Honorary Degree Citation
The Honorable Dannel P. Malloy
Governor of Connecticut
Mary Ellen Murphy, RSM, ’50, Ph.D.
Governor Dannel Malloy, your background
is evidence that with stalwart personal
determination and the steadfast support
of a loving family, anything is possible
– including serving in our state’s highest
elected office. A Connecticut son and the
youngest of eight children, you grew up
in Stamford and struggled at an early age
with learning and physical disabilities. With
unwavering perseverance, you mastered the
skills and strategies needed to overcome
these challenges, graduating magna cum
laude from Boston College and continuing
on to Boston College Law School.
Your professional talents have consistently
centered on public service and civic
engagement. As an assistant district
attorney in Brooklyn, N.Y. you won
22 convictions in 23 felony cases. Upon
returning home to Stamford, you served on
the boards of finance and education prior to
running for mayor – where you were elected
in a landslide victory in 1995. Holding that
office for 14 years, you were Stamford’s
longest serving mayor. During your
administration, you brought 5,000 new
jobs to the city, led the fight for affordable
housing, and reduced the crime rate by 60
percent. Your leadership and commitment
to the city’s economic, cultural, and
environmental transformation garnered
national attention, resulting in Stamford
being named one of the country’s top ten
most livable cities according to Forbes
magazine.
Now as the 88th Governor of Connecticut,
you are working to pursue similar priorities
for the entire state: advocating for economic
development strategies that will attract
4
employers and foster job growth; and
proposing strategies to close the educational
achievement gap in public schools to
make Connecticut a national model of
academic excellence for all. Recognizing
the importance of a strong educational
foundation for our youngest students, in
February you announced a $12 million
proposal to increase access to preschool
programs; fittingly, you chose our very
own School for Young Children, one of
the oldest preschools in the country, as the
backdrop for that announcement.
After taking the oath of office as governor
in January of 2011, you spoke in your
inaugural remarks with great admiration for
your mother and the values she imparted.
You said: “She focused her children on
the importance of character, hard work,
dedication, and love of family. And she
repeatedly challenged us to leave the world
a better place for having been here.” These
sentiments are reflected in Saint Joseph
College’s mission and core values which
were established by the founding Sisters of
Mercy nearly 80 years ago and continue to
guide our College community today. An
integral aspect of a Saint Joseph College
education is a strong commitment to
serving others and changing the world for
the better. Governor Malloy, in recognition of your
distinguished contributions to public
policy, dedicated service to the citizens of
Connecticut, and the inspiring example you
offer to all, Saint Joseph College proudly
presents to you the degree of Doctor of
Humane Letters, honoris causa.
As an educator, scientist, scholar, and
mentor, your life’s work has served as a
shining example that holding ever true to
one’s values and principles can cultivate
trailblazing pathways of discovery,
leadership, and success. You have said:
“In the 1940s, math and science were for
men. But I always expected to be a chemist,
and my years at Saint Joseph College just
confirmed my ambition. No one ever told
me I couldn’t do it. So I did.”
Indeed, your scholarship and scientific
research at the University of California in
San Diego and the University of Arizona
included the analysis of moon rocks
brought back from the Apollo 11 lunar
mission in 1969. As a feature writer at the
Hartford Courant described it, “Many
a woman has been promised the moon,
but Sister Mary Ellen Murphy is the first
woman to actually get a piece of it!” You
continued your interest in space research as
a NASA consultant for the Viking Lander
on Mars and as a member of NASA’s Near
Earth Asteroid Rendezvous team in your
role as a visiting scientist in the Laboratory
of Extraterrestrial Physics, Astrochemistry
Branch, at Goddard Space Flight Center.
Known as a gifted educator and generous
mentor, you began your teaching career at
Cathedral High School and soon thereafter,
joined Saint Joseph College’s department
of Chemistry. After earning your Ph.D. at
Fordham University in 1965, you advanced
at this institution from assistant professor
to full professor of Chemistry and served
as chair of the Chemistry department
for two terms. As an educator, your
contributions to the College are significant:
teaching undergraduate and graduate
courses in general chemistry, chemical
instrumentation, organic geochemistry,
environmental science, environmental
chemistry, and developing and teaching an
online graduate course in environmental
geochemistry. You have participated on a
variety of College committees, including
a year as chairperson of the faculty.
Additionally, the College has benefitted
from your counsel and expertise through
your extensive and dedicated service on the
Board of Trustees as an officer, committee
chair, member of the executive committee,
and now as Trustee Emerita.
In addition to your efforts on behalf
of this institution, you spent 15 years
in educational administration as vice
president for academic affairs and dean at
Saint Joseph’s College of Maine. You have
presented the results of your investigations
at numerous geochemistry societies and
lectured on space research to civic, scientific
and educational groups throughout the
United States and Canada. You hold two
patents and have authored numerous
peer-reviewed journal articles in high
profile chemistry publications. In 1975 you
were awarded an honorary degree from
the University of Hartford and received
a Distinguished Alumnae Award from
Saint Joseph College that same year. Your
friend and colleague, Professor Emeritus of
Chemistry Dr. Harold McKone, has aptly
praised you as “a Woman for All Seasons.”
Sister Mary Ellen Murphy – you are
a woman of pioneering vision, grace,
integrity, exceptional talent and reputation.
Your alma mater takes great pride in your
service and accomplishments, honoring you
today with the degree of Doctor of Humane
Letters, honoris causa.

