Make a Birchbark

Don’t be one of the millions who regret never writing that book.
A collection of different containers
and Christmas ornaments will be
displayed. Instructor: Bill White. $16
Student materials needed:
Small needle-nose pliers.
• Mon, Nov 24, 6-8pm, HMS Rm 20

For most of us, the prospect of sitting
down and writing the great American
novel is a daunting task that we are too
overwhelmed to take on. If you’ve sat in
front of an empty computer screen and
said, “I can’t do this,” this class is for you.
In four weeks we will have our books
started!
Week 1:Where do I start?
Week 2:- Understanding characters and building the structure
Week 3: Working with structure and building story
Week 4: Let the writing begin!

Bridges to Kindergarten
November: Raising a Reader
Raising a Reader, the second session of the Bridges to Kindergarten series, will be offered
in November.
This special event is designed to help parents understand the important pre-reading and
writing skills their child can learn to prepare them for kindergarten in the fall of 2015.
Parents and their preschooler will take part in learning activities centered on reading.
Early Childhood
This is a great opportunity for the children to become familiar with the kindergarten
classroom, and early childhood teachers will be available to answer questions about
early literacy and readiness. Parents will also receive a handout of fun activities to do at
home to get their child ready to read and write.
“Raising a Reader” will be offered at Hermantown Elementary on Thursday, November
20 from 6-7:30 pm. All families with a child entering kindergarten in 2015 are
encouraged to participate.
Cost of this event is $5 per preschooler, although no one will be denied participation due
to the inability to pay. Families currently enrolled in the School Readiness or Head Start
Programs need not pay for their preschooler as the fee is included with their tuition.
Limited sibling care is also available for $5 per child, with sign-ups due by November 12.
Registration forms will be mailed with the November Getting School Ready (GSR)
newsletter. For more information, or to be added to the GSR mailing list, please call 6284958 ext #1.
January: Math — It’s more than counting
The third session of the Bridges to Kindergarten series will be offered in January and will
help parents and their four- and five-year-olds learn fun and creative ways to sharpen
math skills through games, art, music, and movement.
The children will have a chance to become comfortable with the kindergarten
classroom, and early childhood teachers will be available to answer questions. They will
also provide fun and practical ideas that parents can use at home to continue math skill
development.
“Math—It’s More Than Counting” will be offered at Hermantown Elementary
on Thursday, January 15 from 6-7:30 p.m. All families with a child entering
kindergarten in 2015 are encouraged to participate.

It’s check-in time for children 3 to 4 years old
Early Childhood Screening (ECS) appointments are now being scheduled for children
in the Proctor and Hermantown School Districts.
During this important appointment, trained professionals check vision, hearing,
height and weight, and social/emotional development. Through games and activities,
licensed early childhood teachers also check large and small motor skills, concepts,
and speech.
ECS identifies, at an early age, possible health or learning concerns that should
be addressed in the two years before starting school. It also offers parents an
opportunity to ask questions and gather information to help their child be prepared
for kindergarten.
14
Screening is offered free of charge, by appointment only, and just twice a year—in
October and February. The ideal time for ECS is between a child’s third and fourth
birthdays. Families with a child who is at least 3-years old are asked to call the Early
Childhood office at 628-4958 by January 22 to schedule this important appointment.

Construction underway at elementary school
A groundbreaking celebration
in early October kicked
off the construction start
for improvements to the
Hermantown Elementary
School. A large crowd picked up
shovels to mark the beginning
of the approximately $9 million
project.
In the next few weeks,
construction workers will be
digging the foundation for the
six new classrooms on the west
side of the building. As the
project continues, work will
progress with construction of
the new school gymnasium, one
additional classroom and an
addition to the kitchen.
Two ponds are being dug this
fall, one in front of the building
and one on the southeast corner,
to collect and retain stormwater
and sediments from the school’s
parking lots.
Next summer, substantial
interior remodeling will be
done to the school, including
converting six classrooms
into three new kindergarten
rooms, updating the kitchen
and installing a new mechanical
system throughout the facility.
Construction will be ongoing
throughout the school year, with
project completion expected by
the opening of school in the fall
of 2015.
Planning and design work is
continuing on Hermantown High
School. That project will convert
the current high school to a
middle school, and design and
build a new high school as an
addition to that facility.
Construction on the high school
project will begin in the spring of
2015 and completion is expected
The construction trailer at the school is a sign of things to come. in the fall of 2016.
