December 2015 EWI Connect - Executive Women International
CHARTERED 1957 December 2015 HOUSTON EDITION President ’s Message We are All Truly Blessed in EWI I hope everyone had a wonderful Thanksgiving with your family and friends. Mine was filled with family and it was such a joy to have my two kids home for five days. I have my radio tuned to one of those stations that has all Christmas music, all the time. It started before Thanksgiving and I love it. The holiday season is truly magical, and we are filled with the spirit of giving, love, and Linda Petticrew laughter. It’s now that we set aside precious time to gather with friends and family, and we pause to give thanks for our many blessings. The Houston chapter is truly blessed with 81 strong member firms and 126 talented representatives which includes our awesome sustaining members who are one of the keys to the success and strength of our chapter. However, we are not just a networking organization nor are we simply here to serve our fellow man. The Houston chapter is a group of caring, compassionate individuals who support and sustain one another both personally and professionally. We laugh together, and we cry together. We are your sisters and brothers; we are your friends. If you have not plugged into this element of the network, reach out. Here you will find a support system like none other. This week some of you have received an e-mail from Shari Schiffman, 2015-2016 Membership Director that your membership renewal is available on the EWI Corporate website. I hope part of your plans for the New Year include renewing your membership and giving EWI your best in the coming year. As you all know, Houston has the largest and strongest chapter in the entire EWI organization. We will be 60 years strong in January 2017; I hope you realize how important you and your firms are to our continued success. As we celebrate the spirit of the season, I hope you all experience the true spirit of Christmas and that you realize the joy and happiness that can be yours. Merry Christmas, Happy New Year and God bless everyone! 2015-2016 Officers & Directors President Linda Petticrew Shell Energy Resources Company Vice President/ President Elect Donna Gurney JLT Specialty Insurance Services Inc. Create an effective e-mail by immediately establishing the proper tone by crafting a subject line that is persuasive enough to convince the recipient that opening the e-mail is worth their time (by default, therefore, that the message is worth reading). Do not exceed 50 characters and make sure your subject line is an accurate representation of the content of your e-mail. Begin your e-mail with a salutation then limit the content of the e-mail body to just the facts. Try not to exceed five paragraphs. Make each paragraph concise and each paragraph should deal with a separate idea. Use bullet points if you have multiple questions, suggestions or explanations. Don’t leave open-ended conclusions and provide specifics as to the next steps required, i.e. “A few points from the 3rd quarter require clarification; may we discuss them this afternoon at our budget planning meeting?” vs “Let me know what you think.” Use a signature with your name and contact information at the end of your e-mail. Before you send your e-mail, ask yourself if these questions are answered by your e-mail. What does the recipient need to know? What steps does the recipient need to follow? Is a response requested? Is there a deadline? Use emoticons ( , etc.) sparingly; don’t obscure your message by making it “cartoony.” Don’t be careless; e-mail is a legal and professional communication which can be used in a court of law and should be regarded as a formal piece of writing. Don’t use e-mail as a substitute for face-to-face or phone communications. Some recipients respond better to a personal approach and some subjects are more easily resolved in that manner. Resist the temptation to hide behind your computer, insteadpick up the phone or walk down the hall. An EWI webinar presentation by Joan M. If you were at the Houston chapter meeting that took place at the Crowne Plaza Houston River Oaks then you do! Linda Petticrew kicked off the meeting and shared this fact as part of the "Did You Know" segment she'll carry out at each meeting through the course of her term. Donna Jones delivered a beautiful invocation before Colette Carlson shared some facts of her own. She had the room laughing throughout the evening with some truths that hit close to home with her presentation Stress Less: You Management vs. Time Management. She encouraged us to recognize that change is going to happen but change as it relates to our level of stress has to deal with us. Did you know: Stress has been linked to memory loss? We're losing sleep due to stress? 78% of doctor visits are stress related? Colette has some go-to’s for alleviating stress: 1. Manage expectations; in other words be realistic. Aim to have work life integration not work life balance. We have a warped sense of how much we can get done in a day. 2. Take control or let it go. 3. I missed this one but I'm going to take Colette's advice and refer to #2! 4. Seek connection not perfection. 5. Stop multi tasking and start multi-asking. Here are a few other things to consider: When you hit snooze you're choosing procrastination as a way to start your day. Start with a ritual...something small. Colette's ritual is to give appreciation and start her day with an intention. How you talk to yourself matters. It takes three positives for every negative to stay sane. Late people always do "one more thing." Get uncomfortable with unfinished lists. That's how we move forward. Do less, or do it less perfectly, if you want more time. Make a not-to-do list. You're never going to be able to pursue your hopes and dreams if you're busy reloading the dishwasher because someone loaded it the wrong way (again, refer to #2 above). Go for the gray - it's the small things that make a big difference and keep us from "shoulding” on ourselves. It was a fun night full of great info to welcome our five new member firms!