Saint Joseph College students graduating
with academic honors are awarded goldcolored honor cords, which they wear at the
Commencement ceremony. Undergraduate
academic honors printed in this program
are based on final grade point averages.
Summa cum laude is awarded to those
with a grade point average of 3.9 or higher,
magna cum laude to those whose grade
point average is 3.8 or higher, and cum
laude to those whose grade point average is
3.7 or higher.
Student members of other Saint Joseph
College honor societies may be wearing
cords of different colors.
Honor Societies
Members in good standing of Beta Beta
Beta National Biological Honors Society
earn the right to wear honor cords at
graduation by excelling in academics,
scholarly research and community service.
The red and green cords are the colors of
the Society. The red signifies Zoology and
the green represents Botany. Additionally,
members earn the right to wear medallions
by demonstrating outstanding performance
in these areas.
The listing of degree candidates in this program is based upon PRELIMINARY information provided by
the Office of the Registrar at the time of publication. The official conferral of degrees/certificates occurs upon
satisfactory completion of all academic and financial requirements. Publication in this Commencement program
does not determine degree eligibility or represent official listing of degree recipients.

Members in good standing of Kappa Delta
Pi, the Education Honors Society, are
admitted based on a G.P.A. of 3.75 for
undergraduate students, 3.95 for graduate
students. The green and purple cords
are the colors of the Society. The green
represents friendship, which is exemplified
in the fellowship the Society offers.
Purple signifies royalty, a sense of culture,
learning, and the rights and responsibilities
of command and authority.
Members in good standing of Psi Chi, the
National Honor Society of Psychology,
earn the right to wear honor cords at
graduation by excelling in scholarship
(particularly in Psychology), being ethically
and socially responsible, and advancing the
science of Psychology. The blue and gold
cords are the colors of the Society.
Members in good standing of Sigma
Beta Delta International Honor
Society in Business, Management, and
Administration wear green and gold
honor cords, signifying the core values of
wisdom, honor, and pursuit of meaningful
aspirations. Members keep true to the goals
of scholarship and service to humankind.
Honor Medals
Honor Medals are worn by students
graduating from the College “in Honors”
—that is, having completed all the
requirements of the Saint Joseph College
Honors program. Requirements include
four general Honors courses, an Honors
interdisciplinary capstone course, and
a junior-year independent learning
project consisting of one of the following
possibilities: independent research, service
learning, or a study abroad project.
Additionally, Honors students must
maintain a G.P.A. of 3.25 or greater. The
brass medal is embossed with the Saint
Joseph College seal and suspended from a
blue ribbon.

