One World Trade Center, or
the Freedom Tower in Manhattan, New York, Is open
for business! It was built by
and owned primarily by the
Port Authority of New York
and New Jersey,
One World Trade
Center

The building has 104 floors
and it is 1,776 to the top.
The number 1776 represents
the year that American declared independence from
England.
One World Trade Center is
the main building of the New
World Trade Center Complex. Construction started
April 27, 2006 and quickly
became the tallest structure

in New York City. It is now
the tallest skyscraper in the
Western Hemisphere.
At the time of the official
opening in November, over
55% of the office space was
leased out to different businesses and agencies. Below
the street level there are
parking garages, access to
the subway and PATH
trains as well as shops and
other services for commuters.

First Energy STEM Grant Awarded
The parent company of
First Energy, locally JCPL,
awarded a STEM grant to
special needs teacher
Christine Giordano in
November.
Kieran Tintle, area manager for JCPL, came to
Thorne to present Ms.
Giordano with the check.
Mr. Olausen and Mr.
Smith were also in attendance and were very happy
to have this type of economic help awarded to
the school.
First Energy proudly supports
classroom projects and teacher
professional development initiatives that focus on science, technology, math and engineering
(STEM). They provide grants up
to $500 in communities that are
served by First Energy facilities.
Ms. Giordano wrote the
grant to buy equipment that
will challenge her students to
learn about how structures
around the world are built.
Different kits will also be
purchased for the students to
experiment with, to determine what is the best way to
build long and tall structures
that will withstand different
forces in nature.

The Giver Book and Movie Review

The Giver by Lois Lowry, is dystopian future
type book where everything is perfect. No
pain, no war, no fear, no love, no colors, and
no choices. They have to share their dreams
in the morning and their feelings at night.
They have to apply for marriage and kids.
Jonas (the main character), Fiona, Asher, and
all of the other 11s are becoming 12s. There
are no separate birthdays, there are only age
groups and every age group becomes a year
older in December. When you turn 12, that
is when you get your job assignment. There
are jobs such as birthmother (the lowest),
instructor of an age group, Assistant Director of Recreation (Asher’s job) and Caretaker of the Old (Fiona’s job). As they went
down the line giving out the jobs, they
skipped Jonas. They came back to him at the
end, and the job he receives is the receiver of
memories. Now The Giver shows Jonas life
before The Community.
MOVIE:
The movie is the same as the book with just
some minor Hollywood movie magic. The
start are Brenton Thwaites (Jonas), Jeff Bridges (The Giver), Meryl Streep (Chief Elder),
Odeya Rush (Fiona), and Cameron Monaghan
(Asher).
Overall the book and movie were fantastic. I
recommend it to all. Book and movie both
deserve a rating of 5 out of 5 stars.

New Computer Schedule

Students were surveyed
about the new computer
schedule that has been implemented this year. Out of 36
seventh and eighth graders
who were asked, only 9 students said they prefer the
new schedule with 27 saying
they liked the old schedule
better. The new computer
schedule is that you have the class one day
every week as compared to the old schedule where you have computers every day
for a marking period.
The people who prefer the new schedule
were mostly the boys who like physical
activity. The people who prefer the old
schedule are mostly girls, or students who
prefer technology and books, to tedious
runs.
Although the gym teachers try to make

gym as interesting and fun as they
can, with football, badminton, volleyball and lacrosse for the 8th
grade, there is only so much they
can do. When asked, an 8th grade
boy said “I prefer the old computer schedule because this year students will need more time to
practice typing, especially with the
test this year being the PARCC,
which requires typing with speed
and accuracy for essays.” Many of the students asked said they need more intensive
typing practice.

#Manicure Monday Right?

