Sterling Silver Ring featu r i n g a m i n i a t u r e r e p l i c a t i o n o f
a 1953 work in marble o f U k r a i n i a n s c u l p t o r M y k o l a
Muchin (1915-1962) -- M a s h a ’s f a t h e r. B o r n i n K i e v
and educated in fine ar t a t t h e u n i v e r s i t i e s o f K i e v a n d
Odessa, Mr. Muchin was o n t h e f a c u l t y o f t h e K h a r k o v
Ar t Institute while he wa s a s t u d e n t . I n 1 9 3 9 h e
married painter Sophia K o b r i n s k a y a ( M a s h a ’s m o t h e r ).
B eing po litically at odds w i t h t h e S o v i e t U n i o n ’s
position on the ar ts, the y e s c a p e d t o t h e w e s t i n 1 9 4 2 .
B y 1944, Mr. Muchin ha d d e s i g n e d a n d s u p e r v i s e d t he
c onstruct ion of three mo n u m e n t s t o t h e f a l l e n a l l i e s ,
which were erected in g e r m a n y i n 1 9 4 9 . E m i g r a t i n g
t o the U.S., he received s e v e r a l c o m m i s s i o n s e x e c u t e d
i n a variety of materials a n d t e c h n i q u e s , i n c l u d i n g
marble, wood car ving, b r o n z e c a s t i n g , a n d t h e
s mithing of silver, coppe r a n d g o l d . M a s h a p o s e d f o r
t his work at age 13. The s m a l l m a r b l e ‘ h a d i v c h k a ’
of 1953 introduced his g r e a t m a r b l e p e r i o d . S i n c e
Masha represented her p a r e n t s ’ n e w A m e r i c a n d e s t i n y,
t his work was signed in e n g l i s h . M y k o l a M u c h i n
c onsidered it a complete l y s u c c e s s f u l r e s o l u t i o n o f
s culptural principles--uni t y o f m a s s e s , w h o l e n e s s o f
c omposition, flow of mo v e m e n t i n s t a b l e f o r m s w i t h o u t
any redundancy, all elem e n t s u s e d t o c a p a c i t y. I t h a s
been rep roduced in two o t h e r v a r i a n t s , o n e
i n nearly life-size marble , t h e o t h e r ( t h r e e i n c h e s l o n g )
i n porcel ain. The sterling s i l v e r r i n g w a s p r o d u c e d
posthumously under the d i r e c t i o n o f M y k o l a M u c h i n ’s
daughter, Maria (Masha A r c h e r ) . We i g h t : 1 / 2 o u n c e