The Shield
The shield of Saint Joseph College
combines the insignia of the
Sisters of Mercy, the Cross and
Crown, with the Coat of Arms
of Saint Joseph. The Coat of
Arms, according to the medieval
heralds, consisted of a blue field,
upon which lay a silver carpenter’s
square, that overlays three silver lilies.
The carpenter’s square symbolizes Saint
Joseph’s occupation and is also a symbol
of accuracy and truth. The lilies symbolize
integrity and indicate that Saint Joseph was
the earthly spouse of the Blessed Virgin
Mary, whose purity is represented by the
chaste white lily. Three flowers are used
to represent the Blessed Trinity. However,
Academic Regalia
in the College shield, the center
flower is replaced by the cross
which, combined with the crown,
represents the Sisters of Mercy
under whose sponsorship Saint
Joseph College was founded and
continues to flourish.
A gift from the Saint Joseph
College Alumnae/i Association in 1984,
the Presidential Medal depicts the College
shield and is cast in gold. The chain which
supports the medal was crafted by Mr. John
Cavanaugh of Matunuck, Rhode Island, in
celebration of the College’s
60th anniversary.
The Mace
The mace is carried in the academic
procession preceding the president. The
mace derives from the medieval period
when it was a formidable weapon used to
protect the person of a dignitary taking
office or opening court. From the 16th
century in England, and since the colonial
period in America, the mace has become a
symbol of office carried by a distinguished
member of the procession.
indicate universality. Below is a sphere.
The sphere is a “perfect” geometric figure
and is used here to signify integrity. Seven
bands compose the sphere and are signs
of the three theological virtues—faith,
hope, and charity—and the four moral
virtues—prudence, temperance, justice, and
fortitude. These virtues are of the essence
of integrity. Within the sphere is a quartz
crystal seen as multiple facets of the whole
piece. The crystal signifies the search for
truth as presented to us in facets or aspects
of Total Truth. The virtues listed above
find their expression in service symbolized
by the band of hands around a disc element
that serves to support the sphere. The mace
is marked by seals of the College and the
State of Connecticut.
The Saint Joseph College mace was crafted
by Mr. John Cavanaugh of Matunuck,
Rhode Island, in commemoration of the
College’s 60th anniversary. The design of
the mace is derived from the educational
goals of the College: to assist the students
in developing intellectual curiosity, a sense
of integrity, and a commitment to service.
The mace is 36 inches long and weighs eight
pounds. It is made of sterling silver, entirely
hand wrought. The nodes are ebony. The
cross is coated with 24K gold.
A mace is a symbol of authority. Since
all authority has God as its source, the
cross is the top element and is made with
four arms and is mounted on an orb to

Stylized academic costume is a notable
feature of formal functions at colleges
and universities throughout the world.
The custom of wearing distinctive regalia
for academic ceremonies goes back to
the Middle Ages, when people dressed in
keeping with their social class: nobility,
clergy, and common folk. Since there
was an intimate relationship between the
early universities and the church, the garb
adopted for scholars was similar to that of
the clergy. In addition, the costume also
served a practical purpose: heavy gown,
hoods, and caps were essential for the
scholars who lived, studied, and taught in
unheated buildings.
The bachelor’s gown is without ornament
and has long, pointed sleeves; the master’s
gown is similar but has longer sleeves. The
doctor’s gown has full-length lapels of
velvet and three velvet bars on the sleeves.
The greatest degree of symbolism is shown
by the hood. The bachelor’s hood is three
feet long, the master’s three and a half. The
doctor’s hood is four feet long and has wide
side panels. The lining of the hood is silk in
the colors of the institution conferring the
degree. The hood’s velvet border indicates
the major field of study, according to the
following tradition:
Agriculture—Maize
Arts, Letters & Humanities—White
Accountancy, Business—Drab
Dentistry—Lilac
Economics—Copper
Education—Light Blue
Engineering—Orange
Fine Arts—Brown
Forestry—Russet
Home Economics—Maroon

Veterinary—Science Gray
Although the wearing of academic regalia at
colleges in this country may date from the
founding of Harvard in 1636, the practice
did not become standard until the 19th
century, when more and more graduates
of American institutions continued their
studies at German universities. The blaze
of color in the European hoods and gowns
at the 500th anniversary of the University
of Heidelberg in 1886, as well as the 250th
anniversary of Harvard in the same
year, aroused much interest and comment.
The basic design of academic costume in
the United States was first established in
1895, when leading
colleges adopted a set of standards.
Basically, there are two kinds of cap tassels
and three types of gowns and
hoods. The “Oxford cap” or
“mortarboard,” made of serge, broadcloth,
or durable paper, is worn for most degrees;
the tassel that hangs down on the left side
is black for bachelors and master’s degrees
and gold for doctoral degrees.
