It’s check-in time for children 3 to 4 years old Early Childhood Screening (ECS) appointments are now being scheduled for children in the Proctor and Hermantown School Districts. During this important appointment, trained professionals check vision, hearing, height and weight, and social/emotional development. Through games and activities, licensed early childhood teachers also check large and small motor skills, concepts, and speech. ECS identifies, at an early age, possible health or learning concerns that should be addressed in the two years before starting school. It also offers parents an opportunity to ask questions and gather information to help their child be prepared for kindergarten. 14 Screening is offered free of charge, by appointment only, and just twice a year—in October and February. The ideal time for ECS is between a child’s third and fourth birthdays. Families with a child who is at least 3-years old are asked to call the Early Childhood office at 628-4958 by January 22 to schedule this important appointment. US Postage PAID DULUTH, MN Permit #1943 Construction underway at elementary school A groundbreaking celebration in early October kicked off the construction start for improvements to the Hermantown Elementary School. A large crowd picked up shovels to mark the beginning of the approximately $9 million project. In the next few weeks, construction workers will be digging the foundation for the six new classrooms on the west side of the building. As the project continues, work will progress with construction of the new school gymnasium, one additional classroom and an addition to the kitchen. Two ponds are being dug this fall, one in front of the building and one on the southeast corner, to collect and retain stormwater and sediments from the school’s parking lots. Next summer, substantial interior remodeling will be done to the school, including converting six classrooms into three new kindergarten rooms, updating the kitchen and installing a new mechanical system throughout the facility. Construction will be ongoing throughout the school year, with project completion expected by the opening of school in the fall of 2015. Planning and design work is continuing on Hermantown High School. That project will convert the current high school to a middle school, and design and build a new high school as an addition to that facility. Construction on the high school project will begin in the spring of 2015 and completion is expected The construction trailer at the school is a sign of things to come. in the fall of 2016.