Squeaky Clean
As we kickoff a new school
year, more and more girls
at Thorne and everywhere
else will start painting their
nails; twice as much as over
the summer. Although the
nice deep autumn reds and
pretty purple hues might be
alluring, you may want to
either think twice about
those dark colors. The
dark pigments (the colors)
in dark shades of nail polish
can permanently damage
and stain your nails leaving
a yellow stain. To avoid
this try using a white base
color or a clear growth
stimulating base coat from
NYC Polish or Jordana.
Another commonly made
mistake is the classic paint
and peel; as in you peel off
your nail polish because
either a) you nail polish
remover does not make it
come off or 2) it is a habit.
If you paint and peel, STOP!
When you peel off your
polish you are also peeling
off layers of your nail that
keep them strong and
smooth. If you peel your
polish, you nails will eventually become dry, cracked
and peel. Make sure you
are using an acetone based
nail polish remover and if
you peel because your
polish chips, try investing in
a good quality top coat,
Avon, Jordana and Sally
Hansen are recommended. You may also want to
skip the gel and acrylic
nails as they can also damage your nails.
Seasonal Nail Trends
This fall sparkles and glitter seem to be trending.
Fun patterns like polka
dots and stripes like chevrons seem to be in and
hombre and gradient are
also fun and beautiful designs. Another cute trick
is to color your nails, wait
until dry and then use
ultra fine line sharpies to
make your designs. Finally
seal with a trusty topcoat.
Interesting Country of the Season is... Canada

We picked Canada for the
interesting country of the
season because, Canada is
a great place to visit in the
fall and it is very close to
home! In the fall it is very
nice to see the leaves
changing on the trees. The
cool temperatures are
great for outdoor activities
such as hiking, biking, fishing along with other activities. Canada is the second
largest country in the
world in total land area,
but only 35,540,419 people
live there! It is a considered a developed country
and one of the wealthiest
in the world. In some
parts of Canada, people
speak French and in other
parts of the country, people speak English. There

I-Phone 6
The I-Phone 6, the newest
Apple product has finally
been released. The IPhone 6 has a 4.7 inch
screen and weight only
4.55 oz. It has an 8 megapixel HD camera with slowmotion and elapsed time videos. It also has IOS 8 and 3G
internet. You can get the
internet on the Iphone6 anywhere. This phone also
comes with fitness apps built
into it. Although there were
a few bugs that needed to be
worked out when first released, it still was
backordered with dates of
delivery into November.
Apple stated that the I-phone
6 was a huge payoff for them
and they are back to making
money to fund new products.
The phone comes in silver,
gold or grey. A sixth grader
commented on his new
phone saying “it has the fastest internet of any phone I
have ever had. I love it. I
don’t want any other phone.”

On every Halloween night kids
are on the streets covered in
costumes, collecting candy,
scaring little children and telling
ghost stories. What better
night to tell stories that will
give your listeners chills up
their spines?! Where did these
stories come from and how did
they start? Well, myths actually
started as real life stories that
were retold through the ages.
Many think that the ancient
people created myths to explain how and why things they
did not understand could happen. They explained their stories of gods and goddesses, and
other supernatural beings. Every part of the world, all ancient
people created myths.

Thanksgiving is celebrated by many
Americans, but many people forget
how Thanksgiving even started. In
1621, the Pilgrims traveled on the
Mayflower to America. When they
got to America, they had their first
successful harvest. To give thanks
to God for their successful harvest,
the Plymouth colony and the Wamconsisting of turkey, stuffed birds, deer,
panoag Indians celebrated the first
Thanksgiving. They ate a big dinner eels and shellfish.

