-80)
on Feb. 27 to win the Little East Tournament title for the third time in the last four years
(2008, ’07).
In 2008-09, RIC went 23-6 and posted a 13-1 mark in the Little East Conference,
establishing a new program record for league wins in a season en route to the
Anchormen's third Regular Season Championship in the past five seasons. Rhode Island
College, which advanced to the NCAA Tournament for the third straight campaign, was
selected as a four-team host site for the second time in three years.
In 2007-08, the Anchormen posted a 23-7 overall record and an 11-3 (second place)
mark in the Little East Conference. Rhode Island College won the LEC Tournament title
and advanced to the NCAA Tournament for the second consecutive season where RIC
won its first round contest.
In 2006-07, Walsh led Rhode Island College to a 27-4 overall record, establishing the best season in school history for wins. The Anchormen went 12-2 (first place)
in the Little East Conference, capturing the program's first-ever LEC Regular Season
Championship. The Anchormen hosted the Little East Tournament for the first time in program history, going undefeated with a 3-0
mark to win the tourney title and advance to the NCAA Tournament. RIC advanced to the Sweet 16 and then to the Elite 8 where the
Anchormen lost to the eventual National Champion (Amherst). It was the program's first appearance in the NCAAs in 28 years.
Walsh led the Anchormen to a 19-10 overall record and a 9-5 (third place)
finish in the Little East Conference during his first season at the helm in 2005-06.
He led RIC back to the Championship Game of the 2006 Eastern College Athletic
Conference (ECAC) New England Men's Basketball Championship for the second
consecutive season where the Anchormen hosted the title contest for the first time
in school history.
Walsh, 38, spent seven seasons as an assistant coach with the Providence
College basketball program prior to coming to RIC.
The hard-working assistant joined Head Coach Tim Welsh's staff in 1998
after spending the 1997-98 campaign as an assistant coach at the University of San
Diego.
At San Diego, Walsh's duties included developing an individual workout
system, working with the team's guards and post players, scouting upcoming opponents and coordinating the school's off-season improvement program.
Walsh got his start in college coaching when he served as an administrative
assistant on Welsh's staff at Iona from 1994-1996 while working on his Master's
Degree in Mass Communications and Public Relations.
In two seasons at Iona, the New York native organized office recruiting, coordinated scouting, handled the team's travel and directed the Gaels' study hall and
academic improvement programs. Prior to joining the staff at Iona, Walsh served
as a student assistant coach at his alma mater, Hamilton College. A 1994 graduate,
Walsh has a bachelor of arts degree in sociology.
Walsh is single and resides in Pawtucket, Rhode Island.

Meet the Assistant Coaches
Assistant Coach Chris Burns
Chris Burns begins his first season as an assistant men's basketball coach at Rhode Island College. He assists Head Coach
Bob Walsh in all facets of the Anchorman basketball program
including recruiting, scouting, administering practices and game
coaching.
Burns began coaching last season as an assistant for the
Manchester Millrats of the semi-professional Premier Basketball
League (PBL). He joined the coaching staff in Manchester after
spending the two preceding seasons in uniform as a player.
“I am very excited to join the men's basketball program here at Rhode Island College,”
Burns said. “Coach Walsh has created an outstanding culture of success and I look forward
to helping build on that.”
Burns enjoyed a decorated playing career in the
high school and collegiate ranks, headlined by his lead
role in nearby Bryant University’s run to the 2005
Div. II National Championship Game. Although Bryant finished its record-setting 25-9
season in defeat, Burns was named Chevrolet Player of the Game for scoring 24 points
and handing out six assists on a nationally televised, network broadcast of the final game.
Burns enjoyed career-long success with the Bulldogs, winning over 90 games as a four-year
letterwinner and three-year starter.
A native of Merrimack, N.H., Burns first gained notoriety in basketball at Merrimack
High School. There, Burns earned honors as Player of the Year and Mr. Basketball for
the state of New Hampshire. Burns is not new to the city of Providence, however, having walked on to the 2002-03 team at Providence College, for which Bob Walsh was an
assistant coach.
He earned a bachelor's degree in marketing from Bryant in 2007. Burns is single and
resides in Providence.

Meet the Assistant Coaches
Assistant Coach James Sorrentine
James Sorrentine begins his first season as an assistant men's basketball coach at Rhode Island College. He assists Head Coach Bob Walsh
in all facets of the Anchorman basketball program including recruiting,
scouting, administering practices and game coaching.
Sorrentine joins the Anchormen bench after spending the last two
seasons as an assistant with his alma mater, St. Michael’s College in
Colchester, Vt. In those two seasons, Sorrentine developed a solid background in both recruiting and scouting, which will serve him well on the
Rhode Island College staff.
“I am very excited and thankful to be joining the
Rhode Island College men’s basketball program and to have
an opportunity to learn from a great coach in Bob Walsh,”
Sorrentine said. “It is a dream come true to coach in my
home state where my passion for the game of basketball
started.”
Sorrentine enjoyed a successful collegiate playing career
at the Div. II level. His accomplishments live on in the St.
Michael’s record books, where Sorrentine has the most career
three-pointers (340) and scored 1,433 career points. Sorrentine was a team captain in his senior
season and was also named to the All-Rookie Team for the Northeast 10 Conference in 2005.
For Sorrentine, the job at Rhode Island College brings him close to home. Sorrentine is a
2004 graduate of St. Raphael’s Academy in Pawtucket, where he also enjoyed a flourishing basketball career playing for his father (Tom Saar Sorrentine). While in high school, Sorrentine was a
USA Today/McDonald’s All-American honorable mention, an Academic All-State selection, and
Second-Team All-State in Rhode Island in 2004. Both James and brother T.J. are now college
basketball coaches in Providence, with the latter serving as an assistant on the men’s basketball
staff at Brown.
He is a 2008 graduate of St. Michael's, earning a bachelor's degree in economics. He is single
and resides in Rumford, Rhode Island.