until 1863. Abraham Lincoln declared

Thanksgiving to give thanks for what
they have.
Six Flags Fright Fest

Come visit Six Flags, Great Adventure in Jackson, New Jersey
for an epic combination of thrills
and chills! This is the 23rd year at
the worlds largest scream park
where millions of people love to
spend their day. The Fright Fest
features: terror Trails, haunted
mazes, nearly two hundred zombies, and Halloween-themed
shows and attractions. Millions of
people enjoy the Fright Fest because it is fun.
The start of Fright Fest started
after Six Flags tested Halloweenbased events through the 1970s at
some of its parks. In 1989, Fright Fest
was born at Six Flags over Texas and
expanded to all of its parks soon after.
Some of the events were a trick-or
treat trail for kids, haunted house and
more. What if you don’t want to get
scared? Well, that is an easy question!
The Fright Fest also features “NonScare Zones” where actors are not
permitted to scare their guests,
providing a “safe” area for families and
young children who do not want to be
scared. Also, hay mazes and pumpkin
painting will be held for the younger
children or guests. There are also
“Scare Zones”, for which the actors
are permitted to scare guests. The
Fright Fest also features promotions
where guest can “compete” to win
prizes such as tickets for some of the
haunted sites. So drop what you are
doing and come visit Six Flags, Great
Adventure in Jackson, NJ for an epic
combination of thrills and chills. If
you missed this year… there is always next!

Fall colors are honey gold, browns, dark
greens, oranges, purples, and red. Jeans
are the main part of many girls’ wardrobes. You can wear light wash, dark
wash, or colored jeans. Printed jeans are
a great way to express your style. The
same goes for leggings. When the
weather gets cooler, scarves are a nice
way to stay warm and stylish. Sweaters
are another way to express your individual style, because they come in many
colors and patterns. Finally plaid shirts
are com-
fortable and cute. They can be paired
with jeans or leggings.
Converting Your Summer Clothes
Dresses—Layer a dress under a sweater.
You can also pair them with leggings,
boots and a cute jacket.
Floral clothing—Floral patterns can be
paired with fall colored accessories or
outer layers
Tank Tops—tank tops can be worn with
a sweater, jacket or blazer.

North Cross Country
Season
Gianna Todaro
The North Cross Country
team has been having a great
season! The runners started
training in the summer and
now it will be coming to an end
November 29th. They placed
3rd in the Monmouth County
Championships. They also won
their division by winning all of
their duals meets. A dual meet
is when two schools race each
other. The team has high
hopes for the Shore Conference, North 2 Group 3 Sectionals and Groups 3 Champi-
onships. The team also hopes to
make it to the Meet of Champions
again.
The team is coached by Mr. Richard Piro, a math teacher at North.
He is the husband of Mrs. Linda
Piro a math teacher at Thorne. In
addition to Mr. Piro the team is
coached by Brock Silvestri, a science teacher at North. Once the
season is over the team will take a
short break and then start practicing for indoor track.
75th Anniversary of Batman

He is the hero that Gotham deserves, not
just the hero that Gotham needs. His
name is Batman and this year he is turning
75. It all started way back in 1939 when
creator Bob Kane decided to put a
masked vigilante, dressed like a bat into
Detective comics 27. Bruce Wayne was a
young boy who was leaving a movie theater with his parents, when they were held
up and his parents were killed. From that
point on, he wanted to get revenge for his
parents death in a non-killing manor.
Bruce Wayne became Batman. Batman
started out with bright colors and pointed
ears. That is a lot different from today’s
Dark Knight.
In Batman’s first comic appearance he was
solving a murder case and not beating up
a clown with chaos on his mind (Joker)
His archenemy is the clown prince of
crime, the Joker. The Joker is a clown
who robs banks and causes madness in
the city of Gotham. His sidekick Robin,

was introduced in 1940. he was in Detective Comics 38. Batman in episode
#1, was introduced as a bat because he
was scared by flying bats. He thought
the bat would strike fear into his enemies like it did to him. With Batman’s
75th anniversary, DC comics released a
book with Batman’s greatest stories.
This book includes issues such as Detective Comics #27, Batman #1, Detective
Comics #83, Batman #49, World’s finest
Comics #94, and Batman #497. DC
comics also made alternative covers for
Batman 75.
Batman has appeared in many different
movies and TV shows. Such as the 1966
Batman TV series, the Dark Knight Trilogy, Batman 1989, countless cartoons,
and unfortunately 1992 Batman and Robin, which countless comic fans put in
their top 10 worst superhero movies
lists.
